Khalid vs. Khaled At 19, R&B singer Khalid makes the music you

might expect of someone his age. His stellar debut, American Teen, is very much what the title suggests: a journal of teenage life in 2017. On his chart-topping “Location,” he pleads for a GPS pin drop, singing “I don’t want to fall in love off of subtweets.” On “Young, Dumb & Broke,” he sings with the frankness of a high school senior with a full-ride college scholarship: “What’s fun about commitment, when we have our life to live?” What sets the Texas teen’s music apart from his contemporaries is presentation. While modern R&B favors trapped-out beats and druggy sex fantasies, Khalid’s music has a timeless glow that’s part shimmery pop and part soulful self-awareness. He’s a voice of the youth, but not exclusively for the youth. Even if you were 19 years ago, Khalid’s matter-of-fact ruminations will make you feel nostalgic for that summer of 19__, fitting in just as perfectly on a John Hughes soundtrack as they do in today’s clubs. That might be why he’s so swiftly risen to the top, snagging collaborations with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne and Calvin Harris—and why his July 22 show at Brooklyn Bowl sold out in a matter of days. Yet, despite the teen’s success, people still aren’t sure how to pronounce his name. That might be due to the ubiquity of DJ Khaled, a beloved, oft-parodied social-media celebrity who makes damn well certain everyone knows his name by shouting it on every one of his songs. In fact, in an April interview with New York’s Power 105.1 FM, Khalid (pronounced kuh-leed) said he gets called kha-led at least five times a day. “It’s something I’ve been called all my life on accident. I guess I just accepted it. When I was younger I would try to correct people, but I’m like, they’ll find out on their own,” he told host Angie Martinez. “If I keep working the way that I’m working now, there will be a separation and people will be like, ‘That is Khalid.’” Pronunciation aside, there are quite a few differences between the two media darlings. Here are the distinguishing factors.

ONE’S A SINGER, THE OTHER’S A BELOVED SOCIAL-MEDIA CELEBRITY

Khalid

Khaled

Is:

Singer-songwriter.

We’re not entirely sure what he does, aside from coming up with catchphrases, getting a bunch of rappers together for his albums and Snapchatting more than a 41-year-old should.

Best known for:

“Location,” which peaked at 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. It later got blessed with a remix featuring verses from Lil Wayne and Kehlani.

“I’m On One,” a 2011 cut that features Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne and was produced by Drizzy’s Toronto team. Khaled’s only contribution is shouting “DJ Khaled” on the song.

Social-media luck:

Got a big break when Kylie Jenner sang along to “Location” on Snapchat.

Once got stranded at night on his Jet Ski, documenting it on Snapchat. “Please never try to drive” Jet Skis at night, he tweeted.

Musical family:

Khalid’s mother was a singer. “It was almost like she had to let go of her dream ... to take care of me, and now she’s living her dream vicariously through me,” he told radio host Angie Martinez.

His 4-month-old son Asadh executive-produced his recent album, Grateful. He told Jimmy Kimmel that Asadh’s reactions to songs indicated how good they were. “Believe it or not, the poops and the throw-ups are super blessings. Those are actually the real good ones,” he said.

