“Back in black, I hit the sack, ‘been too long I’m glad to be back...” I’m not sure if anyone remembers those lyrics to the timeless AC/DC song from way back when. A high school or college anthem for some; others, probably not so much. I’m pretty sure I never knew all of the lyrics, which doesn’t mean I didn’t fake it at the top of my lungs through the parts I didn’t know, but as they say, “go big or stay home.” To me the song was all about rockin’ out, being strong, independent, and a little wild. Please don’t bother taking the time to look up the actual lyrics, as I certainly won’t. I’d prefer to cling to the memory.* In that spirit, we opted to go with Back in Black for our style spread this summer. And it doesn’t hurt that black is waging a major comeback this season. Of course, just to keep things exciting, there’s also the all-white look which is still going strong (see our last summer issue for more inspiration); oh – and then black and white – just to mix it up. There is something about black in the summertime that speaks volumes – it’s so bold, so strong, so confident, and contrary to the norm – which makes it about perfect in our book. And even better is how local Detroit anchorwoman, Karen Drew, OWNS it in the pages to come. What a dynamic, fun, energetic, smart, and engaging woman. We are so thrilled she agreed to be a part of this season’s issue. Thanks to her involvement with our last issue, we reached more readers than ever – and as a result, received some great feedback. And for that, I can’t thank you enough. Cheers to the summer!

e asked this local Detroit anchorwoman, co-host of the talk show, Live in the D, mother of two - and our model for this issue - a few questions about how she is able to pursue her passion. If you haven’t met Karen Drew, you should know she is about as fun, down to earth, energetic, talented, and engaging as they come. And an absolute treat for all us that were able to spend time with her.
VM: How did you arrive professionally at where you are today? Did you always have a sense this was what you wanted to do? KD: At 14 I KNEW I wanted to be a News Reporter. In high school I loved debating, talking, asking tons of questions, interviewing anyone I could talk to, and enjoyed writing as well. It is strange to really KNOW what you want to be at that age – but I always was inquisitive and always had a sense of adventure and thought becoming a News Reporter would be a perfect fit . veritemag.com summer 2014 |43|

I attended Southern Illinois University for Radio and TV Communications. After graduation I got my first job in Dickinson North Dakota shooting, reporting, and anchoring. They call that a “one man band” – you do it all ! It’s pretty challenging – but a great learning experience! From there I went to Montgomery, Alabama … Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jacksonsillve, Florida then Detroit, Michigan. “TAKE THE LEAP - IF YOU FAIL THAT’S OKAY - AT LEAST YOU FAILED AT SOMETHING YOU DREAMED OF...”
VM: Many of us struggle with trying to determine how to turn our passion(s) into something we can actually pursue as a career. When did you realize there was a means to do this, and how did you begin? KD: Great question – I find when you have PASSION for something it doesn’t seem like work... and you tend to have more energy, creativity, and willingness to take a risk to pursue your passion. I really wasn’t sure HOW I was going to become a TV Reporter – looking back I was a bit naïve… but I just KNEW I could do it. I was always willing to listen to critiques, and always tried to turn a negative moment into a learning lesson... otherwise the experience was a waste of my time. veritemag.com summer 2014 |45|

Early on I volunteered for EVERYTHING – I worked at the college radio station, a local NPR radio station, wrote for a county paper , and did 3 internships – all unpaid… but the experience was invaluable. That’s the key … experience .
VM: Who were some of your biggest supporters? KD: My mom was my biggest supporter – she instilled a sense of self confidence always telling me I could be WHATEVER I wanted to be. She said it so many times and with so much |46|
confidence I really did believe her. That support meant the world. In the professional world I have a few TV anchors from Chicago ( my hometown) who actually mentored me. I wrote them letters at a young age asking for their advice on how to break into TV Journalism – from there I kept in touch with them and would send them tapes from my various TV markets asking for critiques. Oprah actually gave me some great advice in terms of support – early in my career I had the opportunity to do a sit down interview with the talk

show host. At that time she told me to lift other women up, saying too many times women use our energy to knock other women down – instead lift others up for success – help them – it is the right thing to do. It’s advice I have always remembered and lived by.
VM: What was the toughest obstacle you faced and how did you handle it? KD: The toughest obstacle I faced was

