a rich legacy of creative endeavor and leadership in art and design education and research since 1998. A highlight this year was our international design conference, Tasmeem Doha 2011: Synapse, Designer as Link, that brought together practitioners, educators, students and the community for workshops and to hear respected speakers present the pivotal role of designers. MEDEA (Middle East Design Educators Association) gathered to develop a forum for ongoing discussion among regional educators, and to further research dissemination, VCUQatar and Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Journals launched the

The brief moments from our year presented in this report illustrate VCUQatar’s commitment as a center of excellence for education and research in art and design. Through our programs, the university develops individual capacity to lead innovations in the creative and cultural professions in Qatar and the region. ‫‪Due to the booming nature of industry in the Gulf, there is an increased‬‬ ‫‪desire for fresh perspectives and creative approaches in all areas‬‬ ‫‪of business. This desire is being met by the growing ranks of young‬‬ ‫‪designers joining the professional sphere. At the root of their education‬‬ ‫‪are the tenants of “design thinking” which uphold both the practicality‬‬ ‫‪of meeting a community’s needs and the inventiveness required to cre‬‬‫‪ate and plan for a better future. A designer’s methods hold lessons that‬‬ ‫‪can be applied to all aspects of industry: from ideation and production,‬‬ ‫‪to sales and marketing. Design thinking, at present, is blending with and‬‬

But what is design thinking? Indeed, this strategy supports the expectations of a knowledge-based economy--design thinking is a way of problem solving that champions process and collaborative group thought over the traditional supply-demand model of industrial economy. By exploring a number of avenues for data gathering and solution finding, designers and their colleagues aim to test out creative answers to questions old and new. In a world where competition is stiff, the demand for fresh products and ambidextrous approaches for delivering them is key. This sort of creative mission attributed to design thinking

can be tremendously influential within the business world, as explained by Robert Verganti, author of “Design-Driven Innovation: Changing the Rules of Competition by Radically Innovating What Things Mean.” According to Verganti, “Design driven innovations do not come from the market: they create new markets. They don’t push new technologies; they push radically new meanings. Think of game changers like Nintendo’s Wii or Apple’s iPod.” Design thinking asks its practitioners to interpret the society they live in and provide it with goods and services that are at once entirely unexpected yet completely integral.

‫‪Verganti’s perspective is echoed by Bowman Heiden, Director of the‬‬ ‫‪Design Zone Initiative at Qatar Science and Technology Park. QSTP is‬‬ ‫‪dedicated to the cultivation of improved research methods and techno‬‬‫‪logical advancements that will further the expectations of Qatar’s 2030‬‬ ‫‪vision. In the interest of promoting the unification of design thought with‬‬ ‫‪business goals, Heiden believes that “In this new world of knowledge‬‬‫‪based business the generalist who is capable of holistic design think‬‬‫‪ing is indispensible. However, this is not sufficient, as the fundamental‬‬ ‫‪building blocks of innovation have changed as well. What is now needed‬‬ ‫‪are persons who can see both the forest and trees and understand that‬‬ ‫‪what is not seen is likely the most important.” With a multimillion-riyal‬‬

capable of lending their skills to a variety of Qatarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emerging businesses. At the forefront of diversified education for young designers is Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. VCU was the first university partner invited to join the Qatar Foundation in 1998. Inspired by the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, VCU initiated programs in fashion, graphic and interior design. Today, VCUQatar alumni are 320 strong, taking part in the emerging creative and cultural organizations in Qatar and the region. The most exciting aspect of design thought is surely its ever- renewing dynamism. This is an undeniable asset in a landscape developing as rapidly as Qatar. In the spirit of its host country, VCUQatar continues to strengthen its focus and further enrich the experience of its current students and graduates. Most recently, the university has expanded to include the first Master of Fine Arts in Design Studies program in the region, providing the advanced study of ideas and skills critical to the conception of excellent design solutions. With momentum of vision and the determination to seek out fresh approaches, the up-and-coming designers at VCUQatar are certain to have a great effect on the future of design in the Middle East. â&#x2C6;&#x2019; Lauren Maas

Every two years the international design conference Tasmeem Doha gathers scholars and practitioners to present work, discuss critical issues in design and engage with students and community members. The conference is interdisciplinary and collaborative, aiming to forge dynamic connections between creative problem solvers, students,

Much of the four day conference was devoted to workshops in which participants could design a feast, explore the role of storytelling in viral media, learn how to give traditional Islamic patternmaking a contemporary twist, or find a way to generate awareness for some of the social issues affecting Qatar.

