INCORPORATING A FAMILY HEIRLOOM INTO A MODERN HOME By Monique Holland of Holland Custom Designs

M

y first experience with reupholstered furniture was watching my mom reupholster our living room sofa. I watched as she meticulously measured every inch of the sofa and over the next weeks how she cut out the fabric, made the piping for the cushions and wondered in amazement at the completed job. She took something old and made it new again! Over the years there would be many more events like this with me witnessing an antique wrought iron bed sanded down to remove rust and seeing it refinished to its original glory and an 80 year old storage chest being left with the blacksmith shop to repair the iron hinges and staining of the wood. To most this would be considered junk, but I watched in pure astonishment at the talent of these artisans & seamstresses around me. I learned many lessons from my family about using what you have, repurposing items and not being wasteful. When I got the first opportunity to create something new it was in art class. I still remember working tirelessly over months with my beloved art teacher to create a Mosaic cat using old floor tiles and marbles. As a young adult I was drawn to tailored clothing and loved inspecting garments to see how they were made, and I had a love of sewing clothing. When I got my first apartment, I decorated the place by purchasing items from numerous antique shops that lined Baltimore street and antique row on Howard Street. I never tired of visiting antique stores and yard sales to purchase unique items with the goal of repurposing them. It was through those early experiences that I realized I had real talent and a knack for taking literally someone’s discarded items and turning them into beautiful pieces to enjoy for years to come. I spent an entire life decorating homes of family and friends and found I was happiest when I was creating and decorating and that is the reason, I finally made the decision to become an Interior Decorator full time. During the time that I was taking a class with the New York Institute of Art and Design I received a call from Decorating Den Interiors asking if I wanted to purchase a franchise and come on board as a Designer. I was drawn to the fact that they had been in business for nearly 50 years and that they had a large depth of vendors for Designers to source products from.

Spotlight I am happiest when I am creating and the lessons I learned have transcended in a very meaningful way in my Designs. During my initial complimentary consultations which include a tour of the client’s home, I am always focused on existing pieces the clients love. Rather than discard everything in a space, I welcome the opportunity to design around existing pieces. Often heirloom or sentimental pieces can often be the inspiration for a complete room makeover. With my access to such a wide range of furnishings I can help them find the right kind of décor to complement and coordinate with heirloom as to make it the focal point of the space. Sometimes I am able to incorporate the pieces into the spaces they are currently in or make a recommendation on where the pieces could best be used elsewhere in the home. My clients appreciate that I am able to repurpose items they have which may have sentimental value to them.

Advice From The Designer I don’t really advise clients to “DIY.” The question I always ask a client, “Is saving money with “Do It Yourself” truly a good idea?”. Despite there being a ton of DIY refurbishing tips on the internet; I recommend clients utilize the skills and resources I offer to take [the clients’ space] to the next level by incorporating heirloom or sentimental pieces. I can sprinkle in new pieces to create a timeless design and quality that they can enjoy for many years to come. This includes elevating lifestyles and reflecting individual style. Your interior should be an extension of who you are. Repurposing pieces also reduces landfill waste and I can offer many sustainable products as well.

Who Is Monique Holland? Why did you decide to become a Designer? I have always been artistic and a lover of beauty, from fashion to the fine arts. After switching my major from fashion design to Business in college, I continued to work in real estate and worked with other Designers on repositioning properties by updating interior spaces to include office lobbies, multifamily clubhouses and a refurbishment of an entire hotel. During the end of my corporate career, I took some classes with the New York Institute of Art and Design and decided to design full time and opened my own business in June 2018. What is your favorite aspect of being a part of the design community? I love working with clients to make their design aspirations a reality no matter what their design style. I love sourcing wellmade furniture and being able to provide clients with beautiful spaces. I love seeing clients faces light up when their spaces finally reflect their “happy place”. What inspires you most when coming up with designs? As a designer my inspiration comes from the clients home as well as sincerely listening to their vision of what they like to see when we are completing a design style quiz. The inspiration could come from a room in the home, a piece of furniture, the landscaping or the style of the home.