VM: What type of advice would you give women when debating whether or not to take the leap in trying to turn a VM: How do try to strike a balance between work and home – and also passion into some type of career? carve time out for yourself? KD: Take the leap – if you fail that’s KD: I think that is the biggest challenge ok – at least you failed at something you dreamed of – better then failing at something you just settle doing – right ? It’s amazing when your heart and soul are really in it – the things you can accomplish! Set a goal, educate yourself how to get there, don’t take no for an |48|
– every single day I miss my girls. I make sure to take time off of work to spend special mom and daughter time with them, and make the time I do have on the weekends and weeknights with them, count. My friends know I put my phone down and really “LIVE” in the moment.

For myself – I like the early mornings I can do my workout before the kids wake up, and late at night I take at least 30 minutes to myself. I fill out my thankful journal – writing down the 5 things I was thankful for that day. Most the time that list has some basic things – but reminds me how the little things in life are really the things I am thankful for. Oh – I try to do a girls weekend at least once a year – nothing like laughing with old friends!
VM: What’s next on the horizon? Where would you like to be in 5 years? KD: I would love to see our show LIVE IN THE D - get even better – gain in ratings, help more people, and showcase our amazing city! 5 years – honestly I don’t know… which is kind of funny I say that because I’m a planner... but I’m open to all possibilities. I love the POSITIVE stories I am doing and would love to do more of them. I know I want to be an active mom, and participate in school and sports activities with my girls. I would love to get back to writing that novel I never finished – all reporters seem to say that! V

Ahh yes, there it is. The wrist lookin’ all fancy. One of my favorite things about accessorizing has to be to stackin’ up my wrist with all sorts of goodies. For the most part, this is how my wrist looks on a regular basis; won’t ever turn down a good friendship bracelet with rhinestones for anything. This is true. When it comes to layering on the bracelets, watches, and bangles there is no such thing as too much bling! Stacking your wrists with tasteful, yet on trend pieces can complete your look without weighing you down. For my wrist stacking, I usually choose one larger piece of jewelry, and one to two smaller pieces to go around the larger piece then you can add in a watch or a larger bangle and, a little bling for an extra dose of glam.

It’s officially Summer! Time to shed the sweaters and coats and see what’s underneath! Every woman wants to feel confident in her swimsuit, sun dresses, and shorts. So, let’s get there, starting now, by establishing some super attainable goals and getting in a great workout! Repeat after me, I will: 1. STRENGTH TRAIN three times a week. Strength training will boost your overall metabolism and help you to lose inches. It will also make your skin look tighter and give you that nice muscle tone that people always notice. TIP: Try doing exercises using both your upper and lower body. This maximizes your effort in the least amount of time. Also, make sure you are really lifting heavy on your big muscle groups (biceps, glutes, legs, and throw in your abs for good measure) 2. DRINK WATER before and with every meal and snack. Want instant results? Water will help you get them! It helps to reduce any bloating in your body. Water also helps to increase the effectiveness of your workouts. 3. REDUCE MY ALCOHOL intake. Research shows you reduce your fat burn by a third when you consume a mere 3 ounces of alcohol. So, let’s say you work out super hard and burn 600 calories in your workout; that means because you drank 3 ounces of alcohol you lose 200 calories burned. This tip allows you to work smarter not harder. Alcohol converts into acetate. Your body will immediately burn those calories before any other calories you’ve consumed. So, all the other calories will be stored as fat. Alcohol also temporarily blocks lipid oxidation which means you body can not burn the stored fat.

Author Interview with Doyin Richards Story by TRACY GARDNER BENO
P
arenting is always a hot subject. Author Doyin Richards is shedding some much needed light on the optimal role of fathers in our society, with an innovative new book aimed primarily at mothers. Daddy Doin’ Work: Empowering Mothers to Evolve Fatherhood is an accessible, down to earth resource supporting women’s efforts to empower the evolution of fatherhood. Doyin (pronounced “doe-ween”) is a father, husband, writer, Daddy Consultant and public speaker inspiring moms and dads to think, laugh and learn while evolving the idea of fatherhood. His parenting blog Daddy Doin’ Work has garnered well-earned readership and respect, due to his man on the street—or daddy on the job— point of view along with his delightful, engaging attitude. Doyin has appeared on national and international television several times, and is a regular contributor to The Today Show, The Huffington Post and The Good Men Project. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Doyin for an enlightening chat. Doyin is a great believer in the power of women to evoke change. In his blog, his upcoming book, and below, he candidly shares the ideas behind this exciting step forward in parenting.

