OCTOBER / DECEMBER 2017 VOL. 26, NO. 5

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

C

annabis, a controversial topic in our country right now with the proposition of legalization just around the corner in 2018. The VPAG would like to welcome you to our opening reception on October 19th to explore and discuss the issues of cannabis production through Tara Nicholson’s exhibition, Cultivate. This glimpse into the hidden realm of grow ops is seen through the lens of Nicholson’s camera, as she ventures into both legal and illegal operations and provides us with a view rarely seen by the public. Joining Nicholson at this opening reception is Ann Willsie, our Artist in Residence from the Mackie Lake House. Her exhibition titled 21 Days of Light was produced during her recent stay at this historic home. I’d like to thank the Mackie Lake House for this partnership which results in an annual exhibition each year. In November, the VPAG will present the work of our members. This annual tradition provides members of the gallery with the opportunity to exhibit up to two pieces of their work. Always a popular group show, this is the only exhibition where the works are available for sale with partial proceeds going to support the gallery. We thank the artists for their support through this show and encourage our visitors to come in quickly to get first choice at these great Christmas gift giving ideas. If it has a red dot beside it, then you missed it, it’s already sold! Fall is the time we reflect on the past year and look towards the year ahead. We hope you have enjoyed our exhibitions and programming during 2017 and will remember to renew your membership and if you are able, provide a donation which will be used to carry on our work in 2018. I look forward to seeing you at the galley! Sincerely,

Dauna Kennedy Executive Director The Vernon Public Art Gallery

EXHIBITIONS

Tara Nicholson: Grow Op (work in progress), 2015, c-print

October 19 - December 20, 2017 Tara Nicholson Cultivate Victoria-based artist Tara Nicholson’s latest body of large-scale photographs focus on the instigation of a dialogue about the nature of cannabis cultivation and its use in the light of proposed decriminalization of cannabis for recreational use by federal government planned for July 2018. Nicholson visited and photographed grow operations both licensed and unlicensed on Vancouver Island and the interior of BC in order to document the artificial environment created for the indoor cultivation of cannabis. The images capture various sites which were engineered to control the environment in which the plants are cultivated. Nicholson’s photographs portray almost laboratory-like conditions where the exposure to light during the day, amount of water, nutrients, air flow and venting are precisely controlled. Despite the fact that most of Nicholson’s

photographs are devoid of humans, in some images the viewer gets a glance of activities performed by people during the routine cycle of cannabis cultivation. Just like in her previous bodies of work, Nicholson documents the work spaces and people working there, whether in a small size cubicle grow op or a large warehouse-sized production. Tara Nicholson completed her BFA at Ryerson University and followed to complete her MFA at the Concordia University. She teaches art at the University of Victoria since graduating in 2010.

October 19 - December 20, 2017 Ann Willsie 21 Days of Light

November 9 - December 20, 2017 VPAG Member’s Exhibition For the Love Of Art

Ann Willsie was selected to be the 2018 Artist in Residence at the Mackie Lake House. For the 21 day residency, Willsie had a goal to produce 21 paintings which comprise her exhibition at the Vernon Public Art Gallery along with some sketches and works in progress.

VPAG creates an annual exhibition to showcase VPAG members and to present their works of art in a professional gallery setting, highlighting local artists working in a variety of mediums. Join us this year for an exciting new theme For the Love of Art and check out what local Vernon artists are creating! All artworks in For the Love of Art will be for sale and each piece will retail at $150.00 or less.

Willsie’s subject matter is rooted in the landscape representation, but in some instances, she focuses on some of its elements and creates more intimate views of plants and flowers, trees and grasses; other times she portrays the greatness of natural vistas of open landscapes and mountains. Her paintings capture the quality of light which is her guiding principle when making a painting. Her brushstrokes are somewhat gestural, jet controlled and deliberate. Willsie is a prolific artist and in addition to her creations in her studio, she has produced bodies of work directly on various sites in the en plein air settings.

Artist Talks An Artist Talk and presentation with Tara Nicholson will take place during the opening reception at the gallery on Thursday, October 19th. Admission is by donation. An Artist Talk and presentation with Ann Willsie will take place on Saturday, October 21st at 1 p.m at the gallery. Admission is by donation.
