HEALTH SHAPE YOUR SUMMER

We all have goals for the summer to either get in shape, earn more money, create better relationships, etc. What people do not always recognize is how eating and exercising correctly can create all of the above. Nutrition and exercise give us the fuel to rev up our metabolisms so that we can be on top of our game and sustain energy so that we can reach our full potential. Exercising just a bit a day, can take the blues away. MEMORANDUM DOOMS DAY

The concept is gaining momentum as many religious texts, historical documents and even NASA have “predicted” that there will be major changes to the Earth in the year 2012. And with the help of celebrity believers including the always-reliable Mel Gibson joining in, 2012 has become the talking point at dinner parties everywhere. RETRO LIFE John Taylor and Nick Rhodes formed Duran Duran in Birmingham, UK in 1978. They named the band after the villain "Dr. Durand Durand,” played by Milo O'Shea in Roger Vadim's science-fiction film, “Barbarella.” Their first singer was Stephen Duffy. Simon Colley soon joined Taylor, Rhodes and Duffy. Colley was the band's original bass player with Taylor as the guitarist. This was the first complete lineup of the band that played live shows. Of course like any other band, lineup changed, but the music remained the same .

For the techie who has everything comes the latest in unbridled extravagance. Fashion house Christian Dior is set this month to launch a line of luxury cell phones costing a ridiculous amount of money. The phone will come in two versions: a "basic" one for $5,000, and a "Lady Dior" for $26,000. The latter's price tag is justified by 640 stones and 3,251 carats of Swarovski crystals embedded in a crocodile skin sheath. Both models will feature touch screens, an integrated media player, and Bluetooth, you know the rest. They do have one actual innovation, the phone comes with a "My Dior" —a USB key-sized version of the main cell phone that communicates with the mother ship cell phone via Bluetooth and clips to the outside of a bag. Christian Dior says this way you don't have to go digging through your bag to find your phone. want to make a call

Ferretti Yachts and Mochi Craft launch "Platinum Selection, the exclusive program that extends to pre -owned yachts. This package of valuable services was until now offered only to newly-registered motor yachts. The program will first be rolled out in Italy by the Luxury Yacht Corporation (LYC), the select Ferretti Yachts and Mochi Craft dealer for the country. The pre-owned yachts in their portfolio will be supervised and certified by the shipyard itself, checking the overall functionality and offering added value services to new and existing owners. The program will then be extended across the dealer network for all the Ferretti Group companies. The thorough verification and certification process for the yachts will be carried out in a number of stages. These include an inspection by the shipyard's service department to assess the functioning of engines, generators and all other onboard equipment, a survey report and a list of any maintenance and repair operations that need to be carried out. Once this work has been completed under the shipyard's supervision, the yacht can become a "Platinum Selection" pre-owned model. The survey is followed by a complete cleaning and hygiene service throughout the boat: mattresses, cushions, carpets and anything else judged necessary is replaced to offer the highest levels of comfort and well-being. At this point the yacht can take full advantage of the "Platinum Selection" guarantee offered by the dealer and managed directly by the shipyard.

In the world of Hollywood image is everything, which makes it difficult sometimes for actors when it comes to the constant changes of real life. Naomi Watts is one such example.

Naomi Watts has experienced great success with roles in a wide variety of films including “Mulholland Drive,” “The Ring,”“21 Grams,” and Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” remake. However, she also achieved great success on a personal level as well, wedding actor Liev Schrieber and giving birth to two sons.

those ‘almost moments,’ but it doesn’t happen for whatever reason. So to make it and to put it in the movie would have felt completely inauthentic and taken us out of the movie. This is the Clive and Naomi’s moment that the audience is waiting for and I think we would have been ... lost in that moment.”

In the interim between her sons’ two births, Naomi filmed her newest movie the action thriller, “The International.” She talks about how her scheduling accommodations strengthened an already fervent desire to do the film in which she plays a Manhattan assistant district attorney who is out to bring down one of the most powerful banks in the world. About the movie…

“What I love about Tom’s style is that it’s never any moments where he’s giving you exactly what your waiting for,” she continues. “It’s always this surprise and truth more than anything. So we did shoot that moment and it was in a couple of cuts, but I guess we felt it didn’t ring true. And when I say subtle, I mean, it’s when she leans on his shoulder, will they kiss? or will they not? and they didn’t!”

“First of all, it came to me that Clive Owen was doing a movie with Tom Twyker,” she recalls. “And that made me instantly want to read the script, despite the fact that I felt that there would be no way that I would be working that close to having my first child. Then, I met with Tom and the way he talked about the film, his sensibilities, cinematically, sounded very interesting to me.”

“That’s what I love about Tom’s style is that it’s never any moments where he’s giving you exactly what your waiting for.”