Your groundbreaking book, Daddy Doin’ Work: Empowering Mothers to Evolve Fatherhood, is due out September 2nd. Why did you write a book for mothers? Isn’t your specialty fatherhood? I think how fatherhood is viewed in America needs to evolve. Bookshelves are filled with books written by dads with advice for other dads, but I decided to take a different approach. How many men do you know who like to take advice from other men on anything - especially when it comes to being a dad? I decided to write this book for moms because nobody knows their men better than they do. As a matter of fact, oftentimes they know their men better than these guys know themselves. The book gives an in-depth look into the minds of modern dads in a way that’s entertaining, informative, and real. I’ll expose the secrets of deadbeat dads, provide moms with tips for dealing with dads who think they’re rock stars just because they have full-time jobs while providing zero assistance with the kids, and describe what separates the great dads of the world from everyone else. Also, there are a lot of women out there making it harder on men to be good dads, and once they finish reading, they’ll learn if they’re part of the solution or part of the problem when it comes to evolving fatherhood. Even though moms are the targets for this book, great dads will love it too because it validates the work they are currently doing for their families every day.
What type of response do you hope to inspire in your readers? The best response is that readers will realize exactly what needs to be done to evolve fatherhood and will feel empowered to take the requisite action to fix the problems in front of us. Additionally, I want this to be a book unlike any other parenting book in terms of content, delivery, message, and entertainment value. In other words, when all is said and done, my hope is readers will step back and say, “This is one kick-ass parenting book.”

In the last several months, you’ve made headlines with activities that can only be described as Daddy Doin’ Work. A sweet photo of you holding your baby daughter while brushing your other little girl’s hair garnered hundreds of thousands of “likes” within hours on social media. Were you surprised by this reaction? How did your family handle it?
should shock me – and my family feels the same way. I’ve had people say that I’m the greatest dad alive. I’ve had people drop racist comments towards my kids and me. I’ve had people call me a hero. I heard about other parents and bloggers getting up in arms believing that I was trying to get attention for doing what every dad should do. I’ve literally heard it all.
At first I was very shocked by the reactions – both positive and negative – because I’ve posted hundreds of photos with my kids on my social media platforms and many of them hardly blipped my followers’ radar screens. However, as I sit here today, I understand that nothing I see or hear on the Internet
My takeaway from my viral experience is I know how far we need to go to evolve fatherhood. If a mom posted the same photo, would anyone care? Probably not, because those behaviors are expected of mothers. We need to get to the point where these behaviors are expected of fathers as well. The photo wasn’t a big

deal to me when I posted it and it still isn’t a big deal to me now.
How do you handle the negative comments regarding your stand on fatherhood and the publicity that has come with it? If you truly break down what haters are all about, it’s much easier to deal with them. In my experience, I don’t know one successful person who wastes his or her time criticizing or gossiping, because successful people are too busy making stuff happen. I simply can’t be bothered with people who don’t know me that want to talk smack about me. It’s their problem, not mine. And besides - if
they’re talking about me, then I must be doing something right. On a similar note, I keep hearing noise about how some people think that I got my book deal because of the viral photo. I wish it were that easy. I signed with my literary agent and publisher months before that photo came to light. Publishing houses would be out of business quickly if they handed out book deals to every blogger who takes cute photos with his or her kids. Fortunately I’m very blessed to have a large amount of supportive friends, family, and followers all of over the world who know me personally and love me, and I focus on them exclusively.

