Alpha Remodeling & Construction, LLC The Alfaro Brothers, Salvador and Samuel, bring quality work to Bowie and the surrounding areas Article By Alyson Turner Photography by Tracey M. Connor

Alpha Remodeling & Construction, LLC is a familybusiness that learned its roots from its patriarch, [Mr. Alfaro Sr]. Salvador and Samuel Alfaro took what they learned from their father and started their own company in 2019, Alpha Remodeling & Construction, LLC. Their father was a farmer in his home country of El Salvador who came to the United States in the 1990s. He learned the construction trade

8

|

from a man named Tony who taught him all he knew. When so many businesses went under in 2008, he was laid off and went off on his own. He supported his family through construction work while teaching two of his sons, Salvador and Samuel what he knew about construction. They also learned how to write contracts, work with customers, and help with the daily aspects of the business. The brothers would also help with the language barrier translating things to English.

April 2022

These lessons stuck with Salvador and Samuel as they grew and pursued their own futures. Most importantly, the family learned that it is extremely important to do the work correctly so that it lasts. We spoke with Salvador to learn more about Alpha Remodeling & Construction, LLC and why homeowners should always hire someone that they trust to do their renovation projects correctly. “One thing [my father] always said was ‘Never take shortcuts, never run [from a project], you must always complete a project, and do your best. If someone wants you to take a shortcut then don’t do it at all. My dad was never able to grow his small business, but he was able to raise a family of 6 with his work. We learned from him; how to run the business and how to communicate with customers.” In 2019, Salvador and Sam decided to take a leap of faith to start their own construction and remodeling company after working in other fields which is how Alpha Remodeling & Construction, LLC was born. They have made it their mission that no matter the size of the project, big or small, they will always offer the highest quality products and service. Salvador tells us, “It is especially important to use the correct products for the correct things where many people try to cut corners. We go that extra mile to read the description of the project, understand what you are actually installing. For example, using the correct mortar. Where someone else might just grab any product, there are several different classes of mortar and you need to know which one to use for brick, for tile, for natural stone, etc. You need to be using the right products and the right tools instead of taking shortcuts,” Salvador says, “When we are building a deck, we are using the correct beams to make it sturdy and secure. When we are painting, we are making sure everything is covered and we aren’t dripping paint everywhere. For landscaping, we make sure we aren’t destroying people’s lawns and we always refill with top soil and grass seed if we have to disturb the grass in any way. Other people often fall back to the mindset of ‘I don’t care’, but we do these things right and make it last.” Alpha Remodeling & Construction started with small projects including replacing appliances. Then, they began expanding to larger projects such as patios and decks. Today, they have a long list of services they offer: Fence & Decks, Concrete & Masonry, Patios & Landscape, Complete Kitchen & Bathroom Renovation, Interior

& Exterior Painting, Flooring Installation, Frame & Drywall, Roof & Siding, Doors & Baseboards, Shed Assembly & Build, Tree Services, Gutters, and Welding. They pride themselves on their quality work and their customer service. “The customer is providing us with their trust and with their money to provide the best service for them. We try to imagine how we would feel if someone was working on our home. We care about the clients. Yes, we are here to make a living, but we are not taking shortcuts. We are not just taking your money. We do our best to keep our client’s home and property nice. It is the little things that make a difference and we focus on those details. We treat others how we would like to be treated,” Salvador says, “My brother and I have a very strong work ethic. Before starting our company, I was working 40 hours a week and attending college as a fulltime student. Sam was working 50 hours a week and doing side jobs. We always strive to do things on time and done right. If something doesn’t turn out right, we take it down and start over. We keep our workmanship quality up and as high as we can. If there is something that is incorrect or a mistake, we have no problem taking the entire project down to be done properly. [In addition to working hard], we always use quality tools. In 2020, we bought new trucks so that they would be reliable, and we also bought new tools so there would be no delays in our work. We did not want to have vehicles and tools that were unreliable and not able to get the job done.” Alpha Remodeling & Construction is a familyowned business deep in its roots. They work with their family members to create beautiful renovations and projects that withstand the test of time leaving customers satisfied. “Once we opened the company, we let our father know that he can now retire. In our Latino culture, we have a phrase “I’ll die working with my boots on.” [These days] My father still helps us oversee in the field and it feels good to work with our father side by side doing the things that he taught us. We are very-detail oriented and never take shortcuts. That is one of the things that makes us different from many other companies out there. A lot of places want to make quick and easy money. It is better for someone to say this is overkill than for the project to fall apart in a short time. We want things to be done better than what it was supposed to be and last for a long time. If there is ever anything that has to be fixed, we will fix it. If we come across something that had hidden or undiscovered damages, we let the customer know so it can be properly fixed. Other companies

