CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The cancellation of the Swap Meet left the programme for October rather empty this year. A number of enthusiasts from around the country who had made travel arrangements to attend Swap Meet did arrive. The Parts Shed was open and did a reasonable amount of business over the weekend.

ROSS BUTLER Chairman ph 03 352 3160

The P-Group Rally went ahead in October after being put on hold earlier in the year as the result of the Covid 19 lockdown. In excess of 50 entries were received and took part in two well planned and laid out routes of 100 kilometres and 160 kilometres. Our thanks go to Neale Cook for organising this. Reports on the Motorcycle Section’s Girder Fork Rally and the Grasskhana Day appear elsewhere in this edition of the Hub. We are hopeful that problems in receiving and opening the Hub experienced by some members have been overcome and that this edition will prove to be more satisfactory. Our sincere apologies to those who have had difficulties in this area and our thanks for their patience. November is looking to be a busy month with entry forms in the October Hub for the Malvern Run, Annual Vintage and Veteran Rallies, Show Weekend Run and the Homestead Run.

SECRETARY’S REPORT The committee finally have come to a decision after months of debate on the changes that need to be put in place regarding the future of the branch newsletter. As most of you are aware the cancellation of swap meet this year ROD THROWER has resulted in the loss of approx 30% Secretary & of the branch income for the coming Branch Delegate year. Although we have made some ph 03 338 2320 savings by changing the hub delivery to electronic for everyone we had email addresses for this, in itself, is not sufficient to proceed into the future. Listening to a fair number of members telling us they want a printed copy, and are prepared to pay for it to be printed and posted, we felt to be fair with the whole membership we would take this path into the future. (see separate Notice in this issue of the Hub) Until such time as we have a volunteer who is confident and willing to take on the task of Hub editor and website coordinator the branch will meet the cost of this aspect. The committee feel these two jobs must go hand in hand. On this note of volunteers do not forget we need someone with accounting skills to think about the upcoming roll replacement of our present Treasurer Kevin. Also dare I mention the role of Club Captain. Payment into National account unaccounted for Julie has advised me that there is one internet banking payment that has not been able to be reconciled to a canterbury branch membership - please get in touch with me if your bank account is - “RJ’S EARLY FO.”

THE HUB

KEVIN SARJEANT Branch Treasurer Members will realise that the cancellation of the 2020 Swap meet put a severe strain on The Club’s finances. There are very limited costs we can reduce so the Committee has decided to continue with the current electronic version of The HUB and to recover part of printing and postage costs from those members who require a printed copy. So to receive a printed HUB from February 2021 onwards members need to pay $41.60 in to the Branch’s bank account by 21 January 2021 noting your name membership number and HUB. This fee will cover the 11 editions to December 2021 and shares the costs more equitably amongst members. For those who pay for a printed HUB your copy will be available to picked up at Noggin should you wish and this will save the Club the postage. COLIN HEY Swap Meet Convenor Ph 03 359 8738 E heywolseley699@gmail.com

Just a quick couple of notes to finalise the 2020 Swap Meet that wasn’t. Firstly, an email has been sent to all site-holders asking for confirmation that they would like their site booking rolled over to 2021. A huge majority of those who have replied so far have indeed asked for this to be done, however there are still many we haven’t heard from. If you happen to be one of them, could you please either reply to the email, or if you cannot find it, please contact Neil Shaskey and let him know. You can contact him by email at swapmeetsites@ gmail.com, or if that won’t work for you, call him on 027 289 6201. The same applies if you didn’t have a site booked for 2020 but want one for 2021. Major Fundraising Project Secondly, because we’ve missed our annual fundraising opportunity, the committee is proposing to run an alternative fundraising event, a scrap metal drive, in conjunction with the Boot Fair which will be held on Saturday 13th February. More details will follow in next month’s Hub, but in the meantime start putting aside any scrap metal you have lying around in your shed or around home, especially non-ferrous items, old batteries etc so you can bring it out to the Boot fair. We will get it all sorted and sent off to a dealer. All proceeds will go towards the upgrade to the kitchen in the clubrooms.

