never go home, because Mexico was never our home; we were just unfortunates to be born in a geographical/political warzone, at the mercy of everyone. We have no real home, and the semi-invisible ghost-like life that we lead in this country is criminalized at every turn. I have survived 33 years in a country that has denied me the human right to pursue life, liberty and happiness. I can’t get a job legally, I can’t get into college legally, I can’t vote, I can’t call the cops. I am easily reduced by politicians and fear mongers to a statistical anomaly, a political talking point, a savage criminal, a pathetic scapegoat. Periodically I am hunted, rounded up, arrested and thrown into cages, made a prisoner of a society that I have served faithfully all my adulthood. In this schizophrenic and hypocritical land of laws (for some) I must have legal “papers” to breathe freedom openly. Perversely, in order to have legal “papers,” I must somehow wipe away all of my 33 years of illegal existence in this country and return to a foreign and foreboding Mexico and pray for celestial intervention that I live long enough to complete the impossibly arduous process of legal immigration and re-entry into the United States, my estranged home of 33 years. How surreal is that? Today worldwide there are millions of migrants (I am one of them) traversing the globe seeking out a country that will provide the peace, compassion, love and refuge from the violence, starvation, war, hatred and persecution that we are all desperately trying to escape. The journey that each and every one of us migrants takes is when all other options have been exhausted and there is no other choice, “al camino o muerte!” the road or death. That is what my mother did, that is why she smuggled me into this country 33 years ago, and that is why I am alive today, this week to celebrate my 40th birthday. One day before I die I hope that this country, my home, my country, will see the tragic error of its current inhumane immigration policies and transform itself back to the world’s beacon and a refuge for those persecuted and huddled migrant masses that yearn to be free.

I, like many of my immigrant brothers and sisters, live in constant dread and panic fearing that today in this current black-hearted hole that we call America our day will come and we will be caught, arrested, jailed and eventually deported to some God forsaken part of Mexico or Central America that we fear will lead to a death, that few will mourn. undocumented immigrant. In today’s Trump America, make no mistake, I am a criminal, an illegal alien that must be hunted down and caged. I have lived in the cold and heartless shadows of this country for over 33 years; where Father Gregory Boyle reminds us, “on the periphery of humanity, where the pain, suffering and need is the greatest.” The United States, then, has been my purgatory, a place that I desperately want to call home, but at every turn I am denied. I was smuggled into this country when I was about 7 years old, a child, guilty only of being born to a single mother in desperate need to find a way of keeping her family from starvation and daily horrific violence in her native Mexico. erman researchers are reaching out to local news outlets throughout the United States in the hopes of contacting living relatives of World War II American soldiers who were aboard planes that crashed at sites currently being uncovered in Germany. A team of researchers have located the crash site of an American B-17 Bomber, named “Strictly GI” by the crew, that was shot down by German anti-aircraft guns on Sept. 9, 1944, in a forested area outside the German village of Speyerdorf. One of the U.S. Air Force crewmembers lived in Ventura and the German researchers are trying to locate his family. “His name was 2nd Lieutenant Dale W. Burkhead,” said Erik Wieman, founder of the Historical Research Community Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, the team that found the site. The goal is to locate the family of the crew of downed planes, who perhaps might participate in the unveiling of memorial stones the team erects at the crash sites. “He was the co-pilot aboard the plane . . . from Spokane, Washington.” His last listed address with the military was a P.O. Box in Ventura. His USAAF Service number was 0-768434. The team’s records indicated Burkhead survived the crash and was held as a prisoner of war by the Nazi’s until the end of the war, when he was then released. His wife’s name was Doloris. Wieman still wants to connect with the families of crash survivors so that they can participate in the unveiling of the memorial. This site was located with the help of an 80-year-old local man who was a forest worker after the war. He remembers the plane, although the site looks much different today. Trees planted right after the war are now mature. Originally from the Netherlands, Wieman began as

