Get ready for a road trip! a build-up of carbon particles on critical engine parts,” explains Ken Mitchell, an engineer from Shell Canada. “This gunk has a porous surface that can negatively affect the performance of your vehicle. Some high-quality fuels, like all three grades of Shell Nitrogen Enriched Gasolines, clean and protect critical engine parts from the build-up of gunk while you drive.”

So no matter where your epic summer drive takes you – the Cabot Trail, the TransCanada through the Rockies or through waving wheat fields of the prairies – these tools can help make sure that summer of 2011 delivers a road trip with the right kind of memories. www.newscanada.com

Along with your personal packing list, you’ll want to be equipped with a travel kit for your vehicle. Essentials include: a rechargeable flashlight, a blanket, non-perishable food and water, flares and a jumper cable for your battery, and the contact numbers for your insurance agency and your roadside service provider. For longer trips, it never hurts to have extra fluids in the trunk – just in case.

After months of fighting snow and wind, Canadians are gearing up for summer road trips. From a little kid tucked in the backseat heading to the cottage, to a group of friends loading up the car for a camping trip, almost every Canadian has an epic summer drive memory. Unfortunately, many also have memories of their vehicle being broken down on the side of the road with no help in sight. A little proactive maintenance is the first step for a worry-free trip. Schedule a full service check-up two weeks prior to hitting the road including a tune-up and fluid top-

up. Chances are during the winter months, you or your mechanic added more antifreeze to your radiator’s coolant mix to prevent it from freezing. In excessive amounts, antifreeze can actually reduce cooling efficiency, resulting in higher engine temperatures. Have your mechanic check the concentration and adjust or change the coolant if required. Help your engine perform at its best by filling your tank with a high-quality gasoline. “Gasoline primarily contains carbon and hydrogen molecules, and combustion can create a residue, called “gunk”, which is

Camp safe and smart this summer Summer is on its way and Canadians are waiting for the camping season. But before pitching a tent or lighting up the campfire, it’s important to keep some camping safety tips in mind. “Camping is a lot of fun, but it’s important to take extra care before heading outside and embracing the great outdoors,” explains Radha Bharania, spokesperson for Canadian Tire Retail. “Putting safety first will ensure that your camping experience leaves you with plenty of great summer memories.” Great camping comes from being well prepared. Keeping these tips in mind will keep the campsite fun and safe this summer:

=

You can never be too prepared, so be sure to pack a first–aid kit.

Camping checklist provides the “Dos and Don’ts” of camping Keep the spirit of summer camping light and fun without the worry of over packing, forgetting things at home or not knowing what to do once you arrive. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when planning your next summer camping trip.

• Do pack the essentials. This means having great gear that will keep your camping trip relaxing and fun for everyone. • Do have a tent that Consider items to help with bee stings, allergic reactions and cuts and scrapes.

=

It’s important to keep perishables cold, especially during the warm summer months. Make sure to store food in a cooler large enough for necessary items, such as the Coleman’s 50 QT wheeled stacker. You’ll want to keep the

cooler in the shade and minimize how often you open it to help extend ice life.

=

Keeping areas well lit keeps a campsite safe and allows for activities to go on long after the sun goes down. When stepping away from the group, campers should bring their own source of light with them. Coleman’s Quad

is easy to set–up and reliable to sleep in. Coleman’s line of instant tents set up in 60 seconds, leaving more time for relaxing.

• Do ensure that your food is kept cold and safe. Coleman’s coolers keep food fresh and are easy to stack for convenient transportation to and from the campsite. • Don’t rely on just the campfire to cook your meals. Leave the fire for marshmallow roasting and use a powerful grill to prepare

your favourite meals.

• Don’t attempt to do anything around the campsite at night without proper lighting. A great lantern will provide light all night once the sun has gone down. • Don’t forget to plan some activities for when you get there. Splashing in the lake with inflatable beach toys gets everyone in the spirit of summer. www.newscanada.com

lantern has four sections that detach, allowing explorers to take a section with them when they venture away.

=

Practice fire safety. Always surround the fire with a ring of rocks, and never build it near tents or other flammable items.

Get your wheels ready for the heat To keep that engine purring this summer, follow these tips: Tire Talk: Get the snows off first – they’re not made for hot summer conditions. Check your tire pressure frequently, as this assures the best contact between the tire and the road. You’ll find correct tire pressures listed in your owner’s manual. Properly inflated tires will also last longer and improve gas mileage. Summer Oil: Most vehicles perform better in summer with a different grade of oil. Here again your owner’s manual is your guide. If you have a dealership or local garage perform the oil change, ask what type and viscosity of oil they are putting into your vehicle. There’s nothing more important than a regular oil change for the long-term health of your vehicle.

Wipers and Blades: Visibility is important any time, and in summer you’ve got bugs to contend with. Wiper blades only last a year or so, so check to see that they’re still making full contact with the windshield. Ensure you’re topped up with summer windshield fluid, and consider using one that helps remove bugs from the glass.

