On behalf of Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, it is my pleasure to present the class of 2012, our 11th Bachelor of Fine Arts graduating class and the first for the Master of Fine Arts in Design Studies. These students have developed their ability to engage in issues through demanding processes that require research, collaboration, innovation, fabrication and visualization. I invite you to enjoy a glimpse of their projects and thoughts that are represented in this publication. Our graduating students have enriched our community through their projects and unique voices. They are already contributing toward the VCUQatar vision of a Qatari society that innovates through art and design. As educators, we recognize that the university experience is transformational and that learning continues past graduation. The transition from university to the next stage in life opens up new opportunities for our graduates. We trust in their intellectual and creative abilities to help them achieve all they envision, and to continue to learn with each new challenge. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Qatar Foundation and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser for providing the leadership to create an environment in which our graduates can flourish. Allyson Vanstone Dean
curatorial statement
The BFA & MFA Showcase is an exhibition of work by students graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. In addition, it is also a celebration of the creativity of each student over the past four years, and an opportunity to recognize them no longer as students but rather as fully-fledged designers. It seemed only fitting then, that from a curatorial perspective, this year’s show would be mounted as a professional exhibition, and approached in the same way as one would be expected to approach an exhibition in the ‘real world.’ Thus curatorial issues were discussed, practicalities overcome, and creative, design-based decisions required.
The Showcase has been conceived as a ‘satellite exhibition’, with visitors invited to go on their own mini-tour of our building and discover the departmental exhibition zones located over three floors. In each area, the work of individual students has been highlighted and celebrated – the culmination of their creative careers at VCUQatar. Displayed together, however, it is also hoped that the viewer will gain insight into the diversity of the curricula explored in Design Foundation, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and the MFA program in Design Studies. I would like to thank all staff, faculty and students who have contributed to this Senior Showcase exhibition and publication, and wish our graduates the very best as they embark on their new career paths as designers. Caitlín Doherty Exhibition and Speaker Curator

A languid breeze on a balmy spring night. A desert campfire shooting sparks in the distance. The sound of a lone oud drifting in the air from some unknown place. An undulating wave of heat driven by the wind conjuring an image of Lawrence of Arabia. An intricate carving in flowing line in gypsum with bits of light peeking through illuminating a quiet gathering place. These themes and inspirations all are Arabesque. The cast of this year’s production are a spirited group of women all with their own unique stories, dreams and aspirations. I’ve watched them develop and mature and carve out their individual paths in the wonderful world of design. Elizabeth’s tenacity is evident in every stroke of her empowering contemporary collection; Marion’s intricate designs capturing nature’s beauty forespeak her destiny in the
fashion industry; presenting fashion as architecture’s feminine counterpart is what Mona, an interior design double major, brings to this montage; and the enchantment of the silver screen and all of its components is where Sara hopes to take her learning. Each piece of this cultural mosaic is an inspiration to individuals and the fashion world at large to push the boundaries of style and of life, while embellishing them with an eclectic expression and cuttingedge mix of tradition. Each piece of this remarkable mosaic I will cherish for bringing so much radiance and enchantment to my life. Thank you, seniors. I wish you immense joy and success! Curious to discover the world, I use my experiences in different countries to inspire me. As a fashion designer, I always want to push boundaries with my designs in a creative way.

Since I am still experimenting and making discoveries all the time, I am always open to new inspiration. I love to focus on small things that people often overlook or may not find interesting and use these elements in my fashion collections. I am realizing that I like to transform something repellent and disgusting into something beautiful; this is how my ‘Diptera’ Collection was inspired. Diptera is the Greek term used to scientifically classify flies. My challenge was to create garments that people would want to wear inspired by a creature that they would normally find repulsive. I hope to continue to pursue fashion and explore this juxtaposition of repulsiveness and elegance; it is something I would one day like to be recognized for as a fashion designer. I believe that our surroundings have beauty in them and my dream is to help people discover this beauty by wearing my clothes.

With influences from the two majors, Interior Design and Fashion Design, I was inspired to choose ‘Edifice’ as the theme of my collection. Exaggerated architectural forms are the highlighting elements that I was focused on, while designing this collection. My collection has form, volume and shape, with its unique boldness and femininity at the same time. Structurally interesting, and construction methods being the elementary foundation of my collection, I proudly derive my inspirations from my first major, which is a sea of buildings: exterior as well as interior forms. My intentions were to superimpose the principles of form, shape and construction of design in fashion design. This is the direction that my collection is leaning towards. Bright colors reminiscing and hyping up the summer mood, haute couture directed, this collection is designed to hone any evening, be it a party, a fashion show or a statement wear. Designed to uplift the femininity and boldness of any lady, regardless of her age, ‘Edifice’ is an epitome of an innovation in fashion, which derives its roots from a different field of design.

