john garcia vista chino [kyuss lives] | unida John Garcia, godfather of the stoner rock movement, sits in front of me. Here is a man who fronted Kyuss, one of the most influential alternative bands of the 1990s, a man whose lesser known band Unida will be headlining this year’s Cherry Rock festival in ACDC Lane, and a man who is a trained veterinary surgeon. “My wife and I met in a veterinary hospital,” he tells me. “I’ll always have a passion for that. I’m very fortunate to have two things that I love to do: one, working with animals, and two, playing music.” Physically, Garcia is a large man, with a part sculptured, part three day growth beard and hair tied back in a ponytail. He is very candid, honest, and self-critical, apologising when he thinks he hasn’t appropriately answered my questions. He speaks slowly, delicately, and is very engaging, making a point of conveying his appreciation for his position in life, beginning with his awe for the lane he will return to in May with Unida. “I’m still just letting it sink in a little bit myself,” he says. “Just being in this country, let alone playing in an alleyway named ACDC Lane … That’s just a big cherry on top for me.” Unida have been on again, off again for the last decade. Garcia’s decision to bring the band back for a small run of Australian shows came down to opportunity meeting logistics, principally, a

break in recording and touring with Kyuss Lives! “Unida never really broke up, we were just kinda in a constant idling position. I love Australia, so when an opportunity arose where [a Unida Australian tour] could very well be a possibility … It had to make sense with all the parties involved and it just so happens it made sense.” Kyuss Lives! is the reason Garcia is currently in Australia, he and drummer Brant Bjork being the only original members in the line-up touring with Soundwave. After this tour they will continue to perform under the name Vista Chino, due to a lawsuit filed by former bandmates Josh Homme and Scott Reeder over their use of the Kyuss brand. The cult of Kyuss, which has grown since their disbanding in the mid 1990s, is a strange phenomenon for Garcia. When I ask him about it he takes his time searching for the right words to convey his appreciation for the public’s interest. He almost settles on “humbled” before simply concluding, “It stumps me”.
