WELCOME TO ROMA

The Italian branch of IAML and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with its Multimedia Library have the great pleasure in welcoming you in Roma, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, from 3rd to 8th July 2016, to join the 65th Congress of IAML. Italy and IAML shared a long history: the foundation of IAML was discussed in Firenze (1949) and IAML conferences were held in Milano (1963), Bologna (1972), Como (1984), Perugia (1996) and Napoli (2008). This is the first time that IAML meets in Roma, the Eternal City. Moreover it is the first time since decades that IAML is hosted by a concert organization, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, one of the oldest musical institutions in the world, uniting an academic body with a Symphonic Orchestra and Chorus, now active at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, one of the most relevant Italian centers for music, inaugurated in 2002. Officially founded in 1585, the Accademia has evolved from an organization of largely “local musicians to a modern academy, formed by one hundred of the most illustrious exponents of culture and music, and a symphonic concert organization of international repute; it carries out also professional musical training. Therefore its Multimedia Library preserves an extremely rich historical music heritage, the institutional archive and is strictly related to the Museum of music instruments. We wish you a wonderful week in Roma, improving your professional contacts, enjoing the program rich of stimulating presentations, interesting exhibitions, concerts and fascinating tours on Wednesday afternoon.

WILKOMMEN IN ROM

A GLIMPSE INTO THE ARCHIVIO STORICO RICORDI Exhibition Museum of Musical Instruments Opening hours Sunday 3 July: from 13:00 / Monday 4 July - Friday 8 July: 8:30–18:30 Except on Wednesday 6 July: 8:30–14:00 Ricordi is synonymous with great music: the artists that the publisher Ricordi has promoted over more than two centuries of activity left a profound mark on the world of opera, classical instrumental and pop. Today you can retrace this fascinating story through the treasures of the Archivio Storico Ricordi, the most important private music collection in the world: the great artists who have left an indelible mark in the musical culture, the immortal works of geniuses such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, the daring explorations of contemporary composers. Founded in 1808, it represents the historic legacy of the Ricordi publishing house, which was acquired in 1994 by the German media group Bertelsmann which, henceforth, ensures its conservation and cultural development. The extraordinary importance of the Archivio lays in the variety of its documents, which offer a broad comprehensive reflection of Italian culture, industry and society. The Archive, housed within the Palazzo di Brera in Milan, collects manuscript scores, letters by composers, librettists and singers, costume and set designs, librettos, historical photographs and Art Nouveau posters. The exhibited documents offer important information not only related strictly to musical activity, but also to the pictorial, scenographic and decorative arts, to the publishing company and to the theatre world.
