CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Another busy month ahead with the annual Motorcycle Rally, Vintage Rally, Show Weekend Tour and the Homestead Run to look forward to. This year the success of our Swap Meet Weekend was spoiled by the very wet Saturday and Sunday. Fortunately, the fine weather on Friday brought a large crowd to our gates and made up for the wet weekend. I was very impressed with how well the new systems worked and how good the grounds looked. There were a lot of very favourable comments being made. Colin Hey and his team did an excellent job and have come up with some improvements for next year. I want to thank the many members who volunteered early to fill the many jobs to be done throughout the weekend. The enthusiasm and support of so many has made planning this event easier and you have all contributed to the success of the event this year, despite adverse conditions. While many have enjoyed a break over Labour weekend, a group of our motorcycle section camped at the Island over the weekend and undertook general maintenance and jobs around the club grounds, including repainting the floors of the toilet and shower blocks at the main complex. I want to thank those members for the work they have done for us all. Colin Hey and I had the privilege of attending the Cancer Society recently to present a cheque for $4,500.00 raised at our National Daffodil Rally by this branch. They were delighted to receive this money, and we advised them that we will be holding this event again next year and hope to do even better next time. The branches participating in this year’s event have nationally raised a total of $40,000 for the Cancer Society. John Coomber Chairman

SECRETARY’S REPORT An extremely busy month what with Swap Meet etc. but compared to some on the Swap Meet Committee mine was a walk in the park. Well, a walk in the rain really! Things seem to be going along quite smoothly now with a fairly constant flow of new members and emails. Emails are obviously not all recorded but are kept on the computer, for future reference, as the need may arise. I get quite a lot of advertisements for events which are noted and forwarded to the Hub Editor, if I think they warrant a mention and don’t clash with our Branch events, some make it to the notice board or the R file. There is a lot happening in our Branch during November so here’s hoping for the sun to shine. Cheers Rod

Club Captain’s Report Important Information The Show Weekend Tour will start at Cutler Park, Friday 17th November – assemble by 9:00am for a 9.30am start. The Homestead Run will start at 126 South Eyre Road, Clarkville (VCC sign at gate) Sunday, 26th November– assemble by 9:00am for a 9.30am start. The Swap Meet had mixed results owing to the inclement weather. Friday was a fine day and according to all reports most of the stall holders etc. seemed to have reasonable success. The Handbooks also sold well. Saturday and Sunday morning - because of the weather - turned out to be a real bonus for the Parts Shed - having a record turnover for any Swap Meet. The feedback on the wristband passes was mostly positive. To those of you who get impatient at the gates either coming or going remember the people on the gates are volunteers as are all the members who help with the Swap Meet in trying to make this event run smoothly for everyone’s enjoyment. As our main fundraiser without the Parts Shed or the Swap Meet our Club would not be able to service the facilities we all enjoy. On a brighter note, the Rosters System at Noggin nights worked well. Thanks to all the volunteers who signed up and offered help before, during and after the weekend. The irrigation line to the new trees at the back should be installed on the 25th October and by the time the HUB is produced hopefully is all backfilled and tidy. November is a very busy month motoring wise so lets get out on the rallies and enjoy ourselves. Be courteous and let other road users pass. Cheers Dave Inwood 8

Commercial Report The October Commercial Noggin was hosted by the Vintage Farm Machinery Club providing the opportunity to visit the extensive collection of all things agricultural, both in their new storage shed and hiding under various trees around the grounds. We were given an interesting insight into the process involved in construction of the new shed, along with plans for it’s intended future use, and a very nice supper was put on by the club members. Many thanks to Lyndsay Saunders for making the arrangements for the visit. Novembers’ Commercial Noggin will be held at The Barn as some other possibilities I was looking into haven’t eventuated. If any of the Commercial Noggin regulars have suggestions for interesting places to visit please bring them along as any ideas are more than welcome. The Tunnel Barn will be open for anyone who is interested in what hides within, and to see what the dedicated grounds maintenance people have available to continue their good work. Neil Shaskey

