JONNIE HENRIQUEZ @jonniehphotography Jonnie Henriquez is a wedding and lifestyle photographer based out of Washington, D.C. “I enjoy art, food, traveling, and I’m at my happiest when I’m photographing people. Photography came into my life after an exhausting search for the perfect desktop wallpaper for my computer. My curiosity grew over the years as I learned more about the art of photography, in 2009, I enrolled in a photography class at school and purchased a Pentax K10-D so I could begin my journey. I was always intrigued by the whole process and always had so much fun with the camera in my hand. What I love most about working with Simply Bowie is that I’ve been able to collaborate with business owners to highlight their success.”

Milan Junchalearn has always been a leader who faces any obstacles in her life head on and turns them into success. In 2018, she opened her current location of Chi Bella, Inc Natural Hair Boutique and began expanding her brand extensively. “I have been facing the challenge of building a team of experts to be a part of a brand geared towards the health of the hair more than just style. I discovered that I don’t need a ton of stylists, but the right stylists for the brand.” When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, salons were temporarily closed and Milan knew that she had to take action. “I couldn’t operate. I went into the salon and I did a video that went viral. I had 1700 followers at first. People were arguing over my hair, whether they loved it or hated it. Then, many people began asking what products I use personally. On May 7, 2020 everything changed, I went on Facebook and discussed the products that I use. After that, I had so many phone calls that the phone lines crashed. In 20 days, I had sold $27,000 in products. I gained 30 thousand followers and became globally recognized. It became my mission to educate women to care for and understand their own hair all over the world. People began traveling from several states away. I am seeing 2 to 5 new clients a day. I realized I needed a bigger space,” Milan says. She was able to lease a 5000 sq ft location in Bowie Town Center near Macy’s. Her new, bigger location will be opening soon. Milan was also able to secure a 1000 sq ft space for the Chi Bella, Inc Braiding Spa in Crofton which opened in December 2020. “I wanted to open a braiding spa to supply quality service, but really work towards the missing elements of doing braids; shampoo, treatment, preserving the hair and allowing it to grow. I have established my own product line, Promise Kept. People love these products with all-natural ingredients created from my own personal experience,” Milan

says, “In late summer, we are bringing Chi Bella, Inc Natural Hair Boutique to Atlanta as long as we find the right space. We are also being offered the opportunity to do a reality show at the salon to focus on what healthy hair is among African American women, how it should be treated, and cared for. With this expansion, I want to bring on more amazing stylists along to my fantastic team to bring back the lost art of health to hair care. We provide advanced training, branding, and skill development. We offer childcare so that our young employees have someone to care for their children while they work. Eventually, we will become a franchise so that our employees can eventually become business owners.” Even with the successes that she has earned, Milan has faced unbelievable trials over the last year. Reuniting with her brother after many years apart, caring for her son who was shot, and dealing with the temporary closure of her business due to COVID-19. With strength and grace, Milan overcame each obstacle that stood in her way. “I had lost communication with my brother and we didn’t speak for 27 years. He had just opened an account on Facebook. I reached out to his friends and drove to South Carolina to surprise him. He was overjoyed. I realized that I had to bring him home with me. He was home with me for 30 days before he slipped into a coma from severe diabetes and passed away several months later. I had purchased a one-level home so that he could stay with me. Even though my brother has passed away, this home ended up being the perfect place for my son who has been healing from being shot. It has a yard for my granddaughter to play in. It has changed our lives. I have so much inspiration that I cannot afford to fail. My son is my inspiration. My brother is my inspiration. My faith in God, my purpose, and my spirit keeps me at peace.”

