Not your average walk in the park Get your adrenaline pumping this summer and pay a visit to one of the best mountain bike playgrounds in the world. With Bike Park Director Cam Sorensen into his 6th year of managing the growth and development of the mountain bike trail network at Silver Star he has been able to oversee, plan, and sculpt the lush loamy sub-alpine forest into the web of his dreams. Thankfully Cam is an excellent rider, avid traveller, and tireless worker so he has been there, done that, and put it into place at the resort. The results of countless hours of both machine and back breaking labour from a crew of 3 to 5 passionate trail builders is on the mountain and can really only be appreciated from the seat of a freeride mountain bike. “We are now up to a count of 17 trails all accessed by the Comet 6-Pack Express” says Cam “and the part I’m most proud of is that we have built something for everyone.” That is a unique feature of the Silver Star Bike Park. With a great mix of ski runs for all ages and abilities in the winter months it was important for them that the summer product followed suit. “We have trails where you can go
all out and hit big big jumps… Rockstar and Pro-Star, the latter of which is being expanded this season” said Michael Sherwood, Silver Star GM “but we also listened to what people were telling us and they wanted trails without huge consequences if you crash, trails to sharpen your skills, and trails you can start off riding slow and gradually increase your speed without having someone barreling down behind you.” The people coming to Silver Star reflect the attention they have paid to the feedback. On any given day you’ll see 15 year old ‘dirt jumpers’, 30 some-
thing professional couples, a silver haired boy’s trip from Alberta, and a bunch of ladies (of unspoken age) from Vancouver celebrating the final days of single life for one of their friends. The atmosphere on the trails is unpretentious and everyone is having a good time. Most customers to the Bike Park come ready to roll, but the Okanagan Valley is host to thousands of tourists in the summer that have come to the region with other pursuits in mind. “Mountain biking is great when the beach is not and that is why the rental shop has over 60 bikes on hand with a full complement of protective gear” Says Cam Forbes, Rental Shop Manager. “People can get a lift ticket for two chairlift rides, bike and helmet rental, and head out on to the easier trails for as little as $63 or you can take the Platinum package with all the bells and whistles for $148 for the full day.” The resort has coordinated Bike Camps for all ages and abilities (see page 13) and offers guided tours of the bike park for $20 for the first person and $10 per person after that. These must be booked in advance by calling 250-558-6095 or by emailing

The weekend of July 23 & 24, 2011, the ‘mountain will meet the music’ when Vernon’s very own Rarearth Music Festival www.rarearthmusic.com will be hosted by Silver Star Mountain Resort. “we are thrilled to have the festival at one of the most highly respected mountain resorts in Canada”, says Executive Director Kath Raeber … “what an amazing way for all of us ‘Vernonites’ to be able to show off to the world, what we’ve got in our own backyard”. The festival will bring with it an action packed, fun-filled, family weekend of non-stop music starting at 11:00 am on Saturday, the 23rd of July, featuring young musicians on ‘Stage Right’. Stage Right was set up to promote children aged 8-18 who auditioned for and/or won the highly successful Our Kids Have Talent competition where talented young stars vie for prizes and cash in excess of $15,000. Over the past 3 years, this positive initiative has given over 250 children the opportunity to further their musical careers and the Rarearth Music Festival is very proud to include them on the roster at the festival each year. With all that Silver Star has to offer such as camping (hot showers), RV sites, family festival accommodation rates, Berries & Bears or Mountain Wildflower Tours, scenic chairlift rides, horseback riding, mountain biking all within a setting that leaves you breathless.

