Best of

Both Worlds Welcome to the first issue

of the American edition of Veltec Magazine. We’ve published the magazine in Europe for years, and given that our roots are planted firmly on both sides of the ocean, we decided it was time to do so here as well. Cycling is rapidly becoming the sport of choice in the U.S. Lance and LeMond may not agree about a lot of things, but each lifted the sport to a new level of enthusiasm among Americans during their respective eras. Some speculated that this enthusiasm would fade as their racing careers wound down, but the opposite happened. From Silicon Valley to Wall Street, cycling is the new golf for power brokers forging deals and creating new companies. On Main Street, we’re all starting to learn about the value of leading healthier and greener lifestyles. What better way to embrace both of these values than to ride your bike? In our offices, we are inspired by the notion that we are feeding a positive addiction: America’s growing addiction to cycling. For us, it’s now truly the best of both worlds. This also applies to Veltec’s heritage. We’ve been an integral part of the world of European cycling for longer than we can remember, and since 1984, part of the growing cycling scene in the U.S. Being on both sides of the ocean enables our team to be very much in tune with the latest developments in the cycling industry. From day one, Veltec has always focused on providing quality products to the bicycle enthusiast. In our minds, quality is first, last and always. In this issue of Veltec Magazine, you will find some of the world’s finest cycling products that have powered dozens and dozens of legendary athletes: Greg LeMond, Pedro Delgado, Sean Kelly, and Eddie Merckx, as well as legends-in-themaking such as Carlos Sastre, Frank and Andy Schleck, Cadel Evans, and Fabian Cancellara. Spoken straight from the heart and conveying a

passion that is as Italian as Ferrari and Ducati, Paolo Bettini reveals his shoe fetish. The competitive rivalry between Sven Nys and Lars Boom is unlike anything the sport of Cyclocross has seen in decades. Inside, we reveal one common factor that unites these two athletes who dominate their sport. And it is really not the men who are making the biggest impact in the sport. Women’s full-throttle participation in cycling is one of the major developments over the last few years. Take note of Veltec athlete Yvonne van Vlerken, who, after we went to print with the story about her world record in the ‘Ironman-Distance’ triathlon, just placed 2nd in her first Ironman World Championships in Kona. The story about Italian Claudio Corsini is so emotional and close to my heart that it is difficult to read, let alone write about. For his sixtieth birthday, Corsini is riding his Colnago across the U.S. to honor the beloved daughter he lost in a tragic accident. Read about his quest, and the unexpected kindness that inspired him to smile again. We hope you will enjoy reading the magazine as much as we enjoyed making it. Live sustainably, ride with passion and stay fit!

For the Love of

Lisa

Claudio “Fab” Corsini

vividly remembers the day he met Ernesto Colnago. He was mourning the death of his youngest daughter, Lisa, when a friend suggested Corsini do something special as a distraction from the grief. This friend worked for a professional bike racing team sponsored by Colnago Bicycles. He arranged a meeting between the grieving father and Colnago himself to discuss Corsini’s dream bicycle. What was supposed to be a brief morning meeting, on Colnago’s schedule as a favor for a business colleague, became a half-day affair. Corsini showed up on his current bicycle, a steel machine built by a local artisan. “Who made this clunker?” Colnago asked. After Corsini explained the bike’s origin, Colnago became highly agitated. “This is not a bicycle! It’s a house fence, a gate!” Colnago demanded the telephone number of the local bike maker. “This guy is an idiot,” he said as he dialed. Once

by Jayme Otto

the local artisan was on the line, Colnago introduced himself and proceeded to give the guy an earful. The result? Howling laughter. The local bike maker and Colnago were old friends. The founder of the world’s most legendary bicycle manufacturing company had just put one over on Fab Corsini. In Reggio Emilia, the city where Corsini lives, bicycles are a primary mode of transportation. Before he retired, Corsini worked in a managerial position at a local bank. With more than 300 employees, bike parking was a major concern for the bank. “Where do you find a rack long enough to put 250 bikes?” Corsini asked.

For this Italian father, fulfilling a life-long dream of riding across the United States on his Colnago bicycle becomes a fitting tribute to his daughter

In Corsini’s eyes, Colnago was the most prestigious bike you could buy. “They had an excellent technical reputation and the bikes had very good looks,” Corsini said. He recalled days where everyone made bikes out of steel, while Colnago was pushing the envelope with materials like carbon, aluminum, and titanium.

Fab’s Colnago takes a break during a ride through Monti Pallidi, Italy in 2004

20 VELTECmagazine

With a new bike, and a new perspective, Corsini established an endowed scholarship in Lisa’s memory. The Lisa Corsini Memorial Scholarship provides support to undergraduate nursing students at the Urbana-Champaign campus of the UIC College of Nursing whose legal residence is either the State of Illinois or Italy, and who demonstrate a passion for nursing, financial need, and academic merit.

“I put her name on my bicycle, and when I ride, I love to think that she’s there.” Corsini recounted the story of Colnago’s partnership with Ferrari and the evolution of the “straight fork,” with fondness. He recalled how everyone at that time thought Mr. Colnago was crazy to deviate from cycling’s standard curved fork, even after seeing proof in the Ferrari wind tunnel. “Today,” Corsini said proudly, “everyone uses Mr. Colnago’s straight fork design.” Despite his love of Colnago bicycles, Corsini did not own one himself. He could not justify owning such a fine bicycle just to commute to work or ride the hills around town with his local bike club on Sundays. Things changed when Lisa died. Lisa Corsini, a dual citizen of Italy and the United States, was a 24 year-old nursing student at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing Urbana—Champaign Regional Program when she died on September 9, 2001, after being hit by a car while crossing the street. Corsini last saw his daughter a month earlier, when she was home in Italy to visit the family. Following Lisa’s wishes, the family donated Lisa’s organs and tissue to more than 33 people, including an 18 year-old nursing student with heart disease, a 21-year old with cystic fibrosis, and a 55 year-old retired teacher. But it wasn’t enough for Corsini. “At the time I was numb, nothing mattered; I was locked in an armor to protect my soul from further sorrows; nothing made me happy or sad,” he said. Corsini agreed to meet Colnago that morning in 2002, and was immediately touched by Colnago’s willingness to spend time with him, a stranger. “I was impressed how this businessman, Mr. Colnago, would take a whole morning off just to dig me out of my hole,” Corsini said. “I bought myself the best bike money could buy that day and the memory of his kindness is still with me.”

