Most Likely to Succeed Rough Night is Las Vegas native Jillian Bell’s big-screen breakout By Camille Cannon
There probably isn’t a poster on the walls of UNLV that reads “Drop out— you’ll be on your way to A-list stardom.” That success story, though, is exactly what happened to rising comedic actress Jillian Bell. Since moving to Los Angeles after one semester of college, the 2002 Bishop Gorman graduate has become the Valley’s star expat. (Move over, Jenna Jameson.) Bell studied at L.A.’s comedy institution The Groundlings, wrote for one season of Saturday Night Live, lit up seven seasons of Comedy Central’s Workaholics and landed supporting roles in Hollywood films such as Goosebumps and 22 Jump Street. She’s currently launching a T-shirt line, Neon Witch, with her older sister and writing a feature film with her comedy partner Charlotte Newhouse (together they also created the hilarious Idiotsitter, now airing its second season on Comedy Central). And this summer, Bell stars alongside Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon in the bachelorette-party-turnedcrime-scene comedy Rough Night, which hits theaters June 16. Vegas Seven spoke with Bell on a rare day off to catch up on all she’s accomplished since ditching the desert. Did you have a backup plan when you left Las Vegas to pursue acting?
It’s weird, I never did. I just thought, “This is what I want to do with my life and I’m going to try for it and hopefully be able to do it.” Now that I’ve sort of made that happen, I start to think, “What are other things I could do?” [Laughs.] I love doing interior decorating. I feel like I would be a decent wedding planner, which is hysterical to say out loud—that’s so random. You were here for the grand opening of Magic Mike Live Las Vegas, created by your 22 Jump
June 15–21, 2017 vegasseven.com
Street and Idiotsitter costar, Channing Tatum. If you created your own Las Vegas show, what would it look like?
I don’t know if this is something people would want to go to. [Laughs.] I would want to do something like Clue: The Musical, because [Clue] is my favorite movie. I would want it to be something dark, funny and twisted. Speaking of dark, funny and twisted, let’s talk about Rough Night.
Now you see why I wanted to do the movie so badly! [Laughs.] I read the script and I was like, “This is right up my alley.” And you’re on the poster!
It still completely blows my mind. I’m like, “Oh, this must be an accident. Someone accidentally put me up there next to Scarlett Johansson!” I’m very grateful. From the looks of the trailer, you play the most pivotal role. There would be no dead stripper without your character.
[Laughs.] If my character was not so horny, there probably would not be as crazy of a plot to this movie. You’re right about that! But a lot of things go down; we each play a part getting us into the pickle that we’re in. Any standout improvised moments on the set?
There’s a scene where a pizza delivery guy arrives and Kate McKinnon has to run to the door to see who it is. All she has to say is, “It’s pizza.” She’s doing this crazy, exaggerated accent and she kept saying, “It’s peet-zer!” We couldn’t stop laughing. I think we broke every single take. Were there memorable characters
that you wrote for during your season at Saturday Night Live?
I wrote a lot with Kristen Wiig and we had a lot of fun, but I didn’t get a ton on the air. I felt like I held back a little bit because I always wanted to be on the show. I was not willing to give up some of the material that I used at The Groundlings because I wanted to see if I would ever have the opportunity to do it. I didn’t, but at the time I did what [I] felt [was] the right decision in my heart, which was to hang on to certain things that I created, [characters] that felt like they were a part of me. I know that may sound silly, but it was something that felt right, at least at the beginning of my career. I still do it now. I go with my gut. I found a clip of you and your writing partner Charlotte Newhouse on Larry King Now.
Oh, my gosh! It’s the greatest interview of all time. He gets very intimate with both of us.
If you could ask a male celebrity any question, who would it be and what would you ask?
You’re the first person who has ever brought that exact question to me. That is amazing. Go. Girl. Go. I would ask every male celebrity “How badly do you want to kiss me?” They would all say, “Not so much.” But it would be really fun to ask every single one and then see if it actually works. Or I would just ask “What are you wearing?” because that’s what every female gets. Hopefully every male celebrity will read this interview. And want to kiss me because of it? Yes. Ah, wouldn’t life be sweet! 7
If you like the DJs with radio play, check out these Electric Daisy Carnival acts with similar sounds

DIPLO
ABOVE & BEYOND
If uplifting trance is your thing, don’t just stop at Above & Beyond’s set—there will be plenty of trance to choose from. Aly & Fila (Sunday) are coming straight from Cairo, bringing the “Future Sound of Egypt” to Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas. Hailing from Germany, Cosmic Gate (Saturday) is another DJ duo you shouldn’t miss. The pair’s progressive beats will keep you dancing the entire set. If you like trance with a side of dubstep, make sure to catch Seven Lions (Sunday) for his unique sound and visuals.