“The subject definitely played a part and Tom also said that, no, look, let me go away and see if I can work out the schedule and make it doable for you. And he did and he came back and he said we can work it in 21 days and shoot five consecutive weeks,” Watts added. “They started two months before me. And so, by the time I got onto the set, my son was three months old. So I felt ready to go back to work. Also, I couldn’t do a film where I was driving the whole project… I couldn’t have played Clive’s part. Definitely, some of the films I’ve done, the characters are definitely in an emotional, turbulent state. Eleanor Whitman was actually quite together and I felt that I could handle her.” Watts then summed up in a few short words her overall experience of working with director Tom Twyker. “He’s a bully,” Naomi joked, “No, I’m just kidding, he’s not.” While one is inclined to believe that an on-screen pairing of her with Clive Owen will involve sparkling on-screen romantic fireworks, Naomi was quick to tell us don’t hold your breath. “We shot nine love scenes that didn’t work,” Watts explains. “We did shoot one scene that was an ‘almost moment’ and even that scene was very, very carefully done. There’s many times in life where you have

VERGOMEDIA.COM 28

Watts was also quick to note the film’s impeccable release in the middle of an ever-continuing global economic crisis. “Yeah, I mean, people have said the timing is extraordinary and did you know we actually created the whole thing as a publicity stunt?!” Naomi noted, “I mean, it’s is uncanny. The timing and what’s going on makes it extra thrilling for an audience member, I suppose, being on the edge of your seat.”

As a result of the economic crisis, box office receipts have surged since the beginning of the year. We asked Naomi Watts just as people begin tightening their wallets, if she sees actors tightening their salaries for roles as well as a scaling back in big-budget Hollywood filmmaking. “I don’t know if they’re making too much across the board, but certainly, I’m doing a movie now where it’s the least I’ve been paid in about ten years maybe,” she replied. “And people are willing to go to work now for that, which ordinarily, I would think wouldn’t happen.” “But I can’t see the film industry coming to a grinding halt anytime soon,” Watts continued. “I think we are maybe more open to negotiations and things like that. But I think the art world tends to thrive in times of recession. We need these theaters and we need stories to be told and we need to take ourselves away from the reality of our situations of circumstance. So, I don’t think money is going to be tight indefinitely.”

Dear He Say/She Say: I have a serious problem. My husband told me that he’s buying the kids a dog for the holidays. I’ve always said no pets in the house, because I’m allergic, and because I’m the one who has to clean the messes and vacuum the hair. What should I do? – Reaching for the Allergy Medicine in Memphis. He: So what’s the problem, that you don’t want to be the bad guy, or that you and your husband can’t agree on how to run the family? I can’t say if you should have a dog or not, because it really depends on how old your kids are. If they’re old enough to take care of a dog properly, and they really want one, then I say get some allergy shots and let them have it. If the children are small and the burden falls on you, tell everyone no way. They’ll be upset, but they’ll get over it. She: Before you get a dog, you might want to get a marriage counselor. What kind of husband goes out and makes a serious family decision without consulting anyone? I think he’s trying to be the hero of the family, at your expense. Dear He Say/She Say: My husband wants to move, so that he can be closer to his job (he has a 70 minute commute right now), and also so that we can have a bigger house. Money isn’t the problem, because he does really well. I like where we live, and I’m the one who stays home and takes care of the house. I don’t want more work during the day. What can I do? - Wants to Say Put in Pasadena. He: So, you’d rather he drive 70 minutes twice a day so that you don’t have to vacuum a couple of extra rooms? That sounds selfish to me. From the way you talk, I’m guessing you don’t have children, so I think you ought to rethink what’s important in life: his safety or your easy routine? She: Any time a couple moves, it needs to be a joint decision. If you can’t both agree, then don’t move. But try to find other options to help your husband, like maybe getting him into a car pool so he doesn’t have to do the driving every day, or look into mass transit. Dear He Say/She Say: I’ve been dating a guy for three years. Everything is great, except that he still lives at home with his parents. Since he’s thirty-six, this seems a little odd to me. Plus he really enjoys spending time with them, like on weekends when we could be out with our friends. The only time we have to ourselves is when he comes to my apartment, and even then he won’t spend the night. What can I do? – Dating a Homebody in Dallas. He: Uh, the first thing I have to ask is ‘are you sure he’s straight?’ Unless he’s living at home to save money for a house, you’ve probably got a real problem guy on your hands. He might be in the closet, or he might be a momma’s boy, but he’s definitely not changing for you anytime soon. It might be time to start seeing other people. She: It all comes down to one question: Are you happy? If not, it’s time to move on. If you are and you think you can deal with his stay-at-home habits, then stick around. Let him know that if he’s not willing to compromise and go out sometimes, you’ll go out without him. Then arrange a night out with the girls. VERGOMEDIA.COM 42

Carlos Miele is a multi-disciplinary creator who chooses an informal artistic background and works in collaboration with artists such as Sol Lewitt, Hani Rashid, Tunga, Arto Lindsay and Paulo Mendes da Rocha – Winner of last year’s “Pritzker Award.” Through his work, he’s always in constant experimentation, crossing various frontiers by combining different languages in his art performances, installations, videos, photographs, architecture and fashion..

