Create your own outdoor oasis Now that the warmer weather is here, it's time to transform your outdoor space into a five star oasis. Try these quick and easy do-it-yourself projects that will have a big impact without breaking the bank. Just Like New, Just Like That One of the easiest things to do to instantly improve your entertaining space is to spruce up your patio furniture with a fresh new look. Try a paint like Rust-Oleum's Painter's Touch which works on wicker, metal or wood and comes in a variety of colours. Be daring and create a South Beach style with bright colours like berry pink and Caribbean blue or go for Hamptons chic with winter gray. Pretty up pathways Another trick that people often forget is changing the colour or texture of their stairs and pathways. Liven up existing outdoor stone or concrete walkways with a simple coating of concrete stain or by applying some texture with a Stoneffects finish. All it takes is a small change like this to make a big difference on the look of your backyard. Containers, pots and urnsPots come in all sorts of sizes and can be an easy way to spruce up an outdoor space. Revitalize your plant containers with fun colours that can be changed year after year. Use a no-fuss spray paint like Universal in two or three complimentary colours to add instant style to your garden. Turn your barbecue into hot stuffAnd finally, if you've got a tired looking BBQ, cover up rust spots or chipped paint with a high heat spray paint in a classic black or add some style with a copper finish.

Canadian small businesses need better financial literacy A recent survey by Angus Reid Strategies reveals that many small businesses need to better understand their financial operations. Nearly one in four of the 503 Canadian small businesses participating in the survey, commissioned by business software company Sage North America, admitted they could not identify the most important costs that need to be managed for their business to succeed, a litmus test to the financial literacy of a small business. The survey also revealed that when it comes to complying with government rules and regulations, more than half of the small businesses polled cited “taxes” as their major concern. HST adds to challenges Unfortunately, for many businesses, the challenges of crunching numbers and having a solid financial game plan are about to increase significantly, thanks to the new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) that takes effect in Ontario and British Columbia on July 1, 2010. Ontario's Retail Sales Tax (RST) and B.C.'s Provincial Sales Tax (PST) are being replaced by HST, a combination of the provincial tax and the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). Businesses will need to keep records of HST charges levied, collect the appropriate tax amounts, and then submit the HST they have collected to the government. The system is about to become more complex for businesses, which will need to become familiar with the new regimen quickly and implement it accurately to avoid the risk of government penalties for mismanaging the taxation process. Smart businesses are preparing by seeking the right accounting software to ease the process. They use easy-to-use accounting software to simplify transition processes and to comply with applicable tax rules and regulations. The technology enables business owners to keep an orderly data entry system that ensures all transactions are properly reflected. By monitoring their business closely, smart entrepreneurs are making informed management decisions and better planning for the future. For smart businesses the HST challenge becomes an opportunity to fine tune their operations. “Simply Accounting is helping entrepreneurs to keep them compliant with the new HST regulations, which will affect many small businesses” said Jamie Sutherland, vice president and general manager, Simply Accounting by Sage, Canada's most popular accounting software among small businesses. More information these topics can be found online at www.simplyaccounting.com.