A Basket Treats Subsidiary

The exquisite, entrepreneurial and creative spirit behind Basket Treats by Alexis Streets™ is expanding. Dessert Extraordinaire Alexis Streets is preparing to open her second location, The Dessert Junkie™, in Bowie. Her original Basket Treats location in Laurel, Maryland will still serve as a dessert shop with novelty gifts, sweet chocolate-dipped treats, cupcakes, ice cream and milkshakes. We first featured Alexis in February 2021 to learn all about her dessert empire. Alexis had first expanded her business to include The Dessert Junkie™ in 2017. Alexis knew that she wanted to bring jobs to the community and continue putting a smile on people’s faces through her delicious desserts. The Dessert Junkie™ Mobile Dessert Truck currently brings treats to Prince George’s County and the surrounding areas. Alexis felt called to open another location called The Dessert Junkie™ bakery so that they could begin doing all of their baking on-site offering more gourmet desserts. She knew that she needed to find the perfect location. The Dessert Junkie™ bakery location is off 450 in Bowie. It is a full-service bakery with a state-of-the-art kitchen. There will be baked goods made fresh daily, new products including vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free items. Also included in the menu are the famous monster milkshakes, funnel cakes, donuts, gourmet coffee, and gourmet ice cream. This is also a central location for birthday cakes, specialty cakes, and wedding cakes. Alexis tells us, “We are also doing gift packaging and cards. This is your one stop shop for the perfect gift. We also provide dessert catering for corporations, private industries, the government and for events. We also connect with Bougie Balloons, my subsidiary, to provide décor for events.” Lead Cake Artist, Shavon Brown, will be in charge of creating cake masterpieces. “She is a vital piece to my puzzle,” Alexis says, “LaShawn Gates is one my balloon artists who creates

balloon décor for our events. I will be handling the majority of our outside events.” In addition to their daily goods, The Dessert Junkie™ is preparing for a fantastic Grand Opening Celebration this summer. They will also go all out for holidays and special events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Every day will offer amazing treats for their customers. There will even be something for our four-legged family members. The Dessert Junkie™ will be selling its exclusive line Primo’s Choice catering to puppies and dogs for celebrations, birthday parties, and treats. Alexis’ vision doesn’t just include catering, gourmet cupcakes, wedding cakes, monster milkshakes, dessert cups, chocolate covered strawberries, and other mouthwatering desserts. “I just want to be able to provide jobs for the community. I want to be able to keep moving. I am a self-motivator and I believe in creating your own way. A lot of people would sit there and wait for an opportunity to jump out at them, but for me personally, I try to grab the bull by the horns and do everything imaginable to make it work. It is very important for me to get the bakery running and put the right people in place so that I can move onto my next project,” Alexis says Alexis is extremely proud of the work that she and her team have put in over the last year. She is also proud that her best friend, Milan Junchalearn, owner of Chi Bella, Inc Natural Hair Studio will be opening a new location around the same time as The Dessert Junkie™. “While most people’s businesses have been failing and floundering over the last year we have been expanding. It is a beautiful story and although [Milan and I] own separate business we are building our brands together. We are always helping one another genuinely. You have to pour into other people.”

FIERCE FINANCIAL SERVICES

Wealth & Strategy Architect Terese Alexander is serving and educating the community and businesses on financial planning, operational planning, and training and development.

Article by Alyson Turner Photography by Ro Moreno

People tend think of their finances as something passive, that exists in the background of their life. The financial discussion can often seem uncomfortable and awkward. Terese Alexander, Founder of Fierce Financial Services, wants to change that conversation in the community and make a difference in the lives of those around her. “F.I.E.R.C.E stands for Faithfully, Investing, Educating, Reaching, Changing, Evolving–my community,” Terese tells us, “My motto is ‘Be bold enough to stand out while being fierce enough to break generational curses. We want people to understand how money works. Fierce Financial Services, LLC is a Wealth Management Firm that specializes in helping entrepreneurial minded professionals create generational wealth in their area of genius so that they can transition from fulfilling their employers’ dreams to fulfilling their own. We do this by elevating their mindsets, strategizing, designing and building the blueprint of their financial position while educating them on the foundational basics of financial literacy. We are broken down into three different divisions, Financial Planning, Operational Planning and Training and Development.” 13

