EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
W
hat a great summer/fall season we have had here in Greater Vernon and specifically at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. The gallery has been a buzz of activity and the generosity and support coming forward from the community has been outstanding. Not only did Riot on the Roof have a record breaking turnout of close to 700 people, but our latest Art After Dark brought out a great new mix of people to experience what the gallery has to offer through this unique evening soirée that we host three Riot on the Roof 2015 times per year. Thank you to Woolley & Co. for sponsoring this event once again. Students from School District #22, will experience an improved art education program thanks to the addition of Kelsie Balehowsky as our part-time Education Coordinator. Some of you may have already met Kelsie in her additional role as Administration Assistant. Amber Powell has also joined us in her new role as Preparator. Please stop by the gallery and Sept. Art After Dark meet our new staff members! Please peruse the newsletter to see what we have coming up in the way of exhibitions and programming. Fast approaching is our annual members’ exhibition, so if you are so inclined be sure to submit your work of art as part of this group show. Come in and enjoy the holiday season with us at VPAG, the gift shop will be stocked with those special gifts for under the tree. Special member discount days will be in effect and I’m sure Laura will be putting out the hot chocolate on these days as well to warm you up from the cold. I hope to see you at the Gallery!

Topham Brown Memorial Gallery Carolina Sanchez de Bustamante: Self-Similarity October 22 - December 23, 2015
C
arolina Sanchez de Bustamante is Argentinean-born Vernon based artist working in ceramics, fibre, and installation. Her installation titled Self-Similarity addresses the issues connected to the interpretation of the human condition in general. The installation consists of approximately 100 anthropomorphic ceramic forms 24 inches high placed in the close proximity to each other in the center of the gallery space. Approximately up to a 1500 strands of optical fibres are suspended from the ceiling directly above the conglomeration of the figures which are illuminated by the coloured light. The optic fibres are in slight constant movement caused by the viewers walking by and by the constant flow of air from the air ducts in the gallery space. The moving and repeating patterns of light serve as a metaphor for fractal phenomena which repeat themselves on micro, but also on macro levels. In this sense the installation as a whole expresses the binary order related to the environment and the human condition. Opening reception is from 6 pm - 8 p.m on Thursday October 22, at the gallery.

he annual members’ exhibition titled Exposed! showcases artworks from VPAG Gallery members. The exhibition contains two and three dimensional works of art of modest sizes and is a celebration of creativity and artistic production by aspiring artists. The artwork will be available for purchase and part proceeds support ongoing exhibitions and programming at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. The Board of Directors and Executive Director Dauna Kennedy Grant invite you and a guest to the opening reception of Exposed! at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Enjoy an evening of contemporary art, music by Marv Machura, locally crafted beer and wine, and appetizers from 6 p.m - 8 p.m on Thursday November 12th at the gallery.

he Vernon Public Art Gallery is excited to announce the launch of our new and improved School Art Education Program. We are please to welcome artist and art educator Kelsie Balehowsky to the VPAG team as our Educational Coordinator. Having a designated Educational Coordinator allows us to offer more school tours through out the school year covering a variety of mediums and exhibitions. The tours target various areas of the BC Curriculum and are designed to promote critical thinking while responding to original works of art. “Involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills. Arts learning can also improve motivation, concentration, confidence, and teamwork. PROGRAMMING & EVENTS OCTOBER MONDAY OCTOBER 12TH THANKSGIVING DAY, GALLERY CLOSED THURSDAY OCTOBER 15TH LIVE MODEL DRAWING 11 A.M - 1 P.M No experience required, just bring your drawing materials of choice, easels are provided. Set to music in a private space, artists are welcome to draw without inhibition. Models are experienced, male and female, nude or draped. Participants must be over the age of 19. Sessions are limited to 12 participants. Preregistration required. $10 for members, $20 for non-members. Enjoy a coffee and tea break in the middle of the session with Gumtree Catering Cookies served.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 31ST FAMILY SATURDAY PAINTING THE SCREAM, 1 P.M Start off at the Art Gallery in costume at this spooky painting workshop and then hit the DVA Treat Trail! This month learn how to paint a spooky painting inspired by Edvard Munch’s
painting The Scream! Learn how to assess a painting style and create a matching colour palette. Parents are encouraged to participate. All materials supplied. Goody bags will be given out at the end of the workshop! Suggested ages 5+ •$5 for members and $7 for non-members. This month Family Saturday will be ending at 3:00 p.m rather than 3:30 p.m due to Halloween festivities

RECENT EVENTS SEPTEMBER FAMILY SATURDAY PRINTMAKING INSPIRED BY ROY HENRY VICKERS
W
e had a great turnout for the Family Saturday, Printmaking Inspired by Roy Henry Vickers on Saturday September 25th. Part of the Culture Days 2015 activity line-up, this workshop encouraged parents and children to practice beginner’s printmaking methods and use a printmaking press. The sold out class was full of parents and youth of all ages. We thank everyone that attended for participating in this workshop.

We will use paint and different materials such a wool and natural fibres to create a collaged holiday inspired version of Tom Thompson’s Jack Pine Painting. Parents are encouraged to participate All materials supplied. Suggested ages 5+ • $5 for members and $7 for non-members.

RECENT EVENTS ART AFTER DARK FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18, 2015

he Vernon Public Art Gallery would like to thank everyone that attended the most recent Art After Dark event at VPAG. We had a great mix of people attend, many who were new to the gallery. This event is a unique way to discover what the Vernon Public Art Gallery has to offer. The creative soirĂŠe features fun activities such as a Jeff Koons inspired balloon animal making station, exquisite corpse, and a photo booth. Guests enjoy a relaxed social environment while taking in the current exhibitions, enjoying food, beverage, and music. Thank you to Woolley & Co.