F

or the uninitiated, Venice Beach, California, can be easily mistaken for a grungy hippie commune. Let’s not blame the squares for this misconception, though— they probably missed the canals and just about everything else off the boardwalk that makes this beach town so, um, super rad. That description is especially true for the city’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard, thanks to its resident artists and surfers perusing the road’s niche boutiques and flavorful restaurants. But nowhere is the GQ magazine–designated “coolest block in America” best encapsulated than in its bar scene—and The Otheroom is its pinnacle. Boasting dim lighting, Shazam-worthy tunes and an ambiance suited for a low-key celeb set, Otheroom debuted its hip, understated touch in Las Vegas during a grand opening weekend from July 13 to 16. Located in The Forum Shops at Caesars adjacent to Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Snow Crab, the 3,200-square-foot lounge and patio is a long way from its original 300-square-foot outpost in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City, which opened nearly 30 years ago. NYC locations in the West Village and Tribeca followed, with the Venice space arriving more than a decade ago. On deck at the Strip location is Otheroom’s notable wine list (featuring a Bordeaux Grand Cru by the glass) and a strong selection of spirits, including its Japanese whisky experience—Hibiki and Ichiro’s, to name a few— and Macallan, owner Meddy Sahebi’s go-to. Though the NYC and L.A. bars heavily focus on wine and craft beers, this location also emphasizes a cocktail menu. A good starting point is the Deer In Headlights: Glenfiddich 15, Benedictine, lemon, lavender honey and the cocktail-elusive Lustau PX Sherry. There’s even alcohol–infused soft serve. According to Sahebi, Las Vegas’ Otheroom is the first place in the nation to have a Frostbite machine, which makes the boozy frozen treats that are primed to give the frosé trend a run for its money. “We are going for the wow factor,” Sahebi says. Expect it to be a novelty for the tourists who are likely to find their way to the Strip-side patio. Inside, Otheroom boasts industrial finishes and a rotating collection of for-sale art (works by Las Vegas-based Sam Hon are up first), making the atmosphere ideal for the pre-dinner and club crowd, as well as those looking for a latenight hangout. And with bar bites (including an off-menu item or two), free valet parking at The Forum Shops’ south entrance and not a TV in sight, the vibe is right. 7

PUBLIC CONSUMPTION A FEW SIPS FROM THE BEVERAGE PROGRAM AT ROBERT IRVINE’S PUBLIC HOUSE By BOB BARNES

LAST MAY, celebrity chef Robert Irvine drew attention to his announcement of plans for a dining concept at the Tropicana when he rappelled 22 stories down the side of the resort. Now, a year later, the Food Network TV star and host of the syndicated talk show The Robert Irvine Show opens his first Las Vegas restaurant, Robert Irvine’s Public House, on July 27. The 275-seat space, situated on the northern side of Tropicana’s casino floor, offers a varied beverage program. As the eatery’s motto is “There is no greater happiness than a full pint and a full plate,” it should come as no surprise that beer is a star, with 32 taps and 30 cans and bottles offered. The selection includes brews that are not the usual suspects on the Strip, such as Prairie BOMB Imperial Stout, Evil Twin Old Fashioned Lemonade IPA, Unibroue La Fin du Monde and Mikkeller Beer Geek Dessert. Local beers are not left out, with the likes of Able Baker Brewing IPA and Chris Kael Impale’d Ale, as well as Tenaya Creek 702 Pale Ale, Hauling Oats Oatmeal Stout and Bonanza Brown Ale. More than a dozen signature cocktails are available, and as Patrón is Irvine’s spirit of choice, you’ll likely be enjoying El Karma— Patrón Reposado, Mixwell Mojave Grapefruit Soda, lime wedges, grapefruit peel and chili aleppo salt. The restaurant also has a namesake cocktail, the P.H.T. (Public House Tonic), a concoction with Plymouth Gin, Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic, a cucumber strip, lemon and lime wheels and fresh mint. Irvine emphasizes that all of the libations are made with fresh fruit and vegetables. Several cocktails use beet or carrot vodka from Boardroom Spirits—“a line of vodkas, gin, Scotch and bourbon—and we’ll be using all of them,” he says. Irvine is a partner in the company. Oenophiles have options of red, white and sparkling, with an emphasis on California and Pacific Northwest wineries, along with selections from Italy, New Zealand and France. Brand highlights include Eroica Riesling, Whispering Angel Rosé, Argyle Pinot Noir, Stags’ Leap Artemis Cabernet and Mt. Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc. “We have something for everyone and a lot of drinks you won’t find anywhere else,” Irvine says. “I want people to get out of their comfort zones and try something different. And you’ll be able to enjoy a good drink and a good meal and not have to spend your mortgage.” 7