|

May 2021

Prior to starting her firm, Terese worked as a financial architect for Fortune 100 and 500 companies. She would assist corporations to become more marketable, put procedures in place, reduce staff, and restructure the company in order to help them hit their bottom line. “In the past 7 years, I have laid off 10,000 people and in doing so I have realized that people are 100% loyal to companies that are not loyal to them. I talk to them about their mindset and ask a lot of personal questions, ‘If your position ended today, what money would you live on? Are you living paycheck to paycheck?’ We give so much of ourselves to our jobs, but how much time do we devote to making ourselves successful? Although not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur, I want to help people move into their own area of genius to fulfill their own dreams.” Why We Need Financial Planning “In our financial planning division, we train and educate you on what works best for YOU. This is not a one size fits all approach. We don’t work for clients who need someone to help with their financial needs on a daily and monthly basis, we educate you on how to do it,” Terese says, “[One example of this approach is] life insurance. People tell you to buy life insurance but don’t tell you why to buy life insurance and what you should do with it. There are different policies of life insurance; policies to fund retirement, to pay off homes and put their children through college. We are changing your mindset in order to achieve your goals. What does wealth look like to you? What does financial freedom look like to you? We really break down what the future looks like to you and where you need to be.“ Terese builds a relationship with her clients to discover their experience with money and their notions about finances which directly impacts the way that they view their finances and spending habits. “We say tell me about your finances, and about the first time you ever had an encounter with money. This plays

14

|

a part in how you handle money, how you spend money and dictates your future with money. People don’t realize their own relationship with money. I share my personal experience with money,” Terese says. “I am very transparent. I want my clients to realize that I am human and I have been where they are. They are not alone. I was at the height of my career and was laid off after a serve nerve injury in which I fell down a flight of stairs. Within 48 hours my company was calling me, asking me how I could come back to work. If this could happen to me it can happen to anyone. I ended up taking two years off of work, but I was in a position to be able to sustain. I did not miss any bills because I had an emergency fund and a savings account so I was taken care of.” One of the main missions of Fierce Financial Services is to educate the community and to give back. “I teach in 3 different high schools twice a quarter. I teach students budgeting, taxes, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship management. I believe it is really important to give back to the next generation and make sure that they have the foundation needed in order to go forward. We teach algebra, math, geometry, but we don’t explain to people how to use money, the importance of money, why they need to understand money and how to move forward from there.” The arrival of the pandemic intensified financial issues for those trying to start and sustain businesses. “Everyone wanted to get financial help [with PPP loans] and to start a business. It was amazing to me, but some didn’t understand the difference between starting a business and being an entrepreneur.” When helping with these businesses, Terese asks questions to urge people to look at their operational planning. “Do you have an operating budget? Do you formally pay yourself? Do you know what needs to happen to be successful? Do you have a financial management system?”

“What I do now is teach financial literacy to business owners through our operational planning division. I have a team of analysts who come along and structure your business, your books, and ensure that our strategy is together so that you are in alignment to receive the funds you are entitled too. We figure out exactly what needs to happen to make your company as profitable as possible and we try to figure out how to move you in the direction that you needed to be moved in to be successful. People don’t know about the business side and I come in to teach this part and a team comes in behind the scenes that does it for the business owner for the first six months. Then, we consult ourselves out of the job and leave them take the reins,” Terese explains. Fierce Financial Services is a “DO WITH YOU” service not a “DO FOR YOU” service. They work together with their fierce leaders and entrepreneurs to achieve financial success. They are making a difference in people’s lives and teaching them to trust the process and to watch it mature.

15

|

“We not only educate people on financial literacy, but we also help improve people’s mindset. Financial literacy and a healthy wealth mindset are very important. We start every morning with our clients when we send out a blast of affirmations. We start their mornings off with an email and a text message to create that wealth mindset and a positive routine. We send a mid-day message on financial literacy. We send financial tips about three times a week,” Terese says, “We ask our clients what they need to know or how they believe we can better serve them. I think we are bettering our community because we are setting them up for success, we are preparing them for the future. What happens if the pandemic goes another year? Are you financially stable enough? Do you have a plan to get you there so you are not relying on someone else?” “Our message has been so successful so far our clients have more confidence and financial stability. We help people to realize they are not alone. We build a network for those who want one. To talk to each other, to encourage other people that there is no reason to be embarrassed and that we have all been there. You feel better about your situation and you are helping others.”