April 2022

might do a cover up or a small fix. We let them know how much it will cost and how we can help out the customer in the best way that we can. No job is too small. From painting a bedroom to remodeling an entire home. We are always looking to improve and looking to become better. At the end of the day, we believe that if you can keep the customers happy and keep the people you work with happy your business will never have an issue of failing or losing money. If you focus on the customer happiness, you will always succeed. We want people to associate our name with quality. When you see Apple, you think reliable, when you see BMW you think luxury, when you think Alpha Remodeling and Construction, you will think top quality work.”

Alpha Remodeling & Construction, LLC’s Goals For 2022 We want our customers and others to see Alpha Remodeling & Construction as a top-quality company. The moment they see our logo we want them to say, ‘Yes, I know the Alfaro brothers and they do great work in Bowie and the areas around here. Another one of our goals is offer jobs to local people who have an amazing work ethic. We want to hire those who think like us and appreciate the fact that we are thankful when someone lets us know how we can improve because it helps us to become better. We hope to hire those who want to provide quality work and always improve their skills. We also hope to have a fleet of trucks to cover more areas, to be able to expand, to one day become a home building company, and in the future, a commercial contractor as well.

Arts & Entertainment BRENCORE

For so many people, music is soothing, it brings happiness, and fosters creativity. For Robert Smoot, the love of music led him to chase his dreams of being a live concert promoter and start his own entertainment company to bring music to people for concerts, tributes, private events, and more.

“I worked in the Federal Government and Private Industry as an IT Project Manager for 22 years. I realized that I loved music and wanted to pursue it as a career. I left that career to focus on BRENCORE Entertainment full-time in 2008. I knew that I was going to chase this dream and stepped out on faith,” Robert says, “In 2006, I started BRENCORE Entertainment. The name of the company, BRENCORE Entertainment is a combination of my son’s names BREN(T) and CORE(Y). When I started BRENCORE, my sons were just 14 and 11 years old. I wanted to leave a legacy for them. I named my company after them because I wanted something unique and recognizable. They are part of my business as well these days. Today, Brent now operates as my Lead Event Planner and DJ. Corey serves as my Marketing Director. I never thought I would be working in the Music Entertainment Industry and now I look up and it has been 16 years.” April 2022