This year, for his 60th birthday and in honor of his daughter, Corsini will ride 3,000 miles (5000km) across the United States from San Diego to New York over a period of twenty days with a group of fifteen Italian cyclists. To fulfill this life-long dream, Corsini expects to spend 12-16 hours per day in the saddle,

Corsini had Colnago’s artisans inscribe Lisa’s name into the top tube of his bike. Lisa had a bicycle from the day she could walk. As typical in their Italian city, Lisa rode her bike to school everyday from the time she was seven-years old, through high school. When Lisa was 15, Corsini showed her a training route where she could ride during the week after school. She trained twice a week for 1-2 hours depending on her schoolwork. On Saturdays, father and daughter would go on 2-5 hour rides in the hills around town. “We called them mountains,” Corsini laughed. Lisa liked to climb because she enjoyed the challenge. “Her body was growing and changing. On the hills, she found that she could master her body,” Corsini said. She was not going for speed yet at that point, just trying to figure out her limits. “Things like hills,” Corsini said, “they build your self-esteem, doing something you never imagined you could do. Those were my favorite times with my daughter.” After Lisa was gone, an acquaintance sent a condolence letter that stayed with Corsini, “He was an older person, I didn’t know very well. But he wrote and said, ‘Remember, whenever you ride your bike, your daughter will be sitting on the bar with you.’ At the time, when I was mourning, that touched my heart. So I put the name on my bicycle. And when I ride, I love to think that she’s there.” Corsini started riding more seriously on his new Colnago. In 2003, he completed a randonnée, consisting of 1200km from Paris to Brest and back to Paris. To qualify for this event, he had to complete a series of brevets (randonneuring events) that same year. The series consisted of 200km, 300km, 400km and 600km rides. “During that, I learned a lot about biking, about my body, and about the surprising fact that if you don’t burn out your muscles, you can flex them forever, as long as you feed them oxygen and nutrients,” he said.

covering between 110 and 170 miles per day. In preparation for this event, Corsini is focusing more on his mind than on his body. “My main training is mental, because you have to be nuts to do this!” he said. The Corsini Coast-to-Coast USA Bike Ride will also serve as a fundraiser for The Lisa Corsini Memorial Scholarship. But Corsini admits that the journey is about more than just the money. “We care most about sharing Lisa’s memory. We’ll write our friends and tell them about my ride, and I’ll share her story with the people I meet on the ride, and all across the U.S. It’s a chance to talk about our daughter again.” Veltec is sponsoring Fab Corsini’s dream ride across the U.S. He’ll be completing the ride on his custom Colnago bike bearing Lisa’s name. $1 for every Colnago sold in the U.S. for the 2008-2009 selling season will go to The Lisa Corsini Memorial Scholarship in her honor. a letter from ...

Paolo Bet I

In the course of a career a cyclist changes many things: jerseys, bicycles, direction, often teammates and opponents.

Only one thing has never changed in all this time, the shoes I use. Yes, I am speaking of my beloved cycling shoes. My Sidis have followed me to every corner of the world as my trusted companions, the fruit of the experience and the creativity of Dino Signori, Mr. Sidi. Dino and his company have been with me since 1997 when I made my first pedal strokes as a professional. In these years, and there is no reason to hide it, our professional relation has become a true friendship to the point where Dino, today, wished to celebrate our collaboration by creating the Bettini Ergo 2. The product of high-technology and captivating design, they are a symbol of the many great successes that I have achieved to the music of my pedaling—from victories in the Italian National Championships, to the successes in Stuttgart thru Athens and Salzburg. I am sure that you, like me, will be seduced by the technical qualities and feel the passion that only this exclusive and extraordinary cycling shoe can offer. Thank you to all of you who love cycling and excellence. –Paolo Bettini

A Letter From

Paolo Bettini in his own words ...

N

26 VELTECmagazine

Carbon Composite Sole

The Carbon Composite Sole is constructed using the same design as the revolutionary Full Carbon Sole and is thinner in the toe to provide a slight amount of flex while retaining excellent stiffness and power transfer in the body of the shoe. The sole is engineered for the high-performance, high-mileage cyclist who requires a sole that is rigid but does not compromise the foot’s blood circulation. The Carbon Composite sole is made out of injected Carbon Fiber in a matrix of Nylon12. The Nylon12 matrix doesn’t absorb water and doesn’t lose rigidity in hot or humid weather or as it ages. The result is a sole that is 65 grams lighter per pair and stiffer than the previous Hi-Tech Carbon Sole.

Millennium 3 Sole

The NEW Millennium 3 sole is a sleek, modern redesign of the Millennium 2 sole. By fortifying the sole with carbon fiber, Sidi designers have created a new sole that improves on the technical characteristics of the previous nylon sole. The Millennium 3 sole is constructed out of injected carbon fiber in a matrix of Nylon 6.6. The infusion of carbon fiber gives the sole 37% more rigidity than the previous Millennium 2 sole. The Millennium 3 sole is also more durable and less susceptible to changes in stiffness resulting from prolonged usage and changes in temperature. The Millennium 3 sole features a new replaceable non-slip polyurethane heel pad. To prevent the screw attaching the heel pad from loosening over time, the heel pad is held in place by two small plastic tabs. The Millennium 3 is compatible with the best road pedals on the market. To facilitate cleat replacement, the Millennium 3 sole features a 10 mm horizontal and vertical cleat alignment scale molded into the sole as well as the Look Memory Eyelet.

New Iron Distance female world record holder.

