Chairman’s Report We had a very successful annual Awards Dinner on 22nd and were privileged to host our National President Diane Quarrie and husband Geoff. Fifty year awards were presented to Don Bennetts, Don Muller, Graeme Shaskey, Tom Smith and Peter Midgley. Unfortunately, Peter was taken to hospital that morning, so the presentation was made to his son Peter, and Diane visited Peter in hospital the next morning to present him with his badge. Ivan Hibberd was presented with his 60 year award, but unfortunately Ivan had a fall and had to leave early for medical treatment. I am pleased to report that both Ivan and Peter are at home and recovering well. Only a week now till Swap Meet weekend. Thanks to all who have volunteered to assist the Swap Meet committee to run the event. We all are keeping our fingers crossed for a fine weekend this year. I hope you all have plenty to buy and sell. The bar is now completed except for some finishing touches. The improvements seem to have been well received from the comments I have heard. Thanks to all who have helped achieve this. Also this month we have the Girder Fork Motorcycle Rally and the Annual Veteran Rally on the 28th. The All British Day will also be held at Cutler Park on the same day as the Veteran Rally, so come out and enjoy the day. We also have the annual Motorcycle Rally and Vintage Rally coming up in the first two weeks of November. Happy Motoring John Coomber

Swap Meet Pricing Update Currently Swap Meet sites are $45 for the three day event. From this year’s event site holders who renew their site at the Swap Meet weekend will continue to pay $45. Those who purchase a site after the Swap Meet will pay $55 for a site. Thus the site holders who renew during the event gain a real monetary benefit as well as ensuring that they retain their site for the following year. Entry to the Swap Meet remains the same at $5 for a one day pass or $10 for a three day pass. The Swap Meet Committee.

Secretary’s Report
SUBSCRIPTIONS: To receive the deduction you must have paid by the 20th October 2018 Still an ongoing problem of members paying their National Subscription to the Branch instead of National Office. These members will have their payments returned in due course and will have to repay to the correct account. (which is on the account). You will only know your subs have not been paid when you do not receive your Beaded Wheels or Hub.The ONLY time you pay membership moneys into the Branch account is when you join the Branch and are not paying cash or by cheque or credit card. We then forward these to National Office with your Application by writing out an old fashion cheque. Internet banking is a great way of paying accounts etc but please be careful. Remember when paying Rallies or events being run by the Canterbury Branch to make sure you are paying to the correct account you have set up on your banking. VCC NATIONAL or VCC BRANCH (Remember: “Surname Event” example: “Smith Awards Dinner” membership number if you have room. Club Captain’s Report The “Under 25 year olds” and “Women Drivers” Rally was a successful event and enjoyed by all those who took part – although it would be nice to have a few more junior drivers. The venue for our lunch stop was Wilsons Mill Gardens near Ohoka. On behalf of everybody I would like to thank Kelvin Finlay for welcoming us to his home and wonderful gardens. The big new shed was also a great addition to his property, already housing quite a few veterans with more to come! The rally finished at Cutler Park with a great afternoon tea put on by the Sword family. My thanks to Andrew Morrison and Graeme Sword and family for organizing another successful day out. Thanks also to Tony Meikle, John Coomber, Brian Williams, Rod Thrower and Ivan Hibberd for helping out with field trials and parking etc. The Awards Dinner was the other big event for September – another enjoyable evening organized by Leigh & Tony Craythorne. Thanks for all the effort Leigh & Tony and on behalf of our branch I would also like to thank Diane Quarrie, our National President, for presenting the trophies along with the help of John Coomber. Unfortunately Ivan Hibberd our 60year recipient, had a fall off the stage and injured himself. However, he was back home by morning and you will all be pleased to know he is OK now. The Homestead Run has been organized with information in this HUB. Cheers, Dave Inwood