As a child I was awed by the worlds of fashion and art. While I pursued writing and painting, I could never have dreamt that by 2008 I would be creating a fashion line of my own.
12
Fashion is not all glitz and glamour. We started out sophomore year believing that it was going to be easy and that garments would magically come together in the end. We were oblivious to the extensive process involved, but learned that it’s the constant work behind the scenes that enables this world to appear beautiful and effortless. I enjoy experimenting, seeing how different fabrics interact and move. I love the challenge of trying to marry certain fabrics, especially when they seem too different to work together. I have had some major fashion disasters, but always learned from them, and now clearly know the direction I want to take in my designs. After a trip to Cannes, I found myself inspired by the glamour of the ‘50s and that of Grace Kelly. This collection is entitled ‘To Catch A Thief’, after Alfred Hitchcock’s film. It is feminine and classy, but also versatile and can be transformed into something edgy with a few accessories.

Shapes of skyscrapers in Doha are the basic design elements in my collection, ‘Doha Baroque.’ Just as Baroque architecture and its embellishments tried to touch emotions rather than create a visible statement of wealth, Doha’s skyline is similarly dramatic and powerful to both locals and expatriates. The modern revision of traditional Islamic motifs seen in Jean Nouvel’s skyscraper and the corset-like, rhombic steel frame of the Tornado Tower are forms that inspired my surface details and influenced my choice of fabrics. The Zigzag Towers encouraged the creation of more masculine and dynamic-looking women’s wear. Layering was incorporated in homage to the feminine romance of abaya silhouettes. I focus on simplicity and function in the movement of the clothes, but ultimately I want my pieces to empower women. Qatar is not only absorbing multinationals as a workforce, but also incorporating different lifestyles and cultures into its own. With the broad geographical backgrounds of Doha’s residents, there is a strong possibility of the city becoming a new fashion hub. In my collection, I imagine how women of Qatar, whatever their culture, will dress to present themselves in an expressive and contemporary way, while maintaining a bit of romance, elegance, and sophistication.

Design to me is a magnificent way to communicate. I have always been passionate about how design is a powerful visual instrument to change people’s lives. By being well versed in cultural, historical, political and social change around me, my designs are often informative, eye-opening and cutting edge. Constructive and well thought-out design enables me to address these salient topics in society and arrive at a favorable outcome. My main inspirations as a designer have been my surroundings, the community I am part of, the culture I come from, and the diverse environment I live in. Throughout my studies, I found myself interested in relating design to the world of education. I want to make a positive change in our communities by engaging core aspects of design such as teamwork, collaboration and critical thinking and applying them to modern day societal issues. I personally believe this will have a positive effect on social development and growth and benefit humanity.

Design is a journey in the world for art. As a designer I learned the particular required steps to achieve an artistic and creative design solution. The challenges of my personal journey occurred when I was working on a personal project that had to engage a specific audience in the same interest. Clearly I have enhanced my knowledge on history of film, international play of intertextuality, and ability in organizing layout, type, photography and mixed media. My design skill set has improved in many directions so as my collaboration capabilities. I appreciate negotiation with other teams and to implement their learning to mine. Moreover, observing team members raised my confidence and self-faith. My vision for the future is to become a freelance designer and to show my artistic abilities in Doha, and a public designer for a government private sector.

I believe that design utilizes different tools in order to convey a message to a particular audience. Approaches to communication include a focus on ‘type-based’ design that is a variation of using letters or even words to represent a concept, ‘image and type’ design that combines both styles together, ‘symbols, logos and logotypes’ based and inspired by abstract forms. I have always found myself interested in ‘image-based’ design, which means developing and using an image to frame an idea. Through graphic design, I have found a powerful visual way of communicating ideas. Being a graphic design student made me realize that each type of these approaches has its own importance and represent different, creative and visual ways to approach my work. After learning the essentials and principles of graphic design, I started developing my own style. Illustrations are one of my favorite modes in graphic design and it is one of my strengths. This style reflects my personality as well as a skill that I would like to develop further in my future projects and career.

When I first came to VCUQatar I thought I would understand all about design in four years. I thought that graphic design was just a tool for me to express my ideas. This wasn’t completely true, for I still have many more discoveries to make in this field. Graphic design, to me, is not all about making posters and advertisements for clients. Graphic design is a tool for problem solving, whether the problem is tangible or not. My education has opened my eyes to a world of which I was not aware. Now I cannot undo what I learned. I will never look at a poster, type and color the same way. I look back at the four years and I know this is just the beginning of an interesting journey.