Robert grew up in church singing and loves music. He would always go to music lounges to listen to the different artists and bands. He decided that he wanted to host his own events. In 2007, The Marriott Crystal Gateway BIN 1700 in Arlington, VA gave Robert an opportunity to host a Friday Night Live Jazz Night and the rest was history. The Friday Jazz Nights became very popular and a lot of people started attending from Maryland, DC, and Virginia. He would showcase a lot of the top local artists and bands there. It blossomed into an event where people would host their birthdays, retirement and graduations at the venue. When the economy crashed in 2008, Robert lost the BIN1700 project, but continued to promote events at various locations including the upscale The Carlyle Club in Alexandria, Virginia where he honed his craft in promoting high end Tribute concerts. “Today, BRENCORE Entertainment does it all for its clients. We put the events and concerts together with detailed planning and coordination. Our strong point is event planning with a focus on music. We develop and work with clients, put together contracts, complete the budgets, bookings and marketing the events. We execute the events from start to finish in a timely fashion. We work with the clients on identifying the needs for the events. We have done weddings, corporate and private events over the years,” Robert says, “We have sold out many venues such as The Historic Howard Theatre, The Carlyle Club, The Roanoke Rapids Theatre, and The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club to name a few. We work every year to provide entertainment to Maryland’s National Parks & Planning and other clients. I bring the music and good times; I am the producer and presenter for each event. I have years of experience in managing as well as , booking artists and I am currently managing my own Band “The BRENCORE ALLSTARS Band”.” BRENCORE is currently partnering with The Bowie Center for the Performing Arts to bring some of the Tribute concerts to the Bowie area including the “Tribute To The Music Concert Series”. The staple Tribute that travels across the country is the “Tribute To The Music of MOTOWN”. Robert tells us, “We are paying homage to these amazing MOTOWN artists over the years. We also have done many Tribute concerts to artists such as Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, Donny Hathaway, Patti Labelle, Luther Vandross and more.” Robert has been vital to reviving many music venues and has worked with National Artists such as Mike Phillips, Pieces of a Dream, Walter Beasley, Norman Connors, Frank McComb, and more. BRENCORE is currently working on a Jazz Benefit Festival entitled “JAZZ IN THE COUNTRY” featuring many National Artists at the Mount Bethel Retreat Center in King George, Virginia on Saturday, August 27th. Robert is also planning to do another BRENCORE Entertainment Presents “Music on The Seas Cruise” in 2023. The first cruise was a 7-Day Royal Caribbean Cruise to the Caribbean in 2019. Over 200 guests cruised with BRENCORE Entertainment where they hosted several events with a variety of popular bands and comedians including Brian Lenair, Faycez U Know, and The BRENCORE ALLSTARS Band. BRENCORE Entertainment is a true professional in the music and event planning industry. Their services include corporate events, weddings, retirement and graduation parties by offering live entertainment and more.

Spring Wedding Inspo Article By Nyah Marshall At last! The weather’s starting to break, flowers and trees are beginning to flourish and the days feel so much more longer! Finally, it feels like winter has passed and here comes Spring, bringing in new life, new joy and new expectations. With this being the very season that symbolizes renewal, it is no secret why Spring is a popular month for weddings. Your wedding marks the beginning of a new phase of your life and symbolically it seems as though Spring is the season that complements this life-changing event so well. The florals, pastel hues and garden-themed decorations associated with this wedding season are certainly favorites loved by soon-to-be wed couples everywhere. Spring weather is near-perfect for outdoor weddings and even indoor weddings looking to move the party outside. Sugar flower-adorned cakes, light fruity cocktails and grand, edible arrangements perfectly meshes with the aura of Spring. Who wouldn’t want to have their wedding during the Spring, it’s such a beautiful time of the year! If this wasn’t conniving enough, our Spring wedding mini look-book will be sure to convince you that Spring is a great season for a wedding. And for those already planning to have their wedding during the Spring time, here are some creative elements and designs that may inspire you!

Spring Color Palette One of the first places to start when planning an aesthetically pleasing wedding is to decide the color palette! Of course, the bride traditionally wears white, but what does she wear at the wedding reception? What colors are the tablecloths? What color dress do the bridesmaids wear? How is the cake decorated? These are questions that should start and end with aa succinct color palette that creates visually harmony and complements the season! Three color palettes that are trending right now for Spring Weddings are:

Pops of Green Green, a symbol of growth and fertility will inevitably end up in your Spring wedding decor. Green and white is probably one of the most trendy color combos this year because the simplicity of it makes a huge statement. The white complements the brides dress and makes the green pop like others can’t. Green could also become a subtle accent to your wedding. Pops of deep green on table cloths or centerpieces are bound to energize any wedding reception setup.

Pastel Hues and Deep Jewel Tones Everyone loves a good pastel palette. Think the colors of Easter, lavenders, spring greens, soft blues and blush. Accenting these colors with deeper jewel tones like gold, ivory and sliver will give any wedding that luxurious element. Some of our favorite combinations are spring green and ivory, lavender and gold, and, rose gold and blush.

April 2022

Classically Neutral and Earthy Through any and every season, neutrals are here to stay! Neutral hues, especially ivory, cream beige and champagne, go well with any wedding set-up. These colors are classy, clam and evoke a home-like feel. And for that bride-to-be that loves to sparkle and glam, neutrals pair perfectly with glitter.

