•SPACE FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY ENHANCEMENT (M. Arch thesis + Social and Environmental Justice Certification) Ball State University, Muncie, IN has about 30% of diversity on campus. A multi-cultural center has been proposed on the East Lawn of Ball State’s campus. The Office of Institutional Diversity (OID), the Multi-cultural Center and the Rinker Center for International Programs have several activities and programs encouraging cultural awareness and inclusive diversity. The thesis focused on enhancing the scope of these programs and activities by providing a wider and more centralized platform for students to experience cultural diversity, gain cultural knowledge, and share their experiences of cultural competence in a natural and unforced way.
Site Analysis Diagram + Concept GenerationAfter studying the student movement from multiple buildings on the East lawn for four months, the pathways are converted as walkways for natural and unforced understanding of cultures. Dividing the sequence into three parts - cultural awareness, cultural understanding and cultural competence (multi-cultural center). Analyzing the geometry of an inclusive and edged hexagon shape, sub-dividing the shape into smaller geometric shapes to form spaces.
