Discover the beauty of the North Okanagan If you are fortunate enough to be spending the summer in the North Okanagan, make sure you take advantage of it. This beautiful region provides its residents and visitors with some of the best summer recreation Western Canada has to offer. Enjoy the beauty of nature at one of the many sandy beaches in the area, or hike your way through a provincial park. Take in the serene views at the Fintry or BX waterfalls, or perhaps indulge your adventurous side and go mountain biking at Silver Star resort. Treat yourself to a culinary delight at a local cafe or restaurant. Or stop by a farmer's market or fruit stand and prepare a meal with fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Pair that with a world-class bottle of wine purchased right from the vineyard. Golfers can lose themselves in the links, while the art-lovers wander through museums or check out some live music or entertainment. Take the whole family camping and rent a boat or a canoe to enjoy the deep mountain lakes from on the water. Try your hand at fishing and you might just catch yourself some dinner. Whatever you are interested in, you will find something to enjoy in the North Okanagan this summer.

Orchards galore People in the North Okanagan are spoiled rotten when it comes to having an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the summer. Find out why the area is famous for its fruit and vegetables by visiting one of the orchards in the North Okanagan, or go and pick some yourself. One sure place to visit is the family-run farm of Davison Orchards in Vernon. Located on Bella Vista Road, the farm has been operating since 1933 on their 60 acres that overlook the beautiful valley below. Hop on the "Johnny Popper" Apple Train for a tour that runs on weekends in May and June, and daily from July through to September. Or stop in their quaint little market for gifts, souvenirs, baked goods or fruits and vegetables. Stop for lunch at Auntie May's Farm House Kitchen for a little home-style cooking, or let the kids take advantage of the Critter Corral or play area. Davison will be participating in the citywide "Tourist in Your Own Town" event on June 12 and 13. Go check out what's new at the farm, take a free orchard tour, and enter to win a Davison gift basket or the event's grand prize donated by the new Sparkling Hill resort. Also this year, on June 20, the orchard is holding a father's day pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., with free orchard tours for dads. For details check their website at www.davisonorchards.ca. Just south of Vernon lies the Gatzke Orchards which offers a licensed patio restaurant and café, farmers market featuring garden-fresh produce, and specialty products unique to the Okanagan, including gourmet jams, jellies and grandma Gatzke’s famous homemade pies. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour through their farm museum, or stay the night in log cabins. Don't miss the experience of hand-picking your own fruit with over 50 varieties to choose from. Visit www. gatzkefarmmarkets.com for details. Located just off Highway 6 in Coldstream, head to the Aberdeen Farm Market with fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade pies, cookies & muffins, a large playground and Coldstream Valley Railway tours around the farmgrounds.

Life’s a beach in the Okanagan The North Okanagan is fortunate enough to be surrounded by lakes, so take advantage and escape from the heat this summer at one of the region's many beaches. Kin Beach is located at the very north end of Okanagan Lake and is a popular spot for a splashing good time. This popular hangout offers not only the beach itself, but a wonderful park with barbecue pits, a large grassy area, towering trees and covered picnic areas. Kal Beach is located at the north end of Kalamalka Lake and offers a long meandering beach with numerous piers that are perfect for a sunset stroll. With golden sands there is a large area blocked off for swimming, and some great shaded areas for cooling off. A close walk away there is a restaurant with an adjacent liquor store, a convenience store, a booth to rent life jackets and kayaks, and in summer there is a concession stand. Around Kalamalka Lake there is also Boat Launch Beach, Kalavista Beach, Kirkland Beach, Sovereign Beach, Pump House Beach, Shady Beach, Mint Beach, Driveway Beach, Railway Beaches and Tamarack Beach. For more information about these beaches go to www. vernonbeaches.com. Paddlewheel Park beach is also a great place for family fun and is located on Okanagan Landing Road with

a boat launch located close. To get away from the summer crowds you can always venture out to the nearby provincial parks of Ellison, Kalamalka, Mabel Lake and Fintry which all offer sandy alcoves for a wonderful day at the beach.