The festival not only offers two solid days of music but also shuttle service, pet sitting, Wine Tour Packages (MJO Wine Tours), food vendors and artisans. The music is a diverse mixture of all genres sure to please the ear of all music lovers. From Vernon’s own Jodi Pederson who will create the mood with a collage of folk, rock & pop, the soul, jazz and funk groove of Skyla J & the Vibes, ‘rockin’ blues with the Okanagan’s favorite Blues Man ‘Poppa Dawg’, RedFish with their intoxicating blend of soulful, hard edged rock, a completely different feel when Wassabi Duo hits the stage with pop, rock, hip-hop, roots, reggae, funk and everything in between (special guest Bobby Bovenzi and his powerful drumming extravaganza) to the one and only Brickhouse! … who will take the stage to close off the evening and is said to be one of the ‘hardest working bands’ on the circuit and who promise to “rock our socks off”, but that’s not all … there’s a full on jam band at the ‘Saloon’ as well as an acoustic jam at Bulldog’s Pub after the festival on Saturday night. Bobbi Bovenzi’s World Beat Events Drumming Group will summon festival seekers for miles as he opens Day 2, Rarearth’s Festival Organizer Kath Raeber will bring her own sultry blues style where Kath and the Tomkats will play with guest Mr. Henry Piovesan, from Vancouver Steve Kozak & the WestCoast All-Stars where his roots music will get you all ready for an explosion of talent with 2 time Juno Award Winner Greg Sczebel and who took 8 of the 9 awards at the BC Interior Music Awards this year, will grace the stage on Sunday along with Las Vegas Entertainer David ‘the Saxman’ Brown whose unique ‘overblow ‘ technique on the sax and powerful stage presence promises to get you up dancing in ready for the ‘Aussies’ – the Mason Rack Band on tour with a sound that will leave you speechless and in awe of a voice that takes you down into the Mississippi Bayou with his soulful lyrics. Delhi to Dublin provide a unique blend of ‘Breakbeat, Celtic and Electronics’ where India meets Ireland with upbeat, “impossible to sit down” music. The Rarearth Festival promises you memory making history at Silver Star Mountain Resort from the moment you arrive to the moment you say good-bye to us. We want you to have an amazing time, do a ‘stay-cation’ in your own back yard – bring your family, your friends and just enjoy. Fantastic food, amazing artisans, incredible music, a wide variety of other activities, anything you ask for in the way of accommodation, and a view that will leave you grateful for the experience you’ve just had on our ‘rare piece of earth’. Show runs from 10 a.m. both Saturday July 23 and Sunday July 24th and goes until 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $100 for an adult 2 day pass or $60 for Saturday and $50 for Sunday. Silver Star’s Wedding Bliss Sometimes, the moments we treasure most are the ones we cannot explain. Sometimes, the memories are so vivid closing your eyes takes you back instantly. Sometimes, these moments just happen, no warning necessary. Other times, like your wedding day there are endless hours of careful planning behind the scenes that create the magic memories every little princess dreams about. One of the most important decisions is location, and for this, Silver Star is hard to beat. Quickly building a reputation as a premier wedding location in both Summer and Winter, Silver Star’s majestic backgrounds, cool mountain air and professional team are all ready and waiting to make your special day full of truly unforgettable moments. “Mother Nature does a fantastic job, painting a gorgeous background that’s so unique to Silver Star” comments Anna Tilly, groups manager at the resort. “the different vantage points throughout the resort provide outstanding photo and recently the majestic Firelight Lodge steps. In the winter, opportunities and a real treat for your guests” notes Tilly. the ‘Winter Wedding Meadow’ is the most popular. “These Popular ceremony venues are the gazebo in the summertime romantic venues have been specifically chosen to provide our wedding couples with the best possible views in tranquil spots that are easy to access for their guests.” A couple married recently on the very bridge that held a very special significance in them first getting together – for the full love story YOUR COMMUNITY FOOD MARKET go to www.facebook.com/WeddingsSilverStar. 4803 Pleasant Valley Road

The resort is gaining a well-deserved reputation not just for their scenery but for their attention to detail in the planning stages. “Weddings take an enormous amount of planning, as any woman will tell you,” laughs Tilly. “Let’s face it, wedding planning isn’t a “guy thing.” They may take an interest in their own stag, but when it comes to picking flowers, invitations, wines, and desserts, the best laid plans are left in the hands of the bride. That’s where Tilly and Jenny Winberg of the Silver Star groups department come in and lend a hand – Actually 4 hands and any more they call into the ‘line of duty’ when needed. “After so many weddings we are constantly building our pool of contacts for florists, bakers and cake makers, wedding gown stores, beauty and cosmetic suppliers, dance lessons, equipment rental, chocolatiers and formal dress wear” comments Tilly. Their focus is on providing a one stop wedding service, taking the pressure off and allowing the bride and groom to enjoy both the planning and the big day, stress free. “You name it and we’ll find a contact for whatever our wedding clients’ desire” says Tilly.
