An Intern’s Spring Break By Courtney Williams

When I thought about all of the cool things I would do during spring break of my senior year of college, spending it in Milwaukee, Wisconsin did not come to mind. Alternative Spring Break, (ASB for short) takes students all across the country and the world to volunteer for the entire week. It sounds like a good deal for a freshman or sophomore spring break, maybe even a junior spring break but senior year? Senior year? The time when everyone goes big on their last spring break as a college student? This was supposed to be the big vacation and instead I decided to volunteer in Milwaukee? Absolutely. My decision to do ASB was actually made four years ago during my freshman year. I decided to go back home for the week, thinking it would be more restful and that maybe I would finally have time to see my long-distance boyfriend. Worst decision ever. I was so bored, none of my friends were on spring break, and on top of that me and my boyfriend broke up. Long story short, my freshman spring break was a disaster. That’s when I decided that ASB was my best shot at having a little fun during the break and I was determined to go next year. My sophomore year, I signed up, packed my bags and got ready to go to Memphis, Tennessee. That was until it canceled like everything else in 2020 due to the pandemic. I signed up for virtual ASB my junior year, which was okay, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was missing out on what could have been a very fulfilling experience. So here I am senior year with two choices to make. Do I take the traditional last hoo-rah and plan a big vacation to the beach? Or do I take my last chance of doing in-person ASB? I chose ASB after going back and forth about it but when I was assigned to go to Milwaukee, I immediately regretted my decision. First, I had to ask Siri where Milwaukee was. Then I thought, ‘Wisconsin? What’s in Wisconsin?’ I had an honest conversation with my mom that night, telling her I was a bit jealous of the people going to places like Puerto Rico, or Las Vegas while I was going to Milwaukee. Like moms do, she encouraged me to give it a chance. I decided to stick with Milwaukee, but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about what would happen if I just got off the bus on departure day. I stayed on the bus, and as

6

|

we pulled away from Howard, I knew there was no going back. Fourteen hours later, we were in Milwaukee, standing in the cold outside of a community center that would be our housing for the week. The center was the equivalent of a freshman dorm, and I was ready to go home on day one. That morning when we got our assignments for the day, I was told I would be going to a school. I have always felt a bit awkward around kids and the idea of being in a school all day was not exactly appealing to me. At the end of the day, our initiative was education so there was no way for me to avoid interacting with children. It was one of those situations where I told myself to just deal with it and make the most of the trip. I thought I would go into the school, help out the kiddos, and leave hoping the experience was not as awkward as I feared it would be. I was wrong about every aspect of this trip. Those little ones taught me so much more than I could have imagined. The thing about children is they open their heart’s so quicklyhoping that you will do the same. And that’s what I did. It was impossible not to. Those kids put their trust in me to be that listening ear, that shoulder to cry on, and that person to share their sadness with. They trusted me to be the person to give them that loving hug that they may or may not have gotten at home. One thing volunteering at that particular school made me realize is that there are ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ in this country and the divide is astounding. You could tell whose parents could provide all the attention, all the resources, and all the guidance that their children needed. Then there were those who, of no fault of their own, could not. I don’t know how

July 2022

much of that those kids understood but they were still some of the most brilliant children I had ever met. Children are so much more resilient than we are. Maybe it’s because they’re too innocent to understand all of the challenges that they have to deal with. It’s hard to say why some of those kids were so happy despite their circumstances but regardless it was nothing short of inspiring. Being a senior in college and all, I had my foot on the gas since the start of the semester. “Just finish strong,” I told myself. That was all I was thinking of, not leaving room for friends or time to enjoy the little things. After this trip, that definitely changed. For starters, I was with preschoolers. Those babies could go from screaming at the top of their lungs to being caught in a giggle fit in the blink of an eye. I would tie one person’s shoe and next thing I knew there was a line waiting for me to crouch down and fix their laces. If I gave one an ounce of attention, everyone needed attention. Anything less would result in a tantrum and believe me; I had no knowledge in how to handle an inconsolable 4-year-old. No doubt I learned to have a little more patience that week and then some. But there’s another lesson those kids taught me, something that surprised even myself. Somehow, in a room full of preschoolers who were constantly sprinting, I learned the value of slowing down. I had spent so much time trying to finish strong and work hard that I wasn’t appreciating those little bits about my day that made me happy. I wasn’t appreciating those little parts of the day where I made my parents laugh or got a chance to chat with a friend in passing. At the end of day, those moments were more valuable to me than any good grade on an essay. Those moments mattered. That’s what makes life worth