Yvonne van Vlerken—

Y

The Flying Dutchgirl

Yvonne van Vlerken was not on the list of the favorites for the Quelle Challenge Roth Triathlon in 2007. As a Duathlon-specialist she had become World and European Champion on the long-course in 2006, but this success was less recognized in the public outside of her native country. As a strong cyclist and a good runner Yvonne came to the Quelle Challenge with two goals: to have a solid Ironman-distance debut and to finish in the top 5. When she took the lead during the run at km 24, nobody was thinking of the Female World Record. But Yvonne’s surprise win was accompanied by a blazing time of 8:51:55, missing the world record by only 62 seconds and recording the second fastest female time ever for this long distance event. Only two months after the Quelle Challenge in 2007 she proved that her victory in Roth was not just a lucky strike. At the UPC Triathlon Almere in her native country, Yvonne finished again under the 9 hour-barrier in 8:57:54. She was the first female athlete in the history of triathlon to go under 9 hours twice on the Ironman distance in one season.

36 VELTECmagazine

In Almere Yvonne also set a new Female World Record on the bike over the 180km course in an Ironman-distance race: 4:45:59 hours. After her second hit on the Triathlon Long Course the Dutch press started calling her “de vliegende Hollandse”, which translates to “The Flying Dutch Girl.” 2008 marked another year of surprises for Yvonne. Her second trip to the Quelle Challenge Roth Triathlon resulted in the “Ironman Distance” female world record. Her finishing time of 8:45:48 smashed the previous best by more than 5 minutes. Yvonne now has her sights set on the Ford Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in October of 2008. Her fast bike time may be the key to nabbing the win, but her training for the next few months will be focused on improving her swim and run times. And if the weather cooperates, Yvonne feels a new course record is within reach.

DRAGON CARBON SRS SOLE The heart of the revolutionary and patented MTB SRS carbon sole is a pure carbon insert reaching from the heel to the toe. The carbon insert and the replaceable Dragon SRS tread are bolted to a narrow, durable nylon frame. This unique design provides a slight amount of flex in the toe while retaining excellent stiffness and power transfer in the body of the shoe. The sole is engineered for the highperformance, high-mileage cyclist who requires a sole that is rigid but does not compromise the foot’s blood circulation, guaranteeing excellent comfort and great power transfer. In order to achieve maximum shoe life the carbon inserts and the Dragon SRS tread are easily removable and replaceable. A polyurethane anti-slip insert has been positioned in the Metatarsus area. The Dragon SRS Sole is toe spike compatible. 43

ICEFIL™ Overheating is a serious concern when competing. Even modest overheating can lead to decreased performance which is why it is crucial to stay cool during a workout or race. Icefil is an innovative material that actually cools the body by up to 5 degrees while you sweat. Icefil is treated with Xylitol, a naturally occurring substance found in many sources. Xylitol allows Icefil fabric to cool the body naturally. As the top layer of the material blocks infrared sun rays, the next layer wicks the sweat from your skin. As your body heat and sweat are absorbed, the material cools, giving a natural freshness and cooling throughout the body. ICEFIL™ keeps an athlete cooler for longer periods in extreme heat conditions, hence increasing performance for longer periods.

OFF ROAD COLLECTION

From their introduction a couple years ago the Newton and Nova shorts have garnered more rewards and positive feedback than we could ever have imagined. From “Best Of” product in Bicycling Magazine and other glowing magazine reviews to being a North Shore and Moab favorite, these shorts continue to set the standard.

GENETIC TEE

Cyclingnews said it best: “Descente sparked a veritable revolution when it first introduced its Newton MTB short, and now that we’ve sampled it ourselves we can see why. The Newton MTB is simply a superb example of the breed with an exceptionally lightweight and easy-to-clean matte nylon shell, irritation-free welded seams, and a perfect cut that successfully blends function with sharp styling. On the trail, the inseam just barely covers the knee (as it should) yet a reasonably close-fitting crotch area resists saddle snags.” –www.cyclingnews.com (ON MODEL)

The race of a lifetime

Andy Hampsten battles a blizzard on the Passo di Gavia in the 14th stage of the 1988 Giro d’italia. Hampsten finishes the stage second, but clinches the lead in the overall classification.

Andy Hampsten gets a far away look in his eyes when you ask him about the 1988 Giro d’Italia. That was the year Hampsten won the overall title, becoming the first non-European – and still only American – to triumph in the prestigious three-week bicycle race. Yet Hampsten’s look does not convey fond remembrance. Even 20 years later, this is still a painful memory. To understand where Hampsten’s mind has taken him, imagine riding your bike for several hours in the middle of raging snowstorm. Preposterous you say? Well that’s exactly what Hampsten and the rest of his Giro competitors did during one very brutal day of racing. To make matters worse, the stage 14 route took Hampsten and company up and over the famed Passo di Gavia, an 8600-foot high mountain in the jagged Italian Alps. And while the climb up wasn’t too bad – exertion equals warmth – the 15-mile, bone-chilling descent pushed Hampsten -- and the other riders who opted not to quit at the summit -- into a dark, scary place. “I was seriously concerned for my health,” recalled Hampsten, then a member of the famed 7-Eleven cycling team. “It’s by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I’d never been in a place like that before, and have definitely never been back. Psychologically, no one can explain how tough it was – an hour of descending in freezing snow and sleet. Everyone had to dig incredibly deep.” Instead of giving in to the pain like many of his rivals, the lithe climbing specialist ploughed on, crossing the finish line second. The heroic effort pushed Hampsten into the overall lead, a place he retained all the way to the grand tour’s finish in Milan. Looking back, Hampsten points to a handful of difference makers. Skill, will and sheer determination top the list, but he also benefited from the tactical savvy of Mike Neel, 7-Eleven’s wily team director. Neel watched the weather closely leading up to the stage. Once it became clear snow was inevitable, he started preparing his team for 62 VELTECmagazine