Motorcycle Report There has been the opportunity for a few runs this last while, and with the warmer weather on its way will be even more pleasant. Past Events 12th September – Noggin Night. This was held at Upper Classics, 2 Hall Place, Middleton. About 28 of us listened to host Bruce Shadbolt as he described the goings on of the business. We viewed many cars under restoration, and also there were one or two motorcycles being worked on as well. An adjournment was made to Speights Ale House at Tower Junction afterwards for a quickie before they closed at 9.30 pm….????? 22nd September – Scooter & Small Motorcycle Run. Very successful, about a dozen bikes turned up for a 100 km run in fine sunny weather. See elsewhere for the organiser’s report. 23rd September – Working Bee at M/C Corner. Good turnout, with several jobs being knocked over. A doorway was cut into a concrete tank so we have a dry house for firewood. Two grilles and an electric fan were installed into the kitchen container so it does not become a bake-house during hot times thus destroying the fridges…. In preparation for the Swap Meet a load of firewood has been brought inside to keep the late night revellers warm… 29th September – Fish & Chip Run. In the future as I write this, but in the past when you read these notes. Full report next month, but suffice to say a garage raid on a member’s shed out at Rolleston is planned…
Coming Events 10th October – Noggin Night, at Motorcycle Corner. If it is a cool night probably the fire will be going. 11 – 14 October, Swap Meet Weekend. The Motorcycle Section has been volunteered to do the toilets over the weekend, Phil Jeeves is organising a roster. 27 October – Girder Fork Run, to Akaroa. See elsewhere for more details, but after the start we precede to a private motorcycle collection then on to the Little River Hotel for lunch. Trophies awarded at Tai Tapu Hotel Sunday lunch stop. 27th October – Fish & Chip Run. Same day as the start of the Girder Fork Rally, so probably will be a run out to Little River to meet up with the Girder Fork entrants at lunch at the Little River Hotel. 3rd November – VCC Canterbury Branch Annual Motorcycle Rally. Starts from Cutler Park, see elsewhere for entry form and other essential details. 14th November – Motorcycle Noggin. Not organised yet, but will be advised either in next Hub or by emailed notice to all motorcycle members. A bit shorter than last month, but hopefully all is there for you to know what is going on in the world of 2 wheels… Keep the rubber to the road, Cheers, CML

2018 Awards Dinner Saturday 22 September 2018 saw the main hall at Cutler Park all decked out in splendour to celebrate presentations of 5 x 50-year badges and certificates, 1 x 60-year, 3 x 35-year and 4 x 25-year badges. (1 x 25-year and 3 x 35-year badges will be presented at a later date. See elsewhere for the list of recipients.) VCC National President Diane Quarrie and Geoff were special guests, along with the 50-year and 60-year recipients and their spouses. The atmosphere was very convivial and the evening a tribute to the long support of the branch and club by the 50-year and 60-year recipients who (along with their partners, as well as Diane and Geoff) were hosted with complimentary meals, drinks and nibbles. The room looked a picture with the tables decorated with candles in gold holders, gold serviettes and beautiful floral arrangements (by Esme Humm) as well as gold table runners for the four top tables. Esme also made the flowers presented to the Awardees' wives/partners as well as to Diane and Christine Coomber (our Branch Chairman’s wife.) Diane presented the certificates and badges between the dinner courses deliciously cooked and presented by Annette and Lindsay Painter (branch members). There was good support from friends, family and branch members in what has become an anticipated occasion. Our thanks are recorded to the two wine waiters (Greg Lamb and Mark Drury) who looked after our special guests and also to the bar staff (Gill and Kevin Stevenson, who competently served us all. An enjoyable evening was had by all and one we can look forward to next year for the 2019 Annual Awards Dinner.

A letter from England I recently received my copy of the “Bullnose and Flatnose” magazine from England. Inside was an article about a member’s restoration and his search for a drag link. On holiday in NZ he was directed to get in touch with the VCC Canterbury. He describes his experience in locating a part. As he was unsure if it was the correct item he left it but some time later contacted our branch again to ask if it could be sent on. This was met with “nothing but complete enthusiasm” and the part was duly dispatched and received. It’s a glowing report of our Parts Shed hospitality including his “cup of tea and a biscuit” and to make us all feel good he ends with “New Zealanders are very friendly and warm-hearted folk, those in the VCC Canterbury being no exception.” Well done again to our Parts Shed team, your customer service has world wide recognition. Annual Scooter & Small Motorcycle Run (Saturday 22nd September) After being postponed twice because of inclement weather, we finally had a fine day for the annual scooter and small motorcycle run (bikes up go 250cc). Twelve bikes, ranging from a 1947 BSA C11 to a way-too-modern Vespa, set off from the Protocol Bar/Cafe at the bottom of Colombo St and headed through Heathcote and the tunnel, around to Diamond Harbour for the morning tea stop.
After refreshments, we headed over Gebbies Pass, through Tai Tapu, and onto Lincoln for lunch. The optional, short-section of gravel road tested the skill of those on small diameter wheels! The final stretch home, took the group back to Protocol for the prize giving, via the old Tai Tapu Road and around the base of the hills. The Best Performance Trophy went to Mike Ludecke who stalled his Honda Cub on Bridle Path Road; then upon restarting the bike, he managed to wheel-stand and completely flip the thing in the middle of the road! The publican's choice prize (judged at Lincoln) went to Royce Baker on his 1972 Honda C50. Another Honda 50 repeatedly died and was repeatedly put on the trailer, but without naming anyone, Lyn Scott eventually made it round the course...sort of! 100 kms of fun. Until next year, John Benn.

