Venezuela's system for access to medicines has been implemented by WHO For the registry, patients should only present their identity card and a valid prescription (for not more than six months), at any of the 6,700 pharmacies spread across the country, which gradually have joined the SIAMED.
Caracas, 19 May. AVN.Venezuelan Integral System for Access to Medicines (SIAMED), launched by the Ministry for Health on April 23 to register people with chronic, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and ensure timely access to medicines, is a model scheme developed in 1985, still in use, with technological advances, by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Besides Venezuela, other Latin American countries such as Dominican Republic, Peru, Chile, Cuba and Colombia have implemented similar automated systems for recording and management of medicines a press release from the Ministry of Health says. Specifically in Venezuela, the SIAMED was launched to reinforce the fight against economic war, waged by right-wing business sectors through hoarding, speculation and s muggled products such as food and medicines since 2013. Through the system, patients suffering from chronic, non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and other neurological-related diseases may register online, apply for the medicine, know the time of delivery to pharmacies and collect medicines with the guarantee of having the treatment they need in a timely manner.
According to the latest report by the Minister for Health, Henry Ventura, last Friday, almost 90 000 people had registered in the system. The top health authority in the country explained that this method should not only ensure the existence of such drugs, but also show the actual demand for these drugs and prevent smuggling. In this regard, Ventura stressed on several occasions that the system will show the true demand for medicines in the country, considering that in Venezuela 729 million units of medicines are consumed per year, even when the population is 30 million, a figure that exceeds the number of drugs consumed in other most populous nations like Brazil, which has more than 200 million people. Once registered, users will receive, as a second step, a text message through the telephone number they gave to the system and, ultimately, by this means, SIAMED will inform when the medicine reaches the pharmacy. The last step will be to collect the medicine at the pharmacy chosen by the user. For pharmaceutical establishments that do not have Internet access available, a situational room was installed at the headquarters of the Ministry for Health, in Caracas, for users to make their requests by telephone.