7

|

living. It was not something I thought children whose lives had only just begun would be able to teach me. How did I get this from spending a week with rambunctious preschoolers? I still don’t know but somehow, I decided that I really needed to start letting myself be present in my own life. Hearing the stories of the kids made me feel so grateful for everything I had. I had a new appreciation for my friends, my family, even my professors. Those kids showed me that no matter what happens, there’s always something to smile about around the corner. That’s what they did- no matter who broke whose crayon or what was happening at home, these kids always found a way to come back and be happy again. I remember that last day with the kids, after being Ms. Williams for the week. Some of the kids even said I was their new best friend. All I could say was, “Yes, we can be best friends.” Realistically, I know I will never see those kids again but even now, I still remember how brilliant they were without even realizing it themselves. I loved the experience of volunteering that week. It wasn’t the typical senior spring break that I imagined but from that trip, I took away more than I thought I would. On the bus I watched the farmland go by, inching closer back to home. I was definitely sad; I was going to miss those little ones who claimed me as their new best friend and gave me random hugs. Yes, children are a bit much. I still think they’re too much for me to handle but I have a newfound respect for them. Afterall, they get right what we get wrong and since then, on days when I start going through the motions, I remember to let that inner child see the good in everything.

15 Adventure Activities to Try This Summer Adventure is the key to creating a memorable summer. After spending these last few summers in the house due to the pandemic, many of us are understandably eager to get back outside and spend time with our family and friends. There are plenty of thrilling and engaging activities that require no skill and are sure to create an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re looking to make a splash in the water or soar through the air, there are many options to choose from that are suitable for all ages. To help you we’ve come up with 15 adventurous activities that will fill you and your loved ones with excitement this summer. Many of these activities can also be done locally, so we’ve included some location suggestions to make planning these adventures a little easier.

Go-Karts Satisfy your need for speed with Go Karting. This is a fun and exciting activity that can be enjoyed by children and adults. It’s fairly easy once you get the hang of it, and it’s pretty similar to driving. You can make this activity more thrilling by turning it into a competition with your friends or family. Fun Land of Fairfax in Centreville, VA, and Adventure Park USA in New Market, MD both have great Go Karting tracks.

White Water Rafting Also known as “River Running” this is great for water lovers that are looking for an adrenaline rush. White water rafting is more suitable for adults or older teenagers because it can be scary and sometimes dangerous. If you’ve never been white water rafting, prepare to experience high speeds as the rapids propel you through the water. You can experience a white water rafting adventure at Harpers Ferry in West VA.

Bungee Jumping If diving through the air at high speed is your idea of excitement, you should try bungee jumping. You can

8

|

experience this blood-pumping activity at Kings Dominion in VA. Their Xtreme SkyFlyer is 153 FT tall and will allow you to experience a free fall at 60 MPH.

Paintball Paintballing is a great and competitive team-style activity for friends and family. If you’d like to try this activity, you can visit the Paintball Park at Quantico, Pev’s Paintball, or Central Avenue Paintball.

Inner Tubing Inner Tubing is another great water activity, but it can also be done in the snow or through the air. This involves riding on a large, inflated tube that is used to help you float. You can go tubing at the Shenandoah River or Harpers Ferry. Both locations offer tube rentals.

Zip Lining Zip Lining is another thrilling activity. Ziplining requires you to wear a harness that is then attached to a pully and an inclined cable. This allows you to zip through the sky at high speeds, and they’re usually located in scenic areas which make for a great view as you soar through the air. This activity is typically suitable for ages 5 and up, but each location has its own rules. A great spot for ziplining in the DMV is Go Ape Zipline & Adventure Park in Rockville, MD.

Laser Tag Laser tag is a shooting activity similar to paintball, but it doesn’t involve being physically hit with anything. It uses a light beam with a sensor that indicates when a player has been “hit”. This is another activity that is great for a team or large group of people. If you’d like to try this activity, check out Dave & Busters in Maryland or Ultrazone Bailey’s Crossroads in Falls Church, VA.

Roller Coasters Roller coasters are great for those who love amusement parks and don’t mind heights. There are so many to choose from, and most amusement parks have rides that are great for a variety of ages. Some amusement parks you may want to visit in the DMV this summer are Kings Dominion, Six Flags, or Adventure Park USA.

Rock Climbing Rock climbing can be done indoors or outdoors for those who are feeling a little more adventurous. You can go rock climbing at Movement Crystal City in Arlington, VA, or Sportrock Climbing Center in Alexandria, VA.

