MAY/ JULY 2016
VOL. 25, NO. 3
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
I
t is with great pleasure that we present a body of work by senior Canadian artist Joyce Devlin. Some of you may remember her from her time here in Vernon early on in her career. Learning from the likes of Jack Shadbolt (Vancouver School of Arts, now Emily Carr) and Jesse Topham Brown, Devlin has had a long and successful career as an artist and currently resides in Ontario. The Vernon Public Art Gallery is fortunate to hold some of her pieces in our permanent collection, one which is of such significant size. We will be unveiling this painting to residents of the North Okanagan for the first time on May 26. At 6’x36’, Inside the Garden will make a rare appearance Inside the Garden, by Joyce Devlin within this exhibition for our visitors to enjoy. Accompanying this piece is a selection of works from throughout Devlin’s long career depicting her journey as an artist, specifically here in the North Okanagan. I highly encourage you to take in this exhibition along with Mackie Lake House’s artist in residence, Luis Fuentes from Peru and the UBCO’s BFA graduation exhibition, Stranger in Your Pocket. I’d like to express our thanks to everyone who helped bring these exhibitions to fruition. These particular exhibitions required the collaboration of many partners and we appreciate their contributions. I’d like to remind you that our Annual General Meeting will be taking place prior to the Opening Reception on May 26 at 5:30 pm. Please take the time to arrive a little early to take part in this important overview of the operations of the Vernon Public Art Gallery. As always, admission is by donation and we are open Monday-Saturday.
Dauna Kennedy Grant, Executive Director