Greening your small business Running a small business has its challenges and the importance of word-of-mouth advertising for gaining and retaining business is paramount to success. As a small business owner you're constantly looking for simple, cost-effective ways to re-direct a few extra customers to your store. One way to add value is to let your customers know that you care about the environment. Along with keeping the planet clean, it may just give you that advantage over your competitors. Here are eight ways that smart shop owners can change the way they do business and better their community: 1. Be frugal about printing paper. Print one copy of a report and distribute it around the office if everyone needs to read it. Print on both sides of the paper and try to proofread on the screen more. Add a note to the bottom of your emails to ask recipients to consider the environment before printing. 2. Encourage recycling. Make recycling convenient and easy for your staff by setting up recycling bins in accessible areas. Then buy recycled paper, ink cartridges, and plastics. 3. Switch to fair trade coffee in the office. Most of the coffee we drink pays coffee producers less than they deserve, with more money going to the “middlemen”. Coffee growers gain 11 cents for every dollar spent on a regular cup of joe, compared with 28 cents for every dollar when you buy fair trade. 4. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent ones. Natural Resources Canada estimates that if every Canadian household replaced one incandescent bulb for a compact fluorescent, it would save more than $73 million a year on our collective energy costs - equivalent to taking 70 000 cars off the road for a year. Fluorescent bulbs not only use less energy, they last longer too. 5. Take action on environmental issues around the globe. Donate a portion of your proceeds to help the developing world. Through Christian Children's Fund of Canada, an international development organization, you can provide gardening tools and clean drinking water to communities suffering from extreme poverty. Select items online at www.ccfcanada.ca. 6. Carpool or allow employees to telecommute once a week. Benefits include saving on gasoline consumption, reducing stress on infrastructure, and lowering carbon emissions. 7. Buy environmentally-friendly cleaning products. There are many green options for cleaners, soaps, and detergents that will reduce the amount of toxic chemicals released in the atmosphere. 8. Write a company green policy. Launch a green campaign to make sure everyone is on the same page. Staff will be more enthusiastic and supportive of your policy if they know how and why they're doing it. Implementing these ideas will get your customers talking and boost morale in the office. Consult with staff and see what else they can come up with to take care of the planet.

September (Amber) Hahn RMT, BPE Becoming a Registered Massage Therapist was a natural decision for me. It grew from my lifelong interest in fitness & health, my background as a competitive athlete, and my education. Massage is a natural complement to any healthy lifestyle, to maintain proper function or to help recovery from injury or disease. After graduating from the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy 14 years ago, I began my practice here in Vernon and have been here ever since. I was a teacher at OVCMT for a good 10 years, and have completed numerous post-graduate and continuing education courses. I enjoy teaching, learning and exploring a variety of modalities. My toolbox of skills has grown over the years -from rehabilitation and deep-tissue techniques to more of a “gentle nudge” to get your body to remember what it was supposed to be doing all along. I am excited about my recent engagement and I am very proud of my son Benjamin who is 18 years old and graduating from high school this year. Drop by my new clinic room and meet Ruffus my Cairn Terrier -- he is Mr. Meet & Greet.

