"It is a historical time to save the planet Earth and save the human species."

During her speech, following the signing of the Paris Agreement, the Foreign Minister said that "it is a historical time to save planet Earth and save the human species." Rodriguez showed concern for small island states, which live a real and constant threat from the rising sea level, which means that some island nations can be completely submerged. On behalf of the homeland of Bolivar, the chancellor of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, on Friday signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change at the UN headquarters in New York City. Moreover, the Venezuelan foreign minister said that it is necessary to change the capitalist model that promotes the destruction of planet Earth, and with it, of the human species, as Hugo Chavez, leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, expressed in the Copenhagen Summit, in 2009: "Do not change the climate, let's change the system!”

Venezuela assumes temporary precidency of UNASUR with commitment to strengthen regional unity Venezuela assumed the temporary presidency of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) with a commitment to strengthen regional unity against the attacks on Latin American democracies promoted by conservative sectors within and outside the southern hemisphere, said the Minister for Foreign Affairs Delcy RodrĂguez. "From Venezuela we ratify this historic project", expressed in the transmission of Telesur, when referring to the regional bloc as a mechanism that strengthens the unity and integration of Latin America promoted by the liberators of the continent. "From the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, today we begin the exercise of this temporary presidency, we come laden with the consciousness of our liberators, our independence parents and also the soul and heart of our people to continue walking together and holding hands facing all threats, all hazards and all the difficulties that may arise on our countries," said Rodriguez, from the headquarters of UNASUR, in the middle of the world, in Quito, Ecuador, where the delivery of the temporary presidency was handed to Venezuela, from Uruguay. The Chancellor said that with the strength and will of the people and governments of the region the threats from media corporations and financial powers that carry out unconventional forms of warfare to generate destabilization will be confronted. Therefore, she said that the challenge of the fraternal countries is to shelter themselves from those threats which seek to undermine governments, such as in Brazil against President Dilma Rousseff and in Venezuela against President NicolĂĄs Maduro. She also highlighted from the UNASUR headquaters that an institutional framework aimed at channeling fundamentals for the progress of nations which she referred to as a fortress for the block has been achieved.

"We have gradually built an institutional framework to address our issues, to channel the vital issues of our nations," she said. In this regard, she added that one of the greatest achievements of the union is to have achieved political sovereignty. "We do not look north anymore, our North is the South," she said. In her speech, the chancellor sent a message of solidarity to the people of Ecuador who last Saturday suffered a 7.8 strong earthquake that left 602 dead, more than 12,000 injured and heavy losses for Ecuador, estimated at 3,000 million dollars. Venezuela is the eighth country to assume the temporary presidency of UNASUR, a responsibility that is designated alphabetically, including the presidencies exercised before by bloc countries in the former South American Community of Nations founded in Peru in 2004. UNASUR is made up of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Promoting the Unknown about Africa Sh120m from soybeans Fund up for grabs

The challenge aims to promote soybean farming and marketing across nine East and Southern Africa countries.

A farmer holds on display soy beans at a farm in Sachangwaan. A regional company has rolled out grants to promote soybean farming and marketing across nine countries in east and southern Africa. FoodTrade East and Southern Africa launched the Soybean Challenge Fund targeting private sector organisations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. Successful applicants are entitled to grants ranging between £250,000 (Sh37.5 million) and £800,000 (Sh120 million) per proposal, the company said. The grants aim at stimulating increased production and value addition of soybeans in east and southern Africa, which will lead into increased availability of livestock farming inputs, secured livelihoods for small-scale soybean farmers, improved supply of soybean crops and processed products. The call for proposals is already live on the FoodTrade ESA website and applications will be accepted until May 6. This will be followed by verification, due diligence and inception stages, with disbursement of funds expected to commence from the fourth quarter.

“Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate evidence of support to women and youth, as well as collaboration with farmer organisations, input suppliers, agriculture extension service providers, credit providers and other providers working to increase soybean production,” said Marc Van Uytvanck, the team leader of the FoodTrade ESA programme. The Soybean Challenge Fund is expected to last for 18 months. The private sector companies, along with their partners, will be expected to provide smallholders farmers with an off-taker market for soybean produce at a fair price, adequate input supply, as well as agriculture extension and support services. A wide number of projects such as farmer mobilisation, processing and value addition, bulking and aggregation storage mechanisms, marketing as well as investments aimed at increasing the production of soybean at the farmer level are eligible for the funding. Van Uytvanck said by working with the private sector, they aim to promote the participation of small-scale farmers in the production and marketing of produce. www.nation.co.ke/business 3