Sunday, July 3, 2011 - Silver Star Magazine S7
The resort can accommodate smaller weddings with as few as 40 guests or less to larger gatherings of 320 — with the help of Silver Star Club Resort. “Besides the natural beauty of the setting, we boast one of the Okanagan’s best intimate restaurants,” points out Tilly, referring to The Silver Grill Steak and Chop House. The restaurant prides itself on using only the freshest local produce and meats, paired with Okanagan wines. Tilly said Silver Star and her co-workers also have an advantage in dealing with large groups and wedding planning, since the resort plays home to more than 300,000 guests every winter. “It really helps having options for both the ceremony and the reception – big or small in size or budget, we can make it work” says Tilly. The groups department has recently put together two summer wedding packages, designed at helping to keep things simple and affordable. Their 40 guest option starts at only $3400 and includes: • Use of wedding gazebo with 40 white chairs • Welcome mimosa on arrival at the reception • 3 course plated reception dinner • Glass of Okanagan wine with dinner • Glass of bubbly to toast the happy couple • Exclusive use of the Silver Grill Steak and Chop House venue for your wedding day • Cash bar for guests • Cake cutting service • 3 scenic chairlift tickets for the happy couple and photographer They also have a package based on 60 guests starting from only $5650. Accommodation specials are also available upon request. They recently launched the Silver Star weddings page on Facebook where they are already posting wedding tips, inspirational photos from weddings around the world, contributions from local suppliers and information on wedding specials for both summer and winter. www.facebook.com/ WeddingsSilverStar For more information, quotes or to view their online wedding book see online at www.skisilverstar.com or contact the groups department on groups@skisilverstar. com or (250 558 6043)

Goat cheese…goat’s milk…”get his goat”…but Goat Style, never heard of that. A new event will be hosted this summer at Silver Star called the Goat Style Bike Festival. This event is a first of its kind in the Okanagan and something that everyone in the Silver Star community is really looking forward to. Goat Style Bike Festival is easiest to describe as a mini Crankworx, the famous event hosted in Whistler every summer. The event has a reputation known worldwide in the mountain biking industry and culture. For its first five years, beautiful Creston, BC, played host to the Goat Style event and now for 2011, Goat Style will settle into its new home here at Silver Star Mountain Resort. The event takes place August 11-13 and is going to be a super fun free ride mountain bike festival. The new Goat Style site will be located just outside the mountain village on the lower section of ‘Milky Way’ a main ski run in the winter time. Sandwiched between Pinnacles Rd. at the top and Cross Mountain trail at the bottom, the organizers of Goat Style have lots of room to play with to build a really creative and fun slopestyle course for the riders to enjoy. 200 mountain bikers are expected to compete in this year’s event which will be the largest number of competitors to date. The Goat Style weekend will make Silver Star village the place to be and be seen. A bike industry expo, featuring new bike products in the village, bike trials show by trials biker extraordinaire Ryan Leech, Camp of Champions air bag jump site and intrigu-
ing night events as well. Goat Style’s Slope Style event is the highlight of the festival on the Saturday afternoon. The world’s best riders will showcase why they’re at the top of the heap. Up and comers will throw down crazier tricks then ever thought to be possible…giving you a reason to believe why they’re “what’s next”. And let’s not forget about ‘Friday Night Lights’, an event created to make you scream. A selected group of elite riders will display tricks far beyond your imagination…under the lights. From its conception, and every year since, ‘Friday Night Lights’ has literally stolen the show, and raised the bar of intensity at Goat Style. Goat Style is a member of the Freeride Mountain Bike world tour. Winners of the Senior Open (pro) category will have a chance to nab points for the overall FMB Title. Schedule of events: • August 11 – Slopestyle practice and industry expo • August 12 – Slopestyle qualifying, industry expo, Camp of Champions Jump bag and Friday night lights dirty jump comp • August 13 – Slopestyle finals – the main event, Ryan Leech trials show, Camp of Champions Jump bag, industry expo and after party in the Saloon! This is a weekend of mountain biking that is just too good to be missed! See everyone there! Visit www.goatstyle.ca or www.skisilverstar.com for more information.

Ian Galbraith, summer business manager for Silver Star, is pumped to be able to bring Fox on board. “We have one of the best bike parks in B.C. and now we are partnered with one of the best mountain bike brands in the business,” said Galbraith. “This is a huge step for Silver Star to offer an even greater product to our customers.” Visitors to the rental shop will walk out geared up in high caliber Fox gear, including Fox gloves, Fox Launch Pro knee/ shin guards, Titan Pro elbow guards, Titan Sport sleeveless protector, and the Rampage or V3R helmet. Kids/youth won’t miss out either. Fox is providing the highest end youth packages going, complete with V1 riding helmets. Greg Fox, vice president of sales for Fox USA, said he is eager to associate his brand with Silver Star Bike Park.“I’m stoked that Fox is now working directly with Silver Star’s Bike Park in providing protective gear for rental on the hill. Bike Camps at Silver Star Bike parks are a great place to learn how to ride a bike, and even better place to learn how to ride a bike better. Using the same trail indication as we do in the winter time, green, blue, black and double black, all the bike trails at Silver Star are classified so you know what to expect when riding them. This summer the Bike Park is featuring a variety of mountain bike camps to suit every level of rider. Whether you’re new to mountain biking or a seasoned biker looking to increase your confidence and skill, Silver Star’s Bike camps can definitely help. You can meet new friends that ride at your level in some of our group camps or if you are looking for that one-onone attention you can book a personal lesson with one of