Kayaking Kayaking is a great alternative for those who love the water but prefer to spend their time relaxing. Kayaking is also great for children and adults; it is also much safer. For children younger than 7, canoeing may be a better option since most places offer kid canoes. There are plenty of places to go kayaking or canoeing in the DMV such as Georgetown, Rock Creek Park, and the Wharf. These three locations are in Washington, DC and they offer Kayak rentals.

Sky Diving Another great activity for those looking for an adrenaline rush. This can also be done indoors or outdoors. For an indoor experience, you can go to iFLY Indoor Skydiving in Gaithersburg, MD. If you’d prefer to be outdoors visit DC Skydiving Venter in Midland, VA

Bumper Cars Bumper Cars are a great activity for children and adults. This activity consists of small cars that are connected to the ceiling or floor. The goal of this activity is to drive around the

9

track, but as expected it can get pretty competitive as people are bumping into one another.

Hiking Hiking is relaxing and suitable for all ages. You can walk for as little or as long as you’d like. You can even pack some food and plan a rewarding picnic at the end of your hike. There are so many locations for hiking in the DMV but here are some of our recommendations, Greenbelt Park, Rock Creek Park, Glover-Archbold Trail, and Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Go Camping Camping is another fun outdoor activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. We recommend packing a few tents, some sleeping bags, snacks, a cooler, beverages, and any other essential items you use frequently. Many of the hiking locations such as Rock Creek Park and Greenbelt Park feature camping grounds that are perfect for a family trip.

Drive-Thru Safari A drive-through safari is perfect for animal lovers! Many drive-thru safaris feature animals such as rhinos, elephants, tigers, monkeys, giraffes, and more! Drive-thru safaris can make a great trip for family and friends. Virginia Safari Park has 1 180-acre drive-thru zoo in Natural Bridge, VA.

10 Tips for quick, healthy meals during the week. Article By Kayla-Ajanae Archer-Buckley

You’re busy, we get it! Sometimes you just don’t have the time or energy to cook a well-balanced meal. It’s definitely easier to just grab the nearest snack or place an order on Uber Eats or Door Dash. But after a while, these habits can take a toll on your health (and your wallet). But don’t worry there are plenty of tips and tricks that will save you time in the kitchen while keeping you full, happy, and healthy. From quick food ideas to meal prepping, we’ve got you covered! We’ve included 10 tips for quick healthy meals and some meal ideas for people on the go.

foods high in carbohydrates. There are several quick snacks and meals that are high in protein such as eggs, nuts, peanut butter, beans, and lean meats. Protein powder is also another quick and effective way to add more protein to your diet. You can mix most protein powders with water or milk or if you have more time, you can add the powder to pancake mix for a filling breakfast. Canned items such as tuna, mackerel, and sardines are also full of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients. You can enjoy these foods on their own, in between some bread, or on crackers.

Revamp Leftovers

Making use of leftover food such as chicken, fish, and veggies is a great way to save time and avoid wasting food. Leftover chicken can be turned into a sandwich, chicken salad, or chicken strips. Fish and vegetables can be added to salads, soups, or served with a side like grains or starches.

Make a Grocery List

Creating a grocery list ahead of time saves time and will prevent you from buying unnecessary items. A good tip to keep in mind while grocery shopping is to avoid shopping while hungry. Going grocery shopping while hungry may result in overspending and a surplus of items you don’t want or need.

Homemade Sauces and Condiments

Store-bought sauces and condiments are often high in sodium and full of preservatives and other foreign ingredients. Making sauce from scratch allows you to choose exactly what goes in each batch and depending on how much you make it can last a while. You can store your homemade sauces or condiments in the freezer and use them in a variety of dishes as needed.

Prepping Vegetables

When you buy vegetables like onions, peppers, or carrots prep them for future meals by pre-chopping and pre-cleaning. Extra vegetables can be left in the freezer or fridge. You can use your pre-cut veggies for meals such as soups and stews, or as a side dish. You can also buy pre-cut or frozen bagged veggies to save even more time.

More Protein

According to Healthline.com, protein is often considered to be one of the most filling macronutrients. Some studies show that protein is even more satiating than

12

Another great way to prep vegetables is by cutting them and roasting them. Roasted vegetables can be stored in the fridge, and they make a great addition

|

July 2022

to rice bowls, salads, and soups. You can also use the leftover roasted vegetables to make homemade vegetable stock by simmering vegetables in wine or water with additional seasoning and herbs for 30 minutes to 2 hours. The great thing about homemade stock is that it contains less sodium than store-bought stock, so it makes a good alternative.