Do you have any specific role models who helped shape your view of fatherhood? Without question, it’s my dad because he was – and still is – an amazing role model for how men should approach fatherhood. When I was growing up, I remember how hard he worked as a university professor, but whenever he was home, he always made my brothers and me his number one priority. He’d give us baths, read to us, take us to the park, help with homework, be a shoulder to cry on, and just do everything a dad is expected to do. I know a lot of great dads who endured horrible upbringings with their dads and are great because they vow to be nothing like them. I’m lucky to have the complete opposite experience and I’m so thankful for being brought up in a household where my dad was the gold standard of what fatherhood should look like.
Yes, my mom is an amazing woman and is one of my best friends. She was the one who taught me how to be a gentleman, how to treat women, how to be sensitive, how to keep my promises, how to work hard, and how to put my family first. Your recent blog entry appearing on Many good modern dads that I know do Huffington Post doubles as a beautiful thank all of those things and are accountable to you note to your mom. Titled 5 Things My their families at all times. One last question, since I know you’ve become a movie expert recently. Of the ones you’ve introduced your daughters to, which is your favorite so far? I’m assuming you mean movies without human actors in them, right? Because cartoon characters are the only items displayed on my television screen these days. If so, my favorite is Wreck-It Ralph, just because of the old-school videogame references and Ralph’s adorable sidekick Vanellope. No joke – I was going to give my youngest daughter the middle name Vanellope, but my wife vetoed that idea instantly.

LAVENDAR LEMONADE COCKTAIL Ingredients:
6 white sugar cubes 2 ounces cold water 4 ounces fresh squeezed meyer lemon juice 4 ounces vodka 4 stems of lavender ice
Directions: You could combine water, sugar, and lavender in a saucepan over heat and make a pretty delicious simple syrup for this one, but I have been trying to keep things simple these days. Instead, combine first five ingredients plus two stems of the lavender in a cocktail shaker and shake at least thirty times. GIANT WHITE CHOCOLATE PECAN COOKIES Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 stick plus 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 1 1/4 cups packed dark-brown sugar 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 large egg, plus 1 large egg yolk 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 8 ounces white chocolate, chopped into 1/2- to 3/4-inch pieces 8 ounces pecans, toasted and coarsely chopped
Beat butter and sugars on medium speed until very light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Beat in egg, then egg yolk, until thoroughly incorporated. Beat in vanilla. Gradually add flour mixture, beating until just combined (do not overmix). Beat in white chocolate and pecans until just combined. Place scoops of dough 3 inches apart on parchment-lined baking sheets with a 4-ounce (2 3/4-inch) ice cream scoop. (If you don’t have a 4-ounce scoop, measure level 1/2 cups of dough and roll them into balls.) Gently press to flatten. Bake cookies, rotating pans and switching racks halfway through, until golden but still soft in center, about 14 minutes. Let cool slightly on baking sheets. | GRILLED TUMERIC CHICKEN SKEWERS | Ingredients:
2 tablespoons finely-chopped cilantro stems or 2 cilantro roots 2 teaspoons whole white peppercorns 2 teaspoons whole coriander seeds 4 large cloves garlic, peeled 3 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs (see note above) 3 tablespoons fish sauce 2 tablespoons oyster sauce 1 tablespoon ground turmeric 2 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar
Directions: Combine cilantro, white pepper, coriander, and garlic in a mortar and pestle and pound into a fine paste. Alternatively, combine in a small food processer and process until a fine paste is formed. Cut the chicken into 1-inch cubes; Transfer a large mixing bowl along with fish sauce, oyster sauce, ground turmeric, brown sugar, and the prepared
paste. Mix everything together well, cover, and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours. Thread the chicken pieces onto bamboo skewers, pushing them tightly against each other to form a tight, compact body of meat on the skewers. Light one chimney full of charcoal. When all the charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and arrange the coals over the full surface of the charcoal grate. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Alternatively, set the burners on a gas grill to the medium-high, cover, and preheat for 10 minutes. Clean and oil the grilling grate. Grill the chicken, turning occasionally, until thoroughly cooked through and slightly charred, about 8 minutes total. Remove the chicken from the grill and serve. SUMMER-Y LEMON RISOTTO Serves 6 as a side
Ingredients:
2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 medium onion, diced 3/4 cup arborio rice 1/2 cup dry white wine 3 to 4 cups chicken broth 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated zest of 1 lemon juice from ½ of lemon (optional) peas, zucchini, asparagus
Directions: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and saute until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add arborio rice and stir. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add wine to rice. Cook, stirring frequently, until wine has been absorbed. Meanwhile, pour 2 cups of chicken broth in a glass measuring cup and microwave on High for about 2 minutes, or until hot. Raise heat to medium-high. Add 1 cup of heated broth to rice and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until broth is absorbed. Repeat, adding 1 cup of heated broth and cooking until absorbed, with the remaining 2-3 cups of broth or until rice is al dente and creamy. Remove from heat. Stir in Parmesan, lemon zest and juice. WHITE CHOCOLATE DIPPED STRAWBERRIES Ingredients:
1 pound ripe strawberries 1 12-ounce bag white chocolate chips 4 tablespoons shortening optional: sprinkles, food coloring
Directions: Rinse strawberries with cold water, gently (but thoroughly) pat dry with paper towels, set aside. Line a small-medium baking sheet (something that will fit in your fridge) with aluminum foil. In a microwave safe bowl (or double boiler) melt chocolate chips with crisco and stir until smooth. Carefully dip strawberries into melted chocolate, turning all the way around so that ll sides are coated with chocolate. Place on prepared baking sheet. When all strawberries are dipped, place baking sheet in the fridge to cool. Add a few drops of food coloring (color of your choice!) into the melted chocolate (if it has begun to set up just put it back in the microwave on half heat for a few seconds and give it a stir) and stir until smooth and coloring is even. Remove strawberries from fridge. Carefully transfer colored chocolate into a zip lock bag, seal it and snip off just a tiny bit of one bottom corner. Drizzle colored chocolate onto strawberries in any design you like. Top with sprinkles. Return to fridge for about 10 minutes to set up. Store in airtight container in fridge up to 3 days. and shades of greens, greys, and blues, with a dash of burgundy, and actually came up with something I felt looked pretty darn good. To my surprise, my centerpiece lasted all summer – and in fact, actually thrived. I mentioned they are versatile – by that I mean they can look modern, or more traditional, minimalist, or lush. It really depends on the container you use and the structure and quantity of the plants you select. Note: they have a very shallow root system, so no need to worry about having a deep container. I used a shallow, oblong stone container for my centerpiece which was perfect as people could actually see over it when they were seated at the table. Total bonus. They can also be planted in beds as well, and in either instance, require very minimal watering. I just finished planting two new containers a few weeks ago, and I am in love with how different they are compared to all of the more traditional plants and flowers I have. They are in a class of their own. And I like to think, Georgia would be proud. V

