CHAIRMAN’S REPORT On Sunday, 25 June 2017, our 61st AGM was held at the clubrooms at Cutler Park. Thanks to the one hundred members who attended. This was the final AGM chaired by our past Chairman, Leigh Craythorne. Leigh persuaded me to take over from her, and it is my privilege to present this first report to the members as Chairman. Leigh may be petite, but she has very large shoes to fill, and I am grateful that she will be on the branch committee as Immediate Past Chairman for the next year to assist and guide the committee. A presentation was made to Leigh, Paul Seaton and Mark Drury who were standing down from the committee. A presentation was also made to Cindy Hey who is standing down as our Hub Editor. A special trophy was presented to Graeme Sword for all the assistance to our branch over many years, as the Sword family have now ceased to cater for our branch events after seventeen years of wonderful service. Rod Thrower has been elected as our Branch Secretary, delegate to Executive Meetings, and Privacy Officer. The presentation of the Secretary’s Rose Bowl Trophy is to be made at the first committee meeting in July. We welcome Brendon Eason to the committee, and thank Greg Lamb for agreeing to remain on the committee after standing down as Club Captain. I also want to thank and congratulate the returning committee members and representatives for their dedication to this branch. We are very well served. We do not have a Club Captain at present. Please think about the effect this will have on our ability to organise the events set out in our calendar of events for the next year. Without a Club Captain, some events may have to be cancelled. If you are prepared to consider this position, or can suggest someone suitable, please contact me or any branch committee member urgently. Greg Lamb will be happy to assist anyone who takes the position on. George Kear gave a brief presentation on the upgrade to our club property including all the new plantings and irrigation system installed and the new boundary fencing. A number of smaller picnic areas have been created and the swap meet sites are being reorganised to create more space and easier access. New water tanks have been installed, and the irrigation system extended and further planting towards the rear of the property is being undertaken in the next two months. We are indebted to George, Peter, Mike and all the team involved in the development and maintenance of our property, and look forward to enjoying these improvements in years to come. We have two new events on our calendar to look forward to over the next twelve months. Malcom McGibbon has proposed an Anzac Day run to coincide with Memorial Services at War Memorials around the district. He did a trial run this year, and it was well received. His proposal was aimed at getting Veteran and Vintage vehicles involved, as these played a major part in both World Wars. He suggested that all pre 1946 vehicles should be involved. I reported from the March Executive meeting that a National VCC day was being proposed for late August, and it is to be held in conjunction with the Cancer Society, two days after Daffodil Day. I am very grateful that Colin Hey has volunteered to organise this event at short notice, and it will be open to all car clubs, or members of the public who wish to attend. The $10.00 entry fee will be donated to the Cancer Society, along with any fundraising associated with this event. Every branch will be holding similar events on Sunday 27 August. This will be an annual event aimed at raising money for charity, and raising the profile of our club and encouraging membership. We have an interesting year ahead of us and I look forward to sharing it with you. Remember that our National AGM will be held in Blenheim on 11 – 13 August. I hope some of you will join us there for the weekend. John Coomber Chairman

SECRETARY’S REPORT It is with great pleasure I take on the new job as Secretary for the Canterbury Branch of the Vintage Car Club of NZ. For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Rod Thrower and I live local in Hillmorton Christchurch. I have lived at this address for the last 43 years. I have been a member of the VCC for approx. 10 years, the last year serving as your assistant Club Captain. My sole eligible vehicle is a 1928 Model A Ford. In this time, my duties have included attending the monthly committee meetings, running of the January Picnic Run, helping out on other runs as back up, running the annual Dance last month and general duties at Swap Meet last year. My time during this event spent behind the bar was one of the highlights for me as I meet so many new faces and was able to put some names to them. My biggest disappointment has been the organising the annual dance. I am sure the majority of the members that attended had a great night. The lack of ticket sales makes me wonder if this event might no longer be of interest to the 1200 plus members in our branch as we only sold 42 tickets and need to sell more like 60 to 70 to be viable. We have over the years tried to hold our ticket price at $20 per person, but now we don’t have an In House Caterer and the costs of bands and food increasing all the time we will have to review whether we continue to run these events. If you have any constructive ideas for the future of such like events please give me a call. Well on that gloomy note we will move forward to a vibrant year of activities and hope that those of you that wish to help and support your very hard working committee and all the tireless workers in the background please come forward and make yourself known.
Regards, Rod 8
Club Captain’s Report As this is my final report as Club Captain, I have concerns as to the future of some of our Calendar of Events. Times have changed and we have not changed with them. We have to move on from what we used to do.
While I was archiving history of our rallies, it was interesting to see how many people as in social groups used to run large rallies with big entries and large support. For example, 23 people were used at check points on one rally. A good following of social events was also noted. This is not happening now. This year I had to rely on my usual small team for support. Are we getting old or “been there, done that.” This is why we need to nurture younger members and value their input. When we have a larger turnout to a monthly 9/90’s than annual club events maybe we need to revaluate what our members’ needs are. I have requested feedback. I have enjoyed my journey. Happy motoring Greg.