Under 25’s - Women Driver Rallies My Observations of the New Trial Format of The Young Drivers, Women Drivers Rally. The day started with a group of excited people of all ages assembled at Dave Inwood’s Property at 9.30am on the 9th September 2018. After a cuppa and large Chocolate Egg, handing out of instructions began. The group then made their way outside for the final instructions from Graeme Sword, then into their cars, assembled in the paddock, for the field tests to come. There was a mixed age group of lady drivers in a very mixed group of cars of all ages. The two youngest Male and Female drivers were excited by the challenge ahead of The Young Drivers Rally. Field tests consisted of pulling the flag up backwards, putting your front wheel on the horn button, backing into a make believe garage and finally the navigator jumping or climbing over a horse jump. Then it was off for approx 50 miles to Wilson Mill Gardens and answering some tricky questions on the way for a well earned lunch stop and visit to the brand new shed and display of Veteran Cars. A walk around the beautiful gardens just coming into spring bud. The final stretch back to the VCC grounds was a time trial with a 35mph average to be achieved. When the group had assembled in the main hall the afternoon tea of Scones, savouries, cake, and sandwiches were served by the very able Sword Family. . Then the big moment had come, who was going to win the Young Drivers Section Male or Female. The young man Taylor White who was driving a 1985 Toyota had nothing to fear taking out the trophy with a very close second by Sophie Inwood, driving a 1965 Ford Country Sedan. A great effort by both drivers. Well done to both of you for having the courage to put it all on the line. We hope to see you both at many more rallies in the future. The Women Drivers Rally was taken out by Amber Inwood in a 1947 Chevrolet and second by Julie Sword in a 1939 Hillman 3rd was Rhonda Genet in a 1972 MGBGT.

Under 25’s - Women Driver Rallies...
. Best Dressed pair were Julie Sword and Vernice Williams, Best Hat was won by Annette Meikle. I am sure the format of combining these two rallies together will be a positive step forward for the future of these two rallies. There is nothing like a bit of friendly competition to bring the best out of our younger generation. Well done Graeme and your band of helpers for another very successful Rally and maybe we can have a bit more encouragement for our younger people to give this a go, as they are our future. Rod. (Sec)

Velosolex Owners Group... (VOG’s)
If you have an article you would like published, a funny story or some photos of a recent event or rally you could share, please send them through to the Editor for inclusion in a future edition of The Hub.
22
Velosolex Owners Group (VOG’s) An apology to all our “avid readers” VOG 1 got it wrong. The August report was sent in plenty of time to our esteemed Hub Editor but alas it was sent to the incorrect email address, so for those of you who missed your monthly dose of VOG Trivia do not fret here is the August run plus a brief synopsis of our September run. August Run – The VOG’s come out of hibernation. Well the planning had been done the bikes were tuned to perfection but the day didn’t perform as good as it should, we were promised a 12 degree day with high cloud but from VOG 1’s drivers seat it was bleedin’ cold. Harden up I was told by VOG15 (John Thomson) a hardy outdoor worker, problem was I probably didn’t have enough layers of clothing on – “silly ole fool” lesson learnt. All that aside 9 riders turned up on the day including 2 new VOG members. Welcome to Tony Goddard all the way from Rangiora and Wayne Gath a one time Velosolex owner who sold his bike some time ago and has finally seen the light and purchased another magnificent model ‘3800’ Velosolex and joined our “merry throng”. Wayne is rapt with his purchase as it held together for the whole journey not like his old bike that kept dropping parts and was held together by #8 fencing wire by the time he finished a run. August’s run followed the Southern Motorway bike trail from Edinburgh Street round the back of Middelton and up over the Wigram Road bridge, always a bit of a competition when we take our bikes over “hills” as we endeavour to do it without pedal assist, there was a gruelling battle between VOG 1 & VOG 15 unfortunately VOG 1 lost but I’m sure it was the power to weight ratio that made all the difference as John is possibly 3kg lighter than me. We eventually ended up in the Longhurst Subdivision in Halswell and that was when the cold set in as a fog had started coming in from the South and down went the temperature. From Halswell it was a long cold journey to Tai Tapu and to the local Tavern and a welcome logfire to warm the chilled bones. We certainly took our time enjoying the sumptuous repast of chips and wedges that was put before us by the Chef at the Tai Tapu Hotel, that was all a delaying tactic before we had to set off on the afternoon run. But necessity prevailed and we were soon back out into the frigid climes to head off to the afternoon’s destination near Prebbleton where we viewed an amazing collection of motorbikes and a few cars thrown in for good measure. 23
Velosolex Owners Group... (VOG’s) A collection we’ve viewed before but John is always adding more to this. Chainsaws are his latest addition wow what an interesting array with some dating back many years. John plans to set these up with the blades biting into logs of timber as though they were in full action. His whole workshop and display area are absolutely pristine and he is always interesting to listen to telling us of the history of everything in his display, he is also one very clever mechanic whose knowledge on V8 race engines is well renown. From John’s it was then back to the start/finish line via Halswell Rd – quite a trek of about 35k’s !! September run (in brief) The sun finally shone for us this time on Tuesday September 11 (“9/11”) so we all ended up with an overkill of clothing, not wanting a repeat of August’s misery. A flock of 7 Solex’s were at the start this time in Prebbleton plus another 3 usual riders in cars who were recuperating from illness’ but still didn’t want to miss out on the frivolity and a day out in the sunshine. This month it was just a straight jaunt in the countryside via the Birches Rd bike trail out to Lincoln and then ducking off down Boundary Rd to cross Springs Rd and continue to Shands Rd where we turned left to head out to Springston Rolleston Rd to turn right and then left into Days Rd, left into Collins Rd to head towards Lincoln. A short diversion for a bit of variety was made through the Lincoln University grounds along South Drive and Calder Drive, crikey it sure is a busy place with many nationalities of students wandering around the grounds. Then out once again onto Lincoln Rolleston Rd and head to Lincoln Village and our lunch stop at “The Famous Grouse” we were even able to sit outside it was “bootiful”. A leisurely break was had by all and the presentation of the “Hard Luck” trophy was made to one of our newest members Tony Goddard not that he had broken down in fact all bikes made it uneventfully round the course this time so Tony was told it was VOG 1’s prerogative to nominate a winner and it was just “Hard Luck” that he was chosen. Well done Tony. That’s me for now, I told you it would be brief. Royce VOG 1

