Editors Note Robin Ritchie, Editor Owned by Rokee, Passion (shown) & Maya Summer is behind, temperatures have fallen, and with our new magazine venture, we have met so many new doggie friends and our circle is getting larger. In this issue enjoy the pages of wet dogs shaking off the last splashes of pool play, racing wieners, and spooky canines decked in their Halloween costumes. My “Ruferees enjoyed strutting their stuff and being introduced to new surroundings, restaurants, trails, and especially treats that accompany places we go. Over the next few weeks, blessings will be said, families will gather, and children both human and doggie alike will be waiting for holiday festivities to begin. Vegas unLeashed would like to invite you to partake in the holidays, attend an event, donate your time to a rescue organization, or treat your dog to some homemade goodies. However you spend the Holidays, we send our readers the warmest Holiday Greetings.

Chris Card, Co-Editor Owned by Nash, Nick (shown) & Jet Wow! Issue number two already!! Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday I was making summer dog treats for the magazine. I hope everyone had a safe and fun summer with the fur kids. My pups and I were extremely busy and now that fall and winter are upon us, we will be staying home (not traveling as much) and competing locally. Be sure to check out this issue for all of the grrreat events that the many dog groups will be hosting. So please enjoy the second issue of Vegas Unleashed. And, remember, keep four on the floor!

Dog Heros

Me and You and a Dog Named Bo

I

Story & Photo By Melissa Mahoney

had often thought about adoption before but there was always an excuse. You know, the usual suspects: “I don’t have time.” or “What if he’s crazy?!” But still, the yearning was there. I guess I wanted to be someone’s savior. Then it happened. It was a Tuesday and in Las Vegas, that means the weekly “Adopt Me” section of the newspaper complete with story and picture. After reading that section, my husband jokingly said that our future Chihuahua was at the SPCA. After my, “Yeah, right. Haha.” I glanced at the photos and stopped when I saw that particular Chihuahua. His name was “Hootie”. He was a cute, puppy-mill rescue. His tongue just lolled out to the side but it was his eyes that captured me. They were these large, sparkly but empty Chihuahua eyes. They held this blank stare and my heart broke a little bit looking into them. I folded the newspaper back up and put it aside quickly laughing to myself, just a little. Crazy me with all that I had going on in my busy life…I didn’t have time to care for a new dog. Especially one like him. One who surely needed lots of extra care and had his own set of special needs. Sigh. The next three days went by excruciatingly slowly. Finally, I jumped out of bed and quickly dialed the shelter’s number. “Was Hootie still available?” Thoughts racing through my head, of course I knew they would tell me he was gone and I was off the hook. “Yes, I’m still here. Oh, he’s still available? Ok, thank you.” Hmmmm. Driving a little too fast with Lucy, our “alpha dog” in the passenger seat, we were on our way to get my new boy.

Boo, Chihuahua with Heart 8

Upon our arrival, I quickly got Lucy, and into the NSPCA we went. I told the gentleman in the entry area that I wished to see “Hootie”. One of the other volunteers was listening to our brief exchange giving a silent once-over. Once the gentleman left to retrieve Hootie, the lady who was listening cautiously approached us. She asked some sensible questions about our experience with rescues--particularly puppy mill rescues. She asked about our household and was very happy to find we did have other dogs and thought to bring our alpha with us for this all-important meeting. She smiled then and said she thought Hootie would do quite well with us.

I looked at my hands and was surprised to find them slightly unsteady. Guess I was a little anxious…This whole experience was new to me. Looking up, Hootie was on his way over with the lady volunteer that I had just spoken to. He was nervous but looked so sweet. He DID relax a little when he met our Lucy. As soon as it was my turn to hold him, he tensed up in terror. His whole body went rigid in an awkward and exaggerated pose. There was no going back now. Papers signed, counseling session finished and off we went!

Some 3 years have passed since that day and things have changed a little around my house. For one thing, the name Hootie somehow morphed into his permanent name, “Boo Boo”. And his eyes…still as dark and sparkly as ever but now filled with love and affection for his family. Funny thing, though, my quest to be someone’s savior didn’t turn out quite the way I thought it would. I’m not sure I was aware of all the things I was lacking not so long ago….patience, gratitude and even affection. Make time for those we love. And always greet each other with the excitement of a Chihuahua who has discovered joy in having his own special family.