The project evolved from its initial mandate of evaluating the feasibility of converting shipping containers for migrant worker housing into an enhanced scope of work that demonstrates the value of a holistic design approach. A distinctively different and innovative design concept transpired as the Proof of Concept. The key component of the new concept is a sustainable social model for communal living. This social model is reinforced by innovative design and planning concepts using modular, portable modules. These modules are connected with a ‘connecting architecture’, which threads through the commu-

The combination of these modules and connecting architecture is economical and can be easily configured to respond to specific site conditions and modified as the labor camp expands and contracts. A prototype is being constructed in Education City, which is expected to be completed by October 2011, and will be followed by a period of thermal performance monitoring. After a successful completion and testing of the prototype, Qatar’s Design Zone will move the concept into its next phase and build a pilot project for approximately 1,000 workers to investigate if and how this new living model influences the workers’ overall well being. The goal of this next phase is to prove sustainable economics by demonstrating increased productivity and quality of work for migrant workers in Doha.

‫خريجة جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث ريهام محمد العيد خرجت عن المألوف‪ .‬فالطالبة السعودية حضرت‬ ‫إلى قطر في عام ‪ 2003‬لدراسة التصميم الداخلي في جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر‪ .‬في عام ‪،2004‬‬ ‫كانت من أوائل الطالبات الالتي التحقن ببرنامج التبادل للدراسة في الجامعة األم في ريتشموند‪،‬‬ ‫فرجينيا‪ .‬وبعدها بفترة وجيزة انتقلت ريهام وبشكل دائم إلى جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في ريتشموند‪،‬‬ ‫وبذلك أصبحت أول طالبة يتم تحويلها من جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث في قطر إلتمام دراستها‬ ‫في ريتشموند‪.‬‬

‫‪VCU alumna Reham Mohamed Aleid is a path-breaker. The Saudi‬‬ ‫‪student came to Qatar in 2003 to study interior design at VCUQatar.‬‬ ‫‪In 2004, she was one of the first students to join the exchange program‬‬ ‫‪to study at the home campus in Richmond, Virginia. Shortly thereaf‬‬‫‪ter she transferred permanently to VCU Richmond, becoming the first‬‬ ‫‪transfer student from VCUQatar.‬‬

‫‪While pursuing her BFA in Interior Design at VCU Richmond, Reham‬‬ ‫‪worked as assistant interior designer to the Saudi-based AlEid group,‬‬ ‫‪a family-owned business. After graduating in 2007, she went on to‬‬ ‫‪pursue a double Masters in Architecture and Planning and Urban Design‬‬ ‫‪from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. During her‬‬ ‫‪studies, she worked as an architect and interior designer at Barr Inter‬‬‫‪national Architects in Washington, D.C. After she graduated in May 2010,‬‬ ‫‪she returned to Qatar and began to work as an architect with Arab En‬‬‫‪gineering Bureau (AEB), one of the top 15 ranked firms in the gulf region.‬‬

‫‪Recently, Reham joined Q.Media as project manager architect, manag‬‬‫‪ing their buildings and branches. With Q.Media now moving their offices‬‬ ‫‪into two new buildings, the Al Fardan and Al Jazeera Towers, Reham‬‬ ‫‪designed a total of nine floors in both towers to accommodate all de‬‬‫‪partments. “It was an extraordinary experience having to deal with‬‬ ‫‪so many different aspects, not just design. It was a challenge to meet‬‬

her CV and portfolio because of what it encompassed. Reham credits her stay in the US for affecting her in many positive ways. “It changed my perspective in life, gave me a chance to pursue my goals and added immeasurable value to ‘me’ through the years. I found the US to be a place that empowers you, fills you with confidence and selfesteem to create a still ground where dreams can grow.” After having lived and worked in the US for several years, Reham agrees Doha is a very different experience. She’s still in the process of adapting to this new system, “which can sometimes get really hard but I believe that out of the greatest efforts come the greatest gifts. Each day I go to work I want to make a difference. Being here is just another step in ‘building myself’ towards the next level, a Ph.D.,” says the architect whose future plans and hopes also include teaching at VCUQatar to build her academic portfolio. For now, those plans have to wait, as Reham immerses herself in the world of architecture and creates new landscapes in Qatar. − Priya D’Souza

ducing a collection called “W by Night”, a ready-to-wear line of garments inspired by the ambience, the nightlife, and the overall feel of the W at night. Selina discovered her love for fashion in high school. “I had always loved art, sketching and painting and it was my last year of high school when I started designing accessories. I filled up entire sketchbooks with drawings of shoes and jewelry.” Her interest in fashion started to grow from small accessories to dresses for herself and when it came time for her to choose which university to go to, the choice was clear. “I wanted to study fashion design. I was accepted to VCUQatar and haven’t looked back since.” 20