the worst. Among those plans was to send a team staffer to the top of the Gavia climb ahead of the race. “Basically this was the invention of rain bags,” explained Hampsten, alluding to now-commonplace practice of keeping a stash of warm justin-case clothes for each rider in the team support car. “We had a guy at the summit who had musette bags stuffed with warm clothes for every rider on the team. That made a huge difference on the descent.” The contents of those bags included a mix of team-issue Descente clothing and a hodge-podge of heavier foul-weather gear that was purchased during a pre-race raid on the local ski apparel stores. “It’s not like Descente was making snowmobile suits for us, so we had to use whatever we could get our hands on,” Hampsten explained. “But the Descente stuff we had was great. It was definitely the best gear going at the time. It helped me get down the mountain in one piece.” Hampsten wasn’t the only one impressed by the performance of the American-based team’s apparel. European riders were also taking notice of their new competitor’s cutting-edge garments. “There was definitely a lot of envy,” Hampsten recalled. “The jerseys were made of this really cool fabric that just stretched the right way and was super comfortable. The shorts were the same way. That was back when we were still using natural chamois, and the Descente stuff was consistently good.” The same could be said of Hampsten’s performances. Nicknamed Le Petit Lapin (the little rabbit) for his ability to bound away on steep ascents, he became one of America’s greatest pure climbers, putting together a resume that included a pair of Tour of Switzerland titles, victory in the Tour de France’s infamous Alpe d’Huez stage, and his record-setting ’88 Giro d’Italia triumph. So grand was Hampsten’s greatness that the city of his youth, Grand Forks, North Dakota, named a 40-mile stretch of roadways and bike

paths after its famous cycling son. Today, Hampsten remains much the same man he was in his formative years, fit, energetic and passionate. But instead of channeling his energy into racing bikes, he leads high-end cycling tours in Italy. “It’s the best place in the world to ride,” said the 46-year-old father of one who spends his winters in Boulder, Colorado. “It’s a beautiful country that has a love affair with the bicycle.” Descente has traced a similar path, neither forgetting its roots, nor fearing change. The company’s obsessive commitment to developing the highest quality performance cycling gear is deeply rooted in the demanding requirements of legendary teams such as 7-Eleven and Panasonic, and the men who rode for them such as Hampsten, Eric Heiden and Lance Armstrong.” After a brief hiatus, the company’s endurance sports brand was revived in North America by former pro bike racer Hugh Walton. In 2008, Descente joined forces with Veltec Sports, becoming the licensee in North America and Europe. Today, Descente continues to innovate and grow, leveraging 70 years of experience and collective passion for sport. The ongoing mission remains the same: crafting the finest technical cycling and triathlon apparel available anywhere in the world. “Our objective is the same now as it was in Andy’s racing days,” said Walton. “We are always pushing the envelope to develop new cutting-edge products.” It’s a strategy that served Hampsten well at the infamous 1988 Giro d’Italia, and one that continues to benefit Descente’s legion of loyal customers today. Oh yeah.. wondering who crossed the finish line first in that toughest and coldest stage 14 of the ‘88 Giro? It was Dutchman Erik Breukink, riding for another legendary team, Panasonic, in Descente gear. Coincidence? Not a chance!

TRIATHLON Thirty-five years ago, on September 25, 1974 the first triathlon was held in San Diego. The entry fee that day was one dollar and the ad that ran in the San Diego Track Club newsletter reminded participants to bring their own bikes. Forty-six competitors and almost as many beach cruisers and 3-speeds showed up for the race that evening. The radical idea of combining the three disciplines into one race can be credited to Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone. It took more than a few years for those two to realize they had made sports history that Wednesday evening on Mission Bay. And what a long way the sport has come. From Ironman® to the Olympics, the sport demands a super-human level of fitness, dedication and diversity from its athletes. But at other levels the sport has opened its arms to the budding athlete and weekend warrior at all levels. The technology and diversity of equipment the sport has spawned due to its demanding and diverse nature is unprecedented in the history of sport. From bikes to accessories to apparel, the development never stops. Descente is proud to be at the cutting edge of this creative boom. Our Aero-XT tri material is highly aero and hydrodynamic, has a soft hand, dries quickly and has a great fit. The “highamplitude” structure of the interior creates “low-amplitude” dimples on the surface of the material, facilitating evaporation and allowing the right amount of turbulence across the fabric surface, thus lowering drag in the water and on the bike.

CHAMOIS TECHNOLOGY The MicroFuse™ chamois is welded, molded, anatomical and state-of-the-art. The shape and fit has been minimized to provide the exact amount of protection necessary for better comfort and cycling performance. Our research proves that you only need protection in the critical areas – the contact points between you and your saddle. Reducing the excess bulk facilitates the compression, fit and function of our technically advanced shorts. We’ve welded the chamois directly to the interior of the short for a smooth transition between materials to prevent chaffing. The pre-shaped, open-cell, perforated foam reduces pressure points and breathes for dryness and comfort while our SpeedFree™ stretch polyester fabric is perfect for eliminating skin friction and moisture build-up. The Micro-Fuse chamois is also treated with a HYGIENIC® anti-microbial product.

Our new Stealth HDI (High Density Insert) chamois takes the monocoque design used in our Stealth chamois one step further. With enhanced padding and a perforated high-density insert in the three critical contact points the Stealth HDI covers all the bases. And with perforation in the wing and front sections the chamois is cooler than ever. The Stealth HDI chamois is treated with HYGIENIC® anti-microbial solution. And on top of all this, the chamois stretches the perfect amount so that it conforms to your body and to your bike shorts. Utilizing new molding technology, we developed the Stealth chamois for a wide range of prices and uses. It is formed in an anatomical mold with few components, providing a simple yet advanced, lightweight pad for great protection and comfort. The seamless “monocoque” design works because it is pre-shaped to fit your anatomy. For this year we have increases the thickness and density of the foam for even greater comfort. The different levels and foam thicknesses will optimize protection at pressure points and the 100% stretch polyester MicroX-Fine fabric is anti-microbial and highly breathable. The open-cell foam and perforation promotes rapid evaporation of perspiration, a key to the comfort of any chamois.

italian design, innovation, technology

P

Prologo burst onto the scene in 2006, cutting an immediate niche in the saddle market with innovative design concepts steeped in the traditional Italian standards of quality and luxury. The company’s focus is entirely on developing and producing the finest saddles on the market through real world testing and cutting-edge technologies. Based in the region of Lombardy, in Cavenago di Brianza, about 25 km northeast of Milan, Prologo joined the Veltec line-up in 2008. Also in 2008, Prologo sponsored one of the strongest teams in the world: Team CSC-Saxo Bank. Other Prologo sponsored teams include Milram, Rabobank, AG2R Prevoyance, and Tinkoff. Prologo considers its sponsored teams one of the most important ingredients in product innovation. The ability to test product function on race day or on training rides, in all conditions, and get the feedback from the world’s best enables Prologo to make those micro-adjustments that give them the competitive edge in the market.