Kal Lake Beach

Don’t Boil Over: The ideal mix in your radiator is 50% water, 50% coolant. You can buy an inexpensive tester at any auto supply store. If the balance is off, simply adjust with water or coolant. There’s nothing worse than being stuck at the side of the road on a hot summer day.

Five tips for summer boating safety Canada is blessed with more fresh water than anywhere on the planet, and our lakes and rivers are favourite places for summer recreation. The ice is barely out before millions of Canadians are taking their boats out for fishing, water-skiing, tubing or just a leisurely cruise through beautiful northern scenery. Operating a boat is tons of fun, but it is serious business too, so please consider these boating safety tips. Jacket required: By law you may not have to wear a lifejacket – just have one in the boat for everyone onboard – but 90% of people who drown aren’t wearing a lifejacket. Today’s lightweight, vest-style lifejackets are much more comfortable than the clumsy versions of the past. Sober second thoughts: Attitudes and rules about drinking and boating have changed significantly, but a large percentage of serious boating accidents still involve alcohol. A cold drink on a hot summer day is a great thing, but operating a boat under the influence is a mistake you could regret forever.

Testing, testing: All Canadians are required by federal law to carry a boating licence when operating a powered water craft. Getting the licence means successfully completing a multiple choice exam. A little knowledge can take you a long way. On the rocks: Many Canadian lakes are full of hazards, including rocks and trees. Knowing the waters and respecting markers are essential safety tactics. No wake zone: There’s lots of room to move in Canadian waters. But smart safety means slowing down when near other boats, swimmers, and those enjoying the water.

Making a splash with water safety * PFDs are not one size fits all. Stearns Ste can help suit up the th whole family by offering of a variety of infan infant, child, youth and adult PDFs.

As the weather warms up for summer, Canadians are anxious to dive right in. Lazy afternoons by the pool or lake adventures at the cottage are some of the ways Canadians cool off on those hot summer days. But before taking your first dip, it’s important to remember some tips on how to incorporate water safety into your summer.

* PFDs should fit snugly and not ride up over your ears. If there is more than 7.6 cm of space between the top of your PFD and your shoulder, it’s too big. * Children’s PFDs should feature head support and have a safety strap that goes between the legs, to prevent the device from slipping over their head.

“Summer brings no shortage of ways to have fun in the water,” says Pat Gray, director of marketing at Stearns Canada. “It’s important to remind Canadians to keep safety top of mind by investing in a PFD and buckling up whenever taking part in water activities.”

* All water activities require the use of personal flotation devices (PFDs). Stearns offers a wide variety of fun, brightly coloured PFDs that meet all Canadian PFD safety standards.

Whether you plan to spend your summer lounging by the pool, cruising around the lake in a boat, or splashing around at the beach, here are some tips to help keep you and your family safe:

* Find a PFD that you’re proud of. With so many different styles and designs, finding a fun PFD that you’ll be proud to sport, like those made by Stearns, is easy.

* Parents should remember that a PFD is not a replacement for safe water supervision. Be sure to set a good example by wearing a PFD yourself and make sure little ones are within an arm’s reach at all times when around the water. * PFDs keep you floating. So even if you’re a good swimmer, a PFD helps you avoid getting too tired. www.newscanada.com

Are you ready to purchase a motorcycle? Before making your purchase, keep these tips in mind

While true motorcycle aficionados will ride their bike regardless of the weather, most Canadians shop for a motorcycle in spring and summer. With today being Father’s Day, indulging in a nice cruiser, sport motorcycle, touring motorcycle or dual sport might seem like a good idea – and a deserved treat. Before you jump ahead and buy on impulse, make sure you research your purchase properly. A 2010 survey reveals that while Honda, Yamaha, and Harley–Davidson are top online searches, most buyers spend approximately three months searching for the perfect ride before making their purchase. Most people selling or purchasing a motorcycle have an intimate

relationship with their bike. Most people consider that purchasing a motorcycle is a dream they’ve always wanted to accomplish. To avoid any bad surprises, you should prepare for your purchase and make sure that your emotions don’t control the purchasing decision.” The following tips should help you keep both feet on the ground – until your next motorcycle ride, of course: Ask questions – Don’t be afraid to ask the seller how many miles are on the motorcycle, if it is still under warranty, or recent maintenance or repairs completed, with information on the quality and age of replacement parts.

Set your budget – While prices differ according to the make, model and year of the motorcycle, the average price is about $10,000. This should not be the only consideration though: make sure you also plan for maintenance and insurance fees as well. Identify your needs – Ask yourself what you will use your motorcycle for: will it be to drive on the highway, in the city or for cross–country? Are you looking for comfort, or is speed and performance your main focus? Remember to also consider your height and weight – one size doesn’t fit all.

Make sure your have the proper driving license – To drive a motorcycle, you’ll need a license – and a helmet. There are different types of licenses depending on which motorcycle you’d like to drive, so make sure you take all necessary courses and accreditations before hitting the road.

cle online on a classifieds site or at a dealership, it’s important to meet the seller, see the motorcycle, and try it – even if it’s just in the parking lot. Make sure you’re properly insured and are licensed though.

Meet the seller in person – Whether buying a motorcy-