Hurricane Maria Barreled Down Upon Puerto Rico Several countries around the world have been affected by devastating natural disasters in recent years. In September 2017, a devastating Category 4 Hurricane Maria barreled down upon Puerto Rico causing billions of dollars of damages with the effects of its war path lasting for years. Maria was the strongest hurricane in 90 years to impact the island. The devastation has turned into a full-scale humanitarian crisis. Organizations such as The Red Cross, Church Congregations, and other non-profits across the country have participated in rebuilding and recovery in Puerto Rico. One of the biggest challenges has been restoring electricity to many places across the island. Through the generous support of its many partners, the Red Cross has delivered over 2,700 generators to help power medical equipment and other needs. Even though it has been 2 years, support is still needed in terms of donations and community efforts. You can volunteer through organizations such as the Red Cross or Habitat For Humanity.

Australian Bushfires Ravaged The Countryside

Hurricane Dorian Swept Through The Bahamas Last year, in September 2019 Hurricane Dorian swept through the Bahamas causing grave damage as it went. It was known as the most devastating storm on record to ever strike the Bahamas. The storm was intense and prolonged due to heavy rainfall and winds. There was over 3 billion dollars worth of damage, many lives lost and thousands of homes destroyed. The Bahamas Disaster Relief Fund was set up by the Bahamian government to collect donations. Other organizations such as Global Giving, the Red Cross, the Grand Bahama Disaster Relief Foundation and many others. YachtAid Global coordinates yacht operators to ensure delivery of humanitarian aid and supplies to the affected area.

march 2020

A currently ongoing crisis is the crippling bushfires in Australia. These wild fires are the worst that Australia has seen in a decade. During the Australian summer, temperatures can rise to 120 degrees Farenheight coupled with a severe drought has brought on these fires. The strong winds have caused the fires to spread and caused damage and many deaths. There have been staggering numbers of wildlife-over half a billion animals-that have been wiped out due to fire. Many countries including the United States have sent firefighters and financial aid to Australia to help fight the blaze and those who have been displaced. Public figures, celebrities and citizens around the world have donated money and goods to help in the wake of these fires. Australia is at the peak of its summer season and these fires could last for months. Donations can be made to several organizations working toward victim relief and recovery, including the Australian Red Cross, Salvation Army Australia, the NSW Rural Fire Service, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society Australia. You can also help the devastated animal population by giving to wildlife rescue and treatment groups like WIRES, the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, and Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade Returns To King Street

Cherry Blossom Watch 2020: What Will The Forecast Say? On average Washington D.C.’s cherry blossoms bloom around the last week of March into the first week or April. It can also be a little before or after that period. This year, spring appears to be coming early, and all indications thus far point to an early bloom. Warmer temperatures in the late winter into early spring bring the blossoms out earlier. Cooler temperatures push them later. The flowers generally last a week or two, but again, just how long they stay around depends on the weather. The National Park Service will release their initial peak bloom forecast on March 4.

Belle View Shopping Center Redevelopment Nomination Submitted Held on the first Saturday of March, the parade—and accompanying Fun Dog Show— has become an annual tradition in Alexandria and a major boon for businesses in Old Town. The parade is held and organized by the Ballyshaners, a nonprofit organization that promotes and preserves Irish heritage in the city. This year, more than 2,000 people will march in the parade, including the Notre Dame Alumni Band, local dog rescue groups, pipe and drum bands, Irish dancers, historical re-enactors and other community groups.

22

Nominations submitted in the 2019–2020 South County Site-Specific Plan Amendment Process include a redevelopment proposal for the Belle View Shopping Center. That proposal calls for a mixed-use development to replace the shopping center, which had been constructed in 1959., Applicants could submit proposed comprehensive plan amendments to the Planning Commission office from September to December 2019 as part of the land use planning process. There were 26 nominations submitted, and 22 were accepted to undergo review in the Braddock, Lee, Mason, Mount Vernon and Springfield Supervisor Districts. The nomination request for the Belle View Shopping Center calls for replacing the 182,000-square-foot retail strip with a mixed-use space including grocery store, retail, multifamily residential and townhouses. There are three design options included with the nomination.