Nicola Vernaglione, Prologo’s general manager, recognizes that many professional riders are hesitant to experiment with equipment changes. But his company’s ability to reach the next level of innovation depends on riders such as Fabian Cancellara being flexible enough to try something new.

Vernaglione’s dream was to join Team CSC, the top cycling team and the most technical and demanding team in the professional cycling world. He wanted to transfer his passion, experience and know-how to supporting the team and their growing needs. Prologo considers their relationship with Team CSC a real technical partnership and not just a sponsorship. Fortunately, riders like Cancellara, along with CSC teammates, Fränk Schleck, Andy Schleck, and Rabobank’s Oscar Freire, are open to working with Prologo and to testing new solutions. They understand that working with their technical sponsors will ultimately increase their performance. Vernaglione credits teams like CSC and Rabobank for fostering cultures of innovation and progressive technological advancement. Cancellara, the current and two-time World Time Trial Champion, worked very closely with Prologo on the development of the Prologo Scratch Fabian 5541. At the beginning of the collaboration the focus was on stiffness and hardness. Once that was dialed in, saddle position was addressed. When you change a saddle, as the team did in January, one of the key points is not only the shape but also the position. Position change can be difficult for riders to embrace, but is a critical component to maximizing efficiency. Verniglione credits Cancellara for taking the lead in embracing the process of innovation.

Prologo Scratch Fabian 5541 (named for Fabian’s World Champ TT time of 55:41)

• Base: Carbon Fiber HWD • Rail: Pro Ti Solid HT, Titanium utilized in the aerospace industry with heat treatment designed to increase stiffness and fatigue resistance • Padding: Super Light 60° • Weight: 198 Grams The PROLOGO SCRATCH FABIAN 5541 saddle is only available to the two time ITT World Champion. The rest of the team is riding the PROLOGO SCRATCH TR which is also now available in the Prologo retail lineup. And Cancellara is pleased with the results of the collaboration as well. “When we gave the company input they listened. After all of our talks and the input, we now see what has come from it and we are really happy. We can now look and say it’s the best saddle in the world.” Also new to the lineup is the Vertigo collection for Mountain bikers; a complete carefully planned high-tech line made to respond to this ever more particular and demanding world of cycling.

Tri Women:

A True Force in the Field by Lori Hinton

Swim, bike, run (repeat). Swim, bike, run (repeat). Swim, bike, run (repeat). It’s a mantra reverberating with women all over the world—growing louder and more powerful each year. What is it about triathlon that has first timers and Olympic champions alike singing the same tune?

T

The decision to tackle the sport of triathlon depends on the person. Some women simply want to get in shape while others are looking for serious competition. Some are reaching for gold medals while others are reaching for goals to cure cancer. But one thing all women seem to find is a challenge—to do more than they have before, more than they ever thought possible. “It’s very gratifying to finish a triathlon, and if you tell people you’ve done an Ironman, well then, there’s a great mystique that follows,” beams Michellie Jones, Ironman Champion & Olympic Silver Medalist. “But it doesn’t matter whether you do a sprint distance or Ironman, with triathlon there’s always something you must overcome.” Cherie Gruenfeld discovered the sport at age 48. “I was first inspired by watching the L.A. Marathon. Never having been involved in athletics, my only activity was climbing the corporate ladder. But when I saw this race, it made me realize there must be more to life than drinking coffee and eating sticky buns, so I decided to run a marathon.” Gruenfeld read up on running, and five months later, at her first race, she qualified for the Boston Marathon (Boston was only her second race). And though she thought it was a crazy idea at one time, the Ironman ended up on her “to do” list and she never returned to the corporate world again.

92 VELTECmagazine

With a mere 20 Ironmans under her belt, Gruenfeld is now 64 and training for yet another Ironman while using her experience to teach kids how to set goals and work hard (and do their first tri). But no matter how accomplished a triathlete becomes, there was once a first time for everyone, and most shared the same goal—to finish.

First Finish, Not Finish First The first goal in triathlon shalt not be to finish first, but rather to finish at all— especially for beginners. “First time triathletes are like a bud waiting to blossom—open minded and ready to soak up all the advice they can,” explains

National & World Duathlon Champion Jenni Keil. “But over time, and sometimes even on the first time, these women begin to develop a competitive edge. Then it all comes full circle when they become the experienced ones and inspire the next wave of beginners. It’s a beautiful thing.” But can’t we be happy just to finish? Yes and no. Sure, it’s a great feeling to cross that finish line in one piece, but many-a-triathlete will tell you that even before you’ve started icing your ankle or popping Advil after your first race, you are already thinking about the next one… wondering…will you push yourself to go faster, or perhaps farther? Maybe even try something like, (gulp), an Ironman?

especially something as daunting as a tri, but if one woman takes initiative, another woman can say to herself, ‘If she can do it, I can too.’” Women are also known for being great recruiters.