You can take your own picnic or purchase coffee and eats at the old Pub. However the owner will need numbers so let me know with your entry which is on page (?). It would be good to support the Lodge as they are opening up their gates for parking. You will need to pay on the day. Prices and details are on page (?). Saturday lunch will be provided - we will need to know numbers of people requiring lunch. Saturday night we have arranged a dinner at the Paroa Hotel at $32.50 per head. Weka Pass Railway 'English Electric Showcase' Saturday 6th October
On Saturday 6th October, Weka Pass Railway are hosting a photographers event. We are looking for cars, preferably pre mid-1970s British vehicles, to use as a backdrop for photos with our 1950’s/60’s diesel locomotives at Glenmark Station, Waipara. This will be the first time in about 30 years that there will be 5 English Electric built diesel locomotives in action in one place. Di1102, Dg770, Dg772, Dg791 and De1429 locomotives will be in attendance with passenger and goods trains. There will be a BBQ lunch available and you can ride on the trains afterwards (departing at 1:30pm and 4:30pm, fares apply), or you can follow them on the road. A short run to Waipara will leave New World Kaiapoi at 10:45am. If you would like to attend, please contact Graeme Sword (03 327 7812) or Matthew Morison (Andrew Morison’s son, 027 884 1424 or matthewamorison@gmail.com)

VCC National Day - Daffodil Rally for Cancer Perfect weather, generosity and a good cause contributed to the success of our second annual Daffodil Rally for Cancer raising a record $60,000.00! We had great feedback and attendance for the 2017 event and raised $40,000.00 for the Cancer Society. I am delighted that this year we increased the amount raised by 50%, and I am very proud of our Club and our members who were involved. There were over 3000 vehicles either on the road or on display on the day. Twenty-six branches of the VCC were involved this year and all the money raised will stay in their area and be given directly to the local Cancer Society. Many Branches have commented that the response from the general public has been overwhelming, both in attendance and in their generosity. One of the lovely outcomes of this event is the interest generated in the Vintage Car Club, which has resulted in new members. I would like to congratulate and thank those Branches involved in the day for their enthusiasm and effort which has not only benefitted the Cancer Society, but also our Club with the public profile it creates. This day is a wonderful achievement for Branches and members who can be very proud of what they have accomplished. Our National Day has become a special event for the Club, and it can only get bigger and better from here! Pop the date for next year’s Daffodil Rally for Cancer in your diary now‌Sunday 25 August 2019. Diane Quarrie National President 46