Extra Grains

When making grains like rice or quinoa, always cook extra and store it in the fridge or freezer. Leftover grains make a great addition to proteins such as chicken or salmon. You can also transform leftover rice into a homemade stir-fry or fried rice with a protein of your choice and vegetables.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Skipping breakfast can be tempting if you’re in a hurry, but this actually does more harm than good. Although it may sound cliché, it’s true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Stock up on items such as fruits, instant oatmeal, or granola bars for a quick breakfast. If you prefer homemade breakfast, try prepping breakfast the night before to save time. Self. com recommends egg and veggie muffins since they’re quick, easy, and nutritious. To make these muffins all you need is eggs, cooking oil, vegetables of your choice, and seasoning.

Using your Days Off

It can be hard to find time for grocery shopping, prepping, and cooking during the week when you have a busy schedule. Use your days off to grocery shop and

13

|

plan meals out for the week. You can also use your days off to cook large batches of food that can be stored in the freezer such as pasta, chili, or stew.

Stock Your Freezer

Keep your freezer well-stocked and organized with essential ingredients so that you’ll always have healthy ingredients on hand. A well-stocked freezer will save time by lessening the time you spend in the grocery store. We recommend storing essentials and other items you may cook frequently such as spinach, peas, broccoli, sauces, ground beef, chicken, and fish. It’s also a good idea to stock up on bread and keep some slices in the freezer for later. Bread is great to keep on hand because it can be used for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can make toast, French toast, sandwiches, or pair your bread with a meal like pasta or soup.

Stock Your Pantry

In addition to stocking your freezer, you also want to make sure your pantry is fully stocked. You may want to stock up on items such as beans, canned vegetables, and grains like rice, quinoa, couscous, and wholewheat pasta. (Lentil pasta is also a delicious and healthy alternative that’s full of protein.) We also recommend stocking up on herbs and spices, so you have plenty of flavor options when you’re cooking. To save time, you can de-stem, wash, and dry herbs as soon as you buy them. Some staple herbs you may want to include in your pantry are cilantro, basil, rosemary, thyme, parsley, and mint.

Patio Pond In Your Backyard Article By Courtney Williams

Traditional backyard ponds are a great way to create a natural-looking water feature. These mini ponds can quickly become the centerpiece of any outdoor space as people love them for their simple beauty. Creating an in-ground pond can be a daunting task and much planning has to go into the installation process. A smaller alternative is to build a patio pond. A patio pond is a pond system set up within a large container that is often placed on a deck or patio. Patio pond kits are sold by home improvement stores; however, if you are starting your patio pond from scratch, it only takes a few steps.

Step 1:

Step 3:

The first step to building a patio pond is that you want to have a solid container for the pond itself. These containers can range from ceramic bowls to steel tubs to plastic flower barrels. While you won’t need anything expensive, make sure you have something that can sustain the weight of the water, gravel, plants, and other accessories you want to add to your pond. You want to find something that will not be damaged by water and will hold its shape over time. Regardless of what container you choose from, rinse out the container to wash away any dirt or chemicals before adding any aquatic organisms.

Now that you have your substrate at the bottom of your pond, place aquatic plants in your pond as you want them to appear when the pond is complete. If you are using a large container or want to add more height to your plants, consider adding bricks to create a platform for the plant to sit. While you can use one type of aquatic plant, adding different species of plants will diversify the colors and textures of your pond to give it a brighter appearance. As always, double check which plants do best in particular environments for maximum growth. If your plants come in a solid container, add holes to improve water flow.

Step 2: Once you have found your desired container, add either sand, soil, or gravel to your pond. Not only will this help support the ecosystem of your mini pond, but it can also hide the bottom of the container to give the pond a more natural appearance. This is especially important if you are going to be adding fish to your pond. At this time, have a desired spot for the pond in mind. Ideally, you want your pond to have enough sunlight to sustain the plants, but your pond does not have to be in direct sunlight.

16

|

Step 4: By now, your container is starting to look like a pond. At this time, you can add your water and filter. Filters are especially important if you are planning to add a few fish to your pond. There are a lot of filter options out there; however, deciding which one is best for your pond will be dependent on the size of the pond as well as what is in the pond. If you are using a smaller container and are not planning on adding any fish, you may opt for a small, gentle filter. If you

July 2022

are using a large container and adding fish to your pond, it may be best to find a filter that can handle the extra water.

(Optional Step): If you want to hide your filter to maintain the pond’s natural appearance, you can disguise it using rocks, gravel and a fake plant. Once you have organized the elements to hide the filter, you can hold the shape using expanding foam. If you use expanding foam, wait at least 12 hours for the foam to set. Another way to hide the filter is to use a bowl or spout that will allow water to flow into the pond. Not only will this hide the filter but will allow your space to have the peaceful sound of flowing water.