Outside of the bustling, fashionista-filled, sophistication of the city of Paris -- is a whole other side of France. A side that appeals less to your sense of sight and more to that of taste. Yummm. Food and wine. Some of us are more comfortable in this milieu. Our trip out of the city began with a train to Lyon, followed by a car rental and subsequent journey to Beaune (pronounced kind of like ‘bun’ but with a french accent). This town is considered the capital of the Burgundy wine region and is surrounded by some of the world’s most famous wine villages. Which leads me to Best #1.

| BEST ACTIVITY | Wine Road Bike Trip You must rent bikes and bike from Beaune to these villages and back. There is even a ‘wine road’ for bikes that cuts right through the vineyards and links these villages together, each seemingly more quaint than the next. You don’t have to get all decked out in spandex (although you will see some who are along the trail), but you do need to come prepared with water, a camera, and a laid back attitude. This is very different than wine tasting in Napa or Sonoma. The day that we did this trip the winemakers were all out in the fields, preparing their grapes for the coming storm, and so they were unable to let us into their houses to taste their wines (tasting rooms are rare). You don’t have to stop in all of the towns and can turn around at any point if you are tired.. but trust me.. you will want to keep going. We rode through Pommard, Volnay, Mersault, and Puligny-Montrachet. It was in this last gem that we found Best #2. photos courtesy of tripadvisor.com

| BEST MEAL / WINE | Le Pelugney We were drawn to this eatery because of its charming, warm terrace. It is owned and operated by a lovely Belgian couple (we only met Beatrice, as she was our server and hostess). Our meal began with a crisp, cold glass of a local white Burgundy (this alone would have made the trip worthwhile). Next we had a light salad with a lovely dijon vinaigrette. I had the Puligny chicken, fresh tagliatelle â‚Ź 20. The sauce was amazing. And for the third course, we had a selection of cheeses. After our meal, we sat and let the experience linger and in the process met a lovely French/ Scottish couple who were eager to exchange travel stories. It was difficult to leave, but we had more to see on the wine road.