Walt Disney said, “All our dreams can come true - if we have the courage to pursue them.” Design has changed my life in so many different aspects. Joining VCUQatar has been a great blessing, and has taught me many things not only about design but also about my surrounding. I have come to realize how important, powerful, and influential design can be. The potential of design is enormous. As people become more aware of it, the more significant and persuasive design becomes. The knowledge I have gained from VCUQatar, helps me to design and create my own life. Design has taught me a lot about discipline and how it can impact and empower me as well as the people around me. Design has truly changed the way in which I see the world. I can’t wait to explore this realm of design.

We have all seen something at a point in our lives and stopped to think “This is so cool, I want to make something like that!” or “I want to be like him/her.” I believe that graphic design is a facilitator of creativity and innovation and that is, in turn, practically the very essence of graphic design. I have learned that the power of thinking like a designer is a vital tool in almost any profession whether it’s commercial, political or even social. The more I dive into the sea of graphic design the more I value the impact it has on everyday life. As a designer myself, I would like to be able to create work that holds value and allows me to give back to my community. Through my work and innovative design, I aspire to be a successful woman and by success I don’t mean it in the materialistic sense. I would rather be successful in achieving my hopes and dreams while still holding on to my values.

Graphic design is, at this point in history, the most important facilitator of communication. Studying graphic design at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar helped broaden my knowledge and boost my level of creativity. We are always encouraged to think outside the box, explore, and experiment with anything and everything that comes to our minds. My goal is to make a multi-disciplinary contribution to my country’s economy through applying knowledge and enhancing individual experience. Throughout my designs, I tend to embed traditional and cultural components in order to enrich my work with an aspect of my roots. VCUQatar gave me an insight into how I want to proceed with my future career. It has opened a lot of opportunities that will enable me to fulfill my goals as an individual and designer.

There are many definitions and explanations of what graphic design is. But the one that I believe in the most says, “design is putting focus on what matters.” Anonymous Accordingly, I am interested in projects, which impact the environment and tackle social problems. Personally, I feel that graphic design is more than just designing a logo or an advertisement for a company. It is mainly about being able to visualize one’s thoughts efficiently and memorably. Moreover, I am enthusiastic about layout design and typography that helps me to convey my message to the audience. Throughout my work, I try to combine my goal of using design to make a difference and to make the message easier to perceive.

I am inspired by the beauty of nature and influenced by the rich Arabic culture and the interwoven foreign cultures that I have been introduced to in Qatar. After attending VCUQatar for four years, I can finally pronounce myself a graphic designer who is excited to see what the field has to offer, a designer who will always be on the lookout for things to learn, to apply and to develop. In fact, I also announce myself as a theoretical thinker, problem solver, conceptual knitter and a verbal-to-visual interpreter. I especially enjoy working on print, illustrations and interactive designs. I am, however, able to keep an open mind for new possibilities. I aim to keep an alert eye for sources of inspiration. I see design in every nook and cranny, which helps me add a new dimension to each project I work on. I am driven by curiosity and hunger for knowledge. My goal is to keep pushing the boundaries and going beyond what I initially conceptualize when I start a project. I challenge myself to take ideas further. I am a tireless seeker of ingenuity.

Graphic Design is a visual method of communication, where an individual could reach a wide range of audiences through a certain design approach. In fact, diverse subject matters and issues are taken into consideration and attempt to be solved through design in general. Historically, many societal issues have been addressed through design. My personal design style is seemingly very simple, yet direct and sophisticated. In fact, I mainly rely on this approach, in order to directly reach the target audience. Therefore, I attempt to avoid chaotic, busy designs and compositions, because of its potential to distract the audience. In addition, I believe that the field of design could essentially break and eliminate several constraints and limits. In fact, it could significantly reduce and diminish numerous cultural boundaries, uniting us into one global society.

I believe Graphic Design is a universal language that can transcend political, social and cultural boundaries. This discipline facilitates people’s lives by clarifying information, interactions and experiences. Everything surrounding us is designed, from the newspaper we read daily to our favorite mobile application. Without graphic design we would be receiving overwhelming messages, both verbal and nonverbal, explicit and implicit. Graphic Design imposes meaning on the world. Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar (VCUQatar) is a place where ideas are formed and transmitted through a multicultural environment where each student is encouraged to collaborate and produce an innovative outcome. VCUQatar is the
inspirational platform that propelled my ideas and thoughts into a tangible reality. Consequently, my priority is to reflect and preserve my cultural heritage and tradition through design because these attributes are the component’s that make us unique and creative. I can claim that my passion for art and print design increased dramatically through my four years at VCUQatar. I developed a critical eye and understood how to transition from problem seeking to problem solving by developing an individual project brief that manifested the design process. My personal design process seeks to produce a wellexecuted conceptual design with the focus on culture and attention to detail.