Commercial Report It has been many years since the Commercial Section made a visit to the VCC National Archives Building in Aberdeen St, Christchurch. On the longest night of the year, we again visited this interesting venue. Don Muller, the VCC National Archivist, gave us a short talk on the aims and philosophy of the thinking behind this great display, as well as describing the location of the many items on display. He had also gone to a lot of trouble sorting out various commercial related memorabilia for us including books, magazines, trophies and videos of many old trucking films from way back. All his efforts made for a very interesting evening and very much appreciated by all that attended. Thanks Don. Thanks also to Leigh and Tony Craythorne for the lovely supper. Next month on the 19th July, we have been invited to Dave Cooper’s residence at 454 South Eyre Road, Clarkville. Mark Drury

Hi to you all
9 - 90s
This month’s trip was the postponed April Trip. The Andrews and the Sword families surely made up for the cancelled day in April. The weather was great with sunshine all the way. North Canterbury is great country for a nice interesting drive. We ended up at the Barn, right on time for lunch. There was a blazing fire and two kinds of delicious soup (pumpkin and vegetable), as well as coffee and tea waiting for us. Thank you so much to the Andrews and the Swords. There were well over 30 cars and the Barn was full. A great atmosphere, a good raffle and I think everyone had a good time. On July 12th, our Mid-Winter Christmas Lunch will be held at The Barn at 11.30 am. I would like to see everyone come and don’t be frightened by the “homemade food” food request and the Maori way of doing it. I am Dutch and I am not scared. The Edmond’s Cookbook is a great help. Graeme Sword will have the room nice and warm. Don’t worry, I won’t ask anyone to volunteer to organise a trip for next year. The list is full. We are all set up until August, 2018. Ken Hands has offered to be my offside, taking over from the late Brian McSaveney, who did such a good job. August 9th - Organiser Geoff Townsend. Meet at the Peg Carpark, Belfast Pub at 10am. September 13th - Tony Becker is organising a trip to Ashburton. Details in next month’s Hub. Looking forward to the Mid-Winter Christmas Lunch. J K and the Team PS There will be two prizes at the lunch. two bottles of wine for two cars. Pre 1950 – one for the smallest footprint and one for the largest footprint.

Swap Meet Report Preparations for Swap Meet are continuing, and stepping up a notch now that October is rapidly approaching. Hopefully, everyone will have read the report included in the AGM reports, and will now understand that everyone entering the grounds over the course of the three days of Swap Meet, will be issued with a single-use wristband.
We will have these wristbands available at the August and September Noggins, so that they can be pre-purchased to avoid waiting at the gates to pay to get in. Also at the Noggins will be the roster sheets for everyone to offer a time to volunteer for the many jobs that need doing over the course of the weekend. These vary from simply watching over the display areas to spending some time in HQ, or perhaps helping set up or clean up afterwards. Anyone offering time will receive a wristband for the day they are volunteering, which, of course will provide free entry. If you can’t make it to Noggins, please call me on 359-8737 and let me know what you would like to offer to do. As per last year, we also want to make the vehicle display impressive this year. We want everyone to make a special effort to bring your club-eligible vehicle to display during the weekend. Everyone who brings a display vehicle will also receive a wristband and free entry. Also, at the August and September Noggins, we will have the corflute signs available for people to take away and put up around town. The more help we get to distribute these on fences around town, the better. It all helps get the message out there and the public through the gates. Remember, we need the support of all of our branch members to make this event work. It is our only fundraiser for the year, and all we ask is for an hour or so of your time. The earlier you get in, the more chance you have of getting the time and job of your choice. Thanks in anticipation for your help. Colin Hey, Swap Meet Chairman. 14

