VERNON PUBLIC ART GALLERY

MARCH / MAY 2018 VOL. 27, NO. 2

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

T

he Okanagan Print Triennial is a joint effort between the Vernon Public Art Gallery, the Kelowna Art Gallery and UBC Okanagan. The VPAG is happy to welcome back Sean Caulfield, the winner of the 2015 International OPT for a solo exhibition which will run concurrently with the OPT which is hosted this year by the Kelowna Art Gallery. Sean’s large scale prints are impressive in scale and content and I encourage you to visit his exhibition to learn about the winning techniques he utilizes in his print practice. Our SD 22 exhibitions Art From the Heart and Art & Soul provide the youth of our community with the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent within the walls of a professional art gallery. I’d like to thank Kal Tire for their ongoing support of our school programming through their sponsorship each year. I’d like to introduce our Intern Karal Hanek who will be working with the VPAG until May, reviewing and researching our permanent collection records. Karel comes to us from the University of Victoria. Did you know that the VPAG officially turns 50 this year? Although we are actually older than that, it has been 50 years since the VPAG was incorporated as a society and we want to celebrate! Stay tuned for more information on this significant milestone. Also, remember to save the date for Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts (July 18, 2018) and Riot on the Roof (August 25, 2018). These two very popular summer events are not to be missed! Should you like to contribute to either event beyond your attendance, please feel free to contact us regarding sponsorship or donation options. See you at the VPAG! Sincerely,

2

Dauna Kennedy Executive Director The Vernon Public Art Gallery

PROGRAMMING & EVENTS

Wednesday March 7, 2018 1:00 p.m. Discuss and Create

Monday March 26, 2018 10:00 a.m. Mini Artists

Are you unsure about what contemporary art is? Would you like to learn more about art and the role of a public art gallery? Do you feel intimidated about approaching the art gallery on your own but would like to learn more about the exhibits and artists? Then Discuss and Create is for you! This adult program is geared towards people that would like to learn and engage with art but have little to no experience and do not know where to start.

Mini Artists takes place on the last Monday of every month for a diverse exploration of art-making materials and age appropriate process-based art activities. Mini Artists is for kids ages 5 and under, parents must accompany children.

Drawing from Life This session will start off with a tour of the Sage Sidley’s installation Planes of View. Inspired by her installation which consists of large scale drawings, we will practice and work on our own drawing skills by drawing from life.

10

Fold and Paint This session will start off with a quick tour of the artworks in our annual elementary school exhibition Art from the Heart. Inspired by all the artworks made by different students, in different grades all using different media, we will experiment with paper, paint, and folding techniques to create our own abstract paintings.

“I have found the club membership to be an awesome deal. I am lucky enough to travel for my work and to visit Toronto and Montreal to see my kids. My VPAG Club Membership paid for itself in 4 months and made me feel like a welcomed member of some fantastic art destinations!!! Les musee des beaux arts in Montreal, the MOMA in San franscico, and the national gallery in Quebec City. It’s truly your gateway to the art world (to paraphrase the Kelowna airport!)”
