by Bryan Saban US President Barack Obama arrived last April 28 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) where he was given a warm welcome. Meanwhile, some Rosarians had mixed reactions to his visit. “He was not able to firmly support us against China,” said one concerned student. However, some were just happy to witness such a historical visit. “Whatever was said, it is nice to see that PH and US are on good terms,” said another student. This is the last leg of President Obama's four nation tour after Japan, Korea and Malaysia. ■

Summer vacation. As Phineas and Ferb say, it belongs to you and you've got to make it last. We have to make the most of it in our own ways whether it means traveling, swimming, working or being busy with school activities. For the students of Holy Rosary College, the most numerous of these seem to be the school activities, which keep students busy not only during the school year, but also during the summer. Some of these activities include the "Dance ‘Til You Drop", the Leadership Training Seminar, etc. Students who are much too eager in joining various clubs and organizations will find themselves drooping in exhaustion, not to mention deeply regretting their decision due to the amount of activities that keep them from sleeping in. Being one of those students, I can concur. Not being much of a dancer, I never even planned on joining the "Dance till You Drop" workshop. Even without it, my schedule was tight-packed, and I am always overdosed on caffeine and am prone to snapping at poor people to leave me alone, for I am very busy. From what I've experienced, too much activities are not good, not even while summer. Incoming fourth year students are going to be feeling more pressure this school year, due to having to choose a proper college after graduating. Most of them are inclined to taking the UPCAT exams, and feel that they more help in reviewing for it. Again, I am one of these students, and I signed up for UPCAT review sessions alongside my extracurricular activities, which include choir practices, journalism training, and a summer job. Some of us are close to nervous breakdowns. Another reason that too much activities are more harmful than good, aside from the mental health of students, is that a student is then entitled to always be at the school to participate in those activities, leaving no time at all for their family. For those families who are going to leave for vacations, their schedules are going to be compromised by activities causing drawbacks in going back. There are both advantages and disadvantages to being an active member of clubs, in my opinion, but have mercy on your brain sometimes. Students don't need the extra pressure, but it is always your choice. After all, summer is meant for relaxation. Want some coffee? ■

Summer can be the most enjoyed and the most awaited time of the year where you can do anything you want and rest whenever you want. Summer can also be the most frustrating time of the year for certain individuals. We enjoy summer; it is a very big break for us, but the heat is a total turn-off. We usually experience an unbeatable heat that we usually pass off by going swimming or taking a cold shower. The summer heat is one of the problems we usually complain about this summer. It is unusually hot that it can even exceed our own body temperature, which can cause heat stroke. Some people surpass this phenomenon by going on outings and swimming on the beach. Some people chow down on some "halo-halo" or any other cold food too cool their systems. These drinks are commonly popular in summer due to their sweet taste and satisfying coldness of it. These treats are mostly found on the streets where customers crave for the quenching beverages. Whatever vacation you choose, there are many creative ways to get rid of the summer heat and cool off. ■

Ang iba nagdedesisyon na mag-out of town o out of the country. ■

by Matthew Malabuyoc This summer, it is time to get your swimming gear or plan for your summer getaway vacation. Have fun in the sun! That is what most people do during summer. Many people like to have vacations in different places during summer but some other people just prefer to stay at their homes because of the increasing intensity of heat dung summer here in the Philippines. Swimming! I think swimming is the number one activity when it is summer because every summer, resorts and beaches become fully crowded. However, beware of the rising heat. We all know that it is very hot when it is summer here in the Philippines. You might get sunburnt or get darker skin, so don’t forget to grab your skin protection and sunblock. There are still lots of choices of what to do during summer. Other people attend workshops, play sports under the sun, have tours on different countries or go to the location of their relatives like me. I went to Mandaluyong this summer, I just stayed there helping my auntie on house chores. I even became a vendor at the sari-sari store of my aunt on which I called my summer getaway vacation. If you are just about to go on a summer getaway or vacation, ready all the important things that you need for your trip. Bring a cool head because you need it on your travel. The reason is most people are often getting more hot-headed during summer due to the high temperature. When that happens your expected fun summer will become a sad summer. After all, it’s summer! Do not waste the time to grab your chance to have fun, enjoy and do what you want this summer. ■
