SPOTLIGHT
The iconic frontman, the worshipped figure we all want to be, illuminated on stage ankle deep in smoke with one hand on his guitar and the other clutching the between song beer, wipes the sweat from his brow and professes his love to the crowd. Or is he talking specifically to you? Surely he is, yes he must be, but what can you do to emulate his adoration? You could never pull off that haircut, and the tattoo is unlikely to be well-received by your mother but hey, what about his clothes? Likely to have been freshly plucked from an LA thrift shop or a vintage store in London, you have no chance of ever rocking similar items. Instead you plump for the most alternative of the tees on the merch stand and be done with it.
Music and fashion have been inextricably linked since pretty much forever. Fans across the decades have outfitted themselves accordingly to whichever musical movement they sought an identity within. Whether that meant the misappropriation of safety pins and tartan trousers, donning a green parka or putting on a snapback and growing a moustache, more often than not you can guess what’s on someone’s iPod from what’s on their body.

As the music industry has become ever more digitalised, so too has the online market for merchandise flourished. Nowhere more so than with the emergence of independent clothing labels taking inspiration from the music scene. Our generation of indie kids just can’t abide leaving the house in something off the high street these days (unless it’s from Urban Outfitters…) and this shift in attitude is catered for perfectly by the #ShopIndie community.
independently designed line of t-shirts tagged FSFYM branded, that appeal to the music and fashion tastes of the blogosphere generation. With a nod to poster boys Peace, and an allusion to the perpetually outdated nature of physical music, the graphics carry a playful but poignant message. The pleasant resurgence in the popularity of vinyl does not belie the fact that demand for CD’s is at an all time low. However, it seems independent music lovers and bands alike are capitalising on a freshly burgeoning desire to own a physical product in our digital age. The satisfaction of “sticking it to the man” is a regular motif in anthems of every decade, and what better way to bypass the generic than to triumphantly support the endeavours of those doing something different.
Take for instance the growing prominence of unique online retailers such as ‘Out The Woods’, where a selection of the t-shirt designs are done by up and coming musicians and bands themselves. Or ‘Blue Corner Store’, for whom ‘glamorous indie rock n’ roll’ is all that is needed to inspire their graphics. EMII
Emii is a pop/dance music artist from Youngstown, Ohio. She has begun making a name for herself in the industry, with impressive video views on YouTube and having worked with the likes of Snoop Dogg (or now Lion, shall we say?). She is gearing up for the release of her newest music video, her first film debut, and couldn’t wait to tell us how it all began. When I was nearly 18 I took the bus to NYC to pursue my dreams (sounds cheesy, but that’s how it went). I wrote, recorded, performed, and auditioned whenever and wherever I could. One of my day jobs in NYC was working in a comic book store, so I would work regular hours until five o’clock and then head straight to the studio, write and record all night. By the time I was done I would go right back to work in the morning. At that point I realised that it didn’t matter how hard it was, I had to keep going. I fronted a few bands and toured independently until I found an independent music label that supported my vision, and then I moved out to California to work with them. So how did working with Snoop come about? When I was working on my song “Mr. Romeo” with producer Adrian Gurvitz, we had been tossing the idea around of having someone add that little bit of magic to the track. Snoop’s name came up, but almost jokingly because, well... How the hell do you get ahold of Snoop? Anyway, when I was recording the master vocals for “Mr. Romeo”, the owner of the recording studio came in and really loved the song. We started talking about our idea and lo-and-behold, the studio owner had Snoop’s managers phone
number in his cell phone. Everything happened from there. Snoop is amazing to work with and he is one of the coolest cats I know. You’re about to release your new music video for “Freakier Freak,” what was your inspiration behind the story for the video? The moment my label asked me, “what kind of theme are you thinking of for the Freakier Freak music video?”, the words “Sci-fi” practically fell out of my mouth. I knew without a doubt that I wanted to work with Director Neil Johnson again on another project following Starship, so we hit the ground running. I’ve always loved comic books, science fiction, action/adventure flicks, and video games, and that love is pretty apparent when you watch the music video. If you had the chance to collaborate with another artist who would you choose and why? I would probably choose to collaborate with Bruno Mars. I mean, he’s just extremely talented. What do you have planned for your music career, anything that you can tell us about? I definitely want to get my music out to the world, so I will be doing a lot of performing and
touring, as well as writing new songs for my fans. There are some big things in the works this year for me, but I better not spoil any surprises just yet. In addition to your new music video, we’re also going to see you in front of the camera in the sci-fi/thriller film STARSHIP:RISING What can you tell us about the film?
worked on those films, because they were very patient with us despite how clumsy we were.
Growing up, I did a lot of acting on stage in theater and musical theater productions and have always loved it, so I wouldn't say I swapped music for it. I hadn't had the opportunity to work on any feature films until now, but I believe that for the right project there is no reason why I couldn't continue with both acting and music. I love to perform and entertain, so that's what I'm doing. In the film you play a character called “Jolli,” who is described as adventurous and opinionated. Do you think there are any similarities between you and your character?
Touring, filming, writing, recording, and rocking out with my fans! That's the short version. Is there anything else you would like to add? To my fans, thank you for appreciating what I do and supporting me. You are my inspiration for life!
Are you going to continue with both music and film or are you just going to focus on one?
I’m definitely going to focus on both. Like I said, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible. It was an incredible experience. There are What have your experiences in both music starships, gun battles, steamy sex scenes, and and film taught you so far. Any advice crazy plot twists. The film can accurately be you would like to share with our readers? described as "Game of Thrones in space." Don't doubt. Don't quit. Just find a way. What made you decide to swap music for acting and try out for the role in the first place? What are your plans for the rest of the year?
TWITTER: Twitter.com/EMIIMUSIC FACEBOOK: Facebook.com/musicbyemii
There are certainly similarities, but there were definitely moments where I had to stretch myself outside of what I'm used to in order to create the character that Director Neil Johnson envisioned. What would you say was the most difficult task you faced while onset of STARSHIP:RISING? When Neil told me to improv a reaction to my co-star, EJ, when his character says something rude to me in the script. I suppose it wasn't that difficult for me personally, but after we got the shot, they had to fix the set because I inevitably had broken it when I flew out of my seat. They said that breaking things was expected but I still felt bad. On a side note, I'm very thankful for the entire crew who