Michellie Jones, 2006 Kona Ironman Champion

Ironman, Are You Nuts? In 1978, when the Ironman first began, there was a question of whether it could even be done. And the answer was, yes, it can. Then the question became, can a woman a do it? And there were some brave women who “just did it” (even before Nike said to). In 1982, thousands of people drew inspiration from Julie Moss’s utter will and determination as she crawled across the finish on hands and knees suffering from severe dehydration. These early pioneers—strong, courageous, confident women—became role models for the accomplished athletes of today. But believe it or not, two-time Ironman Champion Michellie Jones still thinks the Ironman is nuts. “For years and years I swore I would never do anything that crazy (in fact, I still think it’s nuts). The distances are just so long. But I got talked into it, and found it’s amazing what you can do if you train,” she continues. “I raced my first Ironman in Florida and won. Then came the Hawaiian Ironman, where I placed second on my first try in 05, and won it on my next try in 06.” Not bad for an Aussie who thinks the Ironman is only for the insane!

More than Medals: Women Find Meaning (& Matching Shoes) But triathlon is about more than collecting medals and bragging rights. Much more. And women are becoming a huge force behind the growth of the sport. Why? “Women love to share their experiences with other women,” explains Jones. “We understand sports can be intimidating,

“As a coach, I notice women are always bringing new people into the sport—whether they grab their coworker, a sister, or a friend— they reach out and encourage their peers to try something new with them, or they do it because they have already completed a tri and want to share their joy with the people closest to them,” explains Keil. They find role models in their best friends as much as they do in the women who pioneered the sport.

way to make sports less intimidating and fun. We are finally getting what we want.”

Tri Lessons for Life So if the thought of cute shoes and a buff bod doesn’t pique your interest, our triad of tri gals’ words of wisdom concur that triathlon is much more than a sport, but rather a lesson on how to approach all things in life. “If I could tell women one thing about triathlon, really about life in general,” says Michellie Jones, “It’s don’t be afraid to try something new; just take a step and do something you’ve never done before. Get out of your comfort zone, and it’s amazing what you’ll find.”

“I’ve always looked up to those who came before me—they set a standard and demanded respect. And now, when parents come up to me and say, ‘Michellie, we love what you’re doing and now our daughter wants to be a triathlete,’ I think that little girl must see more than just my pink suit and matching Sidi shoes—it’s the most rewarding feeling I know.” But speaking of matching shoes, it’s no secret that women are not only becoming a force to be reckoned with in terms of competition and growth (take for example, the women’s only events like the Danskin and Tri for a Cure—the sheer number of participants is staggering and events sell out in no time), but women are also changing the way tri gear is being made and marketed. “The many women’s triathlons around the country are creating an avenue for women to discover a challenge they would have never considered before,” describes Jones. “But they are also helping the world take notice that women are looking for certain things—whether it’s women’s specific equipment or pink Sidis—we’re finding a

“We understand sports can be intimidating, especially something as daunting as a tri, but if one woman takes initiative, another woman can say to herself, ‘If she can do it, I can too.’”

Jenni Keil, ’ 07 National + World Age Group Duathlon Champion

We often excuse our way out of challenges, why? Well, because they are challenging. But the rewards outweigh the difficulties along the way. “Just go out there and try,” encourages Jenni Keil. “The first time may be hard, but you’ll gain a great respect for what your body and mind can do.” And perhaps a great bit of advice that speaks to all of those who say, “I coulda, woulda, shoulda,” Cherie Gruenfeld implores you: “Get in the arena, don’t find yourself sitting on the outside saying ‘I wish I could’ or ‘I’d like to.’ Just get in there and try it.” So whether you chose to do a tri to get in shape, challenge your mental toughness, raise money for a good cause, or become a champion, chances are, you’ll find what you’re looking for, and more. Ready? Swim, bike, run (repeat). 93

This season we are most excited about the introduction of carbon yarn into some of our products. While most cyclists think of carbon as a material used to make high performance bikes, carbon also has some remarkable benefits when knitted with other fabrics. Our new carbon fabric has a natural thermal regulator which can lower the body’s core temperature. This can additionally benefit your riding experience by potentially lowering heart rate, increasing oxygen uptake, lowering core body temperature and slowing the formation of lactic acid. Carbon also suppresses the formation of odor and offers UVA and UVB protection. But most importantly, our carbon fabrics are soft to the skin and luxuriously comfortable.

Vredestein tires are powered by Cadel Evans and the entire Silence Lotto team.

Vredestein

is located in Enschede, Netherlands on the Rhine River, near the German border. The Dutch company has been producing the finest bicycling tires on the market for over 50 years. Now an international company, they produce tires of all kinds. This success has fostered their ability to continually design and develop the top performing two wheel tires in the world.

When other tire companies were putting paraffin in their tread to increase shelf life, Vredestein was pioneering high-silica tread compounds to increase tread life without affecting handling or performance. And while others advertise “tubular-quality ride, Vredestein delivers, with a casing technology that permits a 145psi recommended pressure for lower rolling resistance and unsurpassed cornering consistency. Tread, rubber, and pressure are just three examples of the difference between precision and fanatical precision. 107

Vredestein tires are not mass produced. The tread of the tires is formed with a parabolic shape independently from the casing, so the rubber does not have to rely on the casing to give it its shape. This puts less stress on the rubber which allows for slower, more even wearing.

tire technology Full Contact Protection Exclusive to the Quattro Tri-Comp, this improved puncture resistance system extends protection from the center of the tread, through the shoulders, to the sides of the tire. SPL Sportex Protection Layer A layer of polyamide, a plastic based composite runs down the center of the tread and ensures the tire is light and very strong. TriComp Technology Softer tire shoulder tread ensures the best grip while cornering, while a harder center tread provides a longer wearing tire with less rolling resistance. Curve Control System The recommended inflation pressure of 145psi of Vredestein tires enables them not to deform under hard cornering, giving a much more consistent feel—a feature that is especially noticeable under larger riders.

PRS A highly effective composite layer placed under the center tread to protect against flats. TriComp Technology Silica Energy Compound Provides optimum grip on a wide range of surfaces for better control. The Dual Overlapping Casing Constructed with 120 tpi provides extra casing under the tread for improved flat protection, creating a 3 ply contact patch. Full Contact Protection layer Featured exclusively in the Fortezza Quattro TriComp is a flexible yet highly puncture resistant layer that wraps from bead to bead, helping prevent flats. The Dual-compound Tread Harder in the center for decreased rolling resistance and decreased wear, softer on the sides for cornering grip. The Kevlar beads Makes for a supple, lightweight bead and ensures the tire is easy to get on and off.