a volunteer researching Roman and Celtic historical sites in the early 1980s. He served in the Danish Royal Marines, and later married a German woman and moved to Germany. During his search for those sites he began finding plane parts. “The aircraft, my grandfather in the Netherlands always told me about, crossing Holland to bomb Germany during five years of occupation by the Germans. My grandfather was in Rotterdam when it was bombed by the Germans in 1940, and he always thought of them boys way up in the sky, heading for Germany,” said Wieman. “The coincidence is, I work at the base in Ludwigshafen, the main target of this aircraft,” he said. Historical records show Strictly GI was on a mission to bomb that city. Wieman wants to give something back, and finding and documenting these crash sites and notifying the families of the airmen is part of that. “Many of them paid the highest price and died for our freedom.” Since 2015 Wieman and his fellow team members have focused on WW2 aircraft, which is getting harder as witnesses are passing away. Right now they know of 20 crash sites. They comb the area with metal detectors and screens, sifting for pieces of the planes and sometimes exploded ammunition. They try to locate pieces that have some identifying information, such as a serial number, and then comb through military records to find a match. “These forgotten sites are not visible anymore. We are going to change that.” Wieman said that since 2016 his team has been placing a stone memorial on crash sites every year and hopes to unveil the fourth stone at this site. They invite the families, many of which don’t know what happened. Sometimes all they know is that their family member died in Germany. “What exactly happened is usually not known,” said Wieman. “Now they can find closure.” If you have information about family members of Dale W. of press deadline, the remains of 33 people have been recovered and the search continues for the final victim following a tragic fire that occurred aboard a 75-foot chartered diving boat in the predawn hours of Monday, Sept. 2. At the time of the fire the vessel was anchored 20 yards off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, about 35 miles from the Oxnard coast. Five crew members, the only survivors of the incident, were sleeping above deck and leapt into the ocean to escape the burning vessel. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation There were 39 people aboard Con-

crews arrived, Grape Escape, a privately owned boat that had been in the area, had rescued five people from the water. People aboard Grape Escape reported hearing explosions; officials have speculated that these were caused by diving or propane tanks. lder adults seem to be getting younger and younger these days, with people like 73-yearold Denny Aten, of Moorpark, who plays Pickleball several days a week along with his teammate, Michael Jantzen, 69, of Newbury Park. As one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, Pickleball tends to attract older players because the game offers aerobic exercise without much risk of injury, and may also ward off depression, according to new studies on the benefits of the game. Aten’s reasons for playing are simple. “It’s a blast, it’s very competitive and very fun,” he said one recent morning after a game at Tierra Rejada Park in Moorpark. “It helps you mentally,” he added, joking, “you gotta be able to duck so the ball doesn’t hit you in the face.” Aten and Jantzen will be among this year’s competitors at the 2019 Moorpark Senior Games, an Olympicstyle event in which participants will receive gold, silver and bronze medals in their sport of choice. This year’s games, expected to draw about 200 people from all over Ventura County, will include basketball key shots, bingo, bocce ball, bowling, darts, golf, horseshoes, mah jongg, Pickleball, pinochle, poker, table

tennis, tennis and Wii bowling. The biannual event, open to folks 55 and older, brought in 170 players in 2017, and is hoped to attract more signups this year, said Wendy Hibner, supervisor of the Moorpark Active Adult Center, presenter of the Moorpark Senior Games. “You don’t have to be an athlete,” Hibner said. “There’s an event for everybody.” “Friendly competition” The Moorpark Senior Games will take place Sept. 6-Oct. 4. Bingo, darts, Mah Jongg, pinochle, poker, table tennis and Wii bowling will be featured at the Moorpark Active Adult Center, while Bocce ball and Pickleball players will compete at Tierra Rejada Park. A poker walk will take place at Poindexter Park. Tennis and basketball key shots will be showcased at Arroyo Vista Recreation Center in Moorpark. In Simi Valley, there will be golf at Sinaloa Golf Course and bowling at Harley’s Bowl. The games are all about “the competitive spirit and friendly competition,” Hibner noted. “But it also encourages people that might be new to retirement that want to get out and interact with other people in the community. It’s a good way for them to test the waters . . . and become active.” Aside from providing a healthy way to enjoy sports together, the individual events at the games “build