Album of the Year MUMFORD & SONS
While there was stiff competition Mumford & Sons pulled out on top. The category this year was filled with alternative rock, folk, and R&B.... not the typical pop variety. Since its release in September 2012, ‘Babel’ has gone on to be platinum, and sell over 1 million copies in the US alone. ‘Babel’ was a number 1 album on the Billboard charts, and has had people all over the world getting in touch with their blue grass southern roots.
RECORD of the Year
GOTYE ft. KIMBRA "SOMEBODY THAT I USED TO KNOW" “Somebody That I Used To Know” put Gotye and Kimbra on the world stage this past year. Not only did the record reach number 1 on the Billboard charts, but it was covered by Mayday Parade for ‘Punk Goes Pop 5’ and on the hit TV show Glee. Gotye beat out the likes of Taylor Swift and Kelly Clarkson to win the award. The song also won for Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance. Not only did this win prove that anyone can find global success at any stage in their career, but that the public loves a good song, no matter who sings it.

RAT ATTACK
‘RAT ATTACK EP’
Rat Attack are a four piece punk rock group. Their debut self-titled EP out this month is full of party punk anthems that will get stuck in your head and have you playing them over and over again. Starting off with “A Bird in Hand” it sets the tone for the whole album, before launching into “Facehooked,” which keeps up the momentum. “Look Back and Laugh” one song that most people can probably relate to lyrically, starts off wonderfully with a drum solo and leaks into a great guitar riff. “Heartbeat” with guest vocals from We Are Ocean’s Liam Cromby and the latest single from the band; has great guest work, catchy choruses and is sure to be a fan favorite. Ending the EP on a strong note is the first single off the EP “Bad Catholic” which might be a bit dis-pleasing to religious folk but none the less sticks to their party punk, new wave/alternative sound.
BY: DECEMBER LEANNE HOLD THE FIGHT
‘WITH A BREATH AND A HOPE’
Hold the Fight are a pop punk band from Eastbourne, England. Released on March 11th, their new album ‘With A Breath and A Hope’ is filled with energetic riffs, hard-hitting drums, and positive lyrics. Opening the minialbum is “How Many Times Man, I’m Not Caesar”, a track that epitomizes summery pop punk. Similar tracks “Eleanor” and “Who’s Game For Another One Line Adventure” feature repetitive guitar riffs which disrupt the flow of the songs at times. However, the album picks back up with current single “Baby You Be The Architect”; catchy and energetic, this song is definitely the stand out on the album and best showcases Hold the Fight’s potential. The album ends with tracks “We Will Sink Your Battleship”, a heavier song with strategically placed gang vocals, and “Face It Kid, You Can’t Build A Bridge Out of Algebra”, a promising future favorite. Although it sometimes loses its way, ‘With A Breath and A Hope’ is a solid album.

