Welcome to
VegfestUK Brighton one of Europe’s biggest vegan events A big welcome to VegfestUK Brighton as this annual vegan lifestyle show celebrates its 6th year of existence! As one of Europe’s biggest and best veggie and vegan festivals, this event showcases the very best of a 100% plant-based lifestyle in a friendly, informal, fun atmosphere. Definitely not to be missed are 135 stalls packed with awesome vegan products, interesting global cuisines, free samples and special discounts. There’re also dozens of talks, cookery demos, workshops, short films, and lots of live entertainment including comedy hours and music. There’re also a speed-dating session and a bodybuilding competition on Saturday, followed by Family Day on Sunday with kids activities popular with all ages. We’re hugely honoured to have on board some very special guests, including ex-Everton FC player Neil Robinson (the world’s 1st vegan footballer), Goldblade frontman John Robb, raw food coach Saskia Fraser (Raw Freedom), Amico Bio head chef Pasquale Amico, kids entertainer Captain James Tea Cook and Harley St nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston amongst many interesting speakers and performers. Plus, VegfestUK are giving the Animal Welfare Party our full support at Brighton, in their attempt to win a seat in the EU Parliament at May’s 2014 EU Elections. You could find out more about their progress at the talk on Saturday given by party leader Vanessa Hudson, and participate at the AWP auction hosted by John Robb and their party conference workshop on Sunday. You could then contribute massively to their success by donating to them at the gate, voting for them, or just spreading the message.
VegfestUK is running a fundraising tombola for Vegfam. Vegfam feeds the world’s hungry without animal exploitation and is therefore an excellent choice of charity for vegans. From the 7 shows that we have organised since 2011, we have raised a grand total of £6,903 for Vegfam. With another 3 shows in 2014, we aim to raise even more funds for these guys who have worked incredibly hard to provide the world’s poorest with mankind’s basic need – vegan food. You can support Vegfam by donating at our Tombola and Goody Bags at stall no. 2 – see floor plan on page 25. More on Vegfam at vegfamcharity.org.uk
Many thanks must go to our innumerable list of supporters over the years – from our small hardworking team, our loyal sponsors, stallholders and media partners, down to our dedicated security team, generous stewards, welcoming venue hosts, together with many others that have contributed to our success for the past decade.

That’s not happening at the moment and we’re determined to change it.

To date AWP is run entirely by volunteers of which there are many. Often we’re working with limited resources so any help in terms of time or donations is a huge one. This is movement with little money but lots of passion, which we’re aiming to harness to make this movement an unbeatable force.
When was the AWP set up and what are its aims?

We’re standing in the London constituency at least, more constituencies if funds allow. London is our target constituency because of the high proportion of vegetarian and vegans there – a group highly likely to support our policies. There are approximately over 500,000 vegetarians in the London electorate and we need just 140,000 votes to win a seat. The challenge is in spreading the word as far wide as we can and in combating voter apathy, particularly making sure younger people vote.
What would success in the EU Elections mean? Our party is part of a Pan-European movement that includes the animal parties of the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Portugal – we’re all attempting to return dedicated representatives for animals to the EU Parliament for the first time in history. This is a moment in time as crucial as any in the history of human rights or women’s rights. Our election success will send a message to the rest of the world that man’s relationship with animals is changing, that we are re-defining who we are and what we believe in. This is about writing a new chapter in the history of humankind and, we believe, no other party’s offering gives the electorate the same possibility of making such a statement to the world.

Ruth Hawe
Ben Godwin
Ruth has been a vegan activist for over 40 years. Her outreach is linked to ecological, humanitarian and peace initiatives as only united shall we transcend our world’s problems. Her novel “Holy Cow”, launching at VegfestUK Brighton, is an attempt to penetrate the armour of public resistance to necessary change in eating habits. It is intentionally seeded with core principles and visionary inspiration within the entertaining storyline. vegantopia.co.uk
Proud owner of a voice three sizes too big for his skinny, bespectacled frame, Ben Godwin writes songs that owe as much to Allen Ginsberg and Terry Gilliam as they do to more obvious influences like Tom Waits and Nick Cave. A veteran of New York’s oddball Antifolk scene, his debut album ‘Skin and Bone’ was memorably described as sounding ‘like an evil clown dancing on a broken piano’. Raw, passionate, theatrical and whimsical by turns, Godwin’s songs are a ragged cabaret stagger down some forgotten looking-glass Broadway. bengodwin.bandcamp.com
Charlie Leavy
John Robb
At 17, Charlie has been writing & singing her own songs for the last couple of years. She mostly writes with her Martin and occasionally plays in a band as the bassist/lead vocals. Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music: “Out there in Streaming Land there are naturally gifted singers and then there are the rest of us, and you can tell within seconds that Charlie Leavy belongs effortlessly in the first category. In the coming years she’ll be able to pick pretty much any direction she wants to and, with enough hard work, make a success of it.” soundcloud.com/charlieleavymusic youtube.com/watch?v=ApplsRWytz0 twitter.com/charliemusic96 facebook.com/charlieleavymusic
John Robb is the award winning indie music mainstay, frontman of punk rock band Goldblade, music author of best selling books including “the Stone Roses And The Resurrection Of British Pop and Punk Rock - An Oral History”. Journalist, TV presenter, regular TV and radio pundit as well the boss of one of the UK’s top 5 music culture website louderthanwar.com, John was the first person to interview Nirvana and the Stone Roses and invented the term Britpop. Juliet Gellatley (Viva!) - Why You Don’t Need Dairy
We live today in a sea of chemicals and have around 300 in our bodies that shouldn’t be there. Andre Menache, director of consumer protection organisation Antidote Europe, will provide simple tips to avoid these chemicals.