Worth The Drive Glen Gordon Manor is a hidden gem in the Shenandoah Valley

A romantic, relaxing getaway just a stone’s throw from the Metropolitan Area

D

ayn Smith and his wife, Nancy Moon fell in love with the Virginia countryside when they were visiting. “We owned several restaurants and lived in Puerto Rico. We wanted to raise our children in a quiet, relaxing environment. I am a chef and restaurantor; we thought opening our own inn would be a great lifestyle. We looked at a few inns in the area and we were not happy with the market. Glen Gordon had not been an inn previously. It was a family home and horse farm. It needed lots of renovating and we have renovated every single bathroom and room on the property,” Dayn says, “It

26

took until 2012 to open fully. We started with 4 rooms and now we are up to 12 rooms. There is the manor house and two cottages on the property. 5 rooms in the manor house and the cottages have several rooms.” This romantic destination offers a stunning venue for both large and small weddings alike. If a guest would like to host a medium to large size wedding, they will book the entire property for your party They also host small elopement packages from 2 to 12 people. From every window there are stunning views all around and a large scenic property with 46 acres to ex-

plore. “We have the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge so we have bigger mountains on one side and smaller mountains on the other side. We have a barn with retired show jumpers. People enjoying visiting the horses,” Dayn Smith says, “We also have free range chicken that provide us with eggs.” If you are looking from some rest and relaxation, the owners converted a portion of the barn into a luxury day spa. After many requests, they are also completing a fitness center for those who would like to keep up with their workout schedule. One of the most alluring things about the property is that you can stay in a

luxury suite and walk to dinner. In the wintertime we have fireplaces going. We have lots of seating to relax and read a book and play board games or cards. In the summertime we have a pool with great views of Shenandoah. “ At Glen Gordon Manor, luxury and delicious food are truly the name of the game. “We are a luxury country inn with a fine dining restaurant. We offer a 5-course seasonal prefix tasting menu. You can have a wine pairing, a bottle of wine, or choose from our premium bar. We have won a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for the last 5 years for our wine lists. We have over 450 wines from around the world,” Dayn says, “Of course, breakfast is included in our restaurant. From 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. our guests can enjoy a 3-course meal.” The most popular activity in the area is to visit wineries. Dayn offers, “The area is often called, “The Napa Valley of the East. We have 15 wineries nearby for guests to visit. There is also Shenandoah

National Park. For those who like to be active, there is lots of hiking, biking, canoeing and kayaking in the area.” Another unique activity is “gallery hopping” in which visitors can go on an artisan trail in Rappahannock County. “There are about 50 artists you can visit their galleries or studios in the area. There is also shopping and small towns with interesting histories.” In addition to gorgeous weddings and fantastic getaways, Glen Gordon Manor can hosts corporate retreats and meetings. In 2019, they hosted 15 corporate retreats in which they provide breakfast, lunch, dinner and breakout snacks. One of the most interesting things about Glen Gordon is that it is a family run business. Dayn Smith, his wife, Nancy Moon and their teenage sons all participate in running the operations. Dayn has been an Executive Chef since 1983 and is an expert at preparing excellent meals for large events such as retreats and weddings. Nancy is an registered

nurse and handles all a guest services as well decorating. She homeschools both of her sons, who also help in the kitchen and take cooking lessons as part of their education. If you are looking for a truly luxurious getaway, Glen Gordon Manor is the place to go. “It is really a great place to come and unplug. Even though it is very near to the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area it is a world way. Two days here can make you feel so relaxed and make you feel that you have been away for a long time without ever having to get on a plane and travel across the globe.”