Spring Wedding Flowers As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. Arguably one of the most important wedding decor components are the flowers. Some seasonal, readily available bloom that are ideal for Spring weddings are: Peonies, Amaranthus, Baby’s Breath, Hydrangeas, Succulents, Lilacs and Eucalyptus. Here’s a little more about two of our favorites!

Hydrangeas If you’ve already been searching for Spring wedding inspiration, you’ve probably noticed that hydrangeas are a staple when it comes to wedding flowers. They are minimalistic, but also gorgeous and much— a perfect added ezmeet to any model, romantic or even whimsical wedding. The standard hydrangea would be white or blue, but green, pink, red, and even purple blooms are available. Hydrangeas are in season late Spring throughout the Summer months.

Lilacs Soft, pastel hued lilacs seem to be beautifully created for Spring weddings. Lilacs are most available in northern states from mid- to latespring. The palette of flowers varies from roses to calla lilies and they can be natural or silk. One thing is for sure: lilacs will make any wedding beautiful and naturally fragranced

April 2022

Pretty Spring Wedding Cakes Another difficult component to planning a wedding is the wedding cake: what flavor(s) it should be, how big is too big and where it should be placed. When it comes to designing the best wedding cake for a wedding, looking to the season for inspiration can be a huge help. You can easily make any traditional wedding cake look a little more like Spring by adding a little more than just flowers. Here’s some inspiration! Ever thought about placing the wedding cake on a unique stand, like this garden-inspired cake stand swing. Cascading florals will add some drama (the good kind) to your wedding setup. Opting out for a less traditional one, and adding fresh fruit to your wedding cake is a fun idea that’s perfect for the Spring time.

Signature Spring Cocktails The fun part about Spring that we’ve all been waiting for— fruity cocktails! Fruity cocktails like margaritas and cosmos, and white wine sangrias are, of course, at the top of the drink lists for Spring weddings. Not only do they pair amazing with light meals that feature citrus, honey and berries, but they look like fun, creative wedding accents placed on serving platters. Some fun, tasty drinks that complement a Spring wedding are: • Spiked Lilac Lemonade • Chamomile Collins • Strawberry Hibiscus Ginger Margarita

Stellar Centerpieces Last but not least, when mapping out how your reception table will look, finding a centerpiece that brings together the entire theme is essential. Whether you’re going for a garden-inspired reception or a classic one, a great centerpiece will stand out in your shots and take your guests’ breath away. Cherry blossoms are one of the ultimate symbols of springtime, making them more than fitting for any centerpiece design. For a more elegant look to a Spring wedding, consider placing a towering flower in a tall, glamorous vase. As mentioned in the color palette section, paring deep jewels tones like gold, amethyst and ruby, with soft Spring colors will add a sense of luxury to your wedding. Incorporating this chic style in your centerpiece is a visually appealing and seasonally fitting idea.

ays to Make Sure Your Officiant W Speech isn’t Boring

Article By Kayla-Ajanae Archer-Buckley Being asked to officiate a wedding, is an honor and truly a one-of-a-kind experience. This role requires patience, authenticity, and good communication. A successful wedding officiant is someone who masters the art of storytelling. This unique position allows you to tell the story of a couple’s love while marking the beginning of their new commitment to each other. If you were chosen for this role, know that the soon-to-be-married couple chose YOU for a reason. This may seem like a big responsibility, and it is, but with good preparation you can deliver an amazing and heartwarming speech that resonates with the couple and all their loved ones. The best officiant speeches come from the heart and are delivered with authenticity. Officiants create an extremely special moment between themselves, the couple, and the guests. They tell the story of love, commitment, dedication, and faithfulness. Traditional officiant speeches can be repetitive, and maybe even a little boring sometimes. You want to do your best to create a memorable moment and deliver a speech that stands out. If you’re struggling to write your officiant speech, don’t take the easy route by looking up templates or outlines. Instead, we recommend speaking from the heart and channeling your creativity. If you want to deliver an entertaining and engaging officiant speech, keep reading! Below we’ve come up with 8 ways to make sure your officiant speech isn’t boring.