A beautiful day to be on the back of a bike, and the Vegas Shepherd Rescue was there to cater to bikers who participated in the Whiskers & Tails Twilight Motorcycle Raffle Run. The event, held in September benefited the VSR, as well as All Fur Love Animal Society.

Riders were happy to

HOT DIGGITY DOG A

perfect sunny Saturday, and little legs of Dachshunds from across the Vegas Valley made their way into the Kellogg-Zaher Sports Complex, for the 9th Annual Hallo-Wiener sponsored by the Las Vegas Hot-Diggity Dachshund Club. The long bodied pups were dressed in their Halloween finest sure to bring smiles as they romped through the grass looking for fellow Doxies to play with. By mid-morning, Dachshunds were geared up for the anticipated event of the year, the Dachshunds Races. With bellies that reached the ground, these fierce little canines were ready to demonstrate the speed and agility of which their little legs could run. Participants warmed up their pooches, and spectators lined the ring to watch and cheer. “On Your Mark, Get Set. Go…., ” these speed demons raced down the track, to the calls and yells of their owners. Heat after heat and the race narrowed and the competition grew. But in the end, all Doxies were loved by their families and crowd. After the races, guests were treated to a costume contest, and eagerly awaited to discover their luck in raffle prizes, donated by local vendors.

We are an all volunteer, 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of homeless Labs. These dogs are considered among the top choices for service and therapy work. There are two types of Labradors, English and American, each with specific appearance. The three varieties of colors, include black, yellow or chocolate. Needing minimum grooming, the short haired double coat of the Labrador would benefit daily brushing which makes a great time for bonding with this loveable breed. They love to play, especially in water, never wanting to pass up the opportunity for a good swim. These lively dogs have an excellent and reliable tempermant, making the Labrador an excellent breed for families with children.

ven though Labrador Retreivers are one of the most popular breeds, many end up homeless. This is mostly due to “Labrador Retrievers improper or not are affectionate, loving, enough training and patient, making on the part of great family dogs. the owner, but the foreclosure crisis in Southern Nevada has also been a factor. Many people cannot afford to feed

or care for their Labs anymore, or they have lost their home and have to move to a place that does not accept dogs. arming the laps of nobility, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s namesake is King Charles II of Britain. The soulful eyes of this gentle lap companion has found his way into many hearts, including, Britain’s royalty, who slept with the dogs in their bed, sparing their masters from insect ridden diseases, including the plague. Sporting in nature, but classified a Toy breed, the Cavalier was never bred to be anything other than a small, beloved gentle pet. Weighing up to 18 lbs, this agreeable breed is a lap dog to be sure, but this breed is also sporting in nature and would be happy to enjoy a day’s activities alongside his family outdoors. The breed standard recognizes four colors—Blenheim (rich chestnut and white), Ruby, Black & Tan, and Tricolor (black & white with tan points.) One of the physical trademarks of the breed is his ‘royal’ appearance, with large dark soulful eyes and glamorous feathering and coat which is easily maintained with bathing and brushing. Unlike many spaniels, this dog’s tail is not docked. The ears are floppy and may require special attention. The Cavalier is gentle, friendly, and non-aggressive with either dogs or man. Easy to train, this breed is great for sports such as therapy, agility, tracking, and obedience. If you are a fan of kissing and cute faces, this little dog has what you need. A wonderful addition to any family, this love sponge could steal your heart.

The double layer coat is curly and thick, with a coarse outer coat which sheds debris while tunneling. The Westie is an active breed and is typically good with children, although they will not tolerate rough handling. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

NOVA SCOTIA DUCK TOLLING RETRIEVER

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is called a “Toller” for short. Thought to be brought to Nova Scotia from early European settlers, the Toller is the smallest of the retrievers. There is no authentic record of the breed; however, the Toller is thought to have basic stock of a red decoy dog crossed with other breeds, possibly spaniel and setter-type dogs, retriever-type dogs, and farm collie. The Toller’s unusual job is to toll (lure) for fowl in water. From a concealed blind near the shore, the hunter tosses a stick parallel to the shore. With great enthusiasm, the Toller retrieves the stick but without barking. The curiosity of the waterfowl as they watch the appearance and disappearance of the red dog’s playful actions along the shore causes them to swim in close to observe the dog more closely. When the overly inquisitive ducks are within shooting range, the hunter calls the Toller back to the blind and causes the ducks to take flight. The hunter then shoots, and the Toller retrieves the game back to the hunter. The height standard of the breed can range from 17 to 21 inches, and reach 40 to 55 lbs. in weight. Due to its golden-red color, people confuse the breed and think the Toller is a small Golden Retriever with the feathering on the legs, chest, and tail. The Toller has usually at least one of the following white markings on the tip of tail, feet, chest, and blaze. This breed is extremely active, both mentally and physically, so be on your toes if you choose to bring the Toller home.