A Tinder Date Inspired D.C.’s Newest Boxing Studio

WHAT SEEMS LIKE A SCRIPT OUT OF A MOVIE, IS THE BACKSTORY FOR WASHINGTON D.C.’S NEWEST BOXING GYM. TEXT KIMBERLY WILSON

HERE’S To HEALTH

W

ho would have thought a Tinder date would turn into business bliss for Angela Jennings and Reggie Smith? What seems like a script out of a movie, is the backstory for Washington D.C.’s newest (and Black owned) boxing gym — BOOMBOX Boxing Club. Even though their swipe right didn’t turn into a love match, their flame continued to burn because they both “shared a love for fitness” says co-founder Smith. He continues, “Whenever she’d come in New York or I’d come home to D.C. we’d work out together. That went on for a couple of years, and then finally one day we were sitting around talking about “what we wanted to do when we grow up.” And we decided we wanted to open up a fitness facility.” That fitness facility turn into BOOMBOX Boxing Club, which is a new boutique boxing studio in the Navy Yard area of Washington D.C. founded by their collective love for music, community, and boxing. Their motto: “box to the beat.”

When you walk through the doors you’ll be greeted by friendly staff, boxing memorabilia, portraits of hip-hop legends and even a boxing ring to get in a few rounds before or after class. In the workout room where classes are held, there are aqua bags suspended from the ceiling, which are easier to use for people that are learning proper boxing techniques.

“box to the beat”

Though a love for martial arts and boxing, Smith, a Vice President of Equity Research at JPMorgan and Jennings, a Senior Manager at Deloitte had no experience in fitness—let alone opening an entire gym. But with determination, grit and a whole lot of patience, they sought out to change the DC boxing game. “There are a gang of boxing concepts in New York,” says Smith. “And there were very few in D.C., so it seemed like a perfect setting. I thought if boxing can work with me in New York, it can work in D.C. And that was how it started.” After over a year of planning, the dream finally became a reality. Boombox opened its doors in July with Smith and Jennings as master trainers, and a loyal staff that has supported since the beginning (all of whom had no boxing experience either).

“We trained for about 4 months,” says Smith. “Our coaches, most of them for the first few months did not get paid. But they still came out twice a week. We were there on the weekends—training, practicing on getting up front, running the class, learning how to hear music, how to hear beats, an 8 count, etc. I love music, but I didn’t know an 8 count. Now I can hear a song. I can tell you when it’s about to transition and integrate that into the class. We had to learn all of that. “

The 50-minute BOOMBOX classes are music-driven and combine shadow boxing, aqua bag work, and functional training to burn fat and build lean muscle. But what makes BOOMBOX truly the special? The music of course. You can’t have a name like BOOMBOX and not have a fire playlist—which honestly and truly will make the 50 minutes feel like 5 (well, almost).

If you live in the District or are just visiting and haven’t been to BOOMBOX yet, add this to your 2020 checklist—ASAP. It’s the perfect way to work up a sweat to great music, with friends, family or even bae. And now that BOOMBOX is officially 6 months old, are you wondering what’s next for 2020? More classes, more merch and hopefully in the new future—more locations, such as Charlotte, Atlanta and Houston. Boombox-Boxing.com

Taylor’s resume boasts well over 1,000 performances and six full-length records released; his two most recent, “With Innocence” 2013 and “Go Amaze” 2016 both debuted in the Top 10 on the iTunes charts. 2017 was a studio year for Carson. Thanks to that, Carson released his 7th full-length record, “After the Tamer Has Gone” to critical acclaim in December 2018. “Tamer” debuted at #2 on the iTunes charts and has Carson getting back to his roots. From the delicate, “I Believe in You” which is a song Carson wrote for his daughter about never letting anything get in the way of her imagination. To “Josephine.” A story about a girl who leaves her small town to chase dreams and marquees in the big city. There is always something to fix, but that is surely not what wins out on “After the Tamer Has Gone.” TaylorCarson.com
