LETTER From The EDITOR

NEW YEAR’S R From Bowie’s Favorite Local Business Owners Article By Alyson Turner With the start of the New Year, we are all glad to see 2020 behind us. We reached out to local business owners to hear about some of their New Year’s Resolutions for their business and their upcoming goals for 2021.

Anthony Stewart, President & CEO of Stewart Financial Services, believes that now more than ever, it is time to focus on financial health and reaching out to clients. “Even though our life has been interrupted that doesn’t mean your business is going to be interrupted. We need to take advantage of what is going on right now. People are not out and about like they used to be. We have the opportunity to reach people more using today’s technology virtually.” In 2021, Mr. Stewart plans to focus on keeping people engaged with a concise, consistent marketing plan. “It should be easier now that people don’t have to leave their homes to learn about us. Using this new technology, especially as it relates to life insurance, we can still connect [and build a relationship] virtually.”

“As far as getting more people involved in the business. You don’t have to drive around and I think that this is going to bring in more people to be able to work in this industry. More people have been interested in financial services, and working from home. It will bring in more people to be employed this year.” Finally, Mr. Stewart wants to keep focusing on people’s financial health. “Income Replacement, Getting Out of Debt, and Creating a Generation of Wealth. You can do all that from home. Many people who thought they might never do this type of business are now open to it because they can do it from home. Even though I cannot physically get out and see people like I used it. I can actually reach more people than ever before.”

The Benefits of CBD Products

Embrace CBD Wellness Center Owner Nicholas Patrick shares why it is time for everyone to embrace CBD. Article By Alyson Turner Photography By Ro Moreno

T

hese days there are many articles and websites touting the benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD) products. It has been celebrated as a treatment for everything from chronic pain to anxiety disorders. With so much information out there, how do you know what products are high quality and authentic? Nicholas & Megan Patrick, owners of Embrace CBD Wellness Center, decided to open the store to serve people with authentic, trustworthy products. Nicholas spoke with Simply Bowie and shared why it is important to use a trusted source for all your CBD products. “We are bringing confidence and validity to an otherwise tumultuous industry and there are a lot of fake and fraudulent products out there,” Nicholas tells us, “Our goal is to create a safe

environment for people to become educated on how the products can interact with the body, the brain, and medications. We keep third party lab results in the store, complete quality control, and focus on customer service. Our flagship store is in Glen Burnie with two additional stores in Pasadena and Ellicott City. We value quality, education, and our customers.” Embrace CBD is a family-owned business along with Nicholas’ wife, Megan and a tight knit staff with over 20 plus years of education and experience with Cannabinoid science. They are accredited by the Better Business Bureau and own 3 of the 4 CBD businesses in Maryland that have received this accreditation.

12 | January 2021

Nicholas says, “We value integrity and ensure that we are selling specific products for the individual’s need. What makes us stand apart is that we also go much deeper into the hemp plant than just CBD. There are a lot of other Cannabinoids that are extremely helpful to people including CBC, CBG, CBD, and CBDA and Delta 8 THC (a legal form of THC). We are able to incorporate those Cannabinoids and create a specific regimen for people.” Embrace CBD has crafted strong relationships with local farmers that they source all of their hemp from. They know where everything is coming from, “from seed to sale.” According to the Embrace CBD website, “Cannabidiol is one of dozens of cannabinoids found in the

hemp plant and unlike THC found in marijuana, CBD does not create a “high”. Cannabinoids are characterized by their ability to act on the cannabinoid receptors that are found throughout the body. All of our products are 100% Hemp-Derived and CO2 Extracted and contain less than 0.3% THC.” Nicholas, a cancer survivor, became enthralled with the science behind medical marijuana, and that interest has helped grow the business. “We really want to put people first here, this is not just something we say or use as a gimmick. We are very empathetic, people over profits and we donate money every week. One of our main goals is to make a difference and do everything we can to make sure people are taken care of.”

