Jan Muller Antiques A third generation of antique dealers
Born within a family of antique dealers, it’s not much of a surprise that one day Jan Muller would follow this tradition. It were his grandparents, Julia and George Muller who initially started a little art shop in Lokeren. Spiced with ambition and hard work, it soon became a big success. They participated in the most important antique fairs of Flanders 1 establishing themselves a reputation within the art scene. His grandmother developed a passion for Delftware. 2 Jan's father, Lambert Muller, shared his parents passion for antiques and founded his own business in an old elementary school located in Lokeren-Zeveneken. Together with his wife, Monique, Lambert, for 17 years, worked seven days a week combining antiques with a job as a medical worker. During this time an incredible amount of antique furniture passed though their workshop. Even grandfather Theofiel 4 and ‘meme’ both helped
to keep up with the work. In this period lots of rare pieces found their way to collectors. A favourite part of their merchandise was Dutch delftware. An old family tradition. Many antique fairs were to follow 5 and Zeveneken became a popular meeting place for passionate antique collectors. Being the youngest of three children 3 it was Jan who, at a very early age, seemed to develop an interest in his parents profession. 6-7 After having obtained his degree in art science at the university of Ghent, he gradually participated in the family business, thus adding practice to knowledge. Under the supervision of his parents he soon matured and when a new location offered itself, he relocated his trade to Ghent. This is where he resides today with Nina and their two children. His new gallery in the Burgstraat 24 houses a fine collection of both paintings, sculptures and delftware.

Frans Pourbus the Younger was only 12 when his father died, he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1591. In 1599 he was appointed court painter to the governors in Brussels. In 1600 Pourbus already had to leave Brussels when Vincent I Gonzaga called him to Mantua to be his court painter. The present painting must therefore have been executed between 1599, when the Prince received the Order of the Golden Fleece, and 1600, when Pourbus departed for Mantua. Prins Philip William of Orange was the son of William the Silent and Anna of Egmont. He was brought to Spain in 1568 as a hostage. He studied in spain and became a loyal friend of the Spanish king. After the murder of his father in 1584, his brother Maurice of Orange was appointed governor of the Netherlands instead of him, this causing considerable tensions between the two brothers. The prince only returned to the Netherlands in 1596. He died in 1618, leaving behind no heirs from his marriage to Eléonore de Bourbon-Condé.