NATIONAL VETERAN RALLY 16-18 OCTOBER 2020

COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor

Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt – 1904 L’Etoile

J enny and I were lucky enough to be able to put in a late entry and attend the National Veteran Rally in Gore. A great turnout of 50 cars and four motorcycles, including eight from our branch. One car, (a Model T) was driven all the way from Wellington by Bay of Plenty members Jim and Kaaren Smylie - no mean feat nowadays. The rally began with a very social registration and welcome evening on Friday at the Gore Branch clubrooms. Proceedings got underway properly the next morning with all of the vehicles being lined up in order of year just out of the centre of Gore, before being driven into Irk Street in the town centre for public display until 10.30am. A good crowd of locals turned out to see them all and to watch them being flagged away on the first run of the day by the District Mayor, Mr Tracy Hicks.

Cars arriving on the lawn at Marairua Homestead 8

The first run of about 30km took us south to just north of Mataura (mostly by back-roads), where we travelled a short distance along SH1 before crossing to the other side of the Mataura River and heading further south towards Wyndham. Our first stop of the day was at the Marairua Homestead. Recently fully restored, this fabulous and substantial brick and stone home was built in the 1880s by Scottish immigrant Allan Galt and his family. With a large lake and sweeping lawns in front of it, it provided the perfect backdrop for the veteran vehicles and a great spot to enjoy lunch, catch up with other entrants, and of course take lots of photographs. Unfortunately the lawn, saturated by heavy rain the night before, didn’t stand up to heavy cars and narrow tyres very well, but owners Lex and Christina Glover were confident it could all be easily repaired – Lex even driving his large modern Cadillac SUV onto the lawn to pose with the veteran Cadillacs on the rally. After lunch instructions directed us to a tulip farm near Edendale where all the vehicles were individually photographed in front of a backdrop of several acres of red tulips. We headed north to visit the sheds of a local VCC member (unfortunately I cannot remember his name) – a gentleman who has the gift of creating all sorts of interesting vehicles (mainly motorcycles) out of interesting ‘stuff’. Picture if you can a motorcycle powered by a Lister stationary engine, and another powered by 3 Villiers 2-stroke lawnmower engines in-line! We returned to Gore to enjoy refreshments and a great BBQ dinner at the branch clubrooms, finishing around 6.30pm. Just enough time for us to return to our accommodation to be collected by a bus at 7.30pm for a trip to the local cinema, for a a special viewing of the movie Genevive. We all cringed at the blatant male-chauvinism of the time, and the rough treatment being dealt to the Darracq and Spyker during the filming of this iconic 1950s movie.

Outside the stables at Marairua Homestead 9

Sunday morning kicked off at the local showgrounds at 10am with field tests and another public display. Some interesting tests and a lot of fun, made slightly difficult once again by the soft ground. Another great opportunity for us all to talk veteran motoring and inspect the interesting machines others had brought to the rally. The afternoon was free to enjoy local attractions, with many visiting the local gardens and the Mandeville airfield. Ian and Rosemary Close (1903 Oldsmobile) getting ready to depart for the Saturday morning display in central Gore.