VCREPORTER.COM camaraderie and lasting friendships,” said Moorpark Mayor Janice Parvin. “And if you watch them compete, you realize it’s a really healthy competition . . . it’s fun to watch.” All the games as well as the opening (Sept. 6) and closing (Oct. 4) ceremonies — the latter of which will feature medals being presented to the winners — will be open to the public. No matter what age you are, “it’s a special moment to win a medal in your sport, and when they have the ceremony, they razz each other — that’s my favorite part,” Parvin said. “They’re all friends so it’s fun to see them compete in a really healthy way. And they are great athletes. Unless people go and watch them, they don’t understand what great athletes they are.” “It’s addicting” Pickleball in particular is considered a great athletic sport for older adults, because a lot of baby boomers came from tennis or basketball, said Moorpark resident Kim Marlatt, 62, who is signing up Pickleball players for the Moorpark Senior Games. Simply put, Pickleball is a paddle sport played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes that combines the elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and is typically played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. “Once they play it, they love it,” said Marlatt. “It’s addicting. You want to play it all the time. Even if you’re a beginner it’s fun.” When Marlatt fell in love with Pickleball, she played three times a week, “and I didn’t have any experience. I played with these guys that were way over my head and they played with me until I got better. I play with a bunch of nice people and we’ve become friends. So it’s not just physical, it’s mental and social.” Kirk Smith, 65, of Camarillo, agrees. “It’s not only good exercise, there’s good camaraderie, too.” This year, he and his wife, Terri, will play the sport at the Moorpark Senior Games, where he will compete in the advanced division after playing Pickleball for only six months. “I’m an old tennis player and some of those skills transferred over,” said Smith, adding, “It seems to be a very fast growing sport, especially for seniors.” For 70-year-old Kazzy Nishida, who is playing Pickleball at the Moorpark Senior Games, “I quit playing pingpong and switched to Pickleball.”

Atmosphere for active adults The Moorpark Senior Games create “a fun, if not competitive, atmosphere for our active adults,” said Moorpark City Councilmember David Pollock. “Active lifestyles have proven to be one of the biggest keys to a longer and healthier life,” emphasized Pollock, noting that the games presented by the Moorpark Active Adult Center show Moorpark’s commitment to being a H.E.A.L. City. The Healthy Eating Active Living (H.E.A.L.) Cities Campaign helps harness the power of local governments to advance health equity through resolutions with policy goals for general plans, land use, healthy food access and work site wellness. As part of its resolution as a H.E.A.L. City, Moorpark has chosen to be a lead-

er in healthy lifestyle options, and continues to provide a variety of physical activities for all ages, including those offered at the Moorpark Senior Games. This biannual event is significant because it encourages active adults to exercise and remain physically and mentally fit, said Gilbert Lozano, the center’s recreation coordinator. Plus, older adults will have the opportunity to compete against “some of the best that Moorpark and surrounding areas have to offer.” He firmly believes the senior population needs to stay active and have fun to stay young, further adding that studies have proven when seniors are active, they tend to live longer. “It is nice to have this competition, but we are here to promote healthy living (rather) than the competition aspect of the games,” Lozano said. “At the end of the day, we encourage good sportsmanship, and that is demonstrated through all of our events.” While it’s great to see competitors win, “I get a kick seeing all of the new relationships that are built in these few days — this camaraderie really promotes what we are here for, and that is to have a good time while competing for gold,” Lozano added. “It is really special to see our population embrace everyone; that special feeling really helps them to stay young. We can learn a thing or two from these competitors.” ♦

a Mormon growing up in small-town Idaho, Ryan Hamilton found escape in comedy. He watched the classic standup series Evening at the Improv regularly, read Gary Larson’s “Far Side” cartoons and fell in love with Steve Martin’s work early. That attention to the art form has paid off richly, as Hamilton has become a regular opening act on Jerry Seinfeld’s tours in addition to having his own one-hour Netflix comedy special called Happy Face. He will perform this Saturday at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center Thousand Oaks (formerly the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza) as part of a national tour.