Bissell Pro Cycling Team

T

The 2007 Tour of California was a trying time for the Bissell Pro Cycling Team. Besides battling a field that included eight top-tier ProTour outfits, Bissell riders spent an inordinate amount of time pulled off the side of road while team mechanics swapped out wheels. “I think the final count was something like 30 flat tires in seven days,” recalled Glen Mitchell, director of the pro continental team. “It was not an ideal situation.” The end result wasn’t much better, with Ben Jacques-Maynes finishing as the team’s top placed rider in 34th place. Flash forward to the 2008 Tour of California, and the outcome was far different. Jacques-Maynes climbed 18 places in the final general classification, and the team placed a respectable 10th overall. But most impressively, team director Mitchell and his crew of capable mechanics only had to deal with four punctures during a week of hard racing.

Tom Zirbel’s brave attack during the very wet final stage of the Tour of California. He managed to hold off the splintered chase group until the final lap. His Vredestein tires performed flawlessly in the rainy conditions.

“It got to the point where we were almost bored sitting in the race caravan,” joked Mitchell, a former pro rider and two-time member of the New Zealand Olympic team. “Our car would get called up to back of the peloton once in a while to give the guys water or food, but otherwise it was a pretty stress-free week.” This decided lack of drama—and the accompanying improved results—has become the team’s 2008 hallmark. Bissell has been a player in nearly every stage race its entered, culminating with Richard England’s stunning stage 5 triumph at the Tour de Georgia, an event top-heavy with ProTour talent. The team went one better at June’s Tour de Nez, with Steven Howard capturing the opening stage and veteran Aaron Olson walking away with the overall crown. “You can’t argue with our progress,” added Mitchell. “We’re on the right path.”

Leading Bissell down that path is its new-for-2008 tire sponsor Vredestein. The Dutch company is a standby in the European peloton, and now is taking the U.S. race scene by storm. “The difference in performance between Vredestein and other tires is amazing,” explained Bissell head mechanic Ben Oliver. “I’ve gotten nothing but high praise from the riders, and we’ve had so few flats that I barely ever get out of the team car anymore.” But perhaps Jacques-Maynes sums it up best when asked about what the new tires have meant to the team. “They offer a perfect combination of weight, durability and grip,” he said. “From hard criteriums to fast time trials we have full confidence that they’ll keep us glued to the ground—and coming across the line first.” - Jason Sumner

Breakdown: The 29-year-old father of two provides steady leadership both on and off the bike. He relishes his role as team captain, and according to team director Glen Mitchell, is an expert at teaching race tactics to Bissell’s younger riders. “He’s great at explaining why we chase certain breaks and let others go up the road,” said Mitchell. “That’s really important for this team because we have a lot of riders who are newer to the sport and are still learning the trade.” That’s not to say that Jacques-Maynes’ best years are behind him. The Californian was second in the NRC standings released on June 23rd. “I don’t think we’ve seen Ben’s full potential yet,” predicted Mitchell. “He gets a little faster each year.”

That’s a testament to his wide skill base that’s netted everything from criterium wins to King of the Mountain titles. “Teddy’s a big guy – 6-foot-2, 175 pounds – so for him to be competitive in such a wide array of races is a true testament to his abilities,” explained Mitchell. “If he keeps up his current rate of progression, he’s going to be a star.” It doesn’t hurt that king is one of the team’s most cerebral riders. His favorite off-the-bike hobby is doing The New York Times crossword puzzle.

Name: Tom Zirbel Residence: Boulder, Colorado Specialty: time trials Career highlights: 5th stage 7 2008 Tour of California, 1st stage 3 2008 Tour of the Gila

Breakdown: The 29-year-old nearly pulled off a win for the ages, breaking away solo in the waning moments of the final stage at the 2008 Tour of California. The burly 6-foot-4, 194-pounder was caught on the race’s final lap, but Zirbel’s bravado that day and continued development as a time trial specialist have earned him rising-star status. “We’ve seen his time trialing strength, but for his size he’s a surprisingly good climber,” explained Mitchell. “And he’s reasonably new to sport, so with a little more grooming I think you’re going to see a rider capable of some really big results.”

enervit Nutrition is a fairly complex science, and the simplistic products sold as snack foods and soft drinks are inadequate to meet the needs of competitive cyclists or runners. Thanks to Dr. Paolo Sorbini, Enervit is now the world’s only complete, integrated, modular sports nutrition system designed expressly for elite athletes. In addition to some of the most sophisticated nutritional science in the world, Enervit’s genius lies in its unique modular approach: just select products from the chart to match the specific demands of your workout or competition and you’re ready to ride. A longtime favorite among elite European athletes (where in some markets it outsells the #1 energy product in North America by more than two to one), the Enervit modular energy system is now available at elite North American cycling retailers.

“We are very proud of the fact that every Enervit product is created in a pollution-free area, at our factory in the Alps.”- —Dr. Paolo Sorbini

The longer the activity, the more nutrition your body needs to take on. Conversely, it becomes more difficult to take on nutrients without overloading your ability to digest the food you’re taking in.

FACT

3

Your digestive tract fatigues the same as the rest of your body’s muscles, so as a cyclist, you need to continuously supply nutrition in a format your digestive tract can turn into energy.

Your body needs to be continuously supplied with energy during physical activity to extend performance and minimize fatigue. The more effectively you supply nutrients, the more effectively your body performs. This is particularly critical for cycling, where athletes put out more watts of power over a longer period of time than virtually any other sport.

Hydration liquids and tablets to keep your body cool and working efficiently. Hydration products are among the most effective ways to replace minerals and salts during activity to prevent onset of cramping. Drinks should be isotonic (less concentrated than blood plasma) for fastest-possible absorption, and relatively low in sugars. For cyclists who prefer to drink water, tablets can contain concentrated doses of electrolytes and are easily handled and consumed, even during competition.