Miele uses new and diverse media to build by means of images a universe of illusion to the context of urbanity and time. His work and performances have been presented in museums and art centers in solo exhibitions by the likes of the Contemporary Art Museum in Brazil and at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Group exhibitions include the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Exhibition "50 years of Biennial International de Sao Paulo” in Brazil. One of the main characteristics of Carlos Miele’s fashion work is the creative convergence of cut and design with combinations of craft and luxury. His designs transcend the influences of his Brazilian roots reconstructing them for new audiences, creating a work that is fresh and unique. Miele also distills a variety of urban environments, drawing inspiration from very distinct groups of women: cosmopolitan, sophisticated and independent. His work exemplifies that life's frontiers are imaginary. Nothing is compartmentalized or segregated. During the last 6 years, Carlos Miele has dedicated himself only to his fashion work. In 2001, he started showing internationally in London and since 2002, the designer has been showing his collections in New York. Miele is considered by Suzy Menkes, from The International Herald Tribune as the “master of fiery color and pattern” and “master of the delicate craft and intricate detail.” For Virginie Mouzat from Le Figaro, “Miele presents precious and ultra-feminine gowns with prints. The Brazilian designer’s specialty is easy to imagine on a red carpet.” The New York Times affirmed the “Brazilian designer Carlos Miele showed a collection that called to mind the same spirit of glamour Mr. Burrows invoked in the 70’s.” The positive results are also reflected on sales in 24 countries and also among celebrities such as Camilla Belle (elected the number 1 in the “10 best dressed” list by Vogue America, wearing a Carlos Miele gown), Sandra Bullock, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Heidi Klum, Eva Longoria-Parker, Alicia Keys and Brooke Shields. In June of 2003, Miele opened his first flagship store in the Meatpacking District in New York. The project, created by the architect and visual artist Hani Rashid, from Asymptote, was defined by the Time Magazine as a space “that’s both chunky and smooth, as if carved out of ice that’s melting and setting the clothes afloat.” Considered by The New York Times a “dream landscape,” the store became one of New York City’s references of contemporary architecture, as published in several books and architectural magazines. The space represented New York at the International Biennial of Architecture and Design and received many awards, including two as “the store of the year.” In November 2007, the designer opened his second international store at Rue Saint-Honoré, in Paris, also projected by Hani Rashid. The design of the two-floor store takes inspiration from a combination of influences including Brazilian masters Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx. Their interest in abstract figurative affinities, the French Baroque and Parisian Art Nouveau, all were tempered by the precision inherent in new technological means of manufacture and design. In Brazil, Miele has designed his flagship Sao Paulo store, a space with nearly a 800square-meters, which was finished in November. It is much like how he designs his signature dresses, as a three-dimensional figure. In other words, the space was largely carved in situ, given the difficulty of representing Miele´s concepts on a plane surface. The result is an unpredictable space, a swirling series of warped, embracing bays and coves that pulls visitors along a meandering course, away from the repetitive, rectilinear spaces that are typical of the street. The architecture created by Carlos Miele is directly related to the proportions of the human body, space and time as noticed by French philosopher Gilles Lipovetsky (author of “The Empire of the Ephemeral” and “Hiper-Modern Times”). Lipovetsky noted in a recent interview to the Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo: “The interesting thing about this store is to see how Carlos Miele has built the label’s identity through the sensuality of the space, full of sinuous curves. It is like we are getting inside a women’s body. Luxury, today, needs to invent. Labels cannot simply make products. They also need to construct ambiances that create the label’s experience, that integrates architecture, art, design, commerce and nature.” In 2007, Carlos Miele launched his casual line, Miele, which has outfits for different occasions but also incorporates the technology and the Brazilian handwork which is always used in an innovative manner in the designer’s signature label. Besides the flagship stores in New York, Paris and Brazil, the Miele collection is available in over 20 countries, including the label’s first international store opened in Miami. The designer’s amazing ability to mesh a strong fashion vision and social conscience has allowed him to create and develop some of the most innovative endeavors with artisan cooperatives from several regions of his native country. Carlos Miele brings Brazil’s beautiful handcraft techniques that were slowly being lost and forgotten to the international runways and important fashion store. By doing so he created a connection between two worlds that would normally never find each other.

Rosario Dawson is making m-o-v-e-s and doesn’t plan on stopping. She is the woman in every man’s dreams and a woman that women want to be like. Having grown up in New York City, she was born to a plumber of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican descent, and a construction worker who was Native American and Irish talk about diverse! This beauty broke into the scene with the 1995 movie “Kids” and ever since she has been flying high.

