VERNON PUBLIC ART GALLERY VOL. 28, NO. 3
MAY-JULY 2019
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
On behalf of the Vernon Public Art Gallery, I’m thrilled we have the opportunity to present the work of select students from the University of British Columbia Okanagan’s BFA graduating class of 2019. This exhibition was developed by selecting pieces from the students final projects prior to graduation and highlights some of the top work coming out of our neighboring University. We are also pleased to present Before the Sun Goes Down by Todd Schulz and I Learned I Wasn’t Seeing Clearly by Gary Dewhurst. In our Community Gallery we will be featuring Through Our Eyes..., a group show in partnership with the Teen Junction Youth Centre. We hope you will join us on May 23 to celebrate with some of the artists. We are in the process of hiring out summer staff, so I encourage you to stop by the gallery and help make our new students feel welcome. Very important to our operations is our annual Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts! Please save the date July 17th and assist us in spreading the word about this sentimental seasonal event, which is being held this year at the Mackie Lake House. In terms of the new cultural facility, work continues in the background identifying and applying for grants as well as recruiting volunteers for the many campaign positions that will be available once we officially launch the campaign. Please contact me directly if you have any time to contribute to this important community project. Once again thank you to our sponsors and funders who help ensure we can continue to provide quality programming to our community.
See you at the VPAG!

TODD SCHULZ
BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN
Schulz will exhibit paintings executed in hard edge geometric abstraction. Schulz’s art practice is aligned with the movements known as Post-Painterly Abstraction and Non-Objective painting which emphasize visual structures devoid of signs of brush marks and a narrative. Before the Sun Goes Down alludes to the period at which the sun crosses the horizon. Often regarded as a magical time of day, it’s when colour and light appear to be most luminous and vibrant. Todd Schulz, “Before the Sun Goes Down” acrylic on canvas, 2019, 36” x 54”
GARY DEWHURST
I LEARNED I WASN’T SEEING CLEARLY Gary Dewhurst’s exhibition, I Learned I Wasn’t Seeing Clearly, consists of a suite of black and white photographs which address the topics of phenomenology of light and human perception of space.