CALVIN HARRIS
Do you dig lyrically-driven electro-pop, like what Calvin Harris serves up? French DJ Martin Solveig (Saturday) achieved mainstream success with 2011’s Smash (you no doubt heard his collaboration with Dragonette, “Hello”), so see what the electro-pop purveyor has been up to since. Oliver Heldens (Saturday) may be only 22, but the Dutch producer makes the freshest future house beats—he may not have the vocals that Harris does, but his music is catchy nonetheless. There’s also CID (Sunday), an American producer out of New York City. Teaming up with the likes of Kaskade, his music is definitely on the cutting edge of the house genre.
Traces of the innovative and eclectic sound of Diplo can be heard in these artists’ work. Hailing from Phoenix, Mija (Saturday) is one of the few female acts in the male-dominated world of electronic music. Now signed to Skrillex’s label, OWSLA, her sound is all over the map—and her sets are as genre-defying as they are fun to dance to. Another OWSLA artist taking the EDC stage is Valentino Khan (Saturday, pictured left) out of Los Angeles. Best known for his “Deep Down Low” banger, Khan brings an uptempo groove and funky drops to every set. Also, Kygo (Saturday) is bringing his brand of tropical house, and his set might just remind one of Diplo’s dancehall-infused beats. This Norwegian artist new releases with pop stars such as Ellie Goulding and Selena Gomez.
TIËSTO
You’ve seen Tiësto a million times—why not check out someone new? If shuffling is your thing, make sure you listen to Dutch DJ Don Diablo’s (Friday) “Cutting Shapes” track. As the name might suggest, Firebeatz (Sunday, pictured below) will bring its hot, big-room beats to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
THE CHAINSMOKERS
If you’re looking for something similar to what Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart are putting out, Illenium (Friday) will bring his melodic electric sound this year. Another to check out is electro-house beatslinger Ookay (Sunday), an on-the-rise DJ who has worked with talents such as Diplo and Marshmello. Galantis (Friday) is a Swedish duo with hits such as “Runaway (U & I)” and “Peanut Butter Jelly”—and if you like the Chainsmokers, they might just be your must-see EDC act.
YELLOW CLAW
Are you a fan of YC? Check out Alison Wonderland (Saturday), an Aussie DJ with a unique mix of trap and hip-hop sounds. Also, Israeli DJ Borgore (Friday) is bringing his self-described “gorestep” sound. The artist’s hard-hitting, metal-influenced trap beats are perfect to headbang to. If you’re looking for music that’s even heavier, Canadian producer Snails (Saturday). will be serving dirty bass drops with insane visuals to match.
Desert Daisy Dialogue Hakkasan Group DJs dish on past Electric Daisy Carnival week experiences On their first time playing at EDC Las Vegas ... “It was a surreal experience that I’ll never forget. It’s up there in [my] all-time favorite [shows], next to [when] I played on the Great Wall of China.” –Afrojack (June 16, EDC; June 18, 11 a.m., $20–$30, Wet Republic at MGM Grand, wetrepublic.com) “I was opening the main stage. [Due to] some trouble at the gates, I was playing for a very small crowd for the first 20 minutes of my set, which felt really weird because the area is huge. Halfway through, I saw people running toward the stage to catch the last part, which was really cool.” –Oliver Heldens (June 15, 10:30 p.m., $20–$30, Jewel Nightclub inside Aria, jewelnightclub.com; June 17, 11 a.m., $20–$30, Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria; liquidpoollv.com; June 17, EDC)
On what the oft-cited dancemusic acronym/mantra PLUR (peace, love, unity and respect) means to them ...