awson has played in everything from “Rent” to “He Got Game” and “Men in Black II” to “Seven Pounds,” which premiered in 2008 starring Will Smith. She hasn’t always been in chart toppers having starred in many independent movies, but all that does is drive her to be the best at what she does so naturally. Can’t you tell? This mixed beauty has appeared in music videos, think the Chemical Brothers “Out of Control,” even doing an introductory voiceover for Prince’s 1980’s hit “1999.” Individuals have said that Rosario is a “Sexy Geek,” but can geeks be sexy? We guess so. If anyone can team up with Prince, they have got to have that fire. Who can forget her in the “25th Hour?” A young girl, falling for an older man, and supporting him until the day he went away to prison. But he ended up finding her in the end. That way of acting surely cannot be faked, especially since it wasn’t a movie that went straight to video. Besides her acting, Dawson is a pillar in her community. Everyone loves pillars, prominent supports, who without them things would not get done quickly or properly. She is active in several organizations, but co-founded Voto Latino, which gets young Latinos into the electoral process. All we can say is “Rock the Vote.” Rosario has been an advocate for change since the age of 10, and we can tell that there “ain’t no stopping her now.” In the works are various films including: “Parts Per Billion,” “Killshot,” “Wonder Woman,” and “Sin City 2.” Don’t think that those are the only films as she has plenty set to release in 2009 and 2010. Rosario could easily be a model, having appeared on the cover of “H” magazine and “Lucky” magazine, amongst others. Who would not love her luscious hair, bright eyes, and pouty lips? No one who can see! We look forward to seeing Rosario Dawson from the red carpet to the big screen because we can’t get enough of her. If she takes 2009 by storm like she did the last couple of years her fans will be legion. Having already attended the SAG Awards on January 25 and co-sponsored the Latino Inaugural Gala at Union Station, she showed us that she is a person we will never forget. So we ask the dying question… who would want to?

A man closer to his dreams Up Close and Personal with Paragon Chris Cole Who is Chris Maurice Cole you might ask? A 21-year-old, 6 foot, Washington, DC Metropolitan-area raised man with a dream. Born on September 28, 1987, Cole was raised with two brothers and one sister. His parents split when he was young, but he grew up close to his brother Devin, who is dear to him with a relationship that is solid as a rock. Devin is his little brother for life. This Christian gentleman surprises everyone by his age, but his drive is what he wants people to notice. Having founded F.A.M.E, a record label, his goal is to be recognized in the same light as any other major label. As a man, his vision is to be the best leader and role model in all of his relationships. He seeks to always be in a position to take care of those that he loves and to give back to those that society considers less fortunate. At the end of his journey he wants to leave an impressive mark on the world and lifelong memories for those that sustained the ride with him. A University of Miami student, majoring in Accounting and Finance, Cole dishes on President Barack Obama, along with his childhood, fashion and romance.

On the new President How do you feel about Barack Obama becoming President? President Barack Obama gives me hope that I too can fulfill my dreams and that all things are indeed possible. Growing up I was always told that I could be and do anything, but I never truly believed that statement. I think President Barack Obama erases that doubt for so many African American men. With his campaign for “change,” and the fact that he has already conquered so many barriers, it challenges all of us to continue to strive for our dreams. Of course with dreaming you must also be passionate and willing to put in the hard work.

On Life If you could change anything in the world, what would it be and why? I can’t say that I would change anything. I am one of those people that believe that everything in life happens for a reason. I think that the best part about life is the experiences we go through and how they shape us to be the people that we are. What do you think is your purpose in life? I was always told that you find your purpose doing something that if you receive no monetary compensation, you would still do it. For me, that’s music. The difficult part is finding the area that I am supposed to most influence. What drives you? First, I never want to fall into the category of a stereotypical black male. I want more for myself than what society told me I could be based on the environment in which I grew up. Secondly, I want to be able to help others, especially black males and give them the opportunity to do the same. If you could meet one person dead or alive, who would it be and why? Jay-z, hands down. . I am a huge fan of his music, I would love to pick his brain as to how he keeps himself motivated through his journey, I wonder what he says to himself when he wakes up in the morning knowing that he controls a “culture” (hip hop). Who has had the greatest impact on your life and how? My mom without a doubt. She knows me better than I know myself. She is there for the late night phone calls when I just need someone to talk to and to the emails when I need someone to proof read a paper. Also, she’s in the stands at every event I am a part of. She supports me even if she doesn’t agree with me. She is a mom, mentor and a friend.

Tell me about your childhood. Growing up, I was a loner for much of my youth. My father was not around and my best friend was killed when I was in elementary school. It was difficult for me to let anyone get close to me. When I entered high school, I went from being a loner to one of the most popular guys in school. My home life was good. My mom is a real strong woman and she made the best out of any situation for me and my brother. The community we grew up in wasn’t considered the best but it made you want more, made you want to be better, and taught you to be tough. Do you have any kids? If so, how many? None at the moment. I have to make sure my life is on point before I bring another life into this crazy world. Being a parent is no joke! Kids are expensive and you have to be willing to make lots of sacrifices.

On his favorite… Book -

I would have to say I have two that really impacted my life, “Men Cry in the Dark” and the “Measure of a Man.” Movie - “Friday” Sports - To play football, to watch basketball Athlete - Kobe Bryant Food - Jerk chicken with peas and rice

On Fashion Describe your fashion style. My fashion style is based on my feelings. I wear what I want because I believe that for the most part as long as you feel fresh, you look fresh. Ninety percent is just about the confidence you have about yourself. What is the worst fashion faux pas you made? Going to Jamie Foxx’s album release party in a white tee. What is one item of clothing you can’t live without? Fitted… I need a hat.