In 1931, the Rottweiler or “Rottie” was placed into the working group of the American Kennel Club. Known as the “Rottweil Butcher’s Dog” so titled for the city in Germany, this breed was developed from droving dogs, and was used to pull food supply carts for travelling Roman legions. During the Middle Ages, the dog was used to pull carts full of meat while escorting the butcher and his money to the bank. Money pouches were tied around the necks of the massive dogs in the hopes of discouraging potential robbers.

The Rottweiler is among the oldest of herding breeds. In America they are rarely used for such purpose and are more often used for guard duties and as police dogs. Because this is an intelligent dog, the Rottie is easily trained. However, due to its power and strength, this dog requires positive training and will need to know its place within the family dynamic. This means that the Rottie will require an enormous amount of time to train at a very early stage in the dog’s life. The Rottie’s markings are natural and rustic. The lips are always black as well as their coat with brown markings around the mouth, shoulders, paws and, of course, their cute circular brown eyebrows. Standing at up to 27 inches, this breed can reach a massive 132 lbs. Exceling in all activities, these dogs are bred to work, guard, and please.

HARMFUL FOODS The Holidays are soon approaching, and your dog could be exposed to dangerous foods more than what is usual. Keep your pup out of harms way by understanding that what is good for human consumption is not good for Fido. Follow good sense when giving your dog a special treat.

Onions and Garlic Onions and garlic in all forms including powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anemia.

Fat Trimmings & Bones Fat trimmed from meat can cause pancreatitis in dogs. It seems natural to give a dog a bone, but a dog can choke on it, splinter and cause an obstruction or lacerations of your dog’s digestive system.

Grapes & Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. And just a small amount can make a dog ill.

Vicki, the chairperson, accompanied by her two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, was there introducing visitors to trainers and clubs available in the Valley. People and their dogs tried their hand (paw) at Rally courses, and spectators were captivated by demonstrations from the local K9 Unit. Visitors strolled the plaza, meeting different breeds of dogs. Schnauzers, Poodles, Chows, and Dachshunds were wagging their tails, enjoying pats on the head, and the attention from everyone passing by.

The eatery features Italian and Mediterranean dishes, along with several seafood dishes with prices ranging from $15 to $30. Our four-legged companions were happy to stretch out while we ordered a glass of fruity Sangria to sip, and munched on a loaf of crusty bread. We started with the lightly battered fried calamari served with a spicy marinara sauce, then decided among a cheesy pizza, fresh salad, or the delicious blackened salmon.

TREAT RECIPES

For the Naughty and Nice Holidays festivities are quickly approaching and your dog should partake in the feasts of the festivities too. All too often we make holiday cookies and goodies for our families and tend to forget Fido. Baking for your dog is a way to remember your Best Friend, and these dog holiday baking recipes are healthy homemade treats that our furry companions love to gobble. Using different cookie cutter shapes and doggie icings add a great holiday touch. But remember, when baking for your dog, do not use chocolate as it is toxic. A safe alternative for the barking chocoholic is carob found in the baking aisle of you local store. Holiday dog cookies make great gifts for the neighborhood dogs and for dogs in the family. Whether your pooch is naughty or nice, they will surely enjoy these special canine goodies.

The Dog Sport of Tracking

The Nose Knows

dog’s nose is their primary resource for knowing what is going on around them – more so than their eyes or ears. The canine’s nose is a thousand times more receptive to picking up odors and identifying smells than ours. For example, while you and I are able to smell the apples and cinnamon within a freshly-baked pie, your dog’s far-superior nose can separately identify the salt, sugar, and even flour.

Competition K9s THREE PHASES OF TRACKING

Searching Phase This is the phase in which dogs attempt to find a track. They move quickly, and take short, quick sniffs.

Deciding Phase Once the dog has found the track, they move more slowly and take longer sniffs to determine the direction of the track. This is usually the most difficult phase for the dog.