Step 5: Now that you have your water and your filter set up, the water will gradually clear from any dirt or debris. To help foster a healthy environment for your pond, add water-purifying solutions to clear any left-over chlorine. You can also add enzymes to promote the growth of healthy bacteria for your pond.

*Including Fish: If you are adding fish, be extra careful and allow your water to fully clear. Most patio ponds are not big enough for koi fish, so elect for smaller fish or turtles. Be sure there is balance to your pond when adding small animals. Now that you have your plants

17

|

and plant holders, consider the swim-space for each of your critters to avoid overcrowding. Fish are coldblooded, so you will need to acclimate them before releasing them into the pond. To do this, place the fish in a plastic bag and place the bag into the water. Wait at least 15 minutes or until the water temperature in the plastic bag is equal to the temperature of the pond. Once the temperatures are safe, you can release your fish.

Step 6: Congratulations, you have completed your patio pond! Your backyard or patio will now have a brilliant water feature. Different plants and animals have different needs so always be mindful of what is living beneath the surface. While patio ponds are relatively self-sufficient in terms of eliminating bad bacteria, it helps to check the pH balance of the water every now and then. If algae begin to crowd the surface of your pond it could indicate an issue with the filter and should be cleared to avoid over-growth. While there are water cleaners that help eliminate algae and build-up from fish, you may have to do a more detailed clean. Other than expected maintenance, your pond will be a great addition to your outdoor space. With their size, these ponds offer versatility, so whether you have a patio, a deck, or a balcony you can make something that best fits your home. Again, patio pond kits can be sold; however, starting from scratch is still an easy and fun project

Artist Corner

ARTIST’S STATEMENT In my artwork, you will see a different perspective of how negative and positive spaces interact. As a child, I was fascinated with the look of negatives on film strips. From early childhood, I believe I developed the eye of a photographer without a camera. As you follow the geometrical shapes and patterns of my artwork, you will find a common theme. Allow your eye to travel, look at the sharp edges drawn by a precision knife which speaks to the development of my style. My work has been described as irregular, eccentric, different, unusual and unconventional. I will continue to look at everyday images in this unorthodox way. Art has allowed me to speak feelings that can’t always be said through words. I hope I can inspire young people to know that art has a voice.

Quick Tips for

Speed-Dating

Check Out Some of the Ways to Have Fun While Looking For Love Article By Courtney Williams

22

|

July 2022

If we’re being honest, in today’s world, hoping and waiting to come across the right person does not always work. It’s no surprise that millions of people are turning to dating apps such as Tinder or Bumble or Match.com. They’re easy, they’re convenient and they allow people to take back control of their interactions. Another way people are putting themselves out there is by speed-dating. Speed-dating is a process typically hosted by singles groups where participants only have a few minutes to get to know each other and select the individuals they would like to meet again. It’s a quick process, hence the name, ‘speed’ dating, but it can keep things interesting and help get a good conversation going. Speed dating can be fun and exciting but like anything else, newcomers can be intimidated. A good starting place for those looking to get their feet wet in the dating pool is to find a good singles group. Singles groups can be used solely for the purpose of speed-dating; however, some host other social events in and outside of their community. Even if you don’t meet ‘the one’ in these groups, you will be introduced to other singles and may find yourself creating more friendships. Overall, finding a good singles group can not only help you connect with others but can help those who simply want to have fun. So once you’ve found a good singles group, another tip for speed dating is to look nice, and dress for the occasion. Again, each participant only gets a few minutes to present their best, most authentic self, and it’s hard to undo a first impression. It’s worth it to spend those few extra minutes ironing your shirt or applying an appropriate level of make-up. Another tip for making sure you have a smooth event is to have good conversations. Of course, this is easier said than done when you are face-to-face with

23

|

someone, and you can’t seem to collect your words. If you are concerned about holding conversations, it may help to prepare a few talking points. You want to give insight on who you are and what you’re about but remember to try and keep it positive. This is not the time to rant about how you were wronged by an ex-partner. You should highlight some of your achievements but try not to be too boastful. Keep the conversation light, after all if there is potential between you and the other participant some of those more intimate details can be shared later. Obviously, if you are trying to appeal as someone others should want to get to know, be polite. From the time we are five years old, we are constantly told to be polite, and the same thing applies to speed-dating. It takes a lot for some people to open up and put themselves out there, so be mindful. If your speed-date does say something a little more personal, don’t make suggestions, listen. You don’t want to make the other person feel beneath you by interjecting your opinions. Also, try not to judge too hard based on looks. We are not attracted to everyone and that’s okay but keep those thoughts to yourself. The judging part comes after the event is over and you decide whether you would like to see that person again. Truly, no matter what phase of life you’re in, when it comes to dating, even if it is speed-dating, basic rules still apply. The most important tips for speed-dating are to be kind, be open, and be you. You’re going to meet a lot of interesting people, and you shouldn’t be afraid to let yourself be known. If the event doesn’t quite go according to plan, don’t worry. There is no limit to how many times you can give speed-dating a try. As the saying goes, there are plenty of fish in the sea and there’s one out there for everyone. Just be kind, be open, be you.