Recovery is the other half of exercise. It’s as important as the workout or competition itself, and proper recovery starts as soon as your heart rate begins to drop. Properly formulated recovery products contain rapid-absorbing carbohydrates to recharge glycogen levels, branch chain amino acids to restore muscle tone and mass, and glutamine to counteract fatigue and increase the immune system’s defense mechanisms.

Quality

vs. Quantity

Charlie Livermore, founder of Endurance Performance Training Center, explores the ongoing debate between cyclists and triathletes on the virtues of quality versus quantity of training for cycling performance

120 VELTECmagazine

There is an ongoing debate between cyclists and triathletes on the virtues of quality versus quantity of training for cycling performance. I’ve heard good arguments on both sides of this issue and conclude that both have their place in the overall scheme of training. What’s not clear, and leads to misunderstanding around this topic, is what we mean by quality and quantity. From what I can tell, the perception out there is that quality is the opposite of quantity. Quality seems to represent a decrease in training volume with an increase in intensity and focus on the day’s specific workout, and quantity is all about time on the bike logging in long moderate to easy rides. If these definitions are right then it is theoretically impossible to do a high quality, high quantity training session or block…right? I don’t think so. My view is that quality is not about the overall volume or intensity of a training ride. To me quality training is simply a highly focused execution of a good training plan. The better an athlete complies with the day’s planned prescription the higher the quality regardless of whether it’s a short intense interval day or a long slow endurance ride. Let’s break this down into pieces to take a closer look at each of the factors that lead to quality training.

Training Vs. Riding A good place to start here is to agree on what training means. I often use the training vs. riding example to bring this point home. Training is a planned event that has very specific structure and intent. Riding, on the other hand, is a social event that has no real structure or limits and is easily influenced by the temptation to compete. A group ride can sometimes serve as or be a part of a training structure but when the plan calls for specific drills, intervals or intensity ranges, you must make sure that you choose the environment that will best suit your plan.

The Training Plan Now that you’re ready to train and not just go out for a ride you can benefit from a well designed training plan. The basic tenet of a training plan is to put a specific structure in place that will combine periods of progressive overloads of stress with recovery while taking into consideration the athlete’s experience, fitness level, personal goals and lifestyle. Without a plan you will probably end up doing the same routine every week and end up right where you started or worse, physically or mentally broken down from lack of variety and rest. Interestingly enough, my experience with most cyclists, pros to beginners is that getting them to comply with a rest or easy day on the bike is my biggest challenge as a coach. One of my favorite sayings, “if you go to hard on the easy days you’ll end up going to easy on the hard days” summarizes what the most cyclists without a plan end up doing most of the time. If you’ve bought in to the fact that quality is the perfect execution of a good training plan, you’re ready to plan your training and are committed to following your plan. Let’s take a moment to look briefly at what training does so we can understand how to add quality to every session.

What Does Training Do? When your body experiences an amount of stress beyond what it is used to it will begin adapting to be better prepared to respond to that stress in the future. Consistent repeated bouts of stress are needed in order for the adaption to eventually take place. Consistent and precise application of stress followed by periods of rest and recovery is the quickest pathway to adaptations that improve cycling performance. The primary adaptation we are looking for in cycling is an increase in aerobic capacity. When you train your cells adapt to improve aerobic muscle functions by increasing the number of mitochondria and contractile elements resulting in an increase in strength and endurance.

122 VELTECmagazine

At the same time we improve the ability of the body to provide oxygen and fuel to the cell by developing improved heart function and blood flow to the working muscle. Proper training of all of these capacities contribute to an improved aerobic capacity. Training the cellular system increases your muscle’s capacity to do work. Programming your nervous system to pedal correctly increases your muscle’s energy efficiency. At its maximum muscle energy efficiency can reach about 50%. This means that only 50% of the energy your muscles generate can be used for mechanical energy or in this context pedaling. Pedaling efficiencies of trained cyclist are measured to be in the 16-22% range. The primary culprit accounting for this discrepancy is inefficiency associated with the direction the muscle contractile force is applied to the pedal. Learning how to efficiently transmit the workload of your well trained muscles on to the pedals will result in significant performance improvements. A focus on achieving both cellular and nervous system adaptations adds quality to every training session.

Customize For Quality Personalizing or tailoring your training program specific to your needs requires a thorough understanding of your current fitness level, the demands of your event and your lifestyle. Together these factors must be considered in order to prescribe the right dosage and frequency of stress and recovery that will keep your body adapting and in a healthy state. To maximize the benefits of your training time, the stress has to be hard enough to stimulate an adaptive response but not so hard that it causes your organism to run for cover for fear of death. Physiological assessments are the best way to assess your fitness and establish training intensity zones. If you don’t have access to a good lab, field tests, if done right are the next best thing. Without accurate training intensity zones you’re basically guessing at the amount of stress you’re putting your body through. A good assessment customizes the training loads specific to your current level. Regular assessments ensure that your training loads continue to represent your improved fitness level and keep you from that old nemesis, the plateau! On the mechanical side of the equation, a bike fit and pedal stroke analysis will determine how well

Scott Nydam and Jackson Stewart of BMC (on the podium at the 2008 Tour of California) are both coached by Livermore

positioned you are on your bike and assess your pedaling efficiency. It’s necessary to understand what a good pedal stroke looks and feels like before you go out and program your body to do it right. Customizing your training structure with fitness and biomechanical assessments vastly increases the quality of your plan.

Now It’s Up To You You’re ready to hit the road. You have a coach who’s put together a great plan based on the results of a fitness assessment and an extensive interview and you’re in the perfect position on your bike and well versed on the drills to re-program your pedal stroke. Now it’s up to you to decide if this is going to be a quality day or not. If so you are committed to nailing every piece of the plan every time. You’ll stick to the times and intensities and work on improving your pedaling efficiency in every session. Regardless of whether the training is 6 hours or 2, you are now doing quality focused training. Cycle Studio—Ecycling, one of Livermore’s programs, incorporates all aspects of quality training