40 I believe that design is the essential platform that determines the success of a specific message. Many believe that graphic design is only a way of adding aesthetic value to our surroundings, especially in this part of the world, when in fact it is vital for everyday life. As a graphic design student at VCUQatar, my four years here have exposed me to different aspects of this field. They have opened up my mind to new ideas and have enhanced my creativity. As an individual, I believe that there is no better way to convey the message other than to visually express it with the influence of the culture that surrounds me.
Anyone can claim a certain style that could be expressive of their nature, but to be a graphic designer it is important to keep a broad mind and be willing to step outside the boundaries of the norm. None of my ideas or designs can be implemented without extensive research on the subject. I am able to create a unique representation of the message through my knowledge based on research, my culture and my interest in experimenting with different materials. Design plays a vital role in our lives and every interpretation counts. It is up to us designers to convey the right message.

Through design thinking, process, and products, I believe I can help change situations and behaviors in Qatar. Empowered through design education from VCUQatar, I have begun exploring how design can be developed as a sustainable, social and cultural resource. I now find inspiration in personal experiences and everyday life while developing an analytical perspective for problem seeking and solving. I am passionate about narrative design. I find the tools of photography and filmmaking to be a powerful way to tell stories that express myself in innovative ways. Another area my passion lies in, is interactive information design. I am enthralled with how data can be structured and layered to simplify concepts into dynamic diagrams that can be accessed through interactive interfaces.

Being the competitive type of person that I am, the university environment helped me sharpen the edge of my ambition and hasten the tempo of my performance in all classes. The Graphic Design program allowed me to take advantage of many available opportunities through which I became willing to excel and learn more from my field of study. I have made great friends who were always there to push me further, to exceed my limits and gained knowledge for my future career. I walked into VCUQatar without having clear expectations of what I was about to experience for the next four years of my life. After studying Graphic Design, my way of thinking and knowledge in the field of design was broadened. I had applied to this university because of my love for illustration and my growing desire to discover the world of design, especially in the ways in which it impacts today’s modern world. In illustration, the facial features of the human beings particularly compel me. The details and expressions are so powerful and full of meaning.
Today I approach and understand design from a more detailed perspective that combines my passion and interest in developing skills in photography, illustration and typography, along with branding and advertising. I am fascinated with the need to include elements of psychology and marketing in aspects of my work. Simplicity is the most important feature in my work because I believe it plays an effective role in design. Personally, too much detail could be messy and disturbing, so I often work on simple and effective designs, as I do believe they affect and attract the audience in a better way.

Growing up in an artistic environment watching my mother paint, art gradually became a passion and inspiration for me. This interest slowly yet steadily developed in me through the years and I moved forward towards pursuing a career in the field of design. Four years ago, I joined VCUQatar with a motive to pursue a degree in Fashion design. Being an Indian, and having a cultural background that is rich in the area of fashion, I was interested in designing and developing my own line. My foundation year is what made a difference in my choice. It opened up my mind towards other opportunities, and gave me the feel of working in each design zone. As I worked on the projects, my interest towards Graphic design began to distill and solidify with time. This growing interest allowed me to make a concrete decision to pursue a career in this field.
I love the integral concept of visual communication, and the depth of thinking in Graphic design. I find it to be a very stimulating subject, as it enables me to shape the society’s visual landscape. It is a huge field that is comprised of a multitude of options from which to choose. I am very keen and passionate about designing logos, visual maps, and Typographic illustrations including using collage. I would prefer to work with, or collaborate with a company that deals with branding, and publication designs. I am looking forward to this new chapter of my life as my toes begin to touch the sea of intellectual, pragmatic challenges, and the social opportunity that will unravel as time unveils itself.

A clever designer should know how to present his /her concepts while working with limitations, because that convinces the client that the designer can be creative with what he/she has been given. In addition, limitations assist to stimulate artistic and critical thinking in order to design extraordinarily. Moreover, an exceptional designer should focus on visuals and functionality. Designing with the latter is more important because people in general must understand the design and its proper use; if it merely looks fancy, it does not serve the general audience but only the designer himself or the other fellow designers. In addition, a designer must know his /her audience and design something to which people can relate emotionally because, as a part of our human nature, we tend to love the familiar and reject the new or unknown. Furthermore, a true designer should be honorable by being honest with the customer while convincing him/her about design ideas and respect his /her opinions: even though the customer has no design background, he/she has the right to be taken seriously because he/she is paying for the designer’s services.