“I was in a very small town, with not a lot of people going into showbiz or comedy clubs around,” Hamilton recalls. “I was always interested in being funny and wanted to be a humor columnist like Dave Barry, and loved reading him every week. We didn’t have a school paper so I started writing in the local county paper every week.” “The local NBC affiliate asked me to shoot and edit high school sports for them and I tried to make it funny,” adds Hamilton. “I always tried to do kind of funny things, and was drawn to standup. I was a broadcast journalism major in college, and did standup as remotes for my college radio show. That was the first time I did standup. We’d set up in a pizza place, and do a live audience show.” Hamilton has racked up a string of impressive kudos, including being named one of Rolling Stone’s “Five Comics to Watch.” His recent appearances include The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan, and opening spots for Seinfeld and Gad Elmelah at Carnegie Hall. The 43-year-old comic started perfor ming in Salt Lake City while studying public relations at Brigham Young University. He also came up through the Seattle and Boston comedy scenes and won the Sierra Mist “America’s Next Great Comic” search in 2005 before joining their national tour. In 2011, Hamilton won The Great American Comedy Festival, held every June at the Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk, Neb. He has also been a regular performer at the Just for Laughs Comedy festivals, including Montreal and Sydney, and was a two-time semi-finalist on the NBC comedy competition series Last Comic Standing. Through it all, his values have helped him

build a thriving career while being known as one of the best clean comics in the business. “It always was where I wanted to be, where I fit,” says Hamilton. “It doesn’t work for me otherwise. I respect comedy across the spectrum, but those were the comedians I was drawn to — broad, observational comedians for some reason.” “Creative constraints pushed me in an interesting direction,” he adds. “I don’t feel I changed myself to be clean; I found I was rusty. It was where I was drawn anyway and where I feel most comfortable.” That approach made him a perfect fit for Seinfeld, and Hamilton feels he’s already learned a lot from the comedy master. “It’s an amazing opportunity, a couple of years working together once in a while,” says Hamilton. “He’s such a master and I learned about his work ethic, how diligent he is to this day. He’s accomplished so much but still working consistently, writing and turning out new stuff. “The way he runs his life, he has a very happy joyful life, but he loves working and it brings him a lot of joy,” he continues. “It brings him a nice balance, and all of that has been great. The importance he puts on the show, I’ve started to do more of that in my own act. He’s a very balanced person, so it’s pushed me to try and be balanced. right, girl, come on, show us your stuff,” says Cindy Kalmenson, remembering the early days of Girls with Guitars. It was the mid-1990s and she had moved to Nashville from her native California.“I started going to all these writers’ nights and there you’d meet a lot of people coming to do just three songs in a round.” Kalmenson asked some of her fellow female singer-songwriters to join her onstage as Girls with Guitars. “I was just inspired by them and apparently they were a little inspired by me,” she recalls. The group’s membership fluctuated, sometimes including as many as 10 women. “We were busting at the seams,” she recalls with a laugh. Kalmenson performed with the group for about twelve years until she left Nashville for Ojai. The appeal of sharing the stage with other women never left her, though. When she met Patricia Avis Cardinali, Girls with Guitars WOW (Way Out West) was born. The group performed their first show together in 2012 and went on to have a regular gig at the Vine in Ojai. “We did that once a week for a while and we would invite different girls to come in and sing,” remembers Cardinali. “Even the young ones,” adds Kalmenson, “just to kind of get their feet wet to come open up with a song or do three songs” of their own. The format of a Girls with Guitars WOW show always changes. Sometimes each artist will sing three songs in a row. Sometimes they’ll take turns singing a song. Other times, they’ll perform bluebird-style facing each other, with the audience all around them. Whatever the style, the philosophy remains the same. “It’s all about camaraderie,” says Kalmenson. “It’s always been a very supportive thing,” Cardinali adds. Today, the core group of Girls with Guitars includes Kalmenson, Cardinali and Natalie Gelman. Kalmenson first read an article about Gelman in the VCReporter and said to herself, “I’ve got to meet this girl!” These days, they don’t get to perform together very often. They’re busy with solo careers

The next show will be on Sept. 7, when Girls with Guitars will open for Dennis Quaid and the Sharks at the Rock the Wish concert at Topa Mountain Winery. Proceeds from the concert will go to Make-A-Wish® Tri-Counties, which helps “grant magical wishes to local children battling life-threatening medical conditions.” After that, sometime in November, the band members will perform at Ojai Underground Exchange. Each Girls with Guitars show is destined to be different, but the spirit remains. “We’re troubadours,” explains Kalmenson, “messaging the humanity inside.” That will never change. ♦