Sunday night was the final dinner at the Croydon lodge – another great social occasion and beautiful meal. Our branch members fared very well in the awards, and congratulations to the following Canterbury members: Ian and Rosemary Close – 1903 Oldsmobile Achievers Award (a brand-new restoration and first rally ever – full distance completed with no issues), and winner of People’s Choice trophy. A beautiful car and running like a watch…… Bruce and Shirly Shadbolt – 1904 L’Etoile Concours. Another stunning restoration from Bruce and Shirley, only recently completed. Shirley also won the Best Dressed Entrant award for her stunning period costumes. Graeme Sword – 1914 Triumph Junior Runner-up for best performance for fixed-drive motorcycle. Graeme completed the whole rally on this well-loved and reliable machine. Fortunately the weather played its part for the event – no rain at all during our motoring, meaning most hoods were down on most cars. Although it was a bit cool, everyone was well prepared, we even saw the sunshine a few times. Our own 1912 Wolseley performed faultlessly, and only needs a quick clean before the next events on the 7th and 8th of November (Dutton Garage run to the Hororata Highland Games, followed by the Annual Veteran Rally the next day). Jenny and I both thoroughly enjoyed the event – nice cars, fabulous, friendly people, and interesting motoring too. I certainly headed for home thinking the veteran movement is still in great shape with a very promising future! 10

ANNUAL BRANCH VETERAN RALLY

COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor Ph 359-8737 021 883 807

I have to say I am concerned by the low number of entries for this event, and consequently I haven’t yet shut the door to late entries. I would certainly encourage all of you who have veteran vehicles to get them dusted off, put some fresh petrol in the tank, and get them out to Darfield for the run on Sunday 8th November. The start time is 10am, and we’re heading to Oxford for lunch – you have the choice of a direct route of 30km or a much more interesting route of 35km travelling via View Hill and Coopers Creek. The latter has a couple of extra slight inclines which all veterans should manage OK, and is on an all-sealed route. There is also an alternative route for those north of the Waimak which will start in Cust outside the Route 72 Café at 10am. For those who intend going on the Dutton Garage run to the Hororata Highland Games on 7th November (the day before the Veteran Rally), we can offer safe storage of cars/trailers in Darfield overnight, so you don’t need to drive all the way home again that night. Please contact myself or Malcolm McGibbon if you need this arranged. Entry forms for the Veteran Rally were in last month’s hub, and are available via the branch website but if you are entering late, please give me a call as well as sending the entry form in, so we can be prepared on the day. 11

P GROUP REPORT The annual P group rally was attended by over 50 cars and judging by the smiles at the end it was enjoyed by all. After departing Cutler Park the entrants drove in a large loop through the back of Rangiora to the Waimakariri Gorge NEALE COOK via Ashley Gorge and View Hill. P Group Roughly a third of the cars continued Convenor for an interesting but dusty drive ph 021 295 3628 through the Malvern Hills via White Cliffs to the finish at the Sheffield Domain. Unfortunately, the wind picked up and made picnicking challenging. 2020 Rally Winners Les Humm Memorial Trophy (Concours at the annual P group rally)

VINTAGE REPORT

MIKE MILNE Vintage Convenor Ph 02 235 7246

Entries for this year’s Vintage Annual Rally have been coming in well, with a good number of vehicles. We should have a great morning’s motoring followed by a BBQ Lunch with the Veteran section. A big thanks to Colin Hey and his team for allowing us to ‘crash’ the lunch spot. I look forward to seeing you all on the day. Safe Motoring.

EVENT

UPDATE

MALCOLM MCGIBBON Event Organiser ph 0274 338 047

The list of cars is amazing, some of which have just returned from the National Veteran Rally with top awards. They will provide a wonderful spectacle at the games.

Start is at the Darfield Recreation Centre at 9:30am so please be there in plenty of time to collect your rally pack and to fit your rally number to your vehicle before heading off on a short run to Hororata. For those with very early veterans you may wish to trailer them to the assembly point at the Hororata Cenotaph where there is plenty of parking. Please still come to the Darfield Recreation Centre for your rally pack. At the Hororata Cenotaph the vehicles are to be lined up in numerical order for the entry to the games venue. It is approx 1km from the Cenotaph to the games and there will be marshals to direct us to the Games Arena and then to our allocated parking and display area. Our entry into the Games is at 10:30. Please ensure that everyone in your vehicle is wearing the wristband that you have been issued with. Remember we have committed to remaining as a display until 4:00pm and it is a condition of our entry. Veteran owners remember that the 2020 Veteran rally on the 8th starts at the Darfield Recreation Centre and goes to the Old Rustic Hotel at Oxford for a BBQ lunch. Those north of the Waimak will have an alternative start point on their side of the divide. See you all there. The organisers need to know if you are planning to attend the‌

16-21 JANUARY 2022

Planning for our next international rally in Taranaki is well underway again following the covid postponement but organisers do need a firm commitment from all members intending to make the journey north. Email festivalsecretary@gmail.com to register your interest.

