The legendary rockers bring the thrash to Downtown’s metal festival
rummer Charlie Benante didn’t let something as serious as a 2013 carpal tunnel diagnosis slow him down. He simply dropped the sticks for a bit and picked up the guitar instead, writing many of the foundation riffs for songs that comprise Anthrax’s 2016 release, For All Kings, the band’s eleventh studio album. Benante’s gruff optimism comes through loud and clear when asked if he thinks Las Rageous, a two-day metal and hard rock fest taking place at Downtown Las Vegas Event Center, will be successful. “Sure, why not?” he says during a brief phone chat with Vegas Seven. “Why can’t it work in Vegas? You know, we’ve played the most remote farmlands in Holland, where all you smell is cow shit, and there’s nothing around for miles—until the day of the festival, and then there are tens of thousands of people. Vegas will be easier to pack.” Anthrax stands alone in the Las Rageous lineup (which also includes Mastodon, Godsmack and Avenged Sevenfold, among others). They’re the only thrash group and the legends. Though he claims he’s never played with any of the other slated acts before, he’s heard their music. Including, to my surprise, Vegas’ own homegrown metalcore band Escape the Fate. “Just because I haven’t toured with a band doesn’t mean they don’t exist to me,” he says, chuckling. “I’ve heard the Killers, Panic! at the Disco and Imagine Dragons, too.” Benante is full of surprises, which is

reflected in most of For All Kings’ tracks, especially the hard-charging cut “Breathing Lightning.” Did that one feel like an Anthrax classic when he presented the riff to bandmates Scott Ian (guitar) and bassist Frank Bello (Benante’s nephew)? “That was the song I was most apprehensive to show the band,” Benante admits. “It was a departure, a little more accessible than what we usually aim for. But I believed in it enough to run the risk of rejection.” He’s stoked to rock Vegas this week because “playing live onstage is about feeding off the audience reaction,” especially an exploding mosh pit. But he reveals that, at age 54, it’s become a challenge to light the same headbanging fire under songs he’s been drumming on for 30-plus years. For Benante, the Las Rageous creative aspect is April 21–22, 4 p.m., $79–$499, more enjoyable Downtown Las Vegas Events than live perforCenter, lasrageous.com mances. “I enjoy the Friday, April 21 Godsmack, process: writing Coheed and Cambria, [the song], reAnthrax, Killswitch Engage, cording it in the Of Mice & Men, The Devil studio [and] deWears Prada, We Gave It Hell, signing artwork A Friend A Foe. and T-shirts and posters. Those Saturday, April 22 Avenged are really my faSevenfold, Breaking Benjamin, vorite parts.” 7 Mastodon, Eagles of Death Metal, All That Remains, Escape the Fate, Nations, Code Red Riot.
More Metal WATCH THESE BANDS TEAR UP THE TWO-DAY LAS RAGEOUS GODSMACK Brace yourself for … a grunge-spawned rock band that has returned to its nu-metal roots—i.e., pummeling groove-riffs and melodic vocals—to much acclaim. Avoid the mosh pit when … the band tears into the title track from its most recent disc, 2014’s 1000hp. Get pumped by spinning … stomping raveup “Whatever,” one of the band’s earliest rock-radio hits and a signature cut. COHEED AND CAMBRIA Brace yourself for … blistering, lyrically ambitious, Rush-indebted prog-hardcore from the subgenre’s leading act. Avoid the mosh pit when … C&C decide to crush eardrums with the planet-wrecking “Atlas,” a six-minute tribute to frontman Claudio Sanchez’s infant son. Get pumped by spinning … “Blood Red Summer,” a tune (and video) that came on a free disc packaged with the old-school PSP (PlayStation Portable). Nostalgia, baby. [ FRIDAY-NIGHT ITINERARY ]
S
DOING DOWNTOWN
tuck for what to do on a Friday night that doesn’t involve a generic restaurant or bar? Get out of the rut with a twist on the movie date night that starts with a plant-based meal, followed by a flick in the Valley’s newest movie theater and ends at an antiques shop that doubles as a groovy bar. So park in the free parking spots after 6 p.m. on Bridger Avenue and make Downtown a one-stop destination. VegeNation (616 East Carson Ave., vegenationlv.com) is one of the most coveted spots for Downtown dining thanks to chef Donald Lemperle and his menu that lures vegans and meat eaters alike. Get there before 7 p.m. and take advantage of the two-for-one sangrias, wine and beer. Start with the Buffalo