1

Be Prepared Being prepared is the key to writing and delivering any type of speech. Start writing your speech as early as possible. You may end up rewriting it over time and creating several drafts. If you start early, you’ll have more time to receive feedback and make changes. Being prepared also includes understanding

22

|

the audience and the couple. You want to be able to deliver a speech that speaks to everyone attending the ceremony. We also suggest practicing your speech a few times. After all, practice makes perfect! You’ll be less nervous and less likely to make mistakes when you’ve practiced a few times.

April 2022

2 3 4 5 6

Communicate With the Couple Every couple is different and has different wants. Some people want to include songs, poems, humor, or even dancing in their ceremonies so communicate with your couple. This ceremony should be personal to them, so don’t be afraid to ask if they have any suggestions or ideas for you. Be sure to ask about the overall tone of the wedding so you can tailor your ceremony to it. You should also about the length of your speech. You don’t want to risk saying too little, or worse saying way too much.

Introduce Yourself Start by welcoming the guests and introducing yourself. This will allow you to make a great first impression on the guests. Your introduction should be unique and engaging. You may want to include a story on how you met the couple and discuss your relationship with them.

Personalized Wedding Vows Traditional wedding vows follow a structure and are usually led by the officiant. There’s nothing wrong with this, but nothing is more heartwarming than hearing meaningful wedding vows. The guests are likely to appreciate this over the traditional routine.

Be Funny

Skip the Templates

Stick with light humor unless the couple specified otherwise. You may want to include a few jokes and humorous stories about the couple, but nothing too embarrassing. Keep your jokes relevant and appropriate. Weddingwire.com suggests, including some self-deprecating jokes that highlight something the couple excels at that you don’t. Poking a little fun at yourself is a great way to lighten the mood and make everyone laugh.

Authenticity is the key to delivering and creating an engaging speech. We recommend telling the story of how the couple met. These stories are usually sweet or funny, so it’s the perfect addition to your speech. The story should be personal and be sure to include your relationship with the couple. You may want to talk about the history of their relationship and how it’s grown from your perspective.

Make The Ceremony Creative

When you’re delivering any type of speech you should be mindful of your body language. Your attitude and appearance will impact how your speech is received. No one wants to listen to someone who sounds monotone or looks like they’d rather be somewhere else. When speaking you should make good eye contact, smile, and speak with confidence.

If you want to create a memorable and entertaining experience, consider adding some creative elements to the ceremony. It can be tempting to follow the traditional order but don’t be afraid to add your touch. You can incorporate some love quotes, poems, a song if you’re feeling bold, or a toast!

SWEET TEA AND HONEYMOONS

Article By Courtney Williams 25

April 2022

So, you’ve finally planned your dream wedding. You know the décor, the food, and the layout like the back of your hand. You’re now ready to plan your honeymoon and you have a few choices to make. You could go on a trip across the world, or you could look for something a little more domestic. Sure, travelling to another country could be an interesting experience but it takes planning and could be costly. You want to choose a place that will allow you and your partner to make the most of your honeymoon but you’re still not sure where. Now what? Well, if you’re looking for a good place for you and your spouse to get away, the answer may be closer than you think. According to Wedding Day Sparklers, 40 percent of newlyweds will have their honeymoon within the U.S., while the other 60 percent will take theirs abroad. But if you’re not interested in extensive travelling, consider planning your dream honeymoon in the land of southern hospitality. The south is known for its charm, its rich history, and its beautiful coastlines. Luckily for newlyweds, there are plenty of destinations to choose from. For this list we are going to focus on five southern cities that are perfect for those looking to make lifetime memories after the alter.

1

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina Imagine walking on a calm sandy beach; a slight breeze blowing in the wind. As you look out to the ocean, the sound of waves gives you a sense of peace and comfort. Just you, your spouse and a whole island of beautiful views and numerous golf resorts. On Hilton Head Island, your imagination becomes your reality. A popular tourist destination on Hilton Head Island is the Sea Pines Resort. This beautiful waterfront getaway is the perfect stay for beach, golf, and nature lovers. It has three championship golf courses within the resort and has other recreational options such as tennis courts, hiking trails, and bike tours. What makes Sea Pines a great place for honeymoons is that there is always something to do to keep both partners relaxed and entertained.