WHY CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT WOMEN THE MOST

Article By Jaylin Ward

Human-caused carbon emissions from overexploitation and combustion play a major role in climate change. The United Nations says that this reality will impact marginalized genders, including women, the most. Climate change is sweeping political debates and prompting economic turmoil, but gendered conversations that account for race, and place are far and few between. Existing gender-based inequalities are worsening disenfranchised groups’ response to climate disaster placing women and gender expansive folks of color in the Global South at the top of the list of most affected people. 17

|

May 2021

Ash From the St. Vincent’s La Soufriere Volcanic Eruption

According to the UN, women form a disproportionate share of economically disenfranchised groups all over the world. Considering the lack of gender inclusivity in several sectors of society (and in this very statistic), it can only be inferred that gender expansive folks are also deeply threatened by the aftermath of climate catastrophe. Just this Spring, the Caribbean island nation St. Vincent’s La Soufriere volcano erupted several times, and its impact can be linked to our changing climate. The eruptions have left the island encased in thick ash with a putrid sulfur smell, creating an unrecognizable and hazardous environment for Vincentians, almost 50% of whom are female. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and state officials of surrounding islands have 18

|

declared that only vaccinated individuals will be prioritized in the evacuation. Barriers like this can deeply affect economically disadvantaged groups of people from evacuating. Climate migration could be exceptionally harder for people with criminalized identities. St. Vincent, like many Christian societies, still has punitive “anti-buggery” and “gross indecency” laws still on the books. Where do you go if you’ve been exiled from your family and community for your gender identity and expression? To no surprise, women and gender-expansive folks around the world are evolving the climate change conversation from just sea turtles and plastic straws to every component of the Earth’s ecosystem, which includes our communities. May 2021

Christine Samwaroo

environmental and climate organizations, like Movement for Black Lives, will be creating space for deeper conversation in climate change solutions.

is the founder of the Breadfruit Collective, an emerging NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO) in Guyana working at the intersections of environment and gender-based violence.

Samwaroo tells us that she’d like to see gender discussed as a climate change issue.

Photo Courtesy of Christine Samwaroo She tells Simply “Women make up the Bowie, “women bear majority of the world’s a compound burden poor. Women are responsible for agricultural since there are a number of families headed work and food production. This increases by women. When we have disasters fueled their personal and economic vulnerability by climate, women are affected and are to lost harvest, which results in changes in extremely vulnerable. It is an added layer to temperature, floods, and droughts. When get back to “life as normal.” disasters happen, women are more likely to be killed.” The ability to respond to climate catastrophe is based on accessible and affordable healthcare, medicine, currency, immigration services, and transportation.

According to the Texas Council on Family Violence, the lack of information on the severity of Hurricane Harvey coupled with the shelter-in-place mandates left survivors in housing situations with their abusers. Samwaroo says, “1 in 2 women in Guyana experience intimate partner violence, this is an issue that often results in the death of many women.” Imagine trying to escape the rubble from several earthquakes with a child latched to your chest, and no support system to turn to? Infrastructural and societal barriers fomented by gender and class around the world play a major role in deciding who can escape, and who will bear the brunt of the environment.

“As part of the Small Island and Development States (SIDS) we need more investment into programs and opportunity as we begin to discuss climate change at the intersection of gender.” Motions forward, like this, encourages international accountability networks that align with climate and environmental activists like Christine. In 2018, Frontline Defenders: Black Rock reported that 77% of human rights defenders who were murdered were defending land, and/or indigenous peoples’ and environmental rights. Despite COVID-19, The United Nations Climate Change Conference will take place in Glasglow, Scotland from November 1st to November 12th. Though we haven’t even broken into the summer yet, it’s important to create community solutions that will alter the Earth’s course.

Mother’s Day Gifts

Article By Lauryn Forbes

W

ith every year comes a new challenge of what to get one’s mom for Mother’s Day. With all they do, it may seem almost inadequate to try and repay them one day a year. Despite this, it is important to get her something meaningful - and something that she will actually use. As we all know, no mother is the same, therefore it is vital to pay attention to her hobbies, passion, and day-to-day life.

For At-Home Mothers If your mother has been quarantine-ing like a pro, odds are that by now she has probably seen almost everything on Netflix. If she’s seeking another form of entertainment, It may be worth it to check out book subscription services 22

|

such as Book of the Month, My Coffee and Book Club, and The Book HookUp. With so many options of genres, bundles, and price points to choose from, cabin fever will be an afterthought this Mother’s Day. May 2021

For New and Expecting Mothers Within the past year, the need for comfort has grown exponentially. When working from home became the norm, stuffy uncomfortable clothing became a thing of the past. Adding babies to the picture only serves to emphasize this. If you have a new or expecting mother in your life, consider gifting her some comfortable loungewear. Stores like Victoria’s Secret, Nordstrom, and H&M are great places to start. If you aren’t sure which style she prefers, a gift card is always a welcome thought.