Studying graphic design has given me a clear insight to the path I want to follow in the future. I have always been interested in the graphic design field along with photography. Throughout the four years at the university, I was involved in many workshops outside of school where I found that using other tools to develop and extend my skills was just as enjoyable and supported my design education. I like to take risks within my projects, and though this may not always work, I definitely learned from my mistakes. My philosophy is that there is no place to experiment more openly than in my own university. I was able to explore different media extensively in my senior year, to bring out more of my creative side. I am very influenced by people around me, and I believe this shows in my work. I am interested in using everyday language to express a certain message rather then using the formal Arabic language or Latin in my typography projects. I believe that design is capable of communicating with various fields and subject matter. I believe that design plays a vital role in addressing many varied-issues as well as raising awareness of those issues.

Interior Design, or Interior Architecture as it is known in the Middle East and Europe, has many facets, layers, and specialties. Please keep this in mind as you view our seniors’ work and remember they were only allowed one or two images from the substantial portfolios they have amassed in three years as ID majors. Their collective images and personal statements will, however, give you a glimpse into the vast array of skills and knowledge these fine young designers have acquired. You will see manual- and computergenerated drawings; final and preliminary models that were crafted to analyze spaces or examine innovative designs; concept pieces that illustrate ideas behind design solutions; and multiple project scenarios, some looking to the future and others reflecting the past.
And know that this group’s university experiences were not limited to the classroom, but were enriched with opportunities to travel to Korea, England, Finland, the UAE, and Thailand; to study at our Richmond campus; to work in professional firms; and to collaborate in high-energy charrettes with other universities. Having navigated their way through the curriculum, these seniors now stand ready, qualified by degree and commitment, to enter the workforce as professionals. The Interior Design Department applauds them for their fine achievements and sincerely appreciates the inspiration they provide to future classes. Carolyn Freeman Chair, Interior Design

This is a contemporary design that uses an ancient Islamic style to give it a unique look. The contrast between the modern and Islamic styles is clear in this design. I have reintroduced materials and textures that have been largely abandoned in this part of the world. In my design the influence of the Qatari culture is very obvious. As a Qatari, I try to use traditional designs in order to preserve the rich culture of Qatar.

Design has always been a passion for me as an individual. By studying interior design I have been able to widen my horizon about my interest in design, and explore the relationship between a 3D space and its users. I try to push myself to take risks in coming up with designs that would take people through a journey, and provide them with an element of surprise. In my projects I create a touch of quirkiness and uniqueness that would keep viewers intrigued. I believe that technology has a significant impact in today’s design, due to its important innovation and communication tools that bring people together. As a designer, I challenge myself to implement my interest of technology to what I’m creating, by blending my design-related goals and beliefs into coming up with a final design. As designers, we have creativity and imagination that makes us always think ahead in the future. Futurism is a design movement which I, as an individual, want to pursue in creating and developing.

John F. Kennedy stated, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone.” —July 25, 1961 Rather powerful words, yet words I believe summarize my four years here at VCUQatar and my flourishing from a shy self-conscious freshman to a highly creative, confident and engaging designer. I have loved design since I was young girl. My father is an architect and I remember looking up at him at the drawing board in fascination as lots of lines and shapes filled the paper: they were artworks in themselves. Yet I was drawn to the beauty beyond those lines, the spaces in the voids, the interior environment, so I embarked on fueling my inner creativity and began pursuing a career in Interior Design. My journey at VCUQatar has been a challenging yet unforgettable one. I have come to truly know myself and my capabilities not only as a designer, but as a friend, peer and mentor.

I believe that design is not what you feel or like, it is about functionality. My passion for design led me to pursue a major in interior design. In my designs I aim to create functional appealing spaces. Another element that I like to include is the use of traditional influences that reflect my culture and my background. A major consideration is sustainability. My objective is to apply Qatar’s National Vision 2030 in my work because I want to contribute in my country’s development. My educational experience taught me to design and think critically. What I find interesting is that the design journey never comes to an end, and new projects bring new experiences. Papers and sketches are the preliminary powerful tools from which great ideas emerge.