13 | January 2021

“CBD is a cannabinoid-a chemical derived from the cannabis plant. It is derived from hemp and it operates endocannabinoid receptors throughout the body to maintain balance and homeostasis. It has been shown to help with issues such as anxiety and depression, pain and inflammation, auto immune disorders, skin conditions and more. This product is not FDA Approved which is why the industry is in the climate that it is in. Anyone can put soup in a bottle and call it CBD. It is federally legal and legal at the state level in Maryland, but there is no regulation,” Nicholas says, “We set accurate expectations for people. You don’t

get more authentic than the products that we sell. We don’t make our buying decisions on profit margins. We want to be vetting these companies and we do the heavy lifting so the customer doesn’t have too.” Due to the amount of fake products out there it is extremely important for people to use a trusted source for these products. “Independent studies by CNN, NBC, and Time Magazine, have all shown that 2/3 of CBD products sold online are fraudulent and mislabeled many contained little to no CBD, but they did have synthetic chemicals and

14 | January 2021

heavy metals. You need to be able to see a verified third-party laboratory report. Some companies have fake lab reports. We will call the laboratory directly and verify the analysis on our own before it goes into our binder. We do not take the companies at their word,” Nicholas says. Embrace CBD partners with Georgetown Hemp. They are one of their distributors and a trusted partner in quality control. Georgetown Hemp visits the hemp farm and processing facilities before they put their seal of approval on it. In the store, they sell a variety of products and each customer is given a regimen that is tailored to their specific needs. “We sell CBD Oils, sublingual oral tinctures, topicals, edibles, tablets, capsules, vapes, smokable flower, skincare, bath bombs, tea and honey and beverages. [They also sell products for cats and dogs]. One of the most popular things that we sell, which is 30% of our sales, is Delta 8 THC. That is legal THC. Customers can come here and buy a slightly different version that produces a small high, but it is legal and helps those who are dealing with cancer, appetite issues, and nausea,” Nicholas says, “We like to do consultations in the store. We identify what their pain point is and we walk them through how CBD works in the body, what the

Glen Burnie 402 Crain Hwy S Glen Burnie, MD 21061 443-410-4568

endocannabinoid system is. We also cover the different delivery systems, smoking, oils, tablets etc. We are going to recommend a specific combination of products and everything is tailored to people’s specific needs and there is no time limit on this. When a customer leaves, they know what the product is, how much they should take, and have confidence in the validity of the product. You don’t want to be putting things in your body that you don’t have an understanding of. We have the ability to tell you if there are potential interactions with prescription medications. We want you to understand and feel confident.” “My wife and I came up with the vision for this company in 2018. To create a place where people could come in and buy products that are authentic. We got it in our minds that we were going to use our life savings to do this because we saw a need. We now have Maryland’s highest rated CBD store. We have hundreds of 5-star google reviews. We don’t pay for reviews or give away free products. The first store opened in January 2019, and we are celebrating two years this month. We are a family here.” You can learn more about Embrace CBD Wellness Center online at IEmbraceCBD.com. You can also visit one of their three stores in Glen Burnie, Pasadena, and Ellicott City.

Long Engineering, LLC

John, Owner of Long Engineering LLC, emphatically shares the important of a clean and safe home. When it comes to doing things around our homes there are times that important preventative home maintenance can be overlooked until something breaks. When it comes to your HVAC system, it is important that you get it serviced twice a year and to ensure you are using the proper products that best fit your family and your home’s needs. This is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. John tells us, “We have products now especially the UV lights that kill germs to create clean and safe homes. It all has to do with the air flow and how people treat the air. I would like people to understand that there are products that are available to them that will allow them to have clean, germ-free air and virus-free air. It can be achieved, but many people don’t know or haven’t heard about these products. Especially at this time, it would help people to have these products installed.”

or asthma which is why we need to meet our clients first to determine what system you need.” They also sell Honeywell HEPA Filters along with other types of HEPA filters. These filters can clean your air down to microns of dust particles. This takes care of your incoming air and the UV lights clean your outgoing air. “We have the best indoor air quality products. As a small business, we have great pricing and can usually beat the larger companies’ pricing. These UV lights inside the ducts have become especially popular this Spring because the air becomes sterilized and clean. The thermostat controls when the light comes on. You can set it to turn on at certain times or run all the time. To keep your air pure, the best thing to do is put the unit on Fan rather than auto. This will sterilize all of the air going through your house.”