our coaches for anywhere from one and a half hours to a full day camp. Private Camps: 1.5 Hours (You choose the time) - $60 - This camp is the perfect brush up course if you’re a little rusty on a bike. Ride with your private coach for an hour-and-a-half and work on some technical riding and gain some confidence and then head out on your own to practice what you’ve learned. Up to two friends can join for $20 each, a maximum of three in total. Full Day - 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. - $169 These six-hour coaching sessions are designed to take your ability to the next level, whether you are looking to conquer a blue trail,
cornering in berms, riding some skinnies and ramps, or just want to have priority lift line with your coach. Up to two friends can join for $59 each, a maximum of three in total. Beyond Bikes
It’s not only mountain biking that makes Silver Star so popular in the summer months. Scenic chairlift rides, hiking and horseback trail rides all draw guests from the Okanagan and beyond to experience the breathtaking scenery in Silver Star Provincial Park. From late June through September, Silver Star sees many guests making the most of their back yard, just 25 minutes from Vernon, and after one visit you can understand why. “The use of the hiking trails at Silver Star Mountain Resort is complimentary, we just ask you to stop by Ski Dazzle and pick up a free ticket” comments Robin Baycroft, Resort Services Manager for Silver Star. Hiking trails are accessible right from the village although there is the option to take a chairlift ride to the summit and hike your way down. Use of the Comet Express SixPack or the Summit Chairlift does require a ticket, which may be purchased from the in-resort village ticket office located within Ski Dazzle. Prices are $12 for an adult and $9 for a child. The Summit chairlift, true to its name transports passenger’s right to the peak of Silver Star, perfect for a picnic and a stroll back down to the village. The hiking trails provide great access to wildflower meadows, bird watching, and breathtaking scenery. “It’s a great way to get out and enjoy fresh mountain air filled with fragrant wildflowers” continues Baycroft. The Summit Chairlift runs from noon until 4:00 p.m. every Friday through Sunday.
The Comet Express Six-Pack runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Silver Star is abundant with wildlife from grey and stellar jays, woodpeckers and hawks to deer, weasels, lynx and of course black bears. Roseanne Van Ee from Outdoor Discoveries hosts award winning nature tours around Silver Star Mountain sharing its colorful nature and history. Roseanne’s knowledge of local flora and fauna is matched only by her enthusiasm. Her Mountain Wildflower tour journeys past an abandoned Silver Star mine and her Bears and Berries tour allows for taste testing some of the black bears favorite foods. Tours run Monday through Saturday from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. for the wildflower tour and Thursday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for the Bears and Berries. Prices and details online at www.skisilverstar.com For a unique perspective of Silver Star climb on up, literally. In its second year of operation Silver Star Trail Rides have been popular with young and old alike. “It’s a great experience, and the team does a fantastic job at making everyone feel comfortable no matter their experience with horses” comments Baycroft. They say there’s something in the freedom and serenity on horseback and it would be hard to argue with the scenery they have to work with at Silver Star. One and two hour tours are offered seven days a week and can be booked through Ski Dazzle summer ticket office. With so much to do it’s no wonder Silver Star is a summer destination resort that is growing in popularity. As they say there’s something about the mountain air. Food & Beverage They don’t all run on adrenalin at Silver Star, as some prefer to enjoy the backdrop of natural beauty, quaint village and take a moment or many moments to smell the wildflowers. An iced cold beverage in the late afternoon sun is just as enjoyable after a day meandering through the pristine trails on foot or horseback or sifting through treasures in the many stores, as it is after a hard day mountain biking. Silver Star buzzes in the summer months with numerous dining options. The Saloon with its inviting atmosphere and historical pieces, Bugaboos Café where Frank will delight you with European and Canadian specialty pastries, ‘Isidore’s on Main St. is Swiss with a twist,’ The Bulldog Grande Café, an extension of the renowned Bulldog Amsterdam in a grand café setting with Silver Star’s only patio bar and new this year will be a weekend BBQ on Friday and Saturdays. “I was lucky enough to participate in the official taste testing team for the smokie selection and yes, we’re in for a treat” says Galbraith. Retail therapy is always a highlight and there’s plenty at
the resort. Don’t let the Ski Dazzle name fool you, as they carry this summer’s hottest fashions, treats, gifts and bike park accessories. With brands like Dakine, Fox, Smith, Oakley, Sombrio, Alpine Gear and Norco there’s plenty of selection from Bike jerseys, gloves, helmets and goggles to postcards, picture frames, logo wear and candy! Ski Dazzle is also the home of lift ticket sales, season’s passes, wildflower tour and horseback ride information and bookings. The Double Diamond Service shop is able to handle all your bike repairs and services right on the mountain! Aberdeen market is the place to go for all your grocery needs including fresh produce, gourmet meats, specialty foods, baked goods, video rentals and a great selection of local wines. Coldstream Dry Goods offer an exceptional collection of sportswear, gifts and souvenirs for the entire family and Valhalla Pure will outfit you in clothing and equipment designed for multi-sport activities – Perfect for summer in the Okanagan.