Inside out skin care You've heard that sunscreen is essential to protect your skin from harmful solar rays. But if you use too much sunscreen will you be getting enough vitamin D? Current research has led experts to recommend more intake of vitamin D, especially if your sun exposure is reduced. It can be confusing, but one thing you can do to protect your skin every day, sunshine or rain, is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially the richly-coloured kind. Berries, leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and carrots, all of these contain the natural plant chemicals that protect our skin from free radical damage. The natural health experts at webbernaturals.com explain that free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage proteins, cells and tissues in the body. If too many free radicals are produced or absorbed by the body, or created by environmental toxins, they can accelerate the aging process. Vitamins C, E and A (beta carotene) help neutralize free radicals, and berries — such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries — are top antioxidant foods, along with tomatoes, red grapes, broccoli and even green tea. If your lifestyle and diet don't include plenty of antioxidant nutrients, you should supplement with berry extracts or an antioxidant formula before spending too much time in the sun. Your skin will thank you for it.
Cindy Horyza A year has passed since the opening of Yoga Matters. My intention was for people to join Yoga and experience the benefits of this spiritual practice, and that is why I opened a studio in Vernon. I have had the privilege to share this journey and I’m humbled to say we were voted one of Okanagan’s best in 2009. Practice and commitment to “Self” was the key that unlocked my inner suffering; Yoga is union of mind, body and spirit. This union can only take place through practice. We offer many classes of Yoga, ensuring all ages and stages have an opportunity to practice. We have 4 well trained Yoga teachers as well a meditation group who meet 2 times per week. New to Yoga Matter: Laura Meikle (Registered Massage Therapist), and Morene Philpott (Integrative Healing Specialist). I would like to thank my community for their vote, support, & commitment to themselves this past year at Yoga Matters. Barb was first introduced to the automotive trade by Lyle Hanson and Ed Wunderli who owned and operated Sigalet Bros. She eventually climbed the ladder in the automotive industry. Barb has been with Hilltop Subaru, The Body shop division and Vernon Hyundai for 12 years and now she is the fixed operations manager. The 27 team members Barb works with in the parts, service and body shop all strive for customer satisfaction. The automotive dealership environment is an unpredictable day to day journey. Top five ways to keep your mind sharp Do you ever wish your mind could be sharper? your recall and memory better? There are several easy ways you can strengthen your mental "muscles" whatever your age. 1. Play games that challenge your mind. Luminosity.com is a web site with simple, fun mind games to exercise your thinking processes. And it's free. 2. Exercise your body. Getting more oxygen to your brain is an easy way to feel and to be more alert. Drink more water too. 3. Step away from the television. The hypnotic nature of TV and video games can lower your ability to focus in "real" time and react to what's going on around you. Your mind can become dull. Doing is much better for your mind than watching. 4. Eat brain food. Omega-3 essential fatty acids, like those in fish and flax, support a healthy brain. A dietary supplement called Brilliance from Webber Naturals, contains other fatty compounds that stimulate brain function, as well as green tea extract and omega–3 fatty acids. Other nutritional brain boosters include B vitamins, walnuts and antioxidant fruits, especially blueberries. 5. Learn new things. Try learning a new skill - photography, gardening, cycling, knitting, repairing things - you will invigorate parts of your mind that may have become dulled by routine.

Get wet, be safe, have fun Perfect for those lazy summer days by the lake, poolside or at the beach, inflatable toys like Sevylor's float ring or the deluxe pool mattress pump up the fun of any water activity. “The Canadian summer is short so families want to make the most of their outdoor experiences with water,” says Pat Gray, director of marketing at Stearns and Sevylor Canada. “Towables, surf boards, kayaks and floats are the ideal way to take water recreation to the next level.” Water accessories are helpful for parents with little ones too. For children learning to swim, lifejackets can be bulky, but swim aids like the Stearns deluxe Puddle Jumper can help build confidence when kids take their first plunge. But with fun comes responsibility. Safe water-play practices like supervising children while swimming, observing beach advisories, wearing an approved PFD and abiding by safe boating regulations, ensure that everyone stays out of harm's way.

Cheryl and Barb Well its been almost 4 years now since I bought Vernon Vintners and I’m still enjoying owning my own business and being the boss. I’m very fortunate to have Barb Pozdnikoff as my faithful sidekick, she has brought her own personality to Vernon Vintners and has contributed to the business in so many ways, Thank you Barb ! Last year, for the first time Vernon Vintners entered some wine into the Amateur Wine makers Competition in Napa Valley California and out of 4300 entries came home with 2 Bonze medals....How exciting !! The 2010 conference is soon and I hope to come home with some medals again. At the end of last year we took on a huge project and actually moved Vernon Vintners , carboys full of wine and all just few km down the road . With the help of so many people, especially my husband we finally got our store open in our new location and have had rave reviews from everyone. I feel it is important for us all to remember that we need to take the time to enjoy the things in our lives we work so hard for and what better way than to look and feel beautiful. Because, after all, life is a fashion show, so make sure every step you take is with your best foot forward!”