“While many people have seen or used handheld UV lights, this technology is not something you can hold in your hand. These lights are so powerful that they are installed directly into the duct work of your HVAC system. We have several UV lights starting at around $650 dollars. The Top Tech system works best for those who have allergies. We will also install a HEPA filter to ensure that allergens are being filtered out. It is important that we come out to the house for a consultation in order to tailor our services to what your family needs and what the house can support,” John says, “There is also the Air Knight System that has dried hydrogen peroxide to add a second level of germicide and virucidal protection that goes into your duct work. This is not suitable for those with allergies

18 | January 2021

Long Engineering, LLC

Long Engineering, LLC serves the surrounding areas from Washington DC to Baltimore along the BW Parkway. “We also come out and check your air flow to be sure that every room has a certain amount of cubic feet per minute of air. We try to see how much change over air you have in each room. We see what size unit you need and then make

recommendations based on your home. When we discovered that the UV Lights also kill the coronavirus (they have been sold in past years to help with allergies and pollen), I knew that it was important to get the word out. We are trained experts in installing these lights and are ready to the provide the community with these services.

Coach Athena Thomas spoke to Simply Bowie about the importance of working with a life coach and how to get rid of the roots of anger in 2021.

Life Coach, and owner of The Life Calling Coach, Athena Thomas has always felt drawn to helping others. After a year of unprecedented challenges, she wants to give people hope for the future. “This year was so difficult for a lot of people, and in this New Year people don’t know what to expect. I want to be able to bring some light into things and help people move forward after trying to jump over the hurdles that we have had this year. I want to be able to making that a little smoother because that is what coaching is,” Athena tells us, “I get spiritual on it because God shined a light on the stuff that he wants you to get rid of. Things That are difficult to see and even more difficult to do. That is what I see my purpose for 2021 is to help people deal with the things that God has shown them in 2020.”

21 | January 2021

Athena believes that Journaling is very important and is so helpful to working through the obstacles in your life. “You have to do the work. Journaling is part of that work to better yourself. My first workbook on rejection is already available on Amazon. The second workbook on anger is available for pre-order and will be released on January 17. It is a series of coaching work books that are based on my life and the things that I have done,” Athena says, “The next book is on anger, specifically how to uproot those roots of anger. [We ask] What are you rooted in? In 2020 a lot of people ended up angry because of what was shown to them and what has happened to them. In 2021, we are going to uproot the roots of anger and put in positive seeds.” Working with a life coach is an important tool and resource for people to reach goals. Athena says, “The way that I see life coaching is that you get someone who can come along side you and help you reach goals that you may struggle with individually. We are passionate about our goals, but things come up, the goal goes in the corner and then you forget to go back to it. It is beneficial to get a life coach to have someone keep you accountable, help you develop and stick to your plan. Coaching is tied to psychology; I am a big advocate of therapy to overcome things in your past. When you get to the point of, ‘What is next? Coaching can help with the ‘What do

22 | January 2021

I do now?’” It will help move a person forward that has graduated out of therapy. You are now in this new space and you have gotten rid of the vices that you had been depending on. A life coach can help you get into the next phase and show you how to put new things into place so you don’t fall backward.” Athena is, “The Life Calling Coach” and her path was made clear to her as she studied psychology in preparation to become a therapist. “When I started to go forward and make it happen to become a therapist, I realized that there can be a lot of darkness and taking on people’s pain. I started to really look at myself and my life when I discovered that [becoming a therapist] was not exactly the path for me. Then, life coaching was placed in my path. It is very similar to therapy in some ways, but it is not dwelling in the past rather you are using the pain to move forward. I took the course and earned my certificate because it was so natural to me,” Athena says, “I decided to go back to school because I saw the correlation between therapy and life coaching. I did some peer coaching with another coach and she was asking me some questions that pushed me to a point where I ended up crying on the phone. I couldn’t finish the session and I realized that really was a root for me that I needed to work on in therapy. That is where I really saw the connection with therapy.”

23 | January 2021

From Coach Athena Are You Living On Purpose? There are many ways to go about the task [of identifying your life’s purpose], but the biggest step is realizing that a change is necessary, then taking steps to learn more about who you are and what things interest you. This journey can be challenging especially if you have not spent much time with yourself. The American dream consists of finding a good job, paying your bills, buying a home and raising your family. Most never thought that there should be more in life. But there are some who don’t follow this path. They devote their lives to service such as becoming a nun, a priest, a minister, volunteering or creating organizations that help serve a community. These people are usually not the norm but the exception. Surely their lives have meaning right? One can achieve fulfillment in work without devoting their entire life to the types of service listed above. There are many people who are re-evaluating their career choices and choosing careers that bring them fulfillment rather than just a paycheck. Finding one’s purpose in life is rapidly becoming more important. To learn more about discovering your purpose, there are many resources and entry points available. Choosing one that fits you depends upon who you are. There are Christian based programs that help people discover God’s plan for their lives, one of which is the bestseller The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. Another spiritually based approach is A New Earth Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. Working with a Life Coach is an excellent way to discover your purpose in life as well. Whatever avenue you choose, it is a spiritual journey that begins with God. Knowing that you are connected to God who has placed you here for a specific reason fuels the journey towards purpose and brings forth peace, prosperity and clarity.