9-90s Report

9 - 90s

Hi to you all

Well, it was raining so not as many cars came out for the day. About 20 odd cars and around 40 people. We were told a taxidermist was on the programme. How exciting and different. After a pleasant drive through Lincoln and surrounding countryside we arrived in Dunsandel and were divided into two groups to be shown round what was the largest taxidermist business in New Zealand. And what a day it turned out to be! Everyone was flabbergasted and I can’t remember having had such an interesting day. Our group was taken round by a very interesting young man who answered every question and told us stories of where he had been hunting around the world. He is a taxidermist and trophy hunter and has been to Australia, USA, British Colombia, Middle East, Kurdistan and all around New Zealand and he is only 25 years old. On display were brown and black bears, stags, birds, fish and I don’t know how many other different animals. A very comprehensive exhibit. Everyone I spoke to really enjoyed themselves and were amazed. From there we went to the new Dunsandel Community Centre for lunch and the usual raffle. I just broke even with the small attendance. A big thank you to Ken and Ruth Hands and friends for a great day out. November 8 - Organiser – Bruce Parker - Meet at the Yaldhurst Pub Carpark at 10:00am December 13 - Christmas Lunch at the Woolston Club, Hargood St. Meet at 11.30am. A hot ham roast and a hot pudding $25.00 a head. Please put your name on the list at the November outing or ring me on 332 7926 before December 10. Looking forward to seeing you all next month. J K and the team PS If you stayed at home because of the weather you missed a good day! 10

Swap Meet Report The big weekend has now gone, so time to look back and see how it all went. Once again, our efforts were dampened somewhat by rain, with only one day of the three (Friday) being warm and dry. A good attendance that day, as well as a very reasonable attendance on the very wet Saturday. Sunday was a wash-out, with more than half the sites packed up and gone by Saturday night, and those that were left then packing up on Sunday morning. On Sunday, display vehicles also were being removed at a faster rate than they were arriving. A few puddles and a bit of mud made conditions unpleasant, and we stood down the gate personnel at 10.30am. Despite this, the financial outcome is OK, but no-where near what we were hoping for. The new wrist-band ‘ticket’ system worked well, and the feedback from the gates was that most people were very happy to wear them, especially those coming and going throughout the weekend. It was disappointing that a few people (some, members of our branch) refused to put them on. We will definitely be using the same system next year. One thing that was particularly evident this year was site-holders arriving very early, with a steady stream arriving from Wednesday afternoon, and all day Thursday. Unfortunately, this meant that buyers were also arriving, expecting early bargains, and we needed people on the gates. Without a set roster for that day, the committee was stretched to resource it. A few members stepped in to help, which was really appreciated. We may have to look at restricting access until Thursday at the earliest, or we risk the event becoming a Thursday/Friday and Saturday event, and having nothing for the general public to come and see on the weekend. It is essential that we get public through the gate to achieve financial success, and when they arrive, we need things for them to buy and see. On the plus side – the vehicle displays this year were some of the best we have seen, and the main arena looked a treat especially on Friday, when it was filled almost to capacity with a huge variety of vehicles of all makes, models and ages. Thanks to everyone who took the time to 12

bring your club car out and put it on display. There was also reportedly very good trading on sites on both Friday and Saturday, and this was backed up by money withdrawn from the eftpos machine – a record amount! The Swap Meet Committee have already had the debrief meeting, and as usual, we’ve got a list of things that we will alter next year. For the next few months, however, there will be a lull in activity so they can take a well-earned break – they all deserve it! Lastly, a big thanks to everyone who pitched in and made it work again. Whatever you contributed was certainly appreciated! Colin Hey

October 2017 Noggin Display Last month’s Noggin Display was Motor Cycles & Mopeds under restoration or to be restored. Thank you to the following members for displaying their motor cycles/ mopeds especially Owen & Martin Gent who brought along boxes of bits and pieces to assemble and Barry Hay, for his nice 1918 Harley Davidson. At one stage during the evening, it was brought to my attention, that the partly restored M/Cs etc. had a large gathering of spectators around them, more than at some other displays, creating a lot of interest. Barry Hay - 1918 Harley Davidson. Russell Barnard - 1952 Kreidler moped. Mike Ludecke - 1930 Calthorpe Ivory. Owen & Martin Gent - 1912 New Hudson, 1930 New Hudson & 1961 Vespa Sport Ique Future Noggin Displays. November: One Make Car Club Winner. Cortina ( Swap Meet.) December: Motorcycles from the M/C Annual Rally. February: Winners from the Women Drivers Rally. (They have been contacted) If there are any members that have a collection of pedal cars, or a pedal car, that could be used as either a full or part Noggin Display in the future (it would be in middle of next year) please contact me. I would also like to include scaled down children’s vintage cars etc. made by a clever Dad, or Grandad for their children or grandchild, either powered or pedal power. If you can help, please call. I have one so far. Don Muller 3856850. Thanks. 15

Results – Veteran Vintage PV Publican’s Choice Time Trial Hard Luck Onion Award Oldest Rider Overall Winner

Bevas Binnie Joseph McClintock Ralph Weir Robert Hutton Barry Jones Quentin Wearing Mike Glenday Ralph Weir Joseph McClintock