Jon Baron, Maryland Gov. Candidate Doing What Works Article By Nyah Marshall Photography By Tracey M. Connor

July 2022

Outdoor play with childhood friends and connecting socially with his community were all fond memories that defined Jon Baron’s upbringing in Montgomery County. “We walked to the elementary school. They had a recreation center for any kid to use during the summertime,” Baron began, “My favorite memory was playing wiffle ball all day, every day, during the summer. It was just a wonderful neighborhood to grow up in.” Baron’s dad, a former medical researcher at the National Institutes of Health, and his mother, a former special education public school teacher, fostered a childhood home that would prepare Baron for his latest endeavor— running for Governor of Maryland. Under the campaign slogan, “Let’s do what works,” Baron is one of ten Democratic candidates working to be the next governor of Maryland, as incumbent Republican Governor Larry Hogan is serving out his last term. The primary that Baron is anticipating, which could make him the Democratic nominee for the election, will take place on July 19. The general election will take place on November 8, 2022. Baron’s lieutenant governor running mate, Natalie Williams, has similar fond memories when thinking about growing up in Prince George’s County. “When I was younger, I valued the opportunity to participate in summer fun — including both recreation and education. Experiences like those, along with being an active member of the Girl Scouts, helped to shape my younger years in Upper Marlboro,” Williams said.

25

|

Williams, who attended Virginia State University, attributes her HBCU background to one of her many qualifications that make her a great fit for the next Maryland Lt. Governor. “I just think my HBCU background brings a different type of understanding and connectedness to different communities of color,” Williams said, “When you hear Maryland, [and] you talk about Morgan State University, you know, folks just light up!” As Williams started her own public relations firm and represented some of the nation’s top leaders like the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, she developed an even stronger passion for being a change maker in communities. Advocacy work would soon become a passion of Baron’s too. In fact, in 2001, he founded the nonprofit organization, Coalition for Evidence Based Policy, an experience that’s a driving force for his campaign. Through this, he worked with Congress, and the Bush and Obama administrations to advance the idea of evidence-based policy making. The guiding principle of this policy making is that proposed government policies should be first tested in the real world and proven to work. “All 10 Democratic candidates, we all share similar goals,” Baron said, “We all want to improve public education in Maryland. We want to reduce poverty; we want to increase wages.” So, what separates Baron from the other nine Democratic candidates that are all proposing policy improvements directed at education, employment, healthcare and poverty?

July 2022

“The other candidates’ approach to achieving those goals misses a fundamental point, which is that many government programs, no matter how well intentioned they are, they don’t work,” said Baron. “What Natalie and I are offering is something that is very different. It is a focus on expanding solutions that don’t just sound good, aren’t just spending money, aren’t just well meaning, but have actually been tested in the real world and shown to make a major difference in people’s lives.” These evidence-based approaches that Baron and William are proposing for the state of Maryland encompass five main areas: education, public safety, employment, healthcare, climate change, and addressing systemic, racial inequities. Health care and wellness are of special interest to Williams, who is a breast cancer survivor. To improve health and wellness, the team plans to bring a program to Maryland that was developed in Los Angeles to reduce uncontrolled hypertension in Black communities. “It’s a program that pairs Black barber shops with pharmacists,” Baron said. “When the men come in to get their hair cut, they get screened for high blood pressure. And if needed, they get medication the next time they come back to the barber shop for the next haircut. It has been shown to reduce the rate of uncontrolled hypertension, which is a leading killer of Black men, by more than half. This is a commonsense solution. It meets people where they are, and it has an enormous effect on public health.” This proposed public health program exemplifies what a humanized, proven solution is. This is the framework for the multitude of solutions that plan to be established through Baron’s and William’s “Let’s do what works” campaign.