of tomatoes, saffron and spices. These were so tender and delicious, and I loved the tangy sauce, which was lighter than typical cream-based curries. The buffet also included a curried potato stir-fry with green beans and onions — drier and more earthy than rich, and quite tasty. I never found room for the dal tadka (lentils cooked with spices and tomato), but the traditional salad bar made for a welcome touch of freshness. Buffet orders came with naan; both the unseasoned and garlic options were pillowy soft and served fresh from the grill, with just a touch of crispiness. We eagerly sopped up those savory sauces and delectable chutneys (spicy cilantro and mint, sweet tamarind and creamy raita) — although my one minor complaint might be that the garlic naan could have used more garlic. We also ordered the aloo paratha, or naan stuffed with mashed potatoes and spices, and tandoori shrimp. These were all up to the same high standard set by the other items. The stuffed naan had a great blend of spices and a touch of oil on the bread to moisten the dish. The shrimp were large and plump, pale gold from delicate spices and cooked until just done. I love Indian food and have a tendency to gorge, leaving no room for dessert. I paced myself this time around and thus was able to fully enjoy a dish of kheer, or rice pudding. Smart plan: This was a particularly good example. Super creamy with hints of spice and coconut, and beautifully textured from the just-cooked rice kernels. Less extraordinary, but still quite good, was the gulab jamun. These small balls of fried dough (similar to doughnuts) came piping hot from the fryer, drenched with a sweet syrup and dusted with coconut. Almost too sweet, but lovely all the same — these would have been a standout if that rice pudding hadn’t been so darn good. Chance brought us to Saffron, but I would gladly return to sample the wonderfully prepared entrees and desserts and sip a drink or two. Who knows what other surprises await? ♦

I want to be strong for her, but I’m a big crier. I cry on every phone call, and it’s awful. How do I show up for her and not let my feelings overwhelm me so she is not sad or worried about me and can concentrate on getting better? — Emotional When you’re visiting a friend or loved one who’s seriously ill, it’s nice

by amy alkon to show up bearing gifts — like flowers, magazines, and a paper bag you can hyperventilate into. It’s scary seeing someone you care about all small and frail in a hospital bed. And this is your mom who’s really ill. If something happens to her, it’s not like you can just run out and pick up another one at Costco. Even so, the level of fear you experience when you see her is something you could have some control over. Neuroscience studies find that novel experiences are the most emotionally powerful, having the most intense effect on us. Additionally, psychology research finds that people quickly become acclimated to both positive and negative changes in their lives. Accordingly, seeing your mom for the first time will have the most gut-punchability. To dial down the intensity of your reaction when you first see her, you could ask her boyfriend to take some video of her and send it to you. He should ask your mom first, of course, so it won’t violate her privacy, and perhaps cast what he’s doing as sending you a hello. If she balks at letting him, he could then tell her the real deal: that it’s to emotionally prepare you for seeing her.

The other major player in how you react to your mom’s condition is empathy. Neuroscientists Olga Klimecki and Tania Singer note that empathy involves our observing or even just imagining what another person is feeling and having that trigger the same sort of feeling in us. They give the example of hearing that a friend is sad because her grandmother is dying: “Our first reaction would be empathy, which means we would share the feeling of sadness and thereby know what our friend is going through.”

and feeling and feeling) without doing anything to try to change their situation. In time, we get overwhelmed by the distress we’re experiencing at their distress. This often leads to what Klimecki and Singer call “withdrawal behavior”: our trying to escape our uncomfortable emotions by ducking out and leaving the other person alone with their suffering. Empathic concern, on the other hand, is an other-focused response. It starts with our experiencing that initial bolt of “feeling with” a person who’s suffering, but then we shift into “feeling for” — as in “What can I do FOR you?” Empathic concern is basically empathy with an action plan, motivating us to try to make things better for another person. The important takeaway for you is that you don’t have to let your feelings run the show, dragging you boohooingly along behind them. You can instead control your feelings by shifting from me-driven empathy, empathic distress, to mom-centered empathic concern. In practice, this simply takes redirecting your focus from how sad you are to how helpful you can be — emotionally and practically. Think Warrior Nurse instead of Drama Queen.

Ultimately, it’s feeling loved — not laughter — that’s “the best medicine.” This initial bolt of empathy rises up automatically. But once you experience it, Klimecki and Singer explain, there’s a fork in the road, which is to say you can go one of two ways with your empathy: into unhealthy empathic distress or healthy empathic concern. Empathic distress is a me-focused response — empathy that turns into emotional quicksand when we just keep “feeling with” a person (feeling