Savannah, Georgia

2

It’s hard to not be taken aback by the beauty within Savannah, Georgia. From the greenery to the water, to the historic city squares, Savannah is no less than picture perfect. To have a honeymoon here is to embrace the city’s simple elegance. According to Brides.com, the best time for couples to plan a trip is in the spring or summertime when flowers and other foliage are in full bloom. Whether you choose to take a romantic riverboat cruise or want to enjoy the restaurants downtown, make sure you take plenty of photos.

3

Key West, Florida It would not be right to talk about the South without talking about Florida, especially Key West. This island oasis with its tropical foliage makes visitors feel a world away from home and is a paradise for newlyweds. Key West, Florida is one of the farthest Southern cities you can go to in the U.S. If you do find yourself on this Island, you will be closer to Cuba than you are to the nearest Walmart. Don’t worry, the bright blue ocean and tropical views will make up for it. Did you know that Key West was the land of inspiration for classic novelist, Ernest Hemingway? Hemingway was said to enjoy the island for its abundance of fishing and boating activities. During his residence in the Florida Keys, he wrote several short stories and some of his most well-known novels. The Hemingway home is still standing and is now a museum and venue. If you’re a couple who appreciates the home’s unique history on the island, you may even consider making it the spot of your destination wedding.

4

New Orleans, Louisiana The party never stops in New Orleans. New Orleans is the town of Mardi Gras, jazz, and some of the nation’s best seafood dishes. New Orleans is the spot for couples who want to have a little

adventure. While New Orleans does not have a beach, it does have historic Bourbon Street, the Garden District, and notable downtown scenery. Its unique architecture and colorful exterior designs will certainly add some spice to your memory photos. According to the Wedding Wire, if you are planning to have your honeymoon in New Orleans, the best time to go is in the springtime after Mardi Gras crowds have dispersed and you can get the most out of your visit.

Charleston, South Carolina

5

Charleston is the textbook picture of Southern charm. It has a rich culture and history that captivates millions of visitors every year. The great thing about Charleston is that there are numerous opportunities to feel like a part of the community. Ride along in a horse and carriage and get a history lesson on a tour of historic plantations. If you get the chance to visit this harbor city, be sure to take a tour of your area. For those who love shopping, downtown Charleston has an abundance of stores including the popular Charleston City Market. And if those were not enough reasons to visit the city, Charleston was voted the number one city in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards in 2016. For a truly southern honeymoon, Charleston may be worth the visit.

Why have your honeymoon in the South? Why not? It has picture perfect scenery, good food, and offers a cultural experience like no other. Your dream southern honeymoon is not just limited to these five options either. There are many cities that can take your romantic getaway to the next level. No matter what city you choose, you are sure to find something that will stand out to both you and your partner. Wherever, however, you choose to spend your honeymoon, be sure to make memories that the two of you will cherish always and forever.

Tips For Planning A Multicultural Wedding

Article By Nyah Marshall

To put simply, a multicultural wedding is any marriage between two people with different backgrounds, in which the wedding and reception includes ceremonial and cultural practices from both familial backgrounds. A marriage between two Americans can be considered multicultural if they come from different regions or ethnic groups. However, the cultural differences would be much more substantial if it was a marriage between two people from different countries or continents. The union of two people is also the union of their families, friends, backgrounds and traditions. This union becomes even more significant in the case of multicultural weddings— in this case, your significant other can come from a completely unique and different background. As the nation becomes increasingly diverse, multicultural weddings are on the rise. The act of blending two religious and cultural backgrounds into a wedding ceremony may sound difficult, but the outcome will ultimately make everyone happy and beautifully blend two families.