FIGHTS AND FIRES
‘WE COULD ALL BE DEAD TOMORROW’
Fights and Fires are a UK punk rock band from Worcester. Their newest release, ‘We Could All Be Dead Tomorrow’ is a true testament to the genre that still captures their unique talents. The album opens suddenly with intense vocals on “Chase The Blues”. It’s the perfect starting song that packs a punch once the band fully comes in. The following tracks transition seamlessly into one another, which keeps the initial energy way up. The heavy riffs and drums round out their well-defined and polished rock sound, making for an incredible release from this four-piece group. It is impressive that the band are able to keep delivering the heavy punk while proving that they are experimenting and evolving in their sound throughout this album. Fights and Fires have perfected the art of controlled energy that makes this album a truly amazing one to listen to over and over again.
BY: BRITTANY MCGARITY CARTEL
‘COLLIDER’
Since their first album release in 2005, Cartel have continued to grow as a group, proving they are able to change their sound and show diversity within their songs with each new release. ‘Collider’, at the bare minimum, shows a maturity in Cartel’s sound with pounding drums, electric riffs and infectious beats. “Take Me With You” gives a subtle dose of pop-punks riffs while “Best Intentions” shows off heavier musicial features and prolonged lyrics. The second half of the album gives a new take on the bands signature sound, and will definitely prove popular with both old and new fans. The second half seems to be more tight-knitted and energy packed, focusing on a few reoccuring themes. The album ends on “A Thousand Suns”, which is haunting to begin with before it breaks out into a strong structured closing track. A good addition to Cartel’s discography, which is sure to do well.
BY: BEKKA COLLINS BASTILLE
‘BAD BLOOD’
It’s been a long time coming for older fans like myself, but Bastille have finally released their debut album ‘Bad Blood’, which has already shot into the UK charts at No.2. To say I was disappointed in this release would be a lie, but disheartened somewhat? Yes. Purely because a lot of the material is not new to my ears. I am excited for other folk to experience some of the bands older material though. The infectious synth beats in “Flaws”, mixed with the sincerity of “Oblivion” and the chilling nature of “Laura Palmer” is sure to convert almost anyone into a fan. The addition of newer songs such as “Daniel In The Den” and “Weight Of Living Pt. II” really spice up the album and show the bands true talent as musicians. You would be mad not to pick up this album, and I know I won’t be the only one putting it on my potential best releases of the year list. Excellent.

EAST COAST Paris are a alt-rock quartet from Boston, Massachusetts. With some members partaking in previous musical endeavours, a wealth of experience and talent is spread evenly among this four piece. After the formation of the group, the members sought out a new approach to both sound and music creating something very rare, but distinctive within their genre. Although they are a fairly new band on the scene, their backgrounds provide a stable platform and their newest single “The Heartless” is an elogant yet thrashing mix of waves and vocals. Their debut EP will be released on March 26th so be on the look out you may have just found your new favourite band. BY bekka collins