On what changes in their sets from the festival to club shows ... “I would imagine most residents who play regularly in Las Vegas look forward to EDC Week, because it allows us to go a bit off the beaten path. ... My set at Jewel on Wednesday will definitely be a lot more directed toward the EDC crowd, while still bringing in all the party favorites that make playing Vegas club shows so fun.” –Jauz (June 16, EDC; July 6, 10:30 p.m., $20–$30, Hakkasan Las Vegas inside MGM Grand, hakkasanlv.com) “Club shows are more intimate and I play [music that is] a bit more commercial to cater to the crowd. My sets at festivals are the complete Oliver Heldens experience.” –Heldens
“A moral code that we all agree to when entering the community of electronic music. It’s pretty simple: don’t be a dick. Help someone out if you see they need it. Don’t judge anyone, and they won’t judge you. Electronic music is so beautiful because it really does draw people from all walks of life, regardless of the color of [their] skin, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation [or] beliefs.” –Jauz
Clockwise from top left: Oliver Heldens, Jauz, Afrojack, Hardwell.
“In the club, usually, I will play the club type [of] music that fans love to hear and sing to—[tracks with] more melodic parts. At the Speedway, I will play more for the hardcore music fans ... This crowd wants something new [and] they are paying attention to the music. I like to deliver something special.” –Afrojack
On catching other artists’ sets during EDC Week ... “I love meeting up with my DJ buddies when I’m [in town] for EDC Week. It’s a prime opportunity to check out what they’re playing, but also just to catch up. Touring life means you often see people for a few short moments. During weeks like EDC, you get a better chance to hang out and see different DJs play.” –Hardwell
June 15–21, 2017 vegasseven.com
“Dance music is built on passion and unity, and PLUR summarizes that in just four letters.” –Hardwell (June 16, EDC; June 24, 10:30 p.m., $20–$30, Omnia Nightclub inside Caesars Palace, omnianightclub.com)
On whether or not they’ll debut new music during EDC Week ... “I’ve got a couple of new records right now, which I’m currently working on completing. It’s a great chance to premiere new material, so it is highly likely.” –Hardwell “I’ve been working really hard on putting together a super special set for EDC this year, most importantly because I’m focusing on trying to play as much original content in the 60 minutes that I have than any other show I’ve ever played. EDC is a great moment to really make a statement and that’s exactly what I plan on doing.” –Jauz

Counting Beats With DJ Clutch Wynn Master Class Series has experts take you to school
DJ David Clutch has a tell.
Every time he touches a turntable, you can see it in his eyes. He wants to rip into the decks like it’s Saturday night and there’s a full house in front of him. But it’s neither Saturday nor night. It’s Thursday afternoon at Surrender Nightclub inside Encore Las Vegas and Clutch is headlining the first “Spin With a Star DJ” session in Wynn Las Vegas’ Master Class series—ongoing workshops that pair participants with experts from the resort’s portfolio. Want to learn how to make the perfect drink? Sign up for a session with property mixologist Damian Cross. Want to look your best on camera? Stylist Claude Baruk will show you how to get redcarpet ready. Even Chef David Walzog is lined up to teach a grilling course in June. Today, it’s “DJ School” with the resident DJ demonstrating—among other things—how his equipment works, how he mastered the art of beat matching, and how he learned to read the crowd. It’s so much harder than it looks.
How Do You Get To Surrender Nightclub?
“It took me a year just to know how to own the mixer,” Clutch says, “And I spent five years practicing in my bedroom before I ever played in front of [people].” This is a two-hour session. None of us expect to leave here a resident DJ, but in conversations with other students it’s clear the payoff comes from making a connection with people who share a similar interest. learning the differences between house, deep house, future house and other music genres. There’s the Wynn guest who just bought his own equipment and wants a lesson from a pro. There’s even the budding local DJ Desstop, who has a gig at a nearby hookah lounge and is looking for a mentor among the city’s established artists. The workshop begins with a crash course on using the tools of the trade—Pioneer CDJ multiplayers, mixing board and laptop—before Clutch breaks for a Q&A. He clearly loves what he does, and he’s humble when talking about his experiences opening for Zedd, David Guetta, Diplo, and other Wynn headliners. One person asks if there are certain songs he can and can’t play in the opening act. Rule No. 1, Clutch responds: “You don’t want to play the headliner’s music.” That seems obvious, but the DJ has seen it happen. Some headliners are also very particular about music genres, although Clutch offers up Diplo as one who’s pretty chill about the opening act. “If I know [Diplo] is playing, I know I can get away with playing a lot of hip-hop, a lot of house music and a lot of trap music,” he says.
Taking a Turn Onstage
After taking a few more questions, Clutch can tell we’re anxious to get our hands on the decks. This is what we signed up for. Included in the class is a pair of Sol Republic Master Tracks headphones and a USB drive so all of us can record our mix. Some need more help than others. Clutch has queued up some familiar tracks to practice beat matching and transitions.
