VERNON PUBLIC ART GALLERY

JANUARY / MARCH 2018 VOL. 27, NO. 1

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

H

appy Holidays one and all from the VPAG team. It has been a great year for the gallery and we would like to thank all of our members, sponsors and donors who have helped to make it a successful year! Looking forward to 2018 we have a diverse line up of exhibitions scheduled to provide visitors with lots to explore and discover. Our first Opening Reception is scheduled for Jan. 11, featuring artists Briar Craig, Kevin Spetifore, Sage Sidley and Kama? collective group. Don’t forget Pinot & Paint and Art After Dark are coming in February, so mark your calendars and join us in the new year. I haven’t reported on the new facility for a while, but I am pleased to say progress is being made! The RDNO has hired Diamond Schmitt Architects to review all of the work done to date and propose some options in the new year which will provide solutions for not only the VPAG, but the museum as well. We are very excited to see the project moving forward and will keep you updated as things progress. With that in mind, please consider the gallery in your gift giving this season. Donations in the name of someone special, memberships, art rental, gift certificates are all great options and the Gallery Shop is receiving new products regularly! See you at the VPAG! Sincerely,

Dauna Kennedy Executive Director The Vernon Public Art Gallery

EXHIBITIONS

Briar Craig, Post Truth, 2017, UV screen print, 30 x 22 in

Kevin Jude Spetifore, Remembering Who I Am #4, 2017, collage, 30 x 30 in

January 4 - March 1, 2018 Briar Craig Words on Paper (and other things)

January 4 - March 9, 2018 Kevin Spetifore What’s Around the Corner?

This exhibition of text based artwork consists of monoprints, UV screen prints, flickering neon signs and a large magnetic board with words which can be manipulated by the viewers in order to create sentences and statements. The works highlight the concept of chance and accident as a strategic concept in creating works of art.

What’s Around the Corner? is an exhibition inspired by the formal elements of design and consists of a large geometric mural painted directly on the wall of the gallery complemented by small to midsize collages. Distilled to the basic simple design element – a line – Spetifore uses actual colour swatches of commercial paint products.

Upcoming Opening Receptions The Board of Directors and Executive Director, Dauna Kennedy invite you and a guest to the opening reception of Words on Paper (and other things) by Briar Craig, What’s Around the Corner? by Kevin Spetifore, Planes of View by Sage Sidley, and Appropriation by Kama? Aboriginal Art Collective at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Enjoy an evening of music, contemporary art, locally crafted beer, wine, 6 and appetizers, on Thursday, January 11, 2018, from 6 p.m – 8 p.m.

“I have found the club membership to be an awesome deal. I am lucky enough to travel for my work and to visit Toronto and Montreal to see my kids. My VPAG Club Membership paid for itself in 4 months and made me feel like a welcomed member of some fantastic art destinations!!! Les musee des beaux arts in Montreal, the MOMA in San franscico, and the national gallery in Quebec City. It’s truly your gateway to the art world (to paraphrase the Kelowna airport!)”