Coach Athena also stresses that it is important to pursue therapy first before working with a life coach. “If you have a person who really needs therapy first, a little push can make you shut down as it did with me. That can do more damage. That made me decide that I needed to do more to have a well-rounded practice,” Athena says, “I focused on psychology so that I would be able to recognize someone who may need therapy or someone who may need coaching. I have had to refer people to therapy because I don’t want to damage someone emotionally. I am concerned about the whole person to be well.” After a very challenging year, Athena encourages everyone to take a look in the mirror. “It is so easy to look at someone else and say, ‘It’s YOU’. It is harder to look in the mirror and sit with yourself and ask yourself those questions. I am a very spiritual person and if you have a spiritual base that is what you need to pull on at that moment,” Athena tells us, “You have to change your lens because it is very easy to focus on what we lost and it is easy to focus on what went wrong. You have to purposefully decide to see what you still have and look at what is around you. Focus on what is still here. That is really a mindset change.” “This is a growth -mindset and you are purposefully moving from a fixed perspective to a growth perspective. It is a process and it doesn’t happen overnight and I can help with that. Anyone who works with me should be prepared to do a lot of journaling. People don’t understand that a coach doesn’t do these things for you. I am just walking along side of you and you are doing the work. Sometimes that work is not easy.” Visit TheLifeCallingCoach.com to schedule your consultation or connect with Coach Athena. Her first workbook, What Are You Rooted In?: Planting Seeds of Purpose for Rejection Workbook & Journal is available now on Amazon. The second workbook in the series, What Are You Rooted In?: Planting Seeds of Purpose for Anger Workbook & Journal is available for pre-order and will be released on January 17.

Sell Your Home For Full Market Value By Monday The traditional home selling process is broken. It is antiquated, overrated, expensive, and ineffective because it is designed to sell homes over a long period of time. Unfortunately, when homes sit on the market using this system, they end up selling for significantly less than they should (if they ever sell at all) because time is acid to the sales price of your home. On the other hand, the SellByMondaySM System is specifically designed to net you more money for your home in less time. It does this by leveraging state-of-the-art research in behavioral psychology to positively influence the way buyers make decisions about your home. When this happens, you win. YOUNG

ENTREPRENEURS ARE MAKING WAVES IN

2021

Prince George’s County’s Young People Have Bright Ideas & Big Plans For The Future

Journalism & Graphic Design Student (and our favorite Simply Bowie intern) Alexis Murray has big plans for herself once she graduates. Alexis says, “I am graduating in May 2021 with a Bachelors of Art in Media, Journalism, and Film with a concentration of Journalism and a minor in Graphic Design. My plans after graduation are to get a job at a media company while starting and launching my own fashion business and fashion magazines.” Alexis’ passion and drive are evident in everything that she does. She is a skilled writer with an eye for fashion and beauty. She doesn’t plan to let any fears of the future stand in the way of starting her own business empire. “I plan to achieve my goals by developing a business strategy that allows me to accomplish major tasks and develop strict discipline to alleviate any lack of motivation and fear,” Alexis tells us, “I think young college grads need tenacity and discipline with confidence to start their own business. From my own experience, someone starting a business will not always feel motivated to complete tasks and will most likely always feel fear but with discipline and taking the risks anyway, they will push through.”

Alexis Murray

Senior at Howard University

Even with all of the challenges and obstacles that have presented themselves in the past year, Alexis is ready to focus on graduation and the workforce with gusto. “My New Year’s Resolution when it comes to my career is to develop and implement a new routine [as it relates] to my business endeavors. I am in the transitional phase from student to working professional, so I need new strategies to adjust to my new world, not only with school no longer being an extra task but also [with the challenges of] COVID-19.”

