Good ears, good years. Elders with hearing loss tend to resist wearing hearing aids, because it is uncomfortable and implies disabled. Without any aids, elders often have difficulty with communicating with peole in their daily life, which is most likely to be their family. What’s worse, they are not familiar with the new form of communication, like apps for smart phone, social network and Skype.

SOLUTION Our goal is to design an efficienct and easy-to-pick-up system for elders with hearing loss. Featuring with notify device, our design can prevent elders from missing the phone call. As soon as elders pick up the phone, our system will turn on the television, providing visual aids and in-time subtitles. Family members can send pictures they want to share through a simple app, which can help the elders understand the conversations, and thus to improve their social interaction.

DESIGN PROCESS Contexual Inquiry To find out the feasible solution, we interviewed 8 target users and 16 stakehoders. Contexual inquiry enalbes us to learn the lifestyle of elders with hearing loss. According to our interviews, we built affinity diagram, sequence model and personas.

Personas Our users share these characteristics: ■ suffer from hearing loss ■ keep a simple life ■ live alone or only with few family members ■ want to interact with grandchildren more ■ can only operate traditional telephone

04

Ideation To encourage the social interaction of aged population, we found an appropriate tool for them. That is telephone. They are familiar with telephone, which enable them to talk with others at any time and any place. Instead of a whole new gadget or an app, our design is a service that connect their daily objects: TV and telephone.

Prototyping We built low-fi and high-fi prototype to collect peer feedback. We focus on learnibility and usability, for we want to reassure our design is comprehensible for elders and the operation is not over-loaded for young family members who want to chat with them. The prototypes help us to testify our hypothesis.

USER TESTING 05

User Testing We conducted user tesitng with six target users to collect the real feedback. We observed whether they can use the device smoothly and interviewed them about their feeling.

“

The only thing I have to do is to pick up the phone, which is great. For old generation, like me, we have a hard time learning new things. For example, I never remember how to exit an app on a smart phone.

Hand out when we hang out..

Hanging out with friends, you took pictures for each other. Then found you have a difficult time gathering pictures from so many people and share yours? “ Read between the lines We converted the screenplay into practical scene. Step by step, from sketches, paper models to the real structures.

With limited budget, we looked for suitable props. We spent months to collect and make every thing that would appear on the stage.

A paper model is the most efficient and clear way to discuss the settings with directors and actors. In this way, we can make sure that everyone have the same picture of the stage in mind.

“ Photograpy is a probe into our mind ”

Where do we come from? Where are w going? The two questions are the title of my works. I travled to different places in 2016 summer, but I was capturing the same scene: the vanishing point. This kind of scene points out a road that take you to nowhere. To me, it’s the symbol of the lonley, endless life journey. And I was wondering, what’s the next step of my life?

“ Smart living and transformation of a place ”

Line One is the entrance design of Hu-Guang village. It adopts the dynamic gestures of waving ear of rice, which is a symbol of Hu-Guang village’s most important industry, agriculture.

We used bamboo from the local to build our design. Each component have different angle, trying to create the fluid scene.

30

Line One links the traditional village with moderen technology, which implies the future goal of Hu-Guang village.