The question then becomes, how can soon-to-be wed couples successfully blend their weddings by incorporating the most important elements, make everyone happy and stay on budget? Here are 5 tips and 5 wedding ideas we complied that will help make sure your multicultural wedding is a great experience. 1.) Consider hiring an experienced planner. Planning a wedding is already stressful—planning a multicultural wedding and woking to blend both families could make this experience even more stressful. If there is money to splurge, hiring a wedding planner who has experience with planning multicultural weddings will make the process a little easier. A planner’s job is to guide you through difficult decisions and conversations, granting you and your significant other some peace of mind Mimi. Ebichi Events, a wedding planning company based in Washington, D.C., specializes in multicultural weddings. As experts in planning weddings of the sort, they explained, “your wedding should tell the story of your heart, your dreams, taste and style while flowing seamlessly from the planning phase to the day itself.” For this reason they reflect the goals of other wedding planners and work to spend quality time with you and your parent, ensuring that your wedding is successfully planned. 2.) Educate guests and check in with both families. There could be several expectations and ideals on how your wedding should look, coming from you and your partner’s families. It is most important that your wedding is a reflection of you and your partner’s values. However to avoid unnecessary stress, (as you can see, the goal is to avoid stress at all costs!!) it’s essential that you educate your guests on your partner’s culture and have those difficult conversations with your family. Marquette Avenue Events is a Chicago and Pacific Northwestbased event planning boutique, that’s renowned for their fusion weddings. CEO Brianne Garritano emphasizes that being proactive in setting expectations with your family is key to a successful multicultural wedding. “When parents are not stressed,” Garritano said in an interview with PartySlate, “our couples are not stressed.” A second component to this would be ensuring that you introduce your guests to the cultures represented during the wedding. For instance, you can translate wording for guests when appropriate, as well as, educate them on the rituals and ideas throughout the wedding.

not be an option. This brings us to our next tip, which is to consider having two separate ceremonies. 4.) Consider having two equally important ceremonies. Sometimes all of the tough decisions that come with planning a multicultural wedding can become overwhelming. It’s tough trying to accommodate everyone, especially when you and your partner’s families live in different countries. If you find the act of blending your wedding into one ceremonial event too stressful, it wouldn’t hurt to have two different ceremonies. This allows you to comfortably showcase each culture separately, with no exclusions so no one feels left out. Geographically and financially this could be the smarter decision. 5.) Let’s talk budgeting.

3.) Double check with religious and cultural institutions. Before setting everything in stone, it is important that you check with the religious institutions that you plan to have officiate the wedding. Every culture has its own frameworks and while most religious officiants are open to interfaith union, some are more stringent with their unions. To avoid any complications, be sure to be transparent with your officiant to ensure they are comfortable with preforming the ceremony at a multicultural wedding. Some officiants of differing backgrounds may even perform the ceremony together! On the other hand, depending on you and your spouse’s cultural values, having two officiants preform the union ceremony many

Speaking of financially smarter decisions, what you include or don’t include in your multicultural wedding greatly depends on your budget. Discussing your budget with your partner, family and planner early on will help you find some clarity in some of those tough decisions. Mapping out the full picture of what your event will look like, who’s attending and where the money is being allocated are important questions that should be answered early on in the planning process. This is especially important for multicultural weddings, because in some cultures and depending on the event type, there could be certain expectations of who traditionally pays for what.

tradition. Entertainment is just another way to connect people and commemorate each culture in a unique way. In one Latin-Indian fusion wedding planned by Marquette Avenue Events, the couple chose to feature both a mariachi band as well as a barrat with colorful smoke bombs and lively dancing. 3.) Translated invitations. Ensuring your wedding is an all around, culturally immersive experience starts with the perfect invitations. Wedding invitations with writing in both families’ native languages is a creative way to include both cultures. This will also guarantee that everyone is able to read the essential wedding details. In a wedding planned by Ruby and Pearl event, the couple chose to incorporate a Chinese tea ceremony within their wedding invitations. 4.) A diverse playlist. Just like food, music brings everyone together and helps effectively introduce cultures. When planning an interfaith wedding choose your music and DJ with a clear goal that you want every guest’s ethnicity respected and acknowledged. Adding an adequate variety of music from different genres and cultures to your playlist is a great way to get people on the dance floor and mingling! Also, a good way to get both families on the dance floor on the day of your wedding is by scheduling dance classes for family members before the big day! This can serve as a fun ice-breaker and as a way to teach everyone a few traditional and culturally significant dances.

Wedding Ideas for Incorporating Both Cultures

5.) Be unique with your fashion choice.