“Sometimes it’s what you don’t do that makes you who you are.” I was never a risk taker when it came to design; I stuck to the guidelines of design basics and merely altered certain details to reach my final outcome. It was during junior year when I was encouraged to step outside my comfort zone. I had learned that I was too young to have developed a style of my own without experimenting with various design solutions. That was when I approached my restaurant project with a futuristic design strategy. This move enabled me to evolve as a designer and develop my ways of approaching projects. It broadened my perspective on material use and led me into using materials and finishes other than marble and paint as floor finishes and wall treatments. I truly believe with every project, we learn a new aspect about design that we haven’t encountered before. This goes to show the wide spectrum of opportunities available through design and design thinking. VCUQatar has been both a great life experience and design experience. It excites me to take what I have learned the past four years into the real world and to see my 3D renderings hopefully turn into reality.

68 I know how amazing it feels to be swept up in a moment that has been crafted to blow your expectations sideways; to make you feel surprise and delight at the uniqueness and unexpectedness of a new experience. I think my main objective as a designer is to seek out ways to challenge what the user knows and expects. In this respect, thinking outside the box is something that comes quite naturally to me, and is one of the most exciting aspects I see in design. As I reflect on my four year degree at VCUQatar, I realize how significantly my design perspective has been influenced not only by my interest in psychology and anthropology, but also by my passionate
involvement in the preforming arts growing up. I like to think that, over the course of my many years onstage and working with children, I’ve honed a special appreciation for the human experience- and I strive always to consider the emotionality of a design at each stage of its development. While my major areas of interest at this time are Exhibition and Retail design, my list of dream jobs includes being a set designer for the New York City Ballet.

Designers are like colors. Of course you can see things in black and white, you can name whatever you are looking at, but you may not be able to describe it, or feel it. For example if you were looking at an apple in only black and white, would you know its color? Would you feel how fresh it is? Design brings feeling to everything around us. It makes our lives the way we prefer it. Design provides better ways to convey our feelings and thoughts. As interior design students we understand the relationship between us, and the space we occupy. Studying interior design made me think of our environmental future, and the best ways to maintain green design and sustainability.

As a graduating student of interior design, I sense a privilege and responsibility to become a worldly and multicultural individual. My inquisitive and social personality spurs me to new challenges towards greater understanding and respect. As a VCUQatar exchange student, I challenged my design senses to evolve by exposing myself to different cultures and learning environments, while sharing myself on the importance of good design. I’ve expanded personal boundaries, become a more disciplined designer, affected by and affected an incredibly diverse student body, and made the most of my educational career. Our planet accommodates an amazingly diverse collection of life forms and patterns: the very reason why seemingly diverse designs can coexist harmoniously. The hurdle in all of this is in the details and understanding how those details are interrelated and interdependent. The actual facts and truths are sometimes quite elusive, yet surprising when uncovered. To affect positive change, we must model ourselves after the world we wish for. In today’s globalized and multicultural communities, design is a universal language that breaks boundaries yet celebrates diversity. I hope to contribute to the world of design that promotes and nurtures mutual understanding, empathy and positive discernment over conflict, negativity and oppression.

Art and design have always been an important part of my life. For as long as I can remember I have been drawn to interior design in particular, because it plays an important role in emphasizing the importance of a well-designed space, and how the designer can tell a story using colors, furniture and different design elements. It’s fascinating how interior design can play an essential role in not only the visual representation of space, but plays an even greater role in affecting the users’ mood and behaviors. For that reason alone, I am even more interested in the psychology of color. Since the beginning of time people have used the psychology of color within their designs. It’s an amazing element. Even with the most ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Chinese, they used its power of influence in their designs for spiritual practices such as healing and meditating.
As an interior designer there are a lot of decisions and responsibilities to deal with while designing a proposed project. However, with the knowledge gained through the past several years the design process has become a sequenced and joyful process. As a designer I find myself drawn to contemporary designs with cultural inspirations. I was mostly inspired by Karim Rashid, a renowned interior designer, who has left his mark on the contemporary design world, and has left a wonderful legacy for young designers such as myself to follow.

It is almost time to wrap up my four-year-long journey at VCUQatar that entails wonderful memories. It is incredible how fast time goes by! I have gone through a complete metamorphosis during the past four years. It has helped me boost my confidence level and enhance my communication skills. My professors helped me develop as a self-critical, socially aware individual. They encouraged my individual creativity to the course and helped me express it through the cultivation of appropriate intellectual and practical skills. I survived a heavy workload of diverse projects; as a result of which I have acquired great work ethics. What has been my favorite part was the freedom to experiment which will not be allowed in the professional world of design. The opportunity to travel was certainly amazing. The field trips organized to Seoul, Korea in Fall 2010 and Helsinki, Finland in Spring 2012 helped me peek into design and gain a new perspective. All in all, my experience has been fulfilling in every aspect.