Tracking Phase After determining the direction, dogs follow the track by sniffing at a uniform pace, and moving at a speed similar to that of the searching.

52

VEGASUNLEASHED

W

hen teaching your dog to track, you put to use this natural talent by having the dog follow a scent of your choosing; that of a fellow human tracklayer. The tracklayer leaves an article with his/her scent at the start of the track, typically a handkerchief, then steps off, walking a distance of 440-500 yards. The tracks can cover four to five football fields. The tracklayer makes a selection of 3-5 right and left turns while laying the track, then drops the leather glove at the completion of the track.

T

racking is typically done in a grass field, however in Vegas, soccer parks or desert are more commonly used. Up to two hours later, the handler and dog walk up to the start line with the dog wearing a harness, attached to a 40-foot lead. The dog picks up the scent to be followed by the article left by the tracklayer, then proceeds to show the handler which direction the track goes by tightening the line and leading the handler down the path previously traveled.

T

here are no other indications as where the track goes, turns, or ends except for the handler watching the reactions of his dog. While tracking, the dog typically will keep the

Jacobsen Cookies-N-Cream (Oreo)

line taunt while “on track”, then pulls up and circles when it finds a corner where the track takes off in a different direction. The dog will search that area “Primarily, dogs use their until certain what sense of smell, to find and new direction the follow a track.” track now goes, then proceeds down the second leg of the track. The process continues for each turn encountered until the dog finds the ultimate prize, the GLOVE!!

T

he American Kennel Club offers 3 tests in tracking where titles may be earned. TheTracking Dog (TD) is the first title earned having successfully completed a “blind” track where the dog leads its handler from the start article to the glove without any indication of where the track goes (hence the track is “blind” to the handler).

T

he Tracking Dog Excellent (TDX) title expands upon this training by having the dog complete a track that is 800 to 1000 yards in length and has aged between 3 to 5 hours, with 5 to 7 turns. Additionally, crosstracks are laid over top the original tracklayer’s path, thus the dog has the added challenge of staying true to following the scent of the original tracklayer and not being led astray.

W

hile the TD and TDX tests are held on vegetated surfaces (like grass fields), the Variable Surface Tracking (VST) title is earned by completing a track where a mixture of vegetated and “hard” surfaces exist, like at a college campus. The dog follows the scent of a tracklayer as he/she walks thru grass, concrete, asphalt, rocks, dirt, etc. The track is 600 to 800 yards in length and has aged 3 to 5 hours. If the handler/dog achieve all three titles (TD, TDX, VST) then the Champion Tracker (CT) title is awarded. Additional information on dog tracking as a sport and the different tests offered by the American Kennel Club, may be found online at www. akc.org/dog_shows_trials/tracking/index.cfm

Four courses were set and a total of 143 runs completed. Our local AKC Agility Field Representative, Steve Herwig, was conveniently on hand to unofficially judge the event. Follow the Course AKC RALLY

Article Written by Chris Card

Hi All! As you read in the last issue AKC Rally is not only fun but it allows you to train Fido and compete in AKC Sanctioned events. So in this article I will be describing some of the most commonly used signs. But first and foremost, when competing in Rally, signs are always read from the handlers right. So lets get started with a sign that looks like this:

HALT – Down Dog

While heeling the handler halts, and the dog sits. The handler then commands and/or signals the dog to down, followed by the command to heel forward from the down position. NOTE: Any time you see a HALT sign the dog always sits.

Right Turn Left Turn

These signs are fairly self explanatory – with the dog in the heel position perform a 90° turn to the right or a 90° turn to the left and head to the next station.

Look at that, you have just mastered 3 AKC Rally signs. So roll Fido off the couch and start practicing! 58

DOG PARK ETIQUETTE WWW.DOGPARK.COM

Dog parks aren’t a right, they’re a privilege. – please don’t let bad behavior ruin things for everyone else.

DO Always clean up after your dog. Most parks have poopbags, so use them. Make sure your dog is current on shots. Keep your dog on-leash until you get to the offleash area. This is not just respectful to other park users, it’s much safer for your dog. Close all doors to the dog park or dog run after entering or exiting. Supervice children closely. Always observe all of the rules posted at your local dog park.

