Center for Corporate Education The Center for Corporate Education, operated by the VCU School of Business Foundation, works with businesses to ensure their employees are prepared to address challenges and seize opportunities. Companies such as Tredegar, Capital One and Altria regularly send their executives and managers to the Center for leadership programs and executive coaching. Programs are led by VCU Business professors and professional trainers. Center instructors meet in advance with company leaders to identify and deliver effective programs that meet the specific needs of each organization.

New MS Program in Computer & Information Systems Security In response to a critical business need, the Schools of Business and Engineering have teamed up to offer a new master’s degree in Computer and Information Systems Security. Bringing together the best of computer science and information systems, the program takes a broad interdisciplinary approach designed to get students to see the larger organizational, social, political, ethical and economic aspects of information security. Graduates of the 30-credit program are expected to take on leadership positions in computer and information systems security, including the position of Chief Security Officer.

VCU Takes the Lead in Nuclear Engineering Education The VCU School of Engineering partnered with Dominion three years ago to create a nuclear engineering program. The success of that program demonstrates the possibilities of corporate and University partnerships. The VCU School of Engineering now has the most complete offering of nuclear engineering education in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This offering includes an undergraduate track in nuclear engineering and a new master’s degree program in mechanical and nuclear engineering. Dominion, VCU’s partner in creating the nuclear studies program, has already enrolled employees from three different sites in the new master’s program in nuclear engineering. The master’s program is convenient to current professionals, as about half of the current students attend classes remotely. This year, teams of students from the Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering departments designed and built a nuclear reactor simulator that will electronically model the North Anna Nuclear Power Station. The simulator will be integrated into the nuclear engineering courses offered through the Mechanical Engineering Department, enabling student training in nuclear plant startup, shutdown, and accident mitigation, complementing theoretical classroom instruction.

da Vinci Center for Innovation The da Vinci Center for Innovation, a collaboration of VCU Schools of the Arts, Business, and Engineering, is a unique collegiate model that advances interdisciplinary innovation and technology-based entrepreneurship. Students involved in da Vinci Center projects participate in cross-disciplinary collaborations similar to what they’ll encounter in the corporate arena. The necessary skills for multi-disciplinary, team success can be taught in the classroom, but are sharpened in the da Vinci Center project experience under the guidance of da Vinci faculty. Students are exposed to other areas of study and delve deeply into unfamiliar research fields. It’s a new way of approaching things, that can put VCU to work for you. The da Vinci Center offers industry partners the opportunity to sponsor student projects. As corporate affiliates, industry partners gain close, personal access to the best design, business, and engineering students at VCU. Each project is kept confidential through nondisclosure agreements. Corporate sponsors may also appoint one director to the da Vinci Center’s board.

The 21st Century Engineer

According to Russ Jamison, dean of the VCU School of Engineering and former Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Smith & Nephew Orthopedics, “companies need an engineer who has not only the technical knowledge to perform engineering tasks, but also possesses an understanding of the business environment and product development.” That’s what graduates of the VCU School of Engineering offer to their employers. Undergraduate students practice applied engineering beginning in their first semester, and the majority of engineering students take at least one business course before they graduate.

The School of Engineering recently opened the Institute for Engineering and Medicine (IEM), a state-of-the-art flex lab designed to accommodate a variety of academic and commercial project needs. The IEM will offer laboratory research space for interdisciplinary projects that embrace new technologies in pursuit of high-quality affordable healthcare. The IEM includes the state-ofthe-art Nanomaterials Core Characterization Facility, which provides academia and industry access to over $4 million in new equipment, including sophisticated nanocharacterization and nano-scale imaging equipment.

VCU engineers are also ready to work when they graduate. Seventyfive percent of VCU undergraduate engineers work while attending school, and over half have had at least one engineering internship prior to graduation. Graduates are generally looking for careers in Virginia, contributing to the economic vitality of the Commonwealth.

Business & Industry Evolving Together Business is always changing, and Virginia Commonwealth University is committed to changing with it. Just a few years ago, corporate leaders from the insurance industry couldn’t find the actuarial professionals they needed. They approached VCU’s business school with the idea of developing a specialized program in the subject. Building on well-established programs in finance and insurance, and taking into account advice offered by executives in the industry, VCU developed a brand new degree program: the Bachelor of Science in financial technology with tracks in actuarial science and financial engineering. Designed to meet the growing need for quantitative modeling and analysis in finance, risk management and actuarial science, the program is technical and interdisciplinary in nature. The curriculum emphasizes courses in finance, statistics and mathematics, with supporting courses in related areas. Thanks to generous support from industry and a plentitude of jobs awaiting graduates, financial technology is now one of the most competitive programs in the business school. And, thanks to graduates of the new program, businesses in our region are poised to move ahead of the competition too.

About Dean Jamison

About Dean Grier

Russell D. Jamison joined the VCU School of Engineering as Dean and tenured professor with faculty appointments in both biomedical and chemical and life science engineering in 2006. Jamison, who has served in an advisory capacity to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, was a founding member of the bioengineering department and director of the Hoeft Technology and Management Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served as associate professor of mechanical engineering at the US Naval Academy, and senior vice president for research and development at Smith & Nephew Orthopedics, based in Memphis, Tennessee.

Ed Grier joined the VCU School of Business as dean on March 8, 2010. Before coming to VCU, Grier spent 29 years as a top-level executive for Walt Disney Company, a $38 billion member of the Fortune 500. His work with Disney spanned the globe from Tokyo to Paris, giving him priceless insight into the international perspectives needed for students to flourish now and in the future. Most recently, Grier was president of Disneyland Resort–an operation that comprises nearly $2 billion in annual revenue, 20,000 employees, and 28 labor unions.

Jamison earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Bath, England. He holds numerous patents for biomedical devices and has published extensively on the topic of tissue engineering.

With his years of experience in providing pragmatic solutions to pressing enterprise-level issues, Grier fits perfectly with VCU’s focus on providing the best in real-world knowledge and academic excellence. Before starting his career at Disney, Grier earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Duquesne University and worked as a CPA and auditor at Ernst and Young.
