DEAR DELEGATES

The South African Insurance Industry (SAIA) and its partner, the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) are once again delighted to welcome you back to the insurance industry flagship conference, the African Insurance Exchange (AIE) 2023. This conference has continued to claim a permanent spot in thousands of insurance professionals’ annual calendars, not only because it offers numerous networking opportunities, but also because of the relevance of the topics and issues lined-up for discussion.

As we once again converge at Sun City at the end of July 2023 to discuss some of the pertinent issues affecting our industry, there is a need for us all to remain cognisant of the fact that it is not the only industry afflicted by the myriad of challenges such as inflation, ever rising interest rates, supply chain challenges, and the rising commodity prices. The continuous rise in inflation has seen prices of replacement parts sharply increase, while supply chain challenges and transportation channel movements remain somewhat subdued. This has resulted in delays in the replacement parts import processes and, unfortunately longer waiting periods for clients.

South Africa has not been spared from these global challenges. In fact, they have also been exacerbated by an intense loadshedding regime that has resulted in hundreds of small and medium companies shut their doors permanently. These companies, as well as their employees have, in a way, been removed from participating within the economy. The results of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) indicate that the number of unemployed persons increased by 179 000 to 7,9 million during the first quarter of 2023. Additionally, the number of people who were not economically active remains at 13,2 million. Learning of these figures, one cannot help but be quite concerned of this high number of people who are not economically active, especially the youth.

The possibility that South Africa could suffer a partial - or even worse - total grid collapse has been viewed by most global reinsurers who partner with local insurers in carrying risks, as a likely event. This position taken by global reinsurers placed local insurers in a somewhat unpalatable position, as they had to withdraw this type of cover too for their clientele. However, we remain hopeful and trustful that our energy professionals at Eskom are working tirelessly to ensure that South Africa averts such likelihood.

Climate change continues to be yet another challenge for our industry as South Africa experiences one natural catastrophe after another. The KwaZulu Natal province has continued to experience serious flooding causing serious damage to property and loss of life for the last two years. While this is so, we have also experienced floods as well in the Eastern Cape area in the last few years. Other risks such as cyber security risks, a lack of maintenance to infrastructure by some municipalities remain significant.

All these issues seem like a daunting task and overwhelming. But we have been, and continue to be courageous, forging on in the face of adversity. As the non-life insurance industry, we continue to be called upon to assist policyholders to get back on their feet. Through all the challenges that have befallen our clients in the last few years, we worked closely with various stakeholders, including our service providers to ensure that we deliver on our promise to our clients.

I believe that you will enjoy the line-up of topical industry issues, challenges and risks that will be discussed in various exciting plenary and discussion sessions billed for this year’s event, and I hope that it is memorable for all of us.

Best wishes

MESSAGE from the IISA

On behalf of the Insurance Institute of South Africa, I would like to welcome you to the 2023 African Insurance Exchange. It’s wonderful to see how the industry has embraced this year’s event after the scepticism following the COVID-19 impact on in-person events.

This year’s theme – Collaborate. Cultivate. Create. – pays homage to our innovative approach to the ever-changing risks that face us as an industry, and indeed as a nation. It means that by working together we can build on what we have, while still being able to transform our industry to set the standard in the modern business environment.

As always, we have a cohort of extremely knowledgeable and experienced speakers and panellists lined up to share their expertise with us, either live at Sun City or via live-stream broadcast for our colleagues who can’t join us at the in-person event.

The diversity of our industry is reflected in the topics that will be discussed at conference. These range from issues centred around governance and climate change, to talks on mental health and cyber risk. There truly is something for everyone in this year’s line-up.

Our keynote speaker this year is Gift of the Givers founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, who will speak on ways in which insurance companies can partner with the government and NGOs in response to the effects of climate. We are also pleased to welcome former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ncguka as a guest speaker of honour. Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka will discuss the importance of investing in literacy in her capacity as chair of The Reading Panel.

Why we do what we do

As the IISA we strive to build capacity in the insurance industry through skills development and exposure to the profession of insurance. In so doing, we seek to reduce our country’s skills shortage and improve opportunities for employment and social security, ultimately contributing to the sustainability of the industry and the economy.

The African Insurance Exchange provides a conduit for insurance professionals to grow and learn together in keeping with the IISA’s purpose as outlined above. Bringing insurance professionals together on this scale can only help to raise the profile of the industry and remind us what it means to be part of it.

The organising committee has worked hard to put together a conference that is enjoyable and educational, with plenty of opportunity to network with old friends and make a few new ones. A big thanks to the team that worked tirelessly to put this conference together.

Finally, we are enormously grateful to our sponsors and exhibitors, without whom the 2023 African Insurance Exchange wouldn’t be possible. Whether you are attending in person or virtually, be sure to engage with sponsors and visit the exhibition hall during the conference.

We wish you a happy African Insurance Exchange!

Joining IISA can yield many great benefits for insurance professionals and companies.

Insurance professionals who are seeking to advance their careers and to gain a good standing within the industry, should definitely consider being accredited by a reputable industry professional body, such as the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA).

This is according to IISA CEO Thokozile Mahlangu, who notes that the institute is a professional body, recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), that certifies insurance professionals and provides relevant platforms and programmes that contribute to the mitigation of the skills dearth in the insurance industry and the financial services sector.