Grasskhana 2020 Report Ross Butler A fine day favoured this event again this year and a pleasing number of entrants turned out and registered. Vehicles ranged from Austin 7 to very early Ford V8 and included three Model A’s and three motorcycles. Two Morris Minors, Mazda MX5, Lotus 7, VW Golf, Triumph Stag, Land Rover and Riley Special Sports all making for a diverse range of competitors. There were four tests set out, all of which were attacked with varying amounts of skill and lots of enthusiasm. Joseph McClintock was not only the overall winner but he also had best times in all four tests on his 1976 Suzuki 125. Eric Cox in his Morris Minor 1000 came in second with Fraser Kear in the ’87 GTI Golf third and two seconds behind him in fourth place in his ’89 Mazda MX5 was Taylor White, (a number of seconds faster than his Dad in the same car). Two of the Ford A’s performed very creditably and we won’t mention Rod Thrower’s Model A. Quentin Wearing’s very nice BSA Gold Star proved to be a real handful for him but fortunately neither Quentin nor the bike suffered any serious damage. Chris Stevens’ 1980 Yamaha tended to be a little temperamental, putting his mechanical skills to the test but went well when it decided to behave appropriately. My thanks to Graeme Arps and Mike Foster who helped in setting out the course and on the day looked after the time-keeping. Thanks also to the participants for putting on what was a most entertaining display making the event a fun occasion for all involved.

PARTS SHED

WAYNE STOCKS Parts Shed

Well October was a little different this year. We got so many requests from out of town visitors we decided to open the parts shed on the second weekend which of course was the swap meet weekend usually. We had a successful weekend but low key and plenty of time to remake old acquaintances. Our new trailer has now made two recoveries the latest being a Morris Minor Ute (see photo) with two more recoveries being planned at the moment. We have had several donations of car parts including two Cortina engines and some motorcycle wheels, A big thank you to all contributors. My advice to club members is to keep an eye on what comes in to your parts shed. We have a white board that Ron Percy put up just inside the front door that we write on all new arrivals so keep an eye on it.

ROYCE VOG 1

October 2020 run It was excitement aplenty as the 13th of October rolled around at last and the VOG’s were out on the highways from the start point of Brian Newberry’s warehouse in Woolston. Dave Backhouse organised the run for us this month and what a beauty it was. Unfortunately VOG1 was still out of action and unable to mount his stead this time but it didn’t matter, I provided the backup and joined in the fun from the rear of the field. Dave had organised a visit for us to the Ferrymead Aeronautical sheds – wow is how I would describe these. What a great collection of old aircraft there are stored in these sheds, memories of yesteryear and all enthusiastically explained to us by Dennis from Ferrymead who was our host. What a passion the man has in preserving part of New Zealand’s airline history. An NAC Viscount “City of Christchurch” was one example on display complete in the livery of the day, a Fokker Friendship, a Bristol Freighter to name but a few. One huge restoration at the moment is a Mosquito NB492 that had been in active duty in World War II. They even have the Rolls-Royce Merlin engines ready to be mounted once the project has been completed. Wooden fuselage, wooden wings, can you imagine flying at 425mph in that! Thanks Dave for another brilliant day out.

EXCELLENT DAY OUT! VCC CANTERBURY

9-90s

WINTER DOESN’T STOP US THE MORE THE MERRIER!