26

|

Over one-fourth of Maryland eighth graders can’t read at a basic level and over one-third can’t do basic math. Wages of low and moderate-income Marylanders have been stagnant for 40 years. The Maryland poverty rate has also been stagnant, with over half a million Marylanders living in poverty. To combat these issues, Baron and Williams plan to: expand high quality tutoring to every struggling first and second grader; partner with Maryland businesses to provide effective job training to young adults who want to advance; and implement an anti-poverty program for long- term unemployed residents. In terms of climate change, Baron’s and William’s strong background in founding, supporting, and developing innovative ideas for small businesses makes them a dynamic duo for this task. Among other initiatives they developed to combat the climate crisis, they plan to make Maryland a leader in green technology development by providing seed funding to early-stage green tech start-ups, and have the state join the new Transportation and Climate Initiative Program. Uniquely, they come from similar and yet complementary different backgrounds that are essential to address the growing concerns in Maryland and do “what works.” “If we’re going to make progress, we have to expand solutions that don’t just sound like they’re good ideas but have actually been tested in the real world and shown to make a big difference in people’s lives,” said Baron. “That’s been the mission of my career and this is the approach that we will bring to Maryland when we’re elected.”

Lillian’s Southern Box Catering, LLC

Elevated. Southern Inspired. Comfort Food. Article by Riley Smith Photography By Tracey M. Connor

Kenya Jenkins was inspired by love, and memories of cooking with the matriarchs in her family, to create a delicious culinary experience for everyone who tries Lillian’s Southern Box Catering. The southern-inspired gourmet catering includes brunch and lunch boxes, and true Southern desserts “made from scratch”. Affectionately called, “Missy” by her grandmother, Kenya spent many hours with her grandmother in the kitchen. “She taught me everything I know about cooking. She taught me about love for family, hard work and dedication. I want to infuse those experiences and memories into my own cooking. The name Lillian’s Southern Box Catering pays homage to my grandmother, Mary Lillian Williams-Jenkins, and my great-grandmother, Lillie Williams. I also have

roots in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from my paternal grandmother, Florence Collins Wallace, who was known for her cooking, especially red beans and rice.” Kenya’s passion for cooking led her to create Lillian’s Southern Box Catering in 2018 with her aim to be the premier box catering business in the DMV area. While she desires to share gourmet, Southern inspired comfort foods to the area, Kenya’s pursuits in serving people also have a social justice mission. Recently, Lillian’s has been selected as a recipient of the DSLBD Robust Retail Citywide 2022 Grant, and awarded the USDA Pandemic Response and Safety grant from the Federal Government. Kenya has worked in the public health space for over 25

July 2022

years. Currently, she serves as the Program Director of the Returning Citizens Program in Baltimore City, and Director of the Baltimore Health Corps [Baltimore City’s pandemic response group]. She says, “We have worked on addressing social need determinants related to the pandemic including housing, food insecurity, helping residents get health insurance, and more. A pilot program was created in Baltimore City in response to a global pandemic, and I was in charge of hiring over 40 people who had lost their jobs during the pandemic. Baltimore residents experienced a pandemic before COVID. Black and brown inner cities are struggling and I have been successful with combining my leadership approach with meeting people where they are to help them reach their potential. Previously, I worked for the State of New Jersey Division of Child and Family Development [CPS in NJ] with 80% of my caseload being African American males in the criminal justice system. I knew because of my background in human services that I wanted to bring jobs to underrepresented communities. Now, I am able to provide jobs at Lillian’s Southern Box Catering for those who are interested in the culinary arts.” Currently, Lillian’s Southern Box Catering works out of commercial kitchen space at Tastemakers in Washington, DC. They have a strong following from wonderful people they have met through the Crofton Farmers’ Market and those that live nearby. All orders at this time are completed through online platforms including their website, Doordash, Market Wagon, and Eat DinDin. In addition to growing her staff, Kenya is dedicated to opening a brick and mortar space to expand her premier box catering services. Lillian’s offers an excellent array of boxed meals and desserts on their summer menu including brunch boxes and lunch boxes. All curated boxed meals are elegantly packaged in a customized Lillian’s box. All brunch boxes come with a quiche and choice of side:

fruit medley (raspberries, strawberries & blueberries with fresh mint) or mixed greens with vinaigrette on the side or salad choice. Along with a choice of one dessert item and one beverage (Pelligrino). All boxes include utensils, linen and hand sanitizer. The lunch boxes include a sandwich (hot or cold) with a choice of potato salad, macaroni salad, orzo salad with grilled shrimp or fresh fruit. Lunch also includes chips, a choice of one dessert, and one beverage (Richards Still Water). All boxes include utensils, napkins and miniature hand sanitizer. Lillian’s prides themselves on high-level, gourmet meals with large portions. Brunch options include Country Quiche, Crab & Shrimp Quiche, Crab Quiche, Tomato Spinach & Mozzarella, or Belgium Chicken & Waffle Sandwich. Lunch options include both hot and cold sandwiches; Barbeque Brisket, Barbeque Pulled Chicken, Barbeque Pulled Pork, Jerk Salmon, Pressed Italian on Baguette, Turkey Club, Shrimp Salad, and Cucumber Sandwiches. Lillian’s also offers gourmet meals including red beans & rice, shrimp & jerk salmon, chicken pot pie, and a shrimp boil. There is also an extensive dessert menu for customers to peruse with Lillian’s Southern pies, cobblers, and poundcake. The pies are truly delicious creations including Sweet Potato, Bourbon Pecan, Key Lime, Cherry, Lemon Meringue Pie, Strawberry Pie, and Buttermilk Pie. The traditional cobblers include Blueberry, Apple, and Peach. You can also try melt in your mouth poundcakes; Butter Poundcake, Lemon Glazed, Strawberry or Marble. In addition, Lillian’s makes delectable Southern cakes and specialty desserts including Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake and Oatmeal Creme pies. Working a full-time day job, and a full-time catering service can often be a challenge to have enough hours in a single day. “As I continue to grow my business, most of the obstacles I face are having

July 2022

Lillian’s Southern Box Catering History- The Why Kenya Jenkins, owner/founder is a native of central New Jersey and relocated to Maryland for private education and AAU athletic opportunities for her son, Christian. Although the opportunities were in abundance for my son, it was difficult for me to obtain career opportunities in the DMV, although I had an advanced degree & experience. Before we moved to Maryland permanently, I recall driving my son to AAU practices in Crofton, MD, after working full time for the State of New Jersey Governor’s Office of Constituent Services for Emergency Management (in the middle of the work and school week). I was so exhausted driving back to New Jersey that I would need to pull over at the rest stop on 95 to close my eyes for a couple hours. It was only the grace of God that protected us. We never missed a day of work or school. I often glean from this experience and instill in my son that sometimes you have to do what others won’t. Lillian’s Southern Box Catering was established in Anne Arundel County on April 12, 2018. The decision to start a food business was following a layoff with the DC Government as a Contract Supervisor for the Rapid Rehousing Program. I truly enjoyed my work to empower and assist DC residents to secure and retain housing. This layoff was devastating to me, however, this is evidence that when God closes one door, he opens a window. It also helped me to invest more time and focus in my business and learn everything about starting a business. It is one thing to know how to cook and another thing to run a successful business. There are many sleepless nights and knowledge needed to run every aspect of the business. Like my grandmother, Mary Lillian used to say, “cooking is not glamorous”. However, my grandmother made it look easy and and always looked beautiful doing so. Looking back on my journey, I would not change one thing. In all of the professions that I have worked, as a Microbiologist Specialist, Human Services Practitioner for State and Local Government agencies, as an Teacher with PG County School District, and as Director for Baltimore Health Corp during a global pandemic and Business owner, my steps have been ordered. I am blessed to have the love and support of my praying mother, who was the first to believe in me and my vision to invest in my business. I have heard a lot of no’s on my journey. But God is good like that! My son, who works hard and Qis supportive of anything that I ask of him. I am also appreciative of the very first customers at the Crofton Market who support and believe in us. I was recently reminded by my aunt in Louisiana that, “it is my bloodline that has produced the tenacity and stamina that I have been producing through the years. “ Growing a business during a global pandemic is humbling and has taught me a great deal about perserverance. Our customers are interested in our story and want to know about the why and the people behind the brand. I believe in serving people and giving back by investing time and resources in young people to create educational and career opportunities. I come from a lineage of strong praying black women who fed their families and communities with good food and created lasting memories. My vision is for Lillian’s Southern Box Catering to be a household name, make an impact in communities and bring people and families together with exceptional food passed down from my family… made from scratch with LOVE!

enough time. I work full-time during the day, and then I cook at night to successfully run my business. I plan to hire more people and grow [Lillian’s Southern Box Catering]. I never knew that I was able to do both careers until I started. I continue to be successful with endurance, tenacity, and perseverance. It is so important to me to build generational wealth for my son. As a single parent, I have been blessed as he recently graduated from Elon University and now

works with me as my Operations Manager,” Kenya tells us, “All of the hard work that I put into both of my careers is showing excellent results. The exposure I received at the Farmers’ Market has been a game changer. This is not just a dream. It is happening now. I want to give the customer the experience that I had growing up and have them be a part of our family with every bite.”