| BEST VIEW | The Benedictine Abbey of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine After spending a couple of days in Beaune (we could have stayed longer), we slowly made our way to the Loire Valley (think of a place where Kings would vacation to get out of Paris). On the way we stopped at an 11th century abbey in the town of VĂŠzelay (not too shabby). This hilltop abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is believed to house the remains of Mary Magdalene. We stopped and had a gloriously simple sandwich at a deli and then continued up the hill to the abbey. Along the climb you can stop in all sorts of cool shops: photo, cheese, and even a wool shop where the owner makes the sweaters, scarves, etc. from the wool produced by her own sheep farm! | BEST BED AND BREAKFAST | La Chancelière in Saint-Satur From Vézelay, we were off to Sancerre (our first stop in the Loire Valley). You may know this name from the easy to drink white wine it is known for. We sipped our first glass of this on the beautiful terrace of La Chancelière - a superb bed and breakfast in the nearby town of Saint-Satur. This was by far the most enjoyable bed and breakfast I have ever stayed in. From the terrace overlooking Sancerre, to the white table-clothed breakfast of fresh yogurt, croissants, cheese, coffee, etc., to the company -- husband and wife owners and resident dogs - this place was grande. As luck would have it, my sister and I were the only guests that night, so we had the entire upstairs to ourselves - complete with library of old books and sitting area with sofa, entertainment, and mini-fridge.

The next day we were off to Chinon, a small town on the Vienne River (near where it joins up with the Loire River). Chinon’s castle, on a hill overlooking the town, is not one of the better ones in the region, but the town has some nice things to offer: flea markets, a lovely square, great examples of medieval architecture, François Rabelais and Joan of Arc statues, and a fancy restaurant named Les Annees 30. |108|

| BEST DOSE OF HISTORY | Château de Chenonceau

Not far from Chinon, this is one of many Châteaux in the Loire Valley -- but is worth the visit due to its unique history, awesome gardens/ maze, and the fact that it spans a river! Coined the ‘Château of the Ladies’ -- this château has been maintained, protected, and fought over by some powerful broads. My favorite story is that Henry II gave it to his mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Only, after he died, his widow, Catherine de Medici, kicked Diane out and claimed it for herself. Payback! They each had a garden commissioned -- you should visit these for sure. It is best to get to this gem early in the day -- as it is a popular stop. This list of ‘bests’ is not meant to be comprehensive -- but, rather, it is one traveler’s advice of things that are worth your time and money. Memories fade and most trips are difficult to recreate once over. However, each time I go to a wine shop or a market, I search for some vestige of this journey: A bottle of white burgundy or a slice of cheese -- searching for the appellation and the city Beaune on the label. #confused Do you hear the words “selfie” and “hashtag” and nod your head like you totally know what they mean, but deep down, you’re thinking ‘I’m clueless’. Then you should read on. Selfie – a photo of oneself; taken by oneself; usually with a smartphone. It is VERY common to then share this image with a bazllion people - either via text, email, or most likely, socially on instagram, facebook, etc. Hashtag or # - think of this more like a search symbol that precedes a word or phrase and lives primarily on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Placing a “ # “ before a word/ phrase allows you to search for messages or posts about the word or phrase. Example: You want to learn more about or see more posts on the category “fashion over forty”. You can enter #fashionoverforty (NOTE: no spaces), as a search term and you will see several listings. When writing or creating a post on these sites, you can also use a hashtag in a sentence - e.g. Loving #fashionoverforty @veritemagazine - and others who search for that phrase will see it. (Note: when referencing a site or publication, use the @ symbol prior to the handle – and again, no spacing.)