For Working Mothers Working from home has introduced a set of challenges previously unthinkable. Upgrade your mother’s at-home desk space by investing in some wireless earphones or headphones to block out any noise that may threaten to distract her during her workday. Brands such as Apple, Samsung, and JBL offer different levels of personalization and power. A new pair of stylish and modern earphones will make her the envy of her work Zoom meetings.

For the Sentimental Mother For mothers that appreciate something a little more personal or unique, it may be a good idea to seek out a custom or handmade gift that she will likely cherish forever. Some popular custom gifts include matching jewelry sets, monogrammed clothing and accessories, and even home decor. Websites like Etsy are a popular place to get custom or handmade items, and also give platforms for small businesses.

For the Dog Mothers Any self-proclaimed Dog Mom deserves the best for her and her pup(s) this Mother’s Day. Consider gifting her something that both her and her dog can enjoy, such as a dog treat making kit. With countless recipes, gifting her the knowledge and power of dictating what she’s feeding her dog will be a treat in itself. In addition, decorating the treats adds a fun experience for the Dog Mom in question. 23

Having a few specific documents in place can help you and your loved ones take control over situations that can otherwise feel completely out of control. Attorney Suren G. Adams with Adams Law Office, LLC took some time to explain why getting your house in order with estate planning is critical. “We have all been impacted by the pandemic and we have all seen how unpredictable the future can be. Who would have thought the world could shut down the way it did during 2020. Even in the midst of unexpected circumstances, one of the few things you can control, is to make sure your financial and health care wishes are 26

clearly and legally communicated to loved ones and that if you have kids under the age of 18, they are taken care of by the people you choose if something happens to you.” “Our goal is to caringly provide the highest quality service for each and every client, each and every time. We get to know our clients well and pride ourselves on exceeding expectations.” “With our estate planning clients, we customize plans to meet the needs of singles, couples, and parents, whether your kids are adults or still minors. We make sure that we are addressing the specific concerns of each client so that if the unthinkable happens, your loved ones are protected, cared for, and kept out of court, and out of conflict.” Ms. Adams says that every adult

should have some sort of estate plan in place. “As soon as kids turn 18, parents should make sure that they have a Power of Attorney and Advance Healthcare Directive in place for them, so that someone is legally named to be able to access medical information and make financial decisions if the young person is ever incapacitated. Without these documents, parents can be left in the dark about their young adult’s medical condition.” This only becomes more important the older we get as we want to make sure that only the right people have access to our finances or are able to make medical decisions if we are incapacitated. “If you own real estate, a Trust is definitely recommended so that your estate does not have to go through probate. If you just have a Will, your estate would have to go through probate, which is costly, causes a delay in distributions, and is public, which invites predatory access to your beneficiaries.”

From the Experts As the pandemic began, I started thinking about how to offer some reassurance during this difficult time for everyone. Then a couple of weeks into the shut-down, my husband had to self-quarantined in our basement because he was suffering from coronavirus symptoms. Then all of a sudden one night in the middle of his quarantine, I got a high fever, aches, and pains. I had a sleepless night filled with worry. My mind immediately went to thoughts about my son and what would happen if both my husband and I had to go to the hospital or worse. We had just updated my son’s Guardian designations earlier in the year—did I remember to let the new designees know where our planning documents are? Did I mail them their copies of the Guardian designations and the Medical Power of Attorney for my son in case HE got sick? What about my mom, who is 82, that we saw recently—did we get too close to her? Does my sister have a copy of my mom’s Healthcare Directive? It was a long, horrible night. I thankfully felt better in the morning after taking some Tylenol and as quickly as they came on—all the symptoms were gone. My husband recovered also, but it took 2 weeks. Thankfully, my plan has been completed for many years now and is updated frequently. It allowed the only peace of mind I found that awful night. I do estate planning every day, and clients always tell me how much relief they feel when their plan is completed. I had that same feeling the morning after that fever when I pulled out my documents and verified everything was in place. I even made a couple of tweaks while I had everything out. My advice to our past estate planning clients is to make sure that the people who need to know are updated about where your planning documents are and that your documents themselves are up-to-date. If you do not have your estate plan completed, start with this free guide that my mentor prepared where you can at least create a list of assets so your loved ones know what to take care of: Create Your Free Resource Map. You can also sign up to meet with us. What I can say for sure is—in this time when there are so few things within our control, this is one of the few things that we CAN control. It is an assurance we can offer that not only brings peace of mind to our clients, but to their families as well. It is truly a privilege to serve generations in our community.