She is also inherently inspired by her culture and background. “I am Indian, but was born and raised in the Middle East, brought up amongst an international setting, going to American schools all my life. All these aspects of my background influence my design. I am able to create contemporary garments which are unique in

jacquards and embroidered fabrics with gauzy light chiffons and smooth silks. She also puts a lot of hand detailing into her garments, giving each piece its own transcendent touch. The opportunity to design for and sell her collection at boutiques like Cugini and the W Hotel this early in her career has helped Selina focus on what she wants to achieve in the future. She sees herself as an established designer, selling in multiple boutiques all over the Middle East and one day taking part in an international fashion week. “I can’t predict much more, part of the excitement of life is not knowing what will happen next. ment of her professional self, stating, “This was a great transition for me, because I was asked to implement and respect what I studied at VCU. The process, research, detail, all of these things were valued and applied.” After a year at her post in the Studio at VCUQatar, Nada next found herself inspired by recent events in the Arab World. She chose to pursue an opportunity at the Arabic language branch of the Qatar-held news station, Al Jazeera, explaining, “During the revolutions, I was watching Al Jazeera a lot and seeing branding and promos regarding Egypt, Yemen, and the rest. I decided as a designer I wanted to try something different. I still love print, but I thought I’d try motion.” While Nada looks forward to an opportunity to try her hand at motion graphics for the station, her current project is centered on interior branding for the new 22

by the idea of working in an environment of such importance to the professional future of her country. Nada says, “The new generation is understanding the past and the older generation is trying to be more open to our way of thinking and process. VCUQatar has student interns working at Al Jazeera as well, and when our supervisors are informed and involved in our design process, they feel a part of it and see it for its possibilities.” Nada credits her academic experience at VCUQatar as one that enriched her understanding of design’s scope while leaving her enough room to define her own identity as a young creative. She says the school “made me discover things within myself that I didn’t know I had. I loved how it started right away during freshmen year when you are allowed to explore mediums and not limit yourself. And the more you go on in the school, the more you use this creativity and outside-the-box process, but it’s directed. Limitations make you more creative, create a challenge. On a busy street in central Doha lies a boutique showcasing design labels from Qatar and around the world. Launched in Spring of 2011, the swish new outlet Moda Key in Freej Bin Mahmoud is what owner, general manager and VCUQatar alumna Latifa Al Mudahki calls a fresh, chic venue for women.

While still a fashion design student at VCUQatar, Latifa had the opportunity to intern with designer Isabel Toledo in New York. “Her workshops are very hands on. Rueben Toledo also works in the same studio and their love for art and fashion is very contagious. It is amazing to be around and absorb that energy every day,” she says explaining it helped with everything she did and still does. “It brought me close to becoming what I want in terms of my career and personally too.”

The Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF) in Kuala Lumpur 2008, where Latifa was one of the coordinators, was another stepping stone. She was in Kuala Lumpur for four months working with 150 fashion designers one-on-one. This was a huge learning experience and she discovered first-hand what it takes to prepare for a fashion show. It also kicked off her network bringing her in touch with many Far Eastern and Asian designers. “I wanted to be

With Moda Key already showcasing 21 European and Asian brands offering everything from footwear, to handbags and jewelry and a collection of handbags and cocktail dresses under her own label LFM, Latifa says she feels like a big part of what she does is head-hunt for talent. “I am constantly looking for designers and artists to have as part of our family of brands. Since the opening we have joined forces with six new designers from around the globe including Doha.” As for LFM, Latifa’s future plans include developing a production workshop at Moda Key, marketing Moda Key and LFM as a strong base for designers to showcase and for LFM to grow in the region and internationally. VCU Alumni Association Launches First International Middle East Chapter Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Association launched its first international alumni chapterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the Middle East chapterâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;on 3 May 2011 at VCUQatar. Delegates from the home campus attended the launch event, including VCU President Dr. Michael Rao and Mrs. Rao. Over 80 VCU alumni attended, representing all three VCU campuses: Monroe Park, MCV and Qatar. Alumni in attendance spanned nearly 40 years of graduates, the oldest from MCV, class of 1973, and the youngest from VCUQatar class of 2011. Hundreds of students, faculty and staff members, including some from VCUQatar, attended the event on the Student Commons Plaza. VCUQatar Day, a student initiated program, was sponsored by the VCU Student Government Association (SGA), the Green Unity Student Club, the VCU Intercultural Festival, and the Student Affairs departments of VCUQatar and VCU. Khaliji tents were set up to host various traditional Arab activities. Perfumed smoke from Arabic Oud and Khaliji music greeted visitors as they entered the tents. Participants received henna tattoos, had their names written in Arabic, ate Qatari foods, and pet a live camel.
