Now in our 40th year, we at Vendome are looking back through our history to assess why we, a small, independent publisher, have been able to adapt, survive, and grow. Though there are many possible explanations, there is only one plausible answer, which is that since our first year, Vendome has never compromised on demanding the highest quality from its authors, photographers, designers, and printers. It is this insistence on quality, we believe, that sets Vendome apart from other publishers and that has attracted the support and devotion of generations of book buyers. How do we determine whether a proposed project would be appropriate for our list? There are some givens, to be sure: the quality of the photography, the project’s originality, and a clearly written text. But there are many other considerations as well, including how best to design and produce the book, how to price it, and how to market it to reach the maximum audience. And there is still another variable – one that does not show up on budgets or marketing plans – that is possibly the most important criterion: how well will the author or photographer fit into what we call the ‘Vendome family‘? Will they understand that because we publish a maximum of fifteen titles per year, we develop close relationships with our authors and photographers and welcome their participation throughout the publishing process? We believe that this collaboration results in better books and that every one of the titles offered in our 2020 list reflects our publishing principles. Thank you for encouraging us in this mission, and welcome to our 2020 program.

A refreshing antidote to the contrived nature of much contemporary interior design, the textiles and decoration of Nathalie Farman-Farma have gained a devoted following among celebrity and socialite clients for their folkloric charm and romantic exuberance. Farman-Farma’s townhouse and studio in London and her family homes in Connecticut and Lake Tahoe feature in this captivating volume, forming the backdrop for her Décors Barbares range of fabrics, as well as her vast collection of antique textiles, costumes and jewellery. Vogue has called Farman-Farma ‘the textile designer you need to know’. Sean Scherer’s Kabinett & Kammer Creating Authentic Interiors Sean Scherer Photography by William Abranowicz Artist and collector Sean Scherer shares his secrets on applying the principles of two‑dimensional art to interior design  Scherer’s interiors have been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Elle Decor and The World of Interiors, among others  His store, Kabinett & Kammer – a contemporary curiosity shop of antiques, natural wonders and art in upstate New York – is a favourite resource among dealers

14

Kabinett & Kammer is equally a celebration and a practical guide to both collecting and showing how lively design can integrate disparate objects from the past into beautifully layered ensembles. Sean Scherer’s interiors feature vintage display cabinets housing discarded collections of whittled songbirds, a plethora of stunning 19th-century maps and school teaching aids, semi-tropical ferns in cast-iron planters, mysterious industrial apparatuses displayed against eye-catching colours, and photomurals. The effect is a supercharged nod to American Gothic heightened by Scherer’s sophisticated palette and sense of proportion. His interior language speaks with a calm authority coupled with a zest for life, offering invaluable lessons for composing signature, comfortable interiors. Each photograph by leading photographer William Abranowicz is a masterclass on such topics as colour and texture, focal points and room size. Sean Scherer studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and New York‘s Whitney Museum of American Art, exhibiting his work extensively throughout North America and Europe. He moved from New York to the Catskills in 2002, opening Kabinett & Kammer shortly after, and is Professor of Art at SUNY Oneonta. William Abranowicz has been a photographer for more than 40 years. His work is in collections throughout the world and has appeared in nearly every major publication in the United States, Europe and Asia. His recent books include American Originals: Creative Interiors and Natural Elegance: Luxurious Mountain Living.

From the rocky coast of Maine to the sandy beaches of the Hamptons, from Nantucket to Newport, from Fire Island to Fishers Island, and from Martha’s Vineyard to Provincetown, summer houses are as varied in style as the people who take to the beach as soon as the temperature climbs. In this lushly illustrated book, author Jennifer Ash Rudick has sought out some twenty-five of the best. She invites us into a minimally decorated, lsamu Noguchi-designed home in Northeast Harbor and Apple Parrish Bartlett’s cosily decorated house in Dark Harbor, Maine. We imagine relaxing in a comfortably cushioned rattan chair on the sun porch of a Nantucket house designed by Tom Scheerer, taking in the view of Long Island Sound through the glass curtain wall of a sleek house on Fishers Island, and feeling snugly cosseted in a tiny Provincetown cottage. All we need to do is settle back, kick off our shoes, and let the sun-kissed pages of Summer to Summer wash over us … Jennifer Ash Rudick is the author of Palm Beach Chic, Out East: Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons, and City of Angels: Houses and Gardens of Los Angeles. A contributing editor to Veranda magazine, she also writes for other national publications and, with Maysles Films, produced the Emmy-nominated documentary Iris. Markham Roberts Notes on Decorating Markham Roberts Photography by Nelson Hancock Foreword by Alison Levasseur More thoughts on decorating from this versatile and accomplished interior designer, illustrated with his latest projects  Roberts has been named in the AD 100 list of top designers annually since 2014

20

Called a ‘master of timeless American style’ by Vogue, Markham Roberts is renowned for his boundless creativity and ability to work in a wide range of styles. In this, his second book, he examines his working method, identifying the key elements of a project and explaining how he addresses them. He begins with his top priority – taking into account his clients’ point of view by interpreting their needs and reflecting their style, rather than imposing his own vision. In the process, he helps them focus and edit, respecting their wishes while making it work. Other elements include establishing a sense of place, layering and embellishing to make spaces more personal and interesting, acknowledging the need for practicality in the choice of materials, and doing the unexpected, from upholstering walls to mixing disparate materials and styles of furniture. Throughout, specially commissioned photographs of his latest projects illustrate his solutions to the challenges each of the elements pose. Concluding with a single project encompassing all elements, this book a must-have resource for anyone interested in interior design. Markham Roberts trained with renowned decorator Mark Hampton before opening his own firm in 1997. Since then, he has earned a reputation as one of the top decorators of his generation, his work featuring in leading international publications such as AD, Vogue, Town & Country and The New York Times. Alison Levasseur is the Editorial Development Manager at AD. Nelson Hancock works as a photographer, curator, and professor of photography and cultural anthropology.