On Romance Describe your ideal mate. Older, 5’4” or shorter, curly hair, full of personality, with a hint of attitude. Do you have a girlfriend? Are you dating? Currently, I am single. Hoping that one day when the time is right, we will find each another. There is a saying that sometimes when you want to catch something, just slow down and be patient and it will come to you… so I am hoping it will work itself out. Are you a romantic? What have you done for girlfriends in the past? I am a sucker for love. It takes a lot to get me there but if you do you can have the world. Are you anti or pro Valentine’s Day? Anti only because I have never had my girl do anything for me… but if I have someone special, I love spending time with them.

Can you cook? What is your best dish? Of course, what do you want? I can wine and dine a lady at home… What do you like to do in your free time? Don’t have much of it these days, with F.A.M.E. and College Hill, but with the little that I do have I spend listening to music, people watching, and reading. If you could live anywhere in the world where would you go and who would you take with you? D.C. I love where I am from. It’s a great place to raise a family, own a company, the culture is great, and there is plenty to do. I don’t like people knowing where I live so I would only take my mom, brother, my two closest friends and my girl (if I had one…lol). Who are your musical influences? The list is endless. From Jay-z to Nas, Big L, Drake, Trey Songz, Lauryn Hill, Usher, Michael Jackson, the Temptations, Coldplay, Gym Class Heroes, etc. What would you like to accomplish in the next 5 years? Wow, 5 years from now, F.A.M.E. profiting at least $100 million a year, a part of at least 6 Grammy’s, my degree, and a steady relationship. If you had a million dollars what would you do or buy with it? Clear my mom’s and my bills and then promote F.A.M.E. Do you have any tattoos? If so of what and what do they mean? Yeah I have family first on my chest, just a rule to live by. F.A.M.E. and Status, F.A.M.E. is my baby, my company that I’ve built from the ground up, and Status is a clothing line under F.A.M.E. They mirror each other because “the status that I wish to reach is fame.” What do you want to tell me that I have yet to ask? I am on the upcoming season of Bet’s College Hill Miami and my company F.A.M.E. currently has three artists. If you want to know more about Chris Cole check him out on BET’s College Hill Miami or visit him at myspace.com/tak_notice, facebook under chris cole university of Miami and at www.Chris-cole.net.

Nunu Wako is an Ethiopian-born, American-raised young artist who has accomplished many achievements. As a model she was the 2005 Nautica Jeans & “Vibe Magazine” National U.S. Model Search winner and has been featured in magazines such as “Blackmen's” 2005 April issue as the center fold. In September of the same year, she was also featured in the “101 Sexiest Women of Color in America.” She has also graced the covers of “Washington Entertainment” and “Tap Magazine.” She appeared as a beauty in “Hype Hair,” “Black Hair Magazine” as well as various others. She has done very selective videos such as Tabi Bonney’s “Syce”, and was one of the 8 faces for Kiss Make-Up 2006/2008 as well as one of the faces for “Vanessa Wigs.” She has also done numerous fashion shows for Baby Phat, Sean Jean, Roca Wear and commercials for companies such as DTLR as well as being a spokesmodel for various products and companies.

What advice would you have for other people that are trying to get in the industry? My advice is that before anyone can believe in you, you have to be your biggest believer. If you have the drive, determination and the attitude for success without taking short cuts, the opportunities are endless because people will recognize you are a true go getter and hustler. Chase you dreams as if you are a marathon runner…don’t ever get tired of chasing it.

What do you do to keep in shape? Quiet frankly, keeping in shape is a tough thing to do. My eating habit is very strict (unless I start [to] crave for things I have no business craving for…lol.) I am a vegetarian so that maintains and cuts out half of my eating issues. I don’t eat junk food and I am very picky on what I eat and from where. I work out at least 2-3 days a week. Mostly cardio related. I highly dislike lifting weights… I can run for days before I pick up a dump bell. So eating healthy and cardio keeps me in shape What is your favorite beauty product? I don’t [know] if I have a favorite beauty product… I stay pretty naturally unless I am attending major events or doing a shoot or something… I stay with at least 10 different lip glosses in my purse so I guess that might be it…lip glosses. I love them and they should be named girls best friend.