Daffodil Rally for Cancer Sunday 27th August As part of a VCC National Initiative to fundraise for the NZ Cancer Society, the VCC Canterbury Branch is running a special and open event on Sunday 27th August. This will be one of dozens of similar events held around the country on the same day. All veteran, vintage and classic vehicle owners, including individuals, and members of ALL motoring clubs (including Custom and Hot-Rod Clubs) will be invited to participate in, what will be one of the largest old-vehicle runs the city has seen. As the host club, it would be great if we could lead the way and have a great turn-out of members and vehicles, so please help us out on the day, attend, and have a great day out. Assemble at the VCC grounds at McLeans Island between 10.00 and 10.30am for registration in the clubrooms. Devonshire teas (or coffee) will be available there at $5.00 per head. Registration costs $10.00 per car. After registration, you can depart on your choice of run: · Car Museum Run · Motorcycle Museum Run · Garden Run · Art Run · Touring Run (for those who just like to drive on scenic, free-running, open roads) Each run will involve no more than 1 hour of driving (Touring Run will be 1.5 hours). Entry to any venues will be at discounted rates, and will need to be paid for separately. In all cases, entry to venues is optional – you only need to stop and visit if you want to. Some will be free or entry by donation. Continued next page 17
All runs return to, and finish at, the VCC grounds by around 1.00pm. A barbeque lunch will be run by a service club, with proceeds also going to the Cancer Society. BYO lunch is another option. All vehicles will be lined up for display, to which the general public will be invited. A brief prize-giving will be held at 2.30pm, with prizes presented for the following: · Best Motorcycle · Best Veteran Car · Best Vintage Car · Best Classic Car · Most Impressive Chrome · Most Unique Vehicle – judged by a representative from the Cancer Society · Best Dressed Driver and Passengers (dress in the era or a style to suit your vehicle) Note: The event will be run wet or fine – the clubrooms will be open to provide shelter if needed. The VCC Parts Sheds will also be open for those who wish to have a look around. Event Coordinator for VCC Canterbury Branch Colin Hey Ph 359-8737 (please call evenings only, after 7.30pm) PS: If anyone is able to marshall on the day, or assist with registration, or the Devonshire Teas, please get in touch – I would be pleased to hear from you.

Celebrity Dance Twas no where near Christmas when down in the Hub We read of a dance to be held at the club. A celebrity dance and we went, as a pair, And wondered what characters soon would be there. With live band “Smooth Talk”, we weren’t long through the door , I knew in a moment we’d take to the floor. More rapid than eagles the dancers they came And we watched them all moving and called them by name... “Now there’s Dolly Parton, I say, is that ‘Pink’? Is that Charlie Chaplin-why there’s two I think!” Down from the bar to the top of the hall! Is that the chairperson in Miss Marple’s shawl? A Bollywood starlet with a gent at her arm I knew in a moment it was Imran Khan Whilst manning the bar, crocodile in his hand Steve Irwin was happy surveying the band Then superman took super girl for a spin and John Travolta (the pilot!) stepped in Abbey Lee Millar was not so well known From ‘Dance Mom’s’ she said and held proof on her phone. A glint from the Sheriff’s badge bolder than brasses Gave the lustre of mid-day to Dame Edna’s glasses. When what to my wondering eyes should appear But Ozzy Osbourne, with a full head of hair! Not long after that, there arose such a clatter We sprang from our chairs to see what was the matter Her most Royal Highness-why yes, ’twas the Queen, had knighted someone with her sceptre it seemed

Lawrence of Arabia (or of Avonhead?) Then took off the head dress he wore on his head A vicar they thought him then (Oh dear, how wrong!) He blessed a few people then put it back on The supper was eaten, the prizes were won The dancing was over and all’d had their fun But we heard them exclaim as we drove off the site “Well, we had a ball, and in all, a good night!” Elizabeth And Brendon Eason (aka Mother and Father Christmas!) **Special thanks to Daniella and friends for providing our appreciated supper, the bar staff for serving us all and especially to Rod and Lynda for all the work they have done in putting on another happy event!