Ever since I entered the realm of design, I have been fascinated in the multiple directions design thinking can take me. Interior design was my biggest interest for several reasons. It is a blend between 2D and 3D objects in which I can manipulate a space. A space to me is an open canvas ready for designs to be painted on. My particular interests in design throughout the years have grown into becoming more about designing furniture, playing with sensory design, and behaviors in spaces. A goal I would like to further take on is making design a field that is more recognized in the Gulf, particularly my country Oman. I think that design is still looked down upon or viewed as something that is not of importance. I hope that one day through collaborating with existing Omani designers we can create a center for design in Oman where people would showcase their work and highlight what design’s role is in society.

“I thought I learnt design until I realized that I was still alive.” Born on 10th Nov 1987, I am Neihan Yaqoob majoring in Interior Design. I come from Pakistan where the profession of Interior Design is new and is still in the process of development. However I chose to study Interior Design because I have always been a keen observer of my surroundings, and wanted to lay solid foundations for the growth and establishment of this profession in Pakistan. Generally, I am a person who searches for truth, value and meaning in life. Honesty, hard work and hope are the guiding principles of my life. I tend to believe in not what is usually seen, rather what lies beyond the seen. Design to me is more than what books and technology has to offer. It is rather a never ending exploration about “The Self.” It is a deep rooted thinking that comes from understanding life, people and experiences that nurtures a designer’s thought which in turn impacts his design philosophies and solutions. Once I enter the professional world, I aspire to be a designer who creates meaningful spaces for all people irrespective of social class and status.

“Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal—a commitment to excellence—that will enable you to attain the success you seek.” —Mario Andretti This is one of many great quotes that I have come across during my four years in VCUQatar. Success is not measured by what you own, or how much money you have, it is measured by a person’s desire to do what they do, as well as commitment, and even taking a risk in what they do to achieve something unique and spectacular. Maybe people don’t see different design elements the same way, but if we, Interior designers, are committed to what we do and take a risk then our end result will be spectacular. I also think that as designers we should commit ourselves to helping the environment. Sustainability plays a huge role for me as a designer. The world is changing rapidly, and I think that as designers, we can educate others and make a difference by choosing sustainable/eco-friendly materials in our designs.

Creating the perfect environment which provides help in shaping one’s lifestyle is the manner I look at interior design. Focusing on making something existing into something better is my goal. Interior design does involve a lot of creativity and beautification, but as a designer, my aim is to make things function rather than just beautifying a space. Sometimes our creativity might be amazing and extravagant, but at the same time, it might lead to other issues like health and safety, sustainability, etc. My aim is to provide something when needed and not for mere leisure or authority. I personally enjoy hands-on projects. Creating furniture pieces that serve specific needs is one of my interests. Analyzing an existing issue and providing a reasonable solution to it is my approach in terms of design. This is design to me. Creating something better where required or creating something when needed and not wanted.

88 “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is knowing which ones to keep.” —Scott Adams As a rising designer my aim is to make a difference and my dream is to achieve this through interior design. Interior design is more than just materials and furniture; it’s a journey that would engrave unforgettable memories in each person’s mind. I’m a creative and hardworking designer who aims to achieve the best in everything I do. My approach to design is somewhat similar to my approach for life. When designing a space, I always look at the surrounding culture, the demands of the client and then
I would add a sparkle that would make the space unique; this can be considered as a safe risk to reduce as much downsides as possible. As for my approach for life, I’m very adventurous and attracted to anything that is new and different. I like to try new things, however, I always keep in mind my safety. I enjoy working in different styles in design, as it increases my knowledge and experience in all segments. Interior design gives you ease and delight. Interior design is my dream. Together, we make the world a better place.

I believe passion is the key to success. If I am passionate about anything I am doing, I will try my best in doing it. To me succeeding is doing my best. “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure.” This quote by Colin Powell encourages me to take risks and show what I want through my work without hesitating, then learning from my mistakes. I feel that my passion towards interior design will always open new paths and ideas to the world we live in today. I would like to express my knowledge and creativity to today’s world. The past four years I spent at VCUQatar have shaped me as a student and taught me a lot about myself. I will always strive to excel and learn and give the most I can throughout my life.

Before my course at VCUQatar I thought that, in order to create a successful design, every mistake should be eliminated. However, as time went by I learned how to think openly enough to accept mistakes, yet critically enough to know which ones I should keep. Sometimes an ingenious moment occurs when you let your guard down, and the theory of right and wrong fades. Arriving in Qatar six years ago, I would never have expected to be an Interior Design graduate. It was something that always interested me but I did not see it as a career I wanted to practice. However, after my sister began her Graphic Design degree at VCUQatar, some of her passion started rubbing off on me and made me want to pursue Interior Design. I realize that it is an ongoing process, never static and always a challenge and makes being an Interior Designer more enjoyable. I am so glad I chose this course and I am pleased with my progress and final design concepts.