DJ & Desiree Pena 5th & 3rd Grade

Siblings Diego and Dezirae Pena are young authors who have their own company, write stories for children, and have published their first book recently. They worked together on My Sister’s Hand to show the importance of valuing your family members and showing you care. These young entrepreneurs desire to write several more books, attend college, and give back to the community. According to their bio, both young authors aspire to write more books and to help others. “DJP Family Productions is owned and operated by Diego and Dezirae Pena. Diego and Dezirae are brother and sister who live in Maryland. Aspiring to make their dreams come true, they set a goal to write books about their life and share it with the world. They have put serious effort to not only be great storytellers and young business owners. Diego is a 5th grader ready to place his mark on the world. He is working on his first solo book. He aspires to attend New York University College to be a music and film producer when he grows up. Dezirae is a 3rd grader eager to explore the world. She was recently crowned Little Miss Virginia in USA East Coast Pageant. She is working on her solo book. She aspires to attend

Howard University School of Dentistry when she grows up.” Their mother, Stephanie Harris, tells us that they began writing their stories as a family. In addition to fostering a love of reading, Stephanie has instilled good business sense and a desire to serve the community within her children, “I told them they should definitely think of a business that they would have to do all the work up front and earn residual income. It is hard to open a lemonade stand and set it up every week, when in fact you can work smarter and do something, for example, sell homemade packets of lemonade mix where you do the work up front.” Diego and Dezirae primarily work on the stories and ideas together. Stephanie then goes through the first several rounds of edits before sending to an editor. Since their first book, A Sister’s Hand, was published in 2019 they have been working on several stories to be published in the future. They want to expand their business, not only writing their own books, but selling other books and becoming widely published. So far all of their profits have been donated to charity and they have donated over 100 books.

You can purchase your copy of A Sister’s Hand, a book about an older sister that no longer feels valuable to her younger sister at DJPFamilyproductions.com. You may also visit them on Facebook.

How Working

From Home Could Help

Save the Planet

Reports Show That The Pros of Working From Home Include Helping the Environment Last year, the term “working remotely” took on a life of its home. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that swept the globe, people had to figure out a way to work from home whether they wanted to or not. In many states across America and countries across the globe, lockdowns were implemented to help slow the spread of COVID-19. These widespread lockdowns caused a variety of issues for

businesses that needed to come up with efficient solutions quickly. With no other choice, employees began to adapt to their new normal, working from your house. For years, many employers have feared that working from home would cause a decrease in productivity. Those fears have been largely unrealized as people have been able to get work done

remotely without the stress of a commute. The typical 40-hour work week model has also been up for discussion as employees have been getting their work done faster than before. Kate Lister, President of Global Workplace Analytics, has stated on their website that remote work is a key solution to many sustainability issues. “One of the reasons climate

change experts have a hard time getting people to change their habits is that the impact is hard to see. But even in the early days of the global response to Covid-19, we are starting to see a dramatic reduction in traffic, congestion, and pollution. While sadly, sustainability has not been a primary driver of remote work in recent years, being able to actually see the difference it can make may finally flip the switch

for employers and employees,” Kate Lister says, “The annual environmental impact of half-time remote work (for those who both want to work remotely and have a compatible job) would be the greenhouse gas equivalent of taking the entire NY State workforce off the road. The fact is, there is no easier, quicker, and cheaper way to reduce your carbon footprint than by reducing commuter travel.”

who works remotely half of the time. Employees can save between $2,500 and $4,000 a year (working remotely half the time) and even more if they are able to move to a less expensive area and work remotely full time. We also estimate work-from-home initiatives will save U.S. employers over $30 Billion dollars a day during the Covid-19 crisis. This may be the tipping point for remote work.”

In addition to further reduced emissions, remote work also reduces the need for business travel and saves employers money in the long run. According to Kate Lister on GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics. com, “Covid-19 will also likely cause executives to rethink the need for travel to meetings, conferences, etc. They will learn that while virtual meetings may not have all the same benefits of being faceto-face, the savings may outweigh the costs much of the time. A typical employer can save about $11,000/year for every person

There are cons to remote work as well. A report by Mark Phillips on MSN.com focused on research that “growing dependency on IT has a significant impact on the environment” with concerns about the carbon footprint of storage clouds and excessive emails.

While remote work isn’t the cure all for pollution and carbon emissions, it is a huge step in the right direction. Those who have the ability to work from home should be allowed to continue once the threat of the pandemic has subsided.

Billionaire Philanthropist Donates $25 Million to Bowie State University and other Maryland Historically Black Colleges & Universities According to the Associated Press, “Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott is donating tens of millions of dollars to historically black universities in Maryland. The Baltimore Sun reported that the schools are Morgan State, Bowie State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Scott is the former wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Her donations in Maryland are part of more than $4.15 billion in financial gifts to 384 organizations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