Plant-based nutrition vs Animal-based nutrition Many people think that eating solely plant-based foods is not healthy and are still convinced that meat, dairy, fish and eggs are a necessary part of our diet. But as this EVOLVE! film production shows, by eating a variety of plant-based foods, it’s easy to get all the nutrients we require, with the added bonus that plant-based foods contain no saturated animal fat, no cholesterol and none of the acidifying effects of animal derived foods. evolvecampaigns.org.uk/evolve/videos.aspx
Why vegan?
The True Cost of Food
This short video by EVOLVE! outlines the rationale behind following a vegan lifestyle – justice for animals, justice for global food production, better health, putting a stop to violence and environmental destruction amongst other incentives. evolvecampaigns.org.uk/evolve/videos.aspx

shows that Londoners are taking matters into their own hands - from city farms to roof gardens, farmers’ markets to food cooperatives - providing an alternative for a more sustainable, ecological and socially just food system. bestbeforedocumentary.com
What We can Do to End World Hunger This EVOLVE! video explains that meat-eating societies are the main cause of world hunger because they feed a disproportionate percentage of the world’s crops to the 60 billion land animals annually killed by the meat, dairy and egg industries worldwide, and tens of billions of marine animals... instead of the 7 billion people on the planet. evolvecampaigns.org.uk/evolve/videos.aspx

De Haas in Der Marathon (‘the Pacer in the Marathon’) The Party for the Animals in the Netherlands represents a new political movement that values animal welfare and the environment. “The foundation of the party in October 2002 was received with scepticism within traditional politics. However, it quickly appeared to function as ‘a pacer in the marathon’ ”, recalls Marianne Thieme - co-founder and party leader. This film provides an insight into the public reception of this pioneering political movement, within science, politics and media. dehaasindemarathon.nl/en

Fry’s
Fry’s are truly an inspiration to mankind. Based in South Africa, they produce some of the world’s best vegan meat products that are irresistible not only to veggies, vegans and meat reducers, but even the most hardcore carnivores – who after every bite are left bemused as to why they didn’t give vegan foods a chance before. Not to be missed is their sublime chicken burger, a massive favourite in the nation and particularly the VegfestUK office. It won the VegfestUK 2011 award in the ‘Best Vegan Meat’ category. Its texture and flavour are so incredibly similar to the real thing, that it’s tempting to think that we’re actually biting into real chicken. And it truly puts their meat-based chicken counterparts to shame – both in terms of taste and ethics.
Thanks to the phenomenal work of Pat and Lisa Drummy from Fry’s Distribution UK, Fry’s products are now widely available across our nation. They can be found in Ocado and numerous independent health shops as well as Holland and Barrett stores. Fry’s UK distribution now reaches the 3663 chain, which means that virtually no one has to miss out, not even the kids in schools or those working in hospitals, prisons and universities. Just go and demand that your workplace stocks these amazing gems!
Also topping many vegan meat charts are their innumerable varieties of meat-free steaks, pies, sausages, rolls, schnitzels, nuggets, and many other sumptuous creations. Their Pepper and Steak Pie in particular has won over numerous discerning taste buds and scooped last year’s VegfestUK award in the ‘Best veggie meat product’ category.
The support that we have received from these guys cannot be understated. Since our shows began 11 years ago, Fry’s UK have given us extremely loyal and generous backing, even during the not so good times. Our shows would never have taken off the way they have now without Fry’s behind us. So all our heartfelt gratitude must go to this tremendous brand and also to Pat and Lisa. frysvegetarian.co.uk

Magpie
Magpie are a London based studio who design and manufacture homewares and gifts, all with a distinctly British edge. Just like their namesake bird, the Magpie, they are inveterate hoarders and love to have their collections displayed around them. Vegan owned, their love of nature extends to their methods of manufacture. All their products are vegan-friendly; they do not manufacture using any animal products, whether that’s leather or bone china. For them, it is incredibly important to know that no animal has suffered or been killed to produce one of their products. So their ceramics are all made from Porcelain which uses a mixture of 3 clays, kaolin, quartz, and feldspar. They do not use Bone China which is made from 50% animal bone, burnt and then ground up and mixed with the clay. All their bags and purses are made from animal friendly cotton, pleather and polypropylene. All their cards and notebooks are made from 100% recycled paper. Their products are all listed and carry the Vegan Society logo. They also donate 15% of every sale to their favoured charity ‘The Cats Protection’. Because of their contributions, tens of thousands of cats have been fed, cared for and hopefully re-homed with loving families. magpieline.com facebook.com/magpieline