What is one thing that you cannot be without? My Blackberry. OMG, anyone that knows me well knows that my Blackberry is my everything! Thank God for the RIM Company and the geniuses behind it. They made my life million times easier. Want to see me cry, steal my Blackberry. I will forever dislike you though…lol. What is your favorite fashion store? See I can’t say… my fashion sense depends on how I feel. I can shop anywhere at any moment. However, I WILL NOT BUY anything on a mannequin. I don’t buy anything if there is more than three of it. I will not buy anything that is typical or out of every girl’s and women’s favorite store like Bebe. I just refuse to and most of my dresses are designed by me and made by my partner Everton McNeil and we have a clothing line called Audorrah. So I will never look like the next woman standing next to me. Who is your favorite designer? I don’t have any. Who is your favorite model and actress? My favorite model is Tyra Banks and actress is Halle Berry. I remember when I was like 8 years old, my speech writing teacher made us put together a five years from now who I want to be like pamphlet. I cut out a picture of Tyra and Halle Berry and wrote a paragraph saying why I wanted to be like them. I still have that pamphlet too. I absolutely believe they are the epitome of strong women by becoming something out of nothing and being positive role models as well as positive figures in their perspective arenas. I believe I am headed down the same route as them.

What is your favorite part about being NuNu? Oh my… first and foremost, I thank the Almighty God for making me the way he has made my outer and inner being. I am blessed and the best part of being me is the part that is priceless to me and the part that I cherish the most. Emails, notes and messages I get from across the seven seas tell me how much I encourage, motivate and inspire young girls, young adults, both men and women, and women in particular. I mean, there are days I cry reading some of the messages. That to me is the best part about being who I am. I am this young woman in pursuit of my dreams and goals just like everyone else and to know that my determination also motivates and inspires others is the fuel to my burning fire everyday. I couldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for the same support, motivation and inspiration I get from the same individuals I inspire. I thank God that they believe in me as much as I believe in myself. Where do you see yourself in five years? God willing that I live that long, I see myself successful and doing charity work all over Africa with less fortunate families, children, women and teenagers. Five years from now, my burning passion is to expose Africa in a positive way. Five years from now, I will be in my fourth year of a project to help people in Africa. It will continue to be my solid foundation and as long as God lets me breathe, I will always give back however I can, big or small. VERGO, Trevor Richard, thank you so much for exposing me and my future endeavors and giving me this opportunity to shed light on me when you have thousands of other high profile successful models and business women. Hopefully, sooner than later (smiling) I will be your cover story. Thanks a million!

Interview By: Joe Malec

After meeting Jared Padalecki there is no wonder why he was cast in the new “Friday the 13th.” His horror resume includes “Cry Wolf,” “House of Wax,” the CW show “Supernatural,” as well as the grotesquely horrific “Gilmore Girls.” It’s no coincidence though that this rising star is most memorable for the characters he’s played in horror movies. A tall, strikingly handsome actor, (more so in person than on television if you can believe it) he could easily ride the wave to stardom on his looks alone. However, he takes himself and the genre he most consistently works, more seriously than that. In movies and television that that rely on cheap, sudden scares, it’s often easy to see the camp shining through by either cheesy dialogue or even cheesier acting. The trick to Padalecki’s success, it seems, is to bring an element of reality into the horror. “I think that I take it seriously,” Padalecki explains. “People get into a horror and people go like, ‘Oh maybe we should go over here,’ you know like, ‘I’m going to die anyways, it’s time to do this and that.’ If you lose reality then it just becomes . . .” He stops speaking then makes an up and down masturbation motion with his hand. I laugh at his use of the gesture. Then he continues, “You have to find the reality even if it’s like, ‘What’s in the room?’ You don’t want to be like ‘WHATS IN HERE!’ You know where it’s like, ‘ok he’s the next to die.’ You have to kind of find a way to hear something in the room, be like ‘what the…’ as opposed to, ‘Here’s the setup for the machete to come through my head.’ “We shot 78 episodes of Supernatural. So I have seen 70 episodes where you can see when guest stars are telling the audience they are about to die, or when they are just making it real, when they are just like, hey I’m a dude, or I’m a chick, and are like ‘What’s that?’ as opposed too, ‘I’m oblivious to what’s going on around me, like maybe someone should come kill me!” Did Padalecki get an option for a second movie? “I think they tried too,” he said. “But we were like you know if they make another, if they do, let’s figure it out from there.” He has other plans than just coming back sequel after sequel. “I also wouldn’t want to come back for another as the hero. I’d love to come back and have a scene and die.” Padalecki is an actor who wants to try different things and isn’t afraid to step outside his typecast. What kind of movie would he like to do next? What would that be?

