È sempre un’emozione particolare scrivere l’editoriale del numero di BM che annuncia l’evento più atteso dell’anno: il Mercatino di Natale. Nel corso degli anni il mercatino è diventano un traino commerciale, ma anche, idealmente, lo spunto per numerose altre attività cittadine, soprattutto di ordine culturale che riempiono le gallerie d’arte, i musei e le chiese di interessanti iniziative e mostre legate alla città. Il mercatino è quindi diventato un’occasione in più per far conoscere la tradizione locale ai numerosi ospiti, ma anche a concittadini, spaziando per tutti i suoi aspetti, spesso rinnovati e adattati alla realtá odierna, ma sempre ancorati all’autenticitá locale. Among other things, this issue deals with the most important event of the year: the Christmas market. This is far more than mere commercialism aimed at boosting sales. No, the Christmas market is something much more, it has long become a cultural highlight. Year after year, all manner of cultural events are organised around the market, with new ones being added each year: exhibitions, performances, music. So the market is definitely not only for our visitors but also for the people of our town, enabling them to discover and revive their traditions, traditions which may have been updated but which have certainly not lost their authenticity. I hope that all readers of this issue will find something which interests them personally and which enables them to identify with the town of Bolzano-Bozen, the Gateway to the Dolomites.

The recently refurbished Löwengrube inn, dating back to 1543, contains Bolzano’s oldest ‘Stube’ and in its cellars lie over 1200 different wines, above all from South Tyrol and Italy, but also from all over the rest of the wine world. The inn offers traditional local and Mediterranean light dishes in a minimalist interior flanked by ancient walls.

Situated in the Zollstange or Dodiciville square, a stone’s throw from the town centre, the inn woke up again in June after several years of hibernation, blending tradition with modernity. Innkeeper Helmuth Geier has engaged an up-and-coming young chef, Michael Meister, and sources his ingredients locally. Not to be missed is his ‘Zwiebelrostbraten’, or beef tenderloin onion roast. The Löwengrube also aspires to be one of the best wine-bars in northern Italy and Helmuth Geier is justly proud of the reasonable prices of also his top wines. Der junge Weinbauer Christian Plattner stellt einen hochwertigen Wein gemäß alter Tradition her und liebt es, der Geschichte des Weinanbaus nachzuspüren.

Christian ist die dritte Generation der Winzerfamilie Plattner, aber die Geschichte des Ansitz Waldgries reicht bis ins 12. Jahrhundert zurück, als der Ansitz und die Reben zu einem Kloster gehörten. In einem liebevoll zusammengestellten Museum zeugen Gerätschaften von der einst harten Arbeit der Winzer. Pumpen, um den Wein von einem Fass ins andere zu füllen, Sensen, Ochsenjochs und eine Sammlung von alten Fasskorken. Wenn Christian mit leiser Stimme begeistert von seinem Metier erzählt, könnte man ihm stundenlang zuhören.
