The value of each drop of water, which only usually manifests itself when its supply is threatened, must be recognised and preserved in the wettest as well as the driest times. Water is a precious gift, essential for life. However, it is no more a free gift than say, oil or coal. They all exist in nature but there is cost in discovering, preserving and nurturing the sources, collecting and refining the product and delivering it to the client. To ensure we have enough water available for future generations, everyone must become conscientious and respectful in their use of water.

Veolia Water in the UK In the UK, Veolia Water has established a strong presence in every aspect of water cycle management. We own and operate three major water supply companies in the south-east of England. These companies are regulated independently by the Office of Water Services (Ofwat).

Our business services We’re also a key player in the commercial side of the UK water market where we have established a strong reputation through a broad range of activities, including: • Building, operating and maintaining waterrelated assets on behalf of our clients. • Providing customised and sustainable solutions to optimise water cycle and wastewater management for our industrial clients. • Offering technological solutions for the treatment of potable, process and utility water, and wastewater. • Operations and maintenance activities in public sector water and wastewater treatment plants. • Customer services, including meter reading, billing, customer queries, cash collection and debt management.

services

Our commercial expertise In recent years our commercial UK business has gone from strength to strength, with a client base that includes many major public and private sector organisations. We divide our non-regulated services into four key sectors: municipal clients, industrial clients, commercial clients and sustainable communities. We have a long history of innovation and problem-solving prowess. So whether we’re building a brand-new, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility for a water company or operating a commercial plant that was built in the 1970s, our approach remains the same: we work with the available facilities, technologies and budgets to develop and deliver the best possible solution, every time.

All clients have different needs We never resort to a ‘one size fits all’ solution, because we recognise that each client is unique and we pride ourselves in creating a fully bespoke service. For instance, our contract might require us to install and manage complete turnkey facilities, or to resolve issues and improve efficiency at an existing plant. The size of the deal is irrelevant; and we always aim to provide a high-quality service. Our clients tell us they value our set-up because they know we represent a safe pair of hands. Leaving the management of their water operations to us as a trusted partner frees them up to focus their efforts on developing their business.

Management and delivery

Our ‘municipal’ clients are the numerous regulated water and sewerage companies across the UK. They all share the same objective: to gain increased efficiency and cost certainty from the delivery of water-related services.

For projects and programmes we use our know-how to ensure that our clients’ capital investment plans are implemented efficiently and effectively.

In the UK we own and operate three water companies responsible for supplying drinking water to more than 3.5 million people. We are also responsible for operating and maintaining 107 water treatment works and more than 16,000 km of water mains. We provide a fully bespoke service in relation to water supply and wastewater treatment, by combining one or more of the following to meet client requirements:

Operating and maintenance We ensure the smooth running of client assets ranging from treatment works and pumping stations to underground pipes.

Design & build technological solutions We offer bespoke solutions for the treatment of water and wastewater from the installation of individual engineered solutions and packaged plants to complex design and build projects utilising several unique Veolia Water technologies

5

Treatment, disposal and recycling We help our clients minimise their carbon footprint through the treatment, disposal and recycling of biosolids.

Customer service provision We take on responsibility for achieving our clients’ Ofwat customer service targets, including meter readings, bills, responding to bill-related queries, cash collection, debt management and assisting special-needs clients.

Water supply to industry Our clients rely on us to provide them with an uninterrupted supply of high-quality water in large volumes. They trust us to treat the effluent resulting from their production processes and to dispose of it safely. We offer a safe pair of hands.

Many industrial clients rely on us to operate and maintain the assets they need for water supply and effluent treatment, above and below ground.

At every stage of the industrial water cycle we can provide services to support our clients’ business: from abstraction through to the production of process water and the subsequent treatment and recycling of effluent.

They know we can drive down the costs involved by introducing new technologies and controls, or by improving the performance of existing assets. Many also choose to offset the risks involved by transferring asset management to us over a fixed period.

Sustainable solutions

Recycling at every level

We provide customised and sustainable solutions that optimise water and effluent management for clients across a range of industry sectors, including pulp and paper, food and beverages, metals, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and petrochemicals.

But that’s not all. To limit our impact on the environment, we can convert the biogas produced during effluent treatment into sustainable, non-fossil energy.

Our water and wastewater management expertise enables our clients to focus on their core business.

Driving down your costs

We can collect sustainable by-products for onward sale – for example, our incinerator ash is used by the construction sector for aggregates, and treated waste is turned into fertiliser pellets for agricultural use.

Our multi-utility service Gone are the days when the many different parties involved in a property development project operated independently. Today’s process is slicker, more environmentally aware and firmly rooted in collaboration.

One contact for all utility supply

Reducing carbon footprint

Our ‘one stop shop’ service means that we can provide a co-ordinated below-ground infrastructure package, incorporating project and programme management in relation to all the main utility services.

We also work with the developers to reduce their project’s overall carbon footprint. Environmentally friendly solutions might include sourcing water locally, harvesting rainwater, treating wastewater locally, reusing grey water and converting biosolids into renewable energy.

This means that developers only have to co-ordinate their activities with one point of contact for their water supply networks, sewers, electrical power lines, gas mains and telecommunication ducts – as well as their adoption by the statutory undertaker and the highway authorities.

We can include an Ofwat inset appointment to operate and manage the potable water and wastewater treatment networks on behalf of the client. At this point, we effectively become a regulated company, so take on full responsibility for all billing-related customer service provision.

responsibility Training our people

We take our responsibilities seriously. Our impeccable health and safety track record is testament to the ongoing training that our managers receive. As well as training in health and safety awareness, other necessary courses include defensive driving techniques, stress awareness, signing and guarding and a new system to control exposure to vibration from power tool work.

We pride ourselves on our ability to develop alternative water resources, such as desalination and recycling. And with the growing need to reduce CO2 emissions, we are taking every opportunity to produce renewable sources of energy, including through the application of innovative biogas fuel technology.

Community involvement

In 2007 Veolia Water UK was once again recognised as one of the top-ranking organisations in Business in the Community’s corporate responsibility benchmarking index, with an overall score of 97.5%.

As part of our long-term commitment to corporate responsibility we frequently participate in local sustainable development initiatives, such as green commuter plans. We also have an impressive track record for the promotion of environmental citizenship in local schools and communities.

Acting for biodiversity With biodiversity under threat across the world, we work with our public and private sector clients to minimise the impact our water and wastewater treatment services have on the environment. Although our primary goal is to guarantee high-quality water and wastewater services to our clients, we recognise the importance of protecting all forms of life. That’s why wherever possible, we go to great lengths to preserve and restore the natural habitats and ecosystems in which we operate.