VERGOMEDIA.COM 63

deal?” he asks repeating my question. “I’d love to do a western.” He counts any Sergio Leone movie especially “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” among his favorites. “Also I’m not, I wish I was kind of, I’m not at the point where I’m like, umm guys, I finished “Supernatural” March 28th, so give my western. Give me a choice, line them up and I’ll choose,” deepening his voice. “I’m still in the process finding out what they are making and going in and meeting on it. It’s not like I’m coming in brand ass new and they’re like ,‘Whose this guy, why does he think he can work on this movie?’ They know who I am hopefully and they know that I’ve worked and so I have a better shot but I like that I’m sort of,” he pauses and changes direction, “It’s kind of exciting what comes next... I’ve done a lot of horrors but it isn’t necessarily by design.” Padalecki’s desire to try different things is especially true for “Supernatural,” where he’d like to see his character take on a darker tone. “We’ll figure out why Sam is turning dark and we get to see him go a little bit darker and get to worry about Sam a little bit which is nice, because Sam was always the one that it’s like, ‘Aww Sammy, he’s a good guy, don’t worry about him,’ and now the tables are turning so its really nice to play.” When we asked if he wanted to play a bad guy though, his answer was a swift, “Hell yeah, hopefully I’ll get a chance on “Supernatural.” That’s what I’m hoping. Seems like it might go that way. Hopefully for the duration of the show, I get to explore the bad parts of Sam, maybe give him some redemption at the end. I’d love to go Vader.” This of course begged the question: Did he think the audience would be a bit afraid of Sam losing his good guy appeal? His initial response was one of cheeky sarcasm, “Absolutely, but who gives a damn.” Then he scaled back, “Absolutely but I’d love to do it, it’d be nice to mix it up.” Padalecki wasn’t the only one keeping busy during his hiatus. Jensen Ackles, the man Jared shares equal camera time with on “Supernatural” couldn’t shake the horror bug either. “He went off to, I think Pittsburgh and shot “My Bloody Valentine’ and I went to Austin to shoot “Friday the 13th” he says. The close proximity of their respective movies filming and release could have destroyed their brotherly bond, both on and off screen. Initially there was the fear the films could open on the same weekend. “What’s funny is that his movie being called, ‘My Bloody Valentine’ and my movie coming out Feb 13th; when we found that out we were like, ‘Aww...dude, I hope they don’t ...The stars aligned however, and good fortune prevailed, as they were able to see the movie together. “It’s actually really rare we have a day off and we actually both had that Friday off, and his girl Jensen Ackles was in town and I think they were going to go on a date and I was like, ‘Uh oh, we’re seeing your movie.” He repeats the same phrase, again, this time with force of a persuasive friend convincing the other to do something he knows he already wants to do. “We’re seeing YOUR movie, and so we threw the little goggles on and snuck into the movie after it started and Kerr who was the officer in the movie. He was in town shooting a pilot, so Jensen called up Kerr and the four of us: me, Jensen, Kerr, and Jensen’s girl went and saw the movie. We were joking afterwards how the guys behind us must have been like ‘these goggles are amazing. It’s like they are right there.” Don’t expect to run into Jared the next time you go to one of his movies. “We had beanies, coats, scarves and glasses and we went in five minutes after it started and five minutes before it ended, just kind of like head down, eyes on the prize.” His eyes are certainly on the prize, and if “Friday the 13th” opens as expected the prize is going to get much bigger for Padalecki.

We all have goals during pre-summer to either get in shape, earn more money, create a better relationship, etc. What people do not always recognize is how eating and exercising correctly can create all of the above. Nutrition and exercise give us the fuel to rev up our metabolisms so that we can be on top of our games and sustain energy so that we can reach our full potential. Despite busy schedules that reflect today’s time, there are countless ways you can reach your fitness goals faster and make your workouts more efficient. The following tips on exercise and nutrition will help you maximize your performance and accelerate your weight-loss and body sculpting goals. After only two weeks of implementing these minor adjustments into your routine, you’ll see major changes in your shape, strength and stamina. In turn, you will be more productive overall. Here is how you can get started with these 10 Quick Ways To Change the shape of not just your body, but also your life! Measure Your Trouble Zones. If your body is “apple shaped,” you should measure your waistline and if it is “pear shaped” measure your legs, hips and thighs. Use a basic measuring tape to track your progress and weigh yourself. Clean Up Your Eating Habits. Eat one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight daily and consume broiled, grilled, steamed or boiled food, as often as possible. Select fibrous low glycemic index carbs and veggies, balance your meals throughout the day and practice portion control. There are many types of nutrition calculators online that can give you further details on calories, etc. Mix It Up. If you get bored easily on the cardio machines, cross-train in between your weight training workouts. Do a few sets of lifting weights, and then get on the cardio machine for 5-15 minutes. This will also increase your fat burning potential. Add More Poundage. If your goals are to lose weight, stick to higher reps and lower weight. If you want to strengthen an area, do lower reps and heavier weight. High reps are about 12-20 and low reps 8-10. Vary Your Intensity and Levels on Cardio Equipment. Do inclines on the treadmill, change levels on the elliptical and vary your pace between sprinting and light jogging on the treadmill. Add in plyometrics to work on strength and power. Plyos and agility drills are a great way to shape your body and tap into its natural energy centers. Know your Limitations. Be mindful of problem areas you might have, such as injuries in the neck, wrists, shoulders, knees or back. Be sure to get advice first from a physical therapist. Change your entire fitness routine, at least every four weeks. Do not repeat the same classes or use the same load for the weights. Vary intensity and types of exercises to confuse the muscles so that they can adapt and change. Be Consistent. Even on days when you lack energy, do something. Even if you do only 20 minutes, it counts and you are burning additional fat and calories and building some muscle so that your body remains a walking thermogenesis. The heat the body will produce will also activate HGH in the body, which is anti-aging and helps you grow muscle so that your body becomes a fat burning machine on it’s own. Use a “Zig Zagged Eating Approach.” When you begin to see changes in your body at your two week check-in that you can have a professional trainer do or yourself, you will need to adjust your calories, protein, fat and carbs to meet your body’s new requirements. On days when you exercise, these portions will be greater, but on days you do not exercise, you will want them to be lower. You especially want to lower your carbs and fats on non-workout days. If you do not see the results you desire in two weeks, seek the guidance of a professional who has credentials in both nutrition and exercise like www.michelle-enterprises.com or www.michellefitness.com where you can turn to the Accelerator Program. You may need a custom designed plan of attack that takes your lifestyle into consideration and will get you where you need to go for the summer. Be sure to monitor your energy, as well. Sluggish feelings while working out are not normal and usually due to not getting enough carbs in your diet or calories. It is also important to drink plenty of water to keep your energy levels up, since dehydration can put a damper on your workouts as well.