Poughkeepsie, New York’s Far From Proper may be rising stars in the Northeast’s thriving punk scene, but they are working hard to get their shiny-brand of pop-punk heard country-wide. Forming in February of 2008, the band have worked tirelessly since, managing to play four tours in just under a year, all while keeping their sights set on making honest, original music. Far From Proper hold true to the scene’s DIY ethics, releasing their music independently and playing countless shows with bands like With the Punches and Real Friends. Hailing from North Carolina the progressive poprock band, Unifier, bring music that definitely pushes the limits. Their debut album, ‘Colorado’, is a twelve track album filled with perfectly executed guitar riffs and catchy lyrics. They even had the opportunity to record in Cannon Found Soundation Recording Studios. Be sure to catch Unifier on one of their East Coast tour dates and be sure to check out their debut album. To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a non-profit organisation based in Florida. The organisation presents hope and a lifeline, or even just someone to talk to for people who are struggling with addiction, suicide, depression and self-injury. The movement started with one person, one story and one goal and has since inspired hundreds of thousands of people. Jamie Tworkowski, founder of TWLOHA shared his experiences with us surrounding the movements latest project, a 17city USA Tour, described as: “an evening of songs, conversation and hope.”

are the stories that remind us what’s at stake. These are the stories that keep us going. Music has always interlinked TWLOHA and other supporters together. Were there any main reasons why as an organisation, you decided to focus so heavily on music and its community?
A lot of people are familiar with TWLOHA and how it all began, but what has kept you motivated and driven to continue reaching out and helping people over the past six years?
Jamie: It happened really naturally. It was not strategic. Music shows up in the original TWLOHA story because it was a source of encouragement for my friend Renee. Then our friends in bands were some of the first people to wear our shirts and that had so much to do with people finding out about TWLOHA. It’s been part of our story and our culture ever since. We think there’s something special about the fact that music is allowed to be honest.
Jamie: We hear from people who tell us they’re still alive because of the work we do. We hear from people who are getting help. We also hear from families that have lost loved ones to suicide and addiction. These
Heavy and Light started out as an annual event in Orlando. This year it turned into a 17 city tour with musicians, talks and poetry. Why did you decide to travel across the country, what was the tours main purpose?
Jamie: The goal is to move people, to know that it’s okay to be honest, and that it’s okay to ask for help. The annual event in Orlando became our favorite night and flagship event, so of course we loved the idea of bringing it to more people in more places. The goal for 17 shows was the same as the goal for one. 17 just meant more people could experience it. The tour was made possible by a million dollar grant we won in the American Giving Awards presented by Chase Bank.
We wanted people who we felt understood and could represent our vision for the night. It’s a night meant to exist at the intersection of pain and hope. It’s a night of honesty. What were your highlights of the tour?
Jamie: The tour was amazing. On so many levels, it felt like something special. Hailing from Hertfordshire, Young Classics are ready to unleash their new sound on the world. Previously known as Pop Punk band Paige, they have recently released their debut single “Don’t You Dare”. Full of thrashing guitars and passionate vocals it is just a taste of what’s to come, and we’re already looking forward to what they have to offer. Their debut album which will be released this year promises infectious and vibrant songs which will be sure to reach a wide audience and grab the attention of lots of new listeners. VIMES from Cologne, Germany are an electronic duo but with an exciting twist. Forming back in 2009 they have already gained international recognition for their creative blend of techo music and dark-pop sounds accompanied by haunting vocals and uplifitng digital beats. Having been praised for an infectious live show, the duo, alongside their live drummer are known for producing mesmerizing visual elements and a captivating performance. Their combination of live instruments and digital effects turn their show into one big dance party, if nothing else. The band are familiar to the stage, and are ready to pack their bags once more. The group have confirmed that they will be making appearances at showcase festivals such as SXSW, Canadian Music Week, Eurosonic Noorderslag and plan on announcing more shows around the globe soon. Although comfortable on the stage, the band have only just recently self-released their debut single “UpStairs” back in 2012, through Humming Records / Rough Trade.
“UpStairs” is a classic example of a band that are comfortable with their sound and have already crafted something unique among all the carbon copy music we’re used to hearing. The intensity and emotion that is portrayed throughout this track is impressive, and for a debut single it has already caused quite a stir online. The band have since released their newest single, “House of Deer”. It is somewhat darker and focuses more on the build up and structure of elements, and how they collide together, rather than the typical building blocks of a song. The duo, alongside their plans of touring around the world are also in the studio working on their debut release with Jochen Naaf (Emeli Sande, Lady Gaga).