The run was held over the weekend of 14/15 October to Akaroa. We started at Hornby with 30 riders heading off to Greenpark where we went to two private collections ranging from motorcycles, horse drawn vehicles, oil tins, hats, a barber’s chair to a display of a blacksmith’s shop . A BBQ lunch in the sun was enjoyed before we headed over the hill to Akaroa, some via Summit Road and down Long Bay Road. The night was based at The Grand Hotel, hosted by the publican Eric Ryder, a long time supporter of the run. On the Sunday morning Eric awarded the Publican’s Choice Trophy along with prizes such as oldest rider and the onion award, you guessed it – an onion but with a bottle of wine to take away the taste. 16

There was a time trial on the Sunday morning and this year riders had to calculate how long it would take Russell Gillard to ride his Triumph Tiger 70 from Akaroa to Little River - he took 28 minutes. Barry Jones recorded 27 minutes taking out the time trial award. Coffee at Little River before heading through to Tai Tapu Hotel for lunch and trophies awards. We must have had a record number of break-downs this year – five in total. Bent valves, broken cam follower, a beaded edge tire came off after the tube went flat and the rider managed to steer off the road into the long grass and very soft ground coming to a stop still upright. There was a broken primary chain and loose nut on the crank through to an early Triumph losing compression coming up out of Akaroa. All repairable, at home, but not on the side of the road. Thirty riders this year, maybe a bit down in numbers but with family events, work and one rider off to Aussie to ride Australian roads, we can’t complain. They will be back next year. Mike Glenday (organizer)

BRIAN ARTHUR GOODMAN Brian joined the South Canterbury Branch in January 1960 (as supported by an entry in his father's diary dated Monday 15th January 1960) He held the office of Chairman, Treasurer and Club Captain during his membership of that branch and was Branch Delegate for approximately ten years. Brian was Chief Marshal in 1968 for the National Rally held at Timaru and in 1981 he was the Chairman/Organiser for the National South Island Easter Rally held in the same area. He has also held the office of National Speed Steward (1980 - 1995), National Club Vice Captain (1986.1989) and was the publicity officer and committee member for the Commemoration of "100 Years of the Car". Following a shift to Christchurch, in 1986 Brian joined the Canterbury Branch and in November 1992 - June 1997 was the inaugural co-ordinator for the 25 and 35-year badges for the branch. Brian owned many different makes and models of vehicles including some interesting names, such as, Ansaldo, Clement Bayard, Bentley, Reliant, AC Sociable and also a Veteran Triumph Motor Cycle combination. His fun car was an original MG Midget which he and Gay covered well over 40,000 miles. As well as supporting local and other branch rallies and events, he had been a competitor in rallies held in Australia in 1978 and South Africa in 1983. Brian was the Chairman of the organising committee for the 2010 National South Island Easter Rally hosted by Canterbury Branch. A dedicated and loyal member of the Club, Brian enjoyed the support of his wife Gay (a member in her own right since 1962).

VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP (VOG’s) October 2017 run Inclement weather on the 10th October created a delay for our October run. A go-to date of Tuesday 17th was set and this turned out to be a good choice, even though the meteorologists had predicted rain around midday, we were still looking for it by the time we headed home …. whew another dry expedition. Our run this month was arranged by Bob Kinnaird and we saw yet another record breaking attendance of 13 riders arrive at the start point at the Woolston Club carpark in Hargood Street this included some first time riders viz : John Kuipers of 9-90’s fame, Lyn Parlane and Ian Gilmour. Welcome guys to our select group of ‘Solex Stalwarts. Bob had organised a short interesting run around some of the quieter back streets of Woolston this time. Although, at times, we had to brave the traffic along Pages Rd & Dyers Rd which was quite nerve wracking, for some, as we had several stragglers held up by traffic lights and heavy pantechnicons, that thought they had more rights to the road than our delicate machines, of course they always win out in the end. Fortunately we all made it safely to this month’s destination of “Retro Classic Cars” in Garlands Rd where VCC Club member Joe Grose kindly allowed us to peruse the showroom and workshop to view all the American cars from the 50’s and 60’s that they have on show. Some very smart vehicles they have there, interesting to hear that there is more demand for left hand drive cars than our normal right hand drive British models. One vehicle there of interest to me was a “Kaiser” (never heard of that name before) I thought this was quite a spectacular car, but then that’s only my personal view! While we were there, somebody pulled in with a 1957 Chevrolet that was a one family owner car, which had started its life as a taxi in New Brighton and driven by the grandfather of the guy that brought it in. The Chev’ had that old patina appearance, simply untouched with original paintwork and upholstery, albeit, a bit the worse for wear but good to keep it looking that way!

A short ride via Radley St and Hargood St then back to the Woolston Club and the end of the run and lunch. Thanks Bob for organising this. Royce VOG1