Whatever you are planning for your future, whether it's a new house, starting a family or even going on a diet — don't bother. In four years the world will end and your plans will be ruined. This is the belief of thousands of people across the planet, preparing for the end of the world and death of mankind. So grab your diary and put this date in it — December 21, 2012.

he concept is gaining momentum as many religious texts, historical documents, Nostradamus and even NASA have predicted that there will be major changes to the Earth in the year 2012. And with the help of celebrity believers including Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto” joining in, 2012 has become the talking point at dinner parties everywhere. So, where has this cultural phenomenon come from and why do so many people believe? The widespread panic that accompanied the end of the millennium and the whole Y2K debacle seems to have shape shifted into another end of the world scare. Why should we believe this one when Y2K believers became figures of fun to all those who had mocked them? Well, there are many reasons to listen as 2012 theorists can source “facts” and “knowledge” to support their claims. The most referenced prediction comes from the Mayan Calendar as believers point to the completion of the B'ak'tun cycle as the signal that a new world order will be upon us. So the Mayans have apparently predicted that the end of the world will occur in 2012 and that the length of the lunar moon is 32,953,020 days. The Mayans were only thirty seconds off with their lunar moon cycles. So basically it seems that it's all over for us Earthlings. However, misinterpretation can make a big difference when translating ancient texts. If you aren't convinced yet then take a trip to Yellowstone National Park where the world's biggest volcano lays dormant. Beneath this U.S. tourist attraction, a volcano with a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years is expected to celebrate its special day with us during the volcano's anniversary. That's right - 2012. It is understandable that the volcano is set to erupt in the near future but it would seem unrealistic that it would even wipe out a small section of the American population. So are the believers clutching at straws with this one? Moving on. So the Earth has two magnetic poles, north and south, that help protect the Earth's surface from the devastating effects of the sun. Well, hold on to your hat, because the protection is about to be rescinded. The poles are shifting and we are all set for the worst case of sunburn in history. So, stock up on 60 SPF sunblock and grab the biggest hat you can find because it is about to get extremely hot. Scientists have also announced that sunspot activity will reach a massive peak in, you guessed it, 2012, resulting in severe solar storms and atmospheric changes. With this predicted sunspot expected to be up to 50 per cent stronger than previous ones, NASA has even began making preparations for the problems that await. But will these events make as big an impact on our lives as we expect? Cynics will say that all of these theories are based upon false translations and misinterpretations that manipulate people's faith and our need to believe. However ridiculous the claims may seem to non-believers, it is certainly going to be an interesting day when the clock strikes midnight and the 21st of December 2012 is upon us.

John Taylor and Nick Rhodes formed Duran Duran in Birmingham, UK in 1978, naming the band after the villain "Dr. Durand Durand,” played by Milo O'Shea in Roger Vadim's science-fiction film, “Barbarella.” Their first singer was Stephen Duffy. Simon Colley soon joined J. Taylor, Rhodes and Duffy. Colley was the band's original bass player, as J. Taylor was the guitarist, at this point. This was the first complete lineup of the band that played live shows. For drums and percussion, an electronic drum machine belonging to Rhodes was used. Colley left the band prior to the addition of A. Taylor. A few guitarists were subsequently auditioned, for the most part unsuccessfully, as well as a handful of vocalists were utilized after Duffy left Duran Duran early in 1979. Among the handful of vocalists they had prior to Simon LeBon was Andy Wickett, who had a major part in the writing of “Girls on Film,” during his tenure with the band, according to A. Taylor's autobiography. Wickett is also featured on some of the demos that were presented to EMI. Further, according to the websites belonging to Wickett and J. Taylor, respectively, Wickett co-wrote an early version of the song that came to be known as Rio. Upon Colley's and Wickett's departures, they enlisted singer Jeff Thomas and guitarist Alan Curtis, each for only a relatively brief period of time, before finally settling on Taylor for lead guitar and, a bit later, on LeBon for vocals, in 1980.