62

VEGASUNLEASHED

DON’T Don’t leave your dog unattended. Don’t bring dogs younger than 4 months to a dog park. They won’t have had all the necessary inoculations that allow them to play safely with other animals. Don’t bring a female dog in season if not spayed. Don’t bring more than two or maybe three dogs, it’s hard enough for many people to watch one dog! Don’t let your dog play rough, if this happens leash him and leave immediately. Don’t smoke or eat while at the dog park. Cigarette butts and food wrappers are tempting treats to dogs.

Historic Railroad Tunnel

Tunnels In Time Story Robin Ritchie | Photography Mike Coers

Rich in history, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area beckons hikers and their dogs to explore an easy paced trail alongside extensive lake views, multihued geology, and cavernous railroad tunnels of the Historic Railroad Tunnels Trail.

T

The historic “Railroad Tunnels“ trailhead begins near the Visitor Center, just off of Highway 93. Our group of explorers opted for an evening hike, amid inviting sunsets and golden deserts. With Rokee, Passion, and Bert as our companions, we started our 4.4 mile journey from the west side of the parking lot. The dogs picked up the trail passing two large information signs and headed west along an old road once used by the Six Companies for hauling equipment and running

gravel to and from the dam site. As the sun started is descent, we pass through a large gate starting the hike with hints of golden volcanic ash rocks.

F

rom the gate, the trail runs along the roadbed for about one mile. Rounding a bend we are met with the massive first tunnel. A great place for pictures, the first tunnel reveals the second and gives a great perspective to the sizeable tunnels (continued on pg 67)

TAIL WAGS

THINGS TO KNOW This trail is wide, with even footing. But note that the cliffs drop steeply, watch the edges.

PHOTOS Left: 2nd Tunnel as seen thru 1st Middle: Passion, Rokee & Robin along Roadbed Right: Lake Mead in Sunset

Bring plenty of water for both human and pooch. The desert air is dry, and all need to stay hydrated. We all expect to get off trail before dark, but it doesn’t always happen. The desert can get dark, even in moonlight. Make sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries.

Tunnels are approx. 300 ft. in length, and 25 ft in diameter. The tunnels were oversized to fit penstock sections and large equipment being transported to the Hoover Dam.

The only remaining section of the Hoover Dam Railroad system that is not highly disturbed or under water. Nine steam and four gas locomotives and 71 people were used to operate the system.

needed to transport the large equipment to and from the dam. Anxious to enter, we hike through the first tunnel. Echoes of past train whistles and thunder of metal tracks can be heard. At the far end, 20 foot tall wooden timbers support the roof of the tunnel from loose and falling rocks. These timbers have been at the tunnel’s opening for over 70 years and are a tangible memory of an era known for great accomplishments.

P

ast the first tunnel, the trail continues eastward along the roadbed and passes through four more tunnels. All along the wall of the canyon, and especially between the first and second tunnels, there is an amazing amount of bright green lichen on the black volcanic rock. Approaching the second tunnel, we start to see shadows in the evening sky. Native to Southern Nevada, Little Brown Bats are in flight dipping through the air seeking an evening meal of small instects. Although the dogs want to chase the small creatures, the winged predators ignore our presence.

B Directions from Las Vegas: TRAILHEAD: This hike is located along Highway 93 in Lake Mead National Recreation Area, about 1 hour southeast of downtown Las Vegas. From town, drive out to Lake Mead. Drive south on Highway 93, through Boulder City, to Lakeshore Road. Turn left (north) onto Lakeshore Road and drive north for a few tenths of a mile to the Lake Mead (Alan Bible) Visitor Center turnoff. Pass the turnoff, drive another 0.1 miles, and turn right (southeast) into a large parking area (no fee.) Parking is limited and has a tendency to fill on weekends.

etween tunnels four and five, the sun sets behind our backs, and Lake Mead takes on hues of pink and purple. Approaching the fourth tunnel, our companions are happy to guide us through the darkness to the tunnel’s end. Here we observe the fallen arch of the deformed tunnel exit, and from the roadbed above, we peer down to the twinkling lights of the marina.

T

he final tunnel, number five, seems unusually long as we make our way through the darkness. Unlike the first four tunnels, tunnel number five curves with no opening in sight. At this point flashlights are needed to help light the path, and our companions lead the way finding the exit and the expected locked gate. Here the out-and -back trail ends for nighttime hikers, but we happily retrace our steps as the sky begins to darken, and the stars start to appear.