The Hills must have been to church JOHN KUIPERS to get a day like we had on October 7. 9-90’s Coordinator We had absolutely fabulous sunshine and no cold winds. They took us for a nice ride through the countryside around Rangiora and Broomfield on our way to see Andy Fox at Foxdown. Andy has got a nice collection of cars and a lovely museum with a lot of items that have been in his family for generations. A very pleasant day was spent at Foxdown. Thank you very much Andy. Fifty-four cars and we had a good raffle. A big thank you to the Hills for a great day out. They donated the entry fees to a local project in the Waikari district. Upcoming Events Christmas lunch December 9 at Pineacres. 76 people had paid before 12 noon. A popular choice of venue. We only have room for 80. At one stage I panicked. I thought I had sold too many seats! November 11 The Tulletts are taking us to Mid Canterbury so hope for good weather. That is going to be a great day out. You will need a full tank. Meet at Rolleston Community Centre leaving at 9.55am sharp. A big thank you to those who took up my suggestion to use the back seat. I would like a few more like minded persons. It costs you nothing and you give someone a day out. Someone took their mother for the day. Now that’s an idea! Look forward to seeing you all next month. J K and the Team 20

Sunday 15th November (third Sunday in the month) will be the final OCBC for the year – your final chance to get to one in 2020. There will be a break for December and January, then the first for 2021 will be held on 21 February. Thanks to everyone who has supported them this year – they have been just the ticket for those wanting to have a short Sunday outing, with the option of going onto something else that day, or just returning home after a good coffee. As always, any ‘interesting’ vehicle is most welcome – it doesn’t have to be a club eligible vehicle or even driven by a club member – we just want to provide an opportunity for you to get it out and show it off or just use and enjoy it.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section

This last month has seen some of the best motorcycling weather for a long time, hope you got out on your bike to enjoy it! PAST EVENTS

14th October – Noggin. At Motorcycle Corner, about a dozen turned up. 17th – 18th October – Girder Fork Rally to Akaroa. A very successful event, brilliant sunny weather for both days. See elsewhere for a full write-up. 24th October – Fish & Chip Run. This event was run on the Saturday of Labour Weekend, and not unexpectedly, a small turn-out. Four bikes toddled off to Little River via the Lyttleton Tunnel for a well-deserved lunch at the Diner’s Café, Little River. At the lunch break a lot of technical stuff got discussed and a lot of bull-shit as well… That’s what makes these runs so special… 25th October – Grasskana at Cutler Park. Again, the Sunday of Labour Weekend, but that did not stop about a dozen cars and three motorcycles from turning up. Chris Stevens riding his Yamaha TT250, Harry Wearing riding a BSA; and the overall winner of the event Joseph McClintock riding his Suzuki RM125. Congratulations, Joseph, and thanks to the other riders who showed the car people how to compete… FUTURE EVENTS

2nd November – Annual Motorcycle Rally. POSTPONED. To spread the load of all of the motorcycle major events all coming at once the decision has been made to move the Annual Motorcycle Rally until 20th February 2021. This date is that for the VCC Commercial Rally, so we hope to tie in with the start, and lunch break. More details later. 11th November – Noggin. A garage raid in the Sydenham area has been organised, so meet at the Speights Ale House, Tower Junction 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm departure to the destination. 22nd November – Homestead Run. Organised by motorcycle committee man Jens Christensen; bike friendly event. Starts Prebbleton Domain, 80 Tosswill Road, Prebbleton. Entries 22