“IISA is the only professional body in South Africa in the life and non-life insurance industry. We provide accreditation for insurance professionals after they have completed their insurance qualifications or through the recognition of wealth of experience in insurance.” she says.

“Professional designations give one good standing within the insurance industry. It shows that you have qualifications and experience, and that you have met the professional standards that are approved by IISA.” Mahlangu adds that one of the benefits of obtaining specific insurance designations is that an insurance professional can demonstrate a high level of expertise and accomplishment in the profession, it sets one’s apart from the rest and indicates commitment to continuous professional development.

“There are variety of different types of insurance certifications and each one comes with a different set requirement for obtaining the accreditation.

Regardless of which insurance certification you choose to pursue, you will ultimately have to show mastery of that particular subject matter.”

Insurance professionals, she points out, would do well to remember that in the current competitive insurance landscape, career advancement requires evident effort, so being associated with a reputable industry, that exists for the upskilling and professionalisation of the sector, will go a long way towards opening doors for those seeking to climb the corporate ladder.

“Increasingly, employers are looking for self-starters, individuals who can self-manage and self-develop. They are looking for people who can take advantage of the resources at their disposal within their spaces of work and their industries. There has never been a better time for the ambitious and determined insurance professional to associate with a professional body such as the IISA,” says Mahlangu.

“There is no doubt that employers value professionals with membership to professional associations, as this proves you are serious about your professional development. It shows that you do not see your career as just a job but have long term investment aspirations.”

She adds that the benefits of belonging to IISA are numerous. Over and above the association with a reputable professional body, it also opens doors to networking and training opportunities with likeminded individuals, among others.

Mahlangu says the current unemployment crisis in the country should additionally serve as motivation for insurance professionals to set themselves apart and leverage whatever means are at their disposal to gain a competitive edge over their peers.

The IISA offers the following types of designation/ certification:

• Licentiateship: A Licentiate is a practicing professional who is capable of identifying clients’ needs through a comprehensive risk analysis process and, with a general view, is capable of understanding and applying the principles of the practice of insurance or analyse and review the applied principles of insurance or provide advice or guidance on insurance solutions. To qualify, an applicant must have practised within the insurance industry or financial services or related sector for at least one year and be employed within the insurance industry or related sector.

• Associateship: An Associate is a practicing professional who is capable of identifying clients’ needs through a comprehensive risk analysis process, within a specialist insurance environment and is capable of developing, conducting an analysis of the practice of insurance or provide guidance or an opinion on the practice of insurance or provide advice on insurance related solutions. To qualify, an applicant must have at least three years’ experience within the insurance industry, financial services, or related sector.

• Fellowship: A Fellow is a practicing professional who can demonstrate people’s skills or leadership skills in a particular

To qualify, an applicant must have Five years’ experience in insurance, financial services and or related sector and must have practiced as an Associate for at least one year.

IISA also offers a general membership category, as well as a student category, aimed at individuals who are studying towards an insurance qualification or a qualification that could be recognised for professional designations or a qualification as approved by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) for Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act purposes.

In addition to offering membership to insurance professionals, Mahlangu explains that IISA also offers corporate partnerships that provide organisations with affiliation to a professional body that delivers quality programmes that address the shortage of relevant skills in the industry and elevates the credibility and prestige of the insurance profession.

“Corporate partnership gives your organisation access to key professional development platforms. Being a corporate partner not only helps your staff stay ahead of professional development requirements, but also provides the necessary support to stay ahead of regulations and continuing professional development needs,” she says.

“Joining a professional association such as IISA comes with incredible benefits. It makes your professional life that much easier and smooth sailing, enabling you to get help as a member through networking and research. You’ll also get exclusive access to a number of invaluable

Why we all need to support the 2030 Reading Panel

While we gather to brainstorm the trajectory for the insurance and financial services industries at African Insurance Exchange 2023, we need to be mindful that without sustainability, our best efforts won’t yield our desired results. Sustainability in 2023 means considering the impact of poor literacy habits on young people. And a South African who needs no introduction for her commitment to improving the lives of young people has taken up the cause. Most importantly for us at AIE 2023, she’s gracing us with her wisdom at the forum.

Former Deputy President and current Chairperson of the 2030 Reading Panel Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka has brought together respected South African leaders to ponder the literacy challenge. After the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study revealed that 78% of children do not learn to read for meaning in any language by the age of 10 in South Africa, Dr MlamboNgcuka is on a mission to answer this question: “What needs to change for us to ensure that all children learn to read by 2030?”

The panel comprises 18 prominent leaders who’ll meet annually until 2030 to provide apolitical leadership to efforts to improve reading culture. Each year, progress against the 2030 goal will be reviewed with recommendations made to government. And while government has given its commitment to the cause, it’s unclear how South Africa will get there. That’s where organisations like the Graduate Institute of Financial Sciences (GIFS) come in.

GIFS, as a financial services thought leader, has already led a discussion on the impact of poor literacy on Corporate South Africa. The effect of that online conversation earlier this year has seen financial services companies implementing projects to improve literacy in-house, in surrounding communities and in employees’ personal spaces. Book club initiatives are starting, book collection drives are happening and more introspection is being done on the role that adults play in influencing their children’s attitudes towards