cauliflower (it sells out, so order it as soon as you sit down) and then indulge in Chicken Pot Pie Gnocchi or the Thai Curry veggie bowl. Finish up with homemade tiramisu or the oh-so-popular (and massive) brownie sundae. Take the date up a notch and catch a film at Eclipse Theaters (814 S. Third St., eclipsetheaters.com), where you won’t hear any crying babies thanks to the adults-only policy after 6 p.m. The 21-and-over venue has an on-site restaurant (with more vegan eats), a bar and a lounge whipping up cocktails, as well as VIP suites. With eight screens, you can catch the latest box-office releases (hello, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, opening May 5) and independent films. Dig on the reclining seats and call buttons for ordering, so not even a minute of dialogue is missed. Everything in ReBAR (1225 S. Main St., rebarlv.com) is for sale, including the piecemeal bar itself. This dark and cozy watering hole tucked away on Main Street has drink prices that are appealing (wine starts at $4 a glass) and a hefty selection of craft beers. Purchasing from the Charitable Cocktails list benefits local organizations including the Las Vegas Arts District and a rotating roster of animal philanthropies like Home for Spot and Bark Happy. Curl up on a couch and play some Trivial Pursuit or grab a late-night snack such as a vegan kielbasa and end your night here. 7

FLOSSTRADAMUS MOVES FORWARD AS A SOLO ACT WITH A NIGHT CLUB RESIDENCY In the early days of Flosstradamus, circa 2007, Curt Cameruci (aka Autobot) and Josh Young (aka J2K) were up-and-coming as an electronic-dance music power duo in Chicago, experimenting with house and hip-hop, throwing dance parties for the ages. Cameruci, originally from Richland, Michigan, had moved to the Windy City for college and partnered with Young, a local DJ, after mutual friends urged them to meet. Soon they were buying cheap vinyl from the record shop and fusing these genres in a way that no one was really doing in the scene at the time. “We would take Southern hip-hop drum influences and mix it with some trance kind of sounds, and that’s what made our sound,” Cameruci says. For the better part of a decade, the pair pioneered the house/trap style of music and created a legion of followers—the HDYNation (pronounced hoodie nation). Last December, Young dropped the big news that he was going out on his own. With the bromance over, Cameruci admits it’s sad because the two have a lot of great memories together, but can see why Young left and wishes him the best. “We did all the bucket list things that we both wanted to do with Floss,” he says. These included playing Lollapalooza—five times since their first appearance at the festival in 2007—and performing at Coachella and Electric Daisy Carnival. They even controversially joined the lineup for Insane Clown Posse’s Gathering of the Juggalos. Considering himself fortunate to carry on the name, Cameruci feels there’s more out there for him, like “dipping his toes in the pop world” and spending time in Atlanta making hip-hop songs. Next is continuing the movement he and Young started by bringing back HDYFest, a curated concert for Floss fans held in Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado on April 20—or 4/20 for the initiated. Around 2010 when the duo had fallen off in popularity, they started selling shirts with an HDY (Hi Def Youth) logo. That grew from clothing line to lifestyle brand. “We were just talking about living life high def, like, living in the now and being positive,” Cameruci says. The first time he performed in the outdoor venue was for a smaller show, but he got emotional on stage. “I started crying. It was crazy,” he says. Going into year three, the second at Red Rocks, it’s all about debuting a new set. Rapper Gucci Mane has recently been added to the bill as well. Tried and true classics like the remix of Major Lazer’s “Original Don” and “Don’t Trip,” featuring Sizzy Rocket and Run the Jewels, launched Flosstradamus into fame and kept them there. Now 35 and a solo act, Cameruci will be looking to friends like Waka Flocka Flame to collaborate. His new single with rapper Mayhem, featuring Waka, is appropriately titled, “Back Again.” As a regular Wynn Nightlife resident, he’ll keep delivering Floss’ high-energy vibe as well as testing the waters with some freestyle in his upcoming performances at Surrender and Encore Beach Club on April 22 and April 28, respectively. 7