are on line, need to enter and pay your monies. Assemble 9.30 am to collect rally sheet and ready for a 10.00 am start. 28th November – Fish & Chip run. Meet at BP Petrol Station, Moorhouse Ave/Antigua Street corner, 10.15 for a 10.30 am departure. We do have a destination in mind, a garage raid on a property in the Sefton – Balcairn area. This promises to be a good one, so turn up to find out how good! 9th December – Noggin, Christmas Special. Looking at another very popular Christmas Event. There will be a charge of $20 per person for a meal that is very similar to that provided last year. Dietary needs MUST be advised in advance! Please indicate, for catering purposes, your intention to attend to Philip Jeeves, Ph: 338 0666 or 022 025 9924 or philipjeeves21@gmail.com. We do need numbers for catering, so please advise ASAP. Thank you. People turn up for this at about 6.00 pm for a few beers first then the meal is served about 7.00 pm. There is no Fish & Chip Run in December, the next motorcycle event will be in January, the New Year Run which will be on 2nd January 2021. This is a Saturday; normally we meet at Cutler Park about 10.15 am and are briefed then for a destination. More details in the last Hub of the year, the December edition. That is about it for November; get out on the bike, even if it is only a “getting match fit” exercise for the National Motorcycle Rally coming up in March 2021! Yes, more on this later!

Girder Fork Rally

Report by BEVARS BINNIE

Photo above: From left, Saturday 17 October and 22 entries Joseph McClintock, riding gathered at the start of the 2020 a 1917 Henderson - Veteren Girder Fork Rally. The day’s weather Trophy, Alistair Kermode, riding a 1922 Ace - Time forecast hadn’t been good, but it Trial trophy, Stuart Skur, turned out fine, warm and calm. It riding a 1928 Harley Davidson - Vintage Trophy, appeared that there were in fact and David Richardson, more than 22 eligible bikes lined up, riding a 1928 James Publican’s Choice and but some riders just came for a look, Overall Winner trophies. while a few others rode along with the rally until later in the afternoon and then returned home. The organisers would like these people to also enter in future if they are following the run. The entry fee is very little, and having accurate numbers makes it much easier for the lunch venue to cater for us. They have no idea how many casual riders will turn up wanting to be fed.

As has become our habit on this rally, I rode my 1918 Royal Enfield on Saturday, while Lois arrived in Akaroa late in the afternoon with her 1929 Royal Enfield on the trailer. We swapped the bikes over, and Lois rode back to Tai Tapu on Sunday. This allows both of us to ride, and to take some home comforts with us. We left the start at Super Liquor Hornby, wound our way onto Springs Road, then followed Halswell Junction Road through Halswell and round onto Cashmere Road to follow the base of the Port Hills. The short route went over Dyers Pass Road, while the long route continued round to the Lyttleton Tunnel to rejoin the short run at Governors Bay. We stopped for a break at the Living Springs Camp, where Royce and Jan Baker had a delicious morning tea ready for us in a little pavilion next to the sports arena. We resumed heading over Gebbies Pass and stopping at the Little River Pub for lunch and refreshments. 24

Back on the road again, some of the more adventurous took the Summit Road around the top of the hills before descending to our overnight stop at Akaroa, while others stayed on the main road back down the hill and followed it around the bays. There was no organised evening meal, with some supporting local restaurants, others buying fish and chips, or eating at the Grand Hotel. Some stayed at their accommodation watching the election results, while others gathered at the pub for a few drinks and a natter. Sunday morning we all gathered at the Grand Hotel for the owner Eric to award some bottles of wine as his prizes for: Publican’s Choice - Dave Richardson, 1928 James Lady Rider – Lois Binnie, 1928 Royal Enfield

Then it was back in the saddle to ride to Little River for coffee and a bun, then to Tai Tapu for the announcement of rally winners and presentation of the prizes. It was perfect riding weather, fine, warm and no wind – the latter somewhat unusual on this rally where we frequently have to battle into a stiff southerly on the Saturday, or norwester on the Sunday. RESULTS The Ian McKinlay trophy for Vintage bikes on the Girder Fork Rally Stu Skurr, 1928 Harley-Davidson Wire Whiskers Joseph McClintock, 1917 Henderson Canterbury Motorcycle Section Best Overall Dave Richardson, 1928 James Barry Stevens Regularity Trial Alastair Kermode, 1922 ACE Hard Luck (or Dick of the Run) Barry Hay, 1917 Harley-Davidson