I am a young Qatari designer who has learned a lot over the past four years. My experience at VCUQatar has been tremendous. It has taught me to use my talents and capabilities to create designs that improve interior spaces. I believe that design has a social function and it is my aim as an interior designer to use my designs to improve people’s lives and how they function in space. My goal is to create environments that become a source of happiness in the lives of other people. I believe that a good design can make an ordinary life more meaningful. This is what I strive for. I hope that I can use my skills to turn people’s dreams into reality by making harmonious spaces. My design vision is to play with form and function to create spaces that function on the principle of betterment and happiness. Once I graduate, I intend to work and follow my dreams to fulfill my goals as a responsible designer who has a serious commitment to the people of his society.

Design has always been my passion and fixation. The earliest memory I have is sitting under the dining table and drawing the bottom of the table with crayons. “Form follows function, follows fiction, is a sentence that I often say when I try to describe my process. I believe that every thought, action and entity has to have a purpose that can be expressed verbally, mechanically and visually. I constantly push myself to create a symbiosis between these words while supporting my artistic orientation. My talent and skills have evolved through my education and provide me with the tool to continue with my goals in this competitive design world. Combined with my hard work and ethics I strive to become an established member of the society, to give back my knowledge and offer my skills to the community.

learning to ask questions Alice Rawsthorn, the New York Times’ design critic, defined the spirit of today’s design as “a quest for meaning in a dystopian era.” This existential quest, rather than pursuit of new products, will continue to define the design effort for years to come. It is not surprising that design schools come to the forefront of global design activity. Unencumbered by market considerations, academia is well suited for experimentation, creative research, and production of ideas. Strategically situated in Doha, on the crossroads of the Gulf Region, the graduate program at VCUQatar is both inspired and informed by design culture of the Gulf – a culture
in transition. The projects of our first-ever group of graduating students question some common preconceptions of their immediate environment, and attempt their own responses. In fluid conditions of contemporary cultural economy, their projects inevitably become interdisciplinary. The outcome includes communications, narrative, experimental materials, environmental and social concerns, and the work is viewed as a process rather than as a finished artifact. Together, the young graduates test grounds for new ideas and new solutions, envisioning a better future for all. Constantin Boym Director, MFA.DESIGN.

Heat-aggravated illness in Qatar is an annual hot topic. People are hospitalized daily starting as early as March and escalating in numbers during the peak months of June to August. As clothes affect the rate and efficiency with which heat is exchanged between the body and its surroundings, this thesis aims to integrate indigenous experience and clothing systems with new technologies and knowledge of human physiology to design an intuitive and efficient garment that improves the thermal comfort of physically active individuals, specifically elementary occupation workers, who experience Qatar’s high index climate while wearing generic clothing. Research incorporates an anthropological and ethnographic study as well as field observations, a multi-lingual workers’ questionnaire, experimentation with various natural and man made materials, and prototyping. The final design should mesh indigenous garment structures (loose structures, gussets, and head-to-toe body coverage) with current cooling technologies (cooling gels and phase change materials).

Green Relationship Green is not a color, it is a lifestyle design studies
THESIS TITLE
102
The government and the private sector in Qatar have taken serious actions toward the back-end of recycling in the country. Therefore my thesis will focus on the frontend of the process in relation to waste generation, consumerism, and relationship with nature. My goal is to raise awareness and provide design solutions to promote sustainable culture in Qatar, trying to change positively people’s perspectives toward waste generation and green lifestyle. So far, our relationship with the nature has never been framed in a social and personal way. By building a Green Relationship we will be committed to our silent partner, the environment. Raising awareness through creative thinking and fun will direct people towards Green Lifestyle. In a series of design installations, I want to visualize different communication styles between humans and nature, and monitor the outcome and influence of people’s behavior.

104 From Lashes to Ashes, Dust to Design Exploring the hidden dimensions of corporeal substances and residue THESIS TITLE
This thesis explores the cultural, social, ceremonial and pragmatic contexts and reuses of human hair, nails, and skin particles. Once out of their original and natural setting, the perception of these innate natural resources changes; and what once could be perceived as a sign of beauty and seduction, a reflection of ethnicity and religion, or even a canvas for self-expression, suddenly, when removed from its corporeal origins, becomes no more than unwanted waste, clippings, and dust. The objective of the thesis is to explore the fine line between concept and utility.