GRAEME SWORD Graeme joined the Canterbury Branch of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) on 19 November 1990, becoming Club Captain in 2004, a position he held for 6 years until 2010. He was always meticulous in his planning and recording of each of the runs he organized, leaving clear, concise records for future organizers. With the support of Julie and his extended family, Graeme has been our Branch resident caterer for just over 17 years, catering for national meetings and conferences hosted by the Branch, dance suppers, balls, rally dinners, award dinners, afternoon and morning teas and numerous other suppers, as well as other Branch events. Many of our rallies have started with a welcome cuppa and freshly baked scones made by team Sword. We have recently, regretfully, accepted Graeme's resignation from this huge commitment. He and his family team always knew what our members enjoyed to eat and there was always plenty over for seconds and even thirds! Often including three courses, the cooking and presentation was consistently carried out to a very high standard and in a professional but friendly manner, receiving appreciative comments from the members. He and his family were always open to special menu requests and nothing was a trouble to them. They are all thanked sincerely for the many years they have given to the Branch in this very important role. Next year Graeme (along with his wonderful extended family) will celebrate 10 years of organizing the Branch Annual Autumn Run. Deciding the destination, planning the route, organizing accommodation, dealing with entry forms, not to mention catering for the whole 3 – 4 days, all are taken in their stride by the Sword family, under the competent leadership of Graeme. Not only does Graeme plan the menu, he sources all the ingredients from where he can get the best price and value. No going into one supermarket a couple of days beforehand for Graeme! The wholesome meals over the weekend are prepared without fuss and the home made scones and biscuits are relished by all.
Entrants to his runs are always assured of a well organized weekend 31
which includes various quizzes and bingo game type entertainment during the evening, as well as interesting places to visit during the run. 54 entrants (plus their families and friends) took part in this year's run and I know that they will be looking forward with anticipation to next year's special one. Graeme is also a valued member of the Spare Parts Department team. Graeme will be the first to acknowledge the assistance and support of Julie and his family. They are also thanked and appreciated by the Branch. For his ongoing and long standing loyal commitment to the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) Canterbury Branch I have much pleasure in presenting Graeme with the Special Events trophy. Leigh Craythorne (Mrs) Chairman Canterbury Branch Vintage Car Club of NZ (Inc.)

Special Events Trophy 2017 As the winner of this prestigious trophy, I would like to say that, as I only found out at the AGM presentations, I couldn’t think of anything to say or who to thank as I was so shocked at receiving this very important award. Firstly, I would like to thank my family and extended family, as without the help I have received over the years from them, I would not be celebrating this and a lot of the credit must go to them. They helped with the morning and afternoon teas, and marshalling in the earlier day of my membership. When I was Club Captain, they were coerced into doing all types of jobs including doing some club catering. Later we took over doing all the club catering needs which on its own was quite a big job. Unfortunately, we have now given this up and I think we will all miss it as it was a very good family get-together (Team Bonding). Thanks also, to the Chairman Leigh Craythorne, and her Committee, for my nomination for this Trophy, which going by the past nineteen recipients recorded since it was presented in 1998, puts the winner into a very elite class. Personally, I would not enjoy the challenge of selecting a winner from our nearly 1300 members. A lot of our members committing themselves to our club over many years, doing hours and hours of work to keep our club running smoothly for our current and future members. Our club members also gave me a lot of support during my time on the committee, as Club Captain, Assistant Club Captain, Veteran Convener, Rally organiser and at all the catering venues, with many thanking us on the day for the food and ways we presented the meals (sometimes at the request of the rally organisers). The rallies and runs I organised were very pleasing, with positive feedback from our members. The letters of thanks from quite a lot of people who took the time to put this in writing was very humbling and it made everything well worthwhile to know the members were enjoying what the club was doing for them.

I would like to think I will have many more years within our very friendly club and will be helping out as much as possible. I’m looking forward to running next year’s Autumn Run back to Timaru for the re-enactment of me organising our first two day Autumn run in 2008 where, hopefully, I can encourage as many as possible of the original entrants to attend. As for the future, I intend to carry on with the Parts Shed Committee and helping out the members and the committee members whenever it is needed. Many Thanks, Graeme Sword
CONDOLENCES Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Emiel den Haring