Staying up late After a day of fun in the sun hit up the town for some exciting nightlife. Hit a restaurant for some food, but stay for the patio at Monashee's Bar and Grill downtown on 30th Avenue, or the beautiful Blue Heron Pub's patio that overlooks Okanagan Lake. If you feel like just hanging out with some friends and catching the game, go to Kal Sports Bar on 30th Avenue, Sneakers Sports Bar at Village Green Hotel, Checkers at the Vernon Lodge, Alexanders Beach Pub or Rosters. Stay up all night with a jolt of caffeine from one of the fine coffee shops avail-
able. Some places to watch for are the Bean Scene on 30th Avenue, Talkin' Donkey on Highway 97 and 32 Street, or the Bean to Cup on 39 Avenue and 27th Street. To "club it up" head to MoeJoes or Club 2929, as well as Monashees, if you happen to be over 19 years of age. For a rocking good time check out the live music venues of Lorenzo’s Café in Ashton Creek, the Riverfront Pub in Enderby, or the El Portillo Coffee House in Vernon. Jazz it up at the Vernon Jazz Club or at Sir Winstons Neighbourhood Pub both located downtown Vernon.

A golfer’s paradise Some of the best golfing in British Columbia is right in your backyard. So golf the summer away in one of the North Okanagan’s worldrenowned golf courses. Golfers travel from all over for the luxury of swinging their clubs on the fairways of Predator Ridge. This beautiful golf resort features 18 magnificent holes that wind over link-style rolling hills and rugged pine covered ridges. Predator has designed another 18-hole course called The Ridge, which will be ready for play this year. Be sure to check out Predator Ridge’s luxury lodge and cottage accommodation, restaurants, a spa, hiking trails, pools, tennis courts, and a fitness centre. It is truly made first-class and has worldwide recognition for it. For more information visit www.predatorridge. com or call 542-3436. Since 1913 the people in the North Okanagan have enjoyed hitting the links at the Vernon Golf and Country Club. Nestled in between downtown Vernon and Kalamalka Lake, this semi-private course lets golfers enjoy a peaceful round of golf surrounded by lombardy poplars and weeping willows. There are 6,600 yards of fairway on this 18-hole, par 72, course. Call the pro shop at 5429126 for details, or book on-line tee times by visiting www.vernongolf.com. If you are looking to challenge yourself, check out Hillview Golf Club’s fast playing 18 hole course that is short, but demanding. Sitting at par 57, only 3 holes are a par 4, but they are no easy task. With eight lakes connected by creeks and several sandtraps there are some obstacles over this 3,375 yard course, which make accuracy your best weapon. Call 549-GOLF
for more information. Relatively new to the scene is The Rise Golf Club, developed in part by PGA golfer Fred Couples. The course offers breathtaking views of Okanagan Lake on their 18 hole, par 72, course that also has access to a vacation resort and winery. Nominated for Best New Course of the Year by Score Golf, The Rise allows players generous fairways and five sets of tees to make sure every guest is happy. For more information check www.therise.ca or call 545-7425. Another championship course lies just north of Vernon at the Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club. It offers an 18-hole, 6,423 yard, par 71 course that holds 62 bunkers, 10 water holes and the majestic Deep Creek. It also offers a 9-hole, 2,675 yard, par 35 executive course for a quick nine. Call 545-5824 to book tee-times and for more information. Skills not up to par? Have no fears when you take to the Highlands Golf Short-Game Excellence in Coldstream. This course prides itself on being a great experience for both a beginner and seasoned golfer. It is also a great place to meet for family reunions and company events. Call 545-5300 for information. There is just so much opportunity to get great golfing in the Okanagan, as some other worthy mentions are the beautiful Mabel Lake Golf and Country Club near Enderby, Royal York, with a new clubhouse, in Armstrong, Coldstream Golf Course and River Ridge in Lumby, Sunseeker’s Ridge between Enderby and Salmon Arm, Birchdale Par 3 in Grindrod and Aspen Grove in Lake Country.