Christine I came to a transition in my life about two years ago, it was time for me to figure out what I really wanted to do. My love for antiques and passion for being my own boss made the decision an easy one, and Vintage Chic Antiques was born. A space came open next to the Antique Imports auction house and it seemed like the perfect fit. So the buying began and the ideas began to take shape. I sourced out unique shower curtains and bath mats and brought in new quilts. I went to a few auctions and met some amazing people. Everyone was encouraging and helpful. I wanted the space to feel more like a home than a shop and it has taken some time to get it where it is but I was true to the dream and it feels great to me. It has a magical feel to it and I can’t help but smile when I come in every morning. There is something about living a dream. Having an idea and bringing it to life. Such a great feeling of accomplishment. I have enjoyed each step of this process and had so many friends and family support me each step of the way, I don’t know what I would have done without all of you. I truly have the most amazing people around me. Thank you. So if you are ever in the neighborhood and want to pop in for a visit, the coffee is always on and I’m always up for a chat.

Fitness fanatics, Boot camp enthusiasts, runners, gymnasts, swimmers, marathoners, Ironmaners, cyclists, young kids, weekend warriors, quilters, musicians and many golfers cross the door. Nearly 5 years ago Cheryl and Bob Powls opened a second facility as their business was bursting at the seams. Cheryl operates and manages the satellite ofďŹ ce located across from the Village Green Mall, in Railway Plaza. What started as an ofďŹ ce with two Physiotherapists has now grown to three Physiotherapists, two Registered Massage Therapists and Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist team called “Insight Rehabâ€?. Cheryl is proud of the multifaceted approach to patient care that her ofďŹ ce offers. She continues to use a Manual Therapy style treatment only. In addition to this, Physios Steve Witvoet and Kim Read add to the Manual Therapy approach and bring their own avour as well. Steve is specialized in Sports Therapy and Kim brings her Australian treatment inuence to the clinic. Registered Massage Therapists, Carla Buchanan and Ruth Frisby add a valuable asset to the clinic as well. Since they have joined the team a more integrated approach to patient care has been achieved. All the therapists will attest to excellent rapport amongst us. It is proving very beneďŹ cial with the combination of Physio and Massage. We are seeing greats results, with faster return to health for patients. It was always Cheryl’s goal to provide patients with a variety of treatment styles. All are focused on Manual Therapy (hands on) and treating each person’s problem as unique and a puzzle to be solved. If one style doesn’t prove effective there is a good chance that someone else on the team can help the patient. Judy Ostrass is the OfďŹ ce Manager, or more like the “Conductorâ€? of the ofďŹ ce. Spice up your space with the top colour trends for 2010 Avocado and harvest gold bring back memories of the 70s – but what colours will 2010 bring to our homes? To kick off the new decade, Krylon, the nation's leader in spray paint, provides the latest in home design and colour trends, helping you to make a lasting impact with easy projects that are perfect for your home – inside and out.“As the economy continues to climb out of a recession, there is less spending on new and more repurposing of existing items for the home,” says Donna Schroeder, Krylon, colour marketing and design manager. “A great way to bring new life to old objects is with spray paint in one of the year's hottest colours.” According to Schroeder, drivers for 2010 trends are nature, collections, senses and symbols. These drivers are interconnected, allowing each trend to blend into the other to create a cohesive look and feel throughout your space. The four stylish colour themes found in the 2010 palette are as follows: Sense Whether you prefer scented candles, dim lighting or cozy rugs to accent your home, stimulating all of the senses is key. Comprised of soft colours, the Sense trend will swaddle and soothe the soul. It engages all five senses as it mixes textures, scents and patterns and also focuses on the details, allowing you to make a statement with even the smallest elements. Colours in the Sense palette include Pacific purple, morning mist, hyacinth, celery, jade and sand. Nurture Environmental concerns continue to influence home design and decorating, with homeowners shifting toward smaller spaces, while also buying less and repurposing more. To complement this eco-consciousness, indoor design and décor trends continue to be reminiscent of the outdoors. Bring the beauty of the environment into your home with colours found in natural elements. Colours in the Nurture palette include fern, meringue, terra cotta, river rock, mountain view and cloud. Symbol A love of architectural shapes and details from the past help fuel the trend of symbols. Moody and complex colours are integral, allowing design elements from the yesteryear to resurface in modern-day homes. Look for accents with a historical look and feel to complement the dramatic hues and elegant feel of this trend. Colours in the Symbol palette include almond, cherry red, navy, ivy leaf, leather brown and castle rock. Sojourn The beauty and wonder of the world can derive inspiration for your home. By combining meaningful objects from your personal travels with rich, globally inspired colours, you can showcase your belongings as a masterful collection, telling a story of your past travels and experiences through your home décor. Colours in the Sojourn palette include Bahama sea, burgundy, peek-aboo blue, blonde shimmer, Niagara ivory mist and equestrian. More information and additional resources for choosing the perfect colour can be found online at www.krylon.com.