Now that the more stressful part of the planning process is out of the way, it’s time get to one of the many exciting parts about multicultural weddings— getting creative about how you plan to blend the two cultures through your wedding design! Hopefully these 5 ideas inspire how you’ll blend your two cultures throughout your ceremony and reception. 1.) Fusion food and drinks. One of the best and fun ways to introduce your guests to different cultures is through the art of food.Your wedding food and drinks could be a fusion of traditional meals from both cultures. When speaking on multicultural weddings, catering company Blend Catering based Tahoe, California, emphasizes the intimacy behind food. “Eating together, especially foods that represent a couple, is a really intimate experience and takes the experience a step further,” they said.

A distinct characteristic of multicultural weddings is certainly the different traditional attires the couples choose to incorporate within their ceremonies. There are many ways to include cultural attire throughout the ceremony, in ways that do not have to clash. Some couples have chosen to execute this idea by wearing the same culturally, traditional attire during the ceremony and then another at the reception. Others wear their own cultural attire during a single ceremony. Another way of symbolizing the fusion of two cultures is through a fashion swap, where the bride and groom swap traditional attire for the entire celebration. Ultimately you and your partner should use your knowledge, experiences and values to create a memorable wedding and experience. This beautiful event, that brings together two families of different backgrounds, should be nothing but enjoyable for both parties!

The food at your wedding should be equally as diverse as the ceremony. Another way to educate your guests is by creating a menu card with the food, where it comes from and its significance. 2) Double the entertainment. When selecting the entertainment for your wedding, think about booking talents that showcase each family’s heritage and

KRAB KING The Hottest New Restaurant In Upper Marlboro Article By Kayla-Ajanae Archer-Buckley If you’re in the DMV looking for great customer service, high-quality seafood, and an unforgettable experience, we recommend checking out Krab King in Upper Marlboro. Krab King is a Black-owned restaurant that is known for its unique spin on “traditional Maryland Crab Cakes”. D.C. Metropolitan native, Heath Wilkins founded Krab King in 2018 with a vision in mind that led to what the business has become today. Krab King didn’t start as a traditional brick-and -mortar dining spot. Wilkins started off working from home. He spent the weekends delivering food from his pop-up locations to attract more customers. From the start of this journey until now, one thing is for certain, and it’s that Wilkins and his team are dedicated to creating a consistent and tasty experience for all their customers. This eatery offers crab cakes in a variety of different flavors, and judging by their reviews, each option is equally delicious! They’re currently serving “Krab Mac N’ Cheese” layered with jumbo lump crab and a six-cheese blend, “Krab and Shrimp Quesadillas” with jumbo lump crab, shrimp, and shredded cheese tossed in jerk sauce. They also offer sandwiches that come with fries, such as the “Smoked Salmon Kake” sandwich, “Jumbo Lump Kake” sandwich with two flavor options; old bay and jerk, and of course their specialty “Cajun stuffed Krab Kake” with shrimp.

34

If you’d like to try Krab King for yourself visit 5720 Crain Hwy, Upper Marlboro, MD. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you’re not in Upper Marlboro, and still want to try Krab Kake rest assured because there’s a Krab King food truck coming to a neighborhood near you!

Reviews One 2020 review, written by Kenneth H states, “… Perfectly seasoned and cooked to a nice brown color. My wife ordered the shrimp quesadilla and was speechless. The only thing she could [do] was nod her head and lick her fingers. To show you I am not kidding, I went back both days. If you ever see the Krab King food truck in your neighborhood, make sure you stop by, you won’t be disappointed!” Fast forward to 2022, the most recent review shows that Krab King remains on top. Kiara M left a glimmering 5-star review stating, “Restaurant just opened; food was great. I had the salmon sandwich. Can’t wait to come back!!” According to KrabKing.com, reviews like this are what inspired Wilkins to keep growing his business. “The reviews from his customers were beyond ecstatic. This is when Heath realized he truly had something special. Heath, along with his strong team of like-minded individuals, continues to serve customers by developing new cuisines, providing highquality customer service, while ultimately pushing Krab King towards becoming a leading household name in the culinary industry.”