If you happen to be in Enderby on July 1 you will have plenty to do. Canada Day festivities in the town include a pancake breakfast, free swimming at the pool, a parade, cake and fireworks. And the people of Salmon Arm can enjoy the Canada Day Children's Festival. Canada has been a country since July 1, 1867, and Canada Day has been a official holiday since 1982. Then when it gets dark make sure you have a view of the DND grounds where there will be a fireworks display. Davison's Orchard will be continuing their traditional Canada Day BBQ. Celebrate Canada's birthday with some of Dora Davison's famous potato salad and a piece of delicious apple pie. The Funtastic slopitch tournament opens on Canada Day this year. Enjoy some of the music the tournament offers at the DND grounds. The headliner for the night is the Young Un's, and tickets are available at A&W after June 1.

Panning for Gold If you aren't having luck in casino, see if you can strike it rich in the great outdoors. Try your hand at panning for gold at Monashee or Cherry Creek just like they did back in the Klondike days. Check out the Goldpanner Cafe & Campground just 60 kilometers east of Vernon on Highway 6. For more information go to www.goldpannercampground. com. If gold isn't your thing, try digging for opals. The hills of the Okanagan are rich with opals, you just need to find them. Digging trips are led by Opal Resources Canada, and they run from June to October. For $40 diggers can spend the day searching for precious gems, and can take up to 2.5 kilograms of them home. For a list of required and suggested equipment, and to reserve a spot in a dig go to www.opalscanada.com.

Silver Star sizzles It may be better known for its fresh powder in the winter, but adrenaline-junkies in the area find plenty to do up at Silver Star mountain all throughout the summer. Silver Star mountain’s bike park offers 1,600 vertical feet of trails and is home to Canada’s largest mountain bike chairlift. For the daredevil type hit the doubleblack diamond runs, or for beginners keep to the tamer paths. One trail you should surely hit up is Spanky, which begins at Sovereign Lake cross-country ski area and propels riders into a 800-metre descent down 13 kilometers of trail. The snow is expected to be cleared out of the trails by the end of June which should make for a great summer season. There are bike camps available throughout the summer, including a novice Chicks on Bikes day camp starting on June 26. There is also a fleet of rental bikes for anyone who would like to give it a try. For the music lover there is also the biggest piping, drumming and highland program in North America on July 4 to 16. Called Piping Hot Summer Drummer, the program offer participants the chance to learn from world-class teachers and performers. You can find great wine all over the Okanagan, but the 9th annual Okanagan Summer Wine festival on Aug. 13 and 14 combines it with arts, music and outdoor recreation. Oh, and plenty of wine tasting. Take advantage of all Silver Star has to offer this summer because before you know it, the snow will be back.

Art for art’s sake this summer It is difficult to tear yourself away from the natural beauty outdoors, but some time spent inside at the Vernon Public Art Gallery will be well worth your while. The gallery features permanent collections from several local and well-known artists such as Allan Brooks, Jack Lee McLean and Henry Glyde. Be sure not to miss the exhibitions coming to the gallery this summer. They include the landscapes of the Okanagan painted by Penticton-based artist Glenn Clark, the graphite drawings of emerging Halifax artist Katie Belcher, and the annual showcase of work from the graduating fine arts students at UBC Okanagan. All three exhibitions will run from May 27 to July 29. If looking is not enough, you will have your chance to purchase some artwork at the annual Midsummer's Eve Garden Party and Art Auction fundraiser taking place on July 21 at the
Caetani House grounds on Pleasant Valley Road. The event, which includes a live and silent auction, is designed to showcase the work of local artists and promote visual arts in the community. Visit www. vernonpublicartgallery. com to find out more. The Gallery Vertigo is a non-profit, artist-run gallery that showcases local artwork, as well as several working spaces where viewers can actually watch an artist at work. Located across from Nolan’s Pharmasave downtown Vernon, slip in the side entrance under Krause Jeweler’s awning. For details call 503-2297. For some unique contemporary art, take a short drive to the west side of Okanagan and check out the Ashpa Naira Gallery on Houghton Road. The gallery is located in owner Carolina Sanchez de Bustamante's home and offers the viewer a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the diverse collection of art. For hours and directions go to ashpanairagallery.
com. And don't forget that some of the North Okanagan's most beautiful artwork is painted on the walls of downtown
Vernon. Take a leisurely stroll through the streets and gaze at the 27 heritage murals on your own, or stop by the Old Train Station for a guided tour.