REALTOR®
Even when work led her away to Vancouver, Toronto, and Los Angeles, Charlene Mora always found her way home to Vernon. Charlene still has her hand in the Film and Television Industry, but there was a very strong pull to be home with family and work side by side with her brother, Arbur Fernets. “I have such great memories of my experiences on various studio projects, but it’s the people you remember most.” Charlene worked in the Film and TV Industry for over 20 years, but working with Century 21 Realty Executives for the past three years has allowed her to become more entrenched into this community. When asked what makes this town feel like home her reply is, “the people...it’s always the people. I make new friends every day in this business. And the folks here are real. There’s nothing better than that.” Simplicity and honesty; it’s the philosophy that guides Charlene’s daily dealings. “I was always told that folks may not remember what you did, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. It’s the way the world needs to spin these days.”

HST poses new challenges for businesses Small businesses face significant challenges each year to stay up to date with changing regulations and requirements. This year will be particularly challenging for businesses operating in Ontario and British Columbia, as each province introduces a new Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). And as Ontario and B.C. make the leap to the HST this year, more provinces may follow suit before too long Effective July 1, 2010, Ontario's Retail Sales Tax (RST) and B.C.'s Provincial Sales Tax (PST) are being replaced by a single, value-added HST that will combine each province's provincial tax with the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). As the tax system and its requirements become more complex, where should businesses turn for timely and accurate advice? For a good place to start, consider the free resources available at the Ontario and B.C. government web sites, which offer a comprehensive break down of the HST:• http://www.rev.gov.on.ca/en/taxchange/hst.html. • http://www.gov.bc.ca/hst/tax_professionals.html. Leading business software makers are also reaching out with resources, including Sage North America. For free information and advice on the HST, Sage has created a resource site at www.simplyaccounting.com. The latest version of Simply Accounting by Sage 2010 business software makes the transition to HST as fast and accurate as possible. A useful new “HST Wizard” is now in place to guide business owners through the HST process step-by-step. Compliance is made easier thanks to the automatic addition of the new tax and tax code, while electronic filing requirements have also been updated. With a trusted partner in the form of accounting software, small businesses can eliminate HST headaches, save on the cost of accountants and consultants, and lower the risk of government penalties for failing to comply with new rules.

Setting up Okanagan Engraving in the basement of her new home within months of arriving, Heather quickly gained a reputation for reliability, accuracy and on-time delivery. Heather was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon, and lived part of her life on Salt Spring Island before moving to Calgary in 1979. She ultimately became manager of Engineering Faculty Services Stores at the University of Calgary. Everyone should read the Canadian Consumer Handbook Information is power, especially when it comes to being a well informed consumer. The more informed we become, the better able we are to make wise and careful decisions about the things we need in our everyday lives. Take advance fee scams for example – be cautious about advertisements promising guaranteed jobs, guaranteed loans, credit repair, debt consolidation or similar claims. In many cases, you will be asked to send money to a company in advance but will receive little or nothing in return. Say “No thank you” to anyone who says they can repair your credit history. Did you know it is recommended to get a report on your credit history once a year? Errors in your report could indicate fraud. Always contact the credit bureau immediately to fix
errors. These are just some of the topics covered in the Canadian Consumer Handbook, a handy online source of helpful information on everything from managing your debt to dealing with telemarketers. It even helps you with how to make an effective complaint. The Handbook has been produced jointly by Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments making it applicable to all Canadians. You can find the Canadian Consumer Handbook at www.ConsumerInformation.ca. Source: Industry Canada and the Consumer Measures Committee, a committee of federal, provincial and territorial government representatives in consumer affairs.

