NOMAD TABLE ART 351 Furniture Design Jim Nicholls
Challenged with building a table that responds to the nomadic nature of modern urban life, my design embraces the nature of the assigned material, the Douglas Fir 2 x 4. It functions as a table that integrates digital technology and as a portable storage device. End grain and side grain are used to highlight the method of construction and the nature of the material.

BIRCH PLY BEDSIDE ART 351 Furniture Design Jim Nicholls
This design embraces the distinct quality of plywood endgrain, and uses it to create a language that expresses the method of construction. The interlocking shelves provide the table with its structure.

SOIL + SITE OBSERVATORY ARCH 211 Design Drawing II Gundula Proksch
As a response to the history of soil pollution at Seattle’s Gasworks Park, this structure is integrated into a hillside so that it alternately provides views of the park and views of the layers of soil below the park’s surface. This connects visitors to the park’s troubled past and revitalized present as they weave in and out of the structure’s mass and exit into the park.

SOLAR STRUCTURE: L.A. ARCH 211 Design Drawing Gundula Proksch
The studio was assigned a location and we were tasked with designing a structure in response to the daylight conditions of our city. My design features a sequence of rooms, each responding in a different way to solstices or solar orientation at particular times of day. The ascent and descent through the structure mimics the sun’s path by increasing the solar exposure in correlation with the ascent.

Low-Density Residential
Our studio was tasked with designing a multi-use Transit Oriented Development in Northern Seattle on a 360,000 sq. ft. parking lot. As the site of a new light rail station, my scheme responded to the intersection of various modes of transportation on site by creating a landmark station that houses light rail, bus, and bike stations within. Each transportation mode has its own level, but the courtyard puncturing the levels provides visual access between modes of transport. The mezzanine level of the lightrail wraps around the building and pedestrian bridges extend into the surrounding areas. The building sits on the corner of the site, but would be the center node of spreading density and will serve as a placemaking tool for the site.