Renowned photographer Miguel FloresVianna’s visual diary of his travels through fourteen countries on five continents

26

Miguel Flores-Vianna’s childhood in Argentina was marked by two constants that he believes shaped the life he chose to lead: travel and books. Perhaps because the country feels like it is located at the end of the world, most Argentines are born with a good dose of wanderlust, and Flores-Vianna had a higher dose than normal. Books helped him discover places both literally and figuratively, creating romantic visions of lands he wanted to visit, and he has gone on to document his peripatetic life with his camera, recording places as he feels they should be rather than as they are. In this irresistible volume, Flores-Vianna shares some 250 of his favourite images taken all over Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas – captured only with his phone – in the hope that viewers, seeing the world through his eyes, will learn to love these most wondrous of places as much as he does. 250 colour illustrations / 20.3 x 25.4 cm 288 pages / HB with jacket ISBN 978-0-86565-367-2 September 2019 / £30.00

Beige is Not a Color The Full-Spectrum World of Carlos Mota

Edited by Celia Forner Foreword by Gianluca Longo

Carlos Mota

Sleep beautifully: be inspired by hundreds of the most stylish, iconic and simply fabulous beds and bedrooms ever designed

In this colour-saturated volume, creative consultant and style editor Carlos Mota celebrates multi-hued manifestations of beauty, creativity, and individuality all over the world

In our bedrooms, we take leave of our daily woes. Far from the bustle of the kitchen, the sociability of the living room or the indulgence of the dining room, this part of the home is reserved for intimacy, romance, and dreaming. Bedtime: Inspirational Beds, Bedrooms and Boudoirs is an inspiring, visual journey into the sleepiest, yet most salacious, room of the house. Celia Forner whisks you through the bedrooms of queens and emperors, designers and decorators, today’s most exclusive homes, and even the most evocative fictional boudoirs from stage and screen. Designers and clients alike will find fresh inspiration in this king-size source book, which shows astonishing breadth of vision in collating more beds and bedrooms than one could possibly dream of, and is an invaluable addition to any design collection.

Bland is anathema to Carlos Mota. As he travels the world – from Lisbon to Tangier, New York to Paris, India to Santo Domingo – producing feature stories and ad campaigns for countless publications and companies, he exults in every spark of originality and creativity he sees. Fortunately for us, he not only documents his sightings with his camera but also collects images by a Who's Who of interiors and architectural photographers. In this volume, he has culled some 280 of his favourite images, all wholly different but sharing one quality: the beauty of colour, both literally and figuratively. Interiors, table settings, fabric swatches, tiles, spices, sculptures … whatever captures his discerning eye. Peppered with quotes about colour and beauty by a host of designers, Beige is Not a Color is the antithesis of bland and as aspirational as it is inspirational.

He has journeyed through four continents to capture an extraordinary group of fashion designers, landscape architects, artists and art historians, potters and interior designers, wherever they live – in country cottages, beach bungalows, canal-side lofts and East Village apartments, as well as assorted estancias, chateaux and palazzi. Dior and his Decorators Victor Grandpierre, Georges Geffroy, and The New Look

The Gardens of Bunny Mellon Linda Jane Holden

Maureen Footer

Introduction by Sir Peter Crane

Foreword by Hamish Bowles

Photography by Roger Foley

The first exploration of the two decorators who worked closely with Christian Dior and translated the spirit of the New Look into interior design

The first study of the gardens and landscapes of Bunny Mellon, written by a leading specialist, illustrated with new and archival photography

Like the unabashedly luxurious fashions of Dior’s New Look, which debuted in 1947, the interior designs of Victor Grandpierre and Georges Geffroy infused a war-weary world with a sumptuous new aesthetic – a melding of the refined traditions of the past with a wholly modern sense of elegance. Here, author Maureen Footer recounts the lives and work of this influential trio, illustrated with a trove of evocative vintage photographs. Grandpierre designed Dior’s first couture house, creating not only the elegantly restrained look of the salons but also the template for the Dior brand, including typeface, logo and packaging. After the couturier’s untimely death in 1957, Grandpierre and Geffroy went on to design salons for other couturiers, as well as homes for the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Marcel Rochas, Gloria Guinness, Daisy Fellowes and Maria Callas.

Throughout her long and storied life, Rachel ‘Bunny‘ Mellon’s greatest passion was garden design. She and her husband Paul Mellon, one of the wealthiest men in America, maintained homes in New York, Cape Cod, Nantucket, Antigua and Upperville, Virginia, and she designed the gardens at all of them. She also designed gardens for some of her dearest friends, including the Rose Garden and the East Garden at the White House, at the request of President Kennedy, and the gardens of couturier Hubert de Givenchy. All are featured in this volume, illustrated with Mellon’s own garden plans, sketches and watercolours, as well as with archival photographs and specially commissioned photographs of Oak Spring, the Mellon estate in Upperville. Author Linda Holden’s text is based on extensive interviews with Mellon before her death in 2014.