Terra Beauchamp Owner / Creator For an introduction to aromatherapy, just pay attention to your own mind and memory. What is more powerful at evoking a past experience than an aroma? Scent is the strongest of all the senses. It can reach back to a distant memory. It can reshape our emotions, calm the nerves and sooth our bodies. Terra Glo is the Okanagan’s very own GMO free, organic Soy Candle Company. We are a small family owned business located in Cherryville, BC. We offer consumers many choices of healing essential oils or our unique aromatherapy blends in natural soy candle form and, as always, take you from plain everyday molds to unique and elegant styles for your home. If you have purchased a candle lately, you have probably purchased a harmful paraffin candle. 90% of candles are paraffin (made from gasoline), which in short, contain harmful toxins that pollute your home, lungs and the earth. Soy candles are the healthy alternative that last approximately 40% longer than paraffin and 70% longer than beeswax and has a brighter flame! Terra Glo candles are made with 100%, GMO free, organic soy oil and lead free cotton wicks. Perfect for the health and environmentally conscience home and the asthma and allergy sufferer. Do your part to keep our earth clean by utilizing a natural, biodegradable and renewable resource! Visit our website for more information and find out how you can purchase one of our candles. Enjoy with clean lungs and a clean conscience from our family to yours.

COUNTERFEIT RING BUSTED IN SURREY DAN FERGUSON (Surrey Leader)
There was $96,000 in fake American banknotes and $130,000 in Canadian, mostly 50 and 100 dollar bills. And there were computers and printers and other hardware used to produce the bogus money. Police who seized the counterfeit cash and equipment from a location in Surrey last week are calling it the largest seizure of its kind in B.C. history. Four people were arrested. Two have been charged. Richard Thomas McGaw, a 30-year-old Coquitlam resident and Jesko Stefan Lindt, a 49-year-old from Surrey, face trial for allegedly making and possessing counterfeit banknotes and for possessing instruments for making counterfeit banknotes. Lindt was released on condition to appear in court at a later date. McGaw, who is also facing additional charges for breaching his bail conditions, remains in custody. The other two who were arrested, a 55-year-old man and 28-year-old woman, were not named by police. They have been released on a promise to appear in court at a later date. The raid was carried out May 14 by the RCMP Federal Commercial Crime Section’s Integrated Counterfeit Enforcement Team. “I am conďŹ dent that this counterfeit currency lab takedown will signiďŹ cantly reduce the counterfeit banknotes in B.C.,â€? said Sgt. Tony Farahbakhchian, the counterfeit co-ordinator for the federal commercial crime section in B.C. Overall, Farahbakhchian said the number of counterfeit bills has decreased in the last ďŹ ve years.
Canoe excursion ends in tragedy ROGER KNOX Morning Star Staff
Severe hypothermia and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in a tragic outing on Sugar Lake near Cherryville Sunday. A 20-year-old Lumby man drowned in the early morning hours after he and two friends, who had been camping on the beach, decided to go canoeing on the lake at approximately 5 a.m. “A short distance from the shore, the canoe tipped over, causing all three males to enter the frigid waters, said Lumby RCMP Cpl. Henry Proce. Police believe one of the three men in the

The other two clung to the overturned canoe and attempted to kick toward the shore. A short time later, the victim decided to

Two men from the victim’s group and another adult on the beach saw what was happening, and all three attempted to save the victim, but they were unable to get him ashore on time. Once on the beach, CPR was attempted, but without success. The third male still clinging to the canoe was rescued by a friend who had commandeered a boat from the nearby campground. “The three rescuers are to be commended for their brave efforts, in attempting to rescue the deceased from the frigid waters, said