In addition to estate planning and probate, Adams Law Office also helps clients get their financial house in order through debt elimination with consumer bankruptcy. “With the financial pressure so many families have encountered during the pandemic, we are privileged to be able to help clients get a financial fresh start. We then focus on credit rebuilding, so that becoming debt free is just the beginning of a successful financial future. These matters can seem overwhelming, but the Adams Law Office team are able to help you. “We have a rockstar team, and we all love making a difference in our clients’ lives.” “We also offer webinars to the community to further educate on estate planning so you can feel fully informed about these important matters.”

SIMPLY TRAVEL NOW

Article By Lauryn Forbes

over a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, it is safe to say that the while they were fun while they lasted, but “staycations” are getting kind of old. With vaccination numbers on the rise in the state of Maryland and the country as a whole, many are beginning to question when and how they can safely get back into the world of travel. There are many variables that affect this, but it mostly relies on the comfortability of the traveller. With this, as states begin to reopen their tourism industries, the CDC has released guidelines on how to travel safely. One tip that many are starting with are domestic trips that are within driving distance. One way to relieve the fear of transmission is being in control of one’s own transportation. Going somewhere drivable eliminates the need to take transportation such as planes, trains, and buses, which have their own safety concerns. Plus, the journey of a road trip can be half the fun. We are lucky in the sense that lucky in the sense that there are numerous destinations within drivable distance. Looking for a relaxing getaway? Consider staying in a resort at one of Virginia’s many wineries. According to the state’s website, there are more than 300 wineries in the Commonwealth alone. However, if the ocean is what you are seeking, it may be worth it to check out semi-nearby beaches such as Ocean City and Virginia Beach. Many are opting to stay in oceanside rentals rather than risking a hotel stay. AirBnb and Vrbo, who both have implemented their own Covid-19 rules, is another option for those that do not want to stay in a hotel. According to the CDC, private rentals are a safer option than hotels or even staying with family that is not a part of your household. With all of this in mind, it is also important to remember that vacations do not always have to be traditional. Camping has emerged as a popular getaway option in times where open air feels like the safest option. For some, sleeping under the stars can be just as relaxing as a five-star resort. However, the CDC recommends avoiding camping in dormitory-style settings with many people and shared facilities. Places like Deep Creek here in Maryland, which opens for camping on May 20, and Bull Run Regional Park in Northern Virginia are popular camping destinations around the area. As this is continues to be an ever-evolving situation, it’s important to remember the safety aspect of vacationing in a pandemic. The most important thing to remember when traveling is to make sure to research and follow Covid-19 guidelines that these areas may impose. Make sure to wear a mask in communal areas and try to utilize outdoor dining and excursions when you can. Whether vaccinated or not, consider getting tested before and after the trip, and make sure to set comfortability boundaries with anyone you may be traveling with.

Why you should start a garden this

summer

Article by Jaylin Ward

ow that the last frost has passed, it’s time to start thinking about what your summer garden will look like- even if you had not considered it before. Gardening is an essential practice to ground yourself in this digital world, and it can be shared with others or be an exclusive happy place for you. Maryland is in USDA Zone 7a which means you can’t have an avocado tree in your backyard, unfortunately. Don’t worry though! You can still grow tasty red, purple, or green tomatoes and herbs to go with your avo toast at home. Whether you have a window sill, volunteer at a community garden, or have your own land land, we have a few ideas for you.

Experimenting with different shapes Nature is symbolic of so many things, especially the idea of a safe space. Creating a sanctuary garden with flowers, herbs, and nourishing food can amplify that symbolism by crossing over into your diet. What if we amped that up even more? Carving shapes into the soil like hearts, peace signs and spirals can create a visual aesthetic that will keep you in the garden all summer.

In the West African Akan society, Adinkra symbols an ever-expanding system of geometric and stylized images are used in fashion, architecture, ceremony, and even combat. Sowing seeds in the shape of symbols like the “fofo” can make a beautiful display in your garden. The Adinkra symbol represents the Akan saying that jealousy is not becoming of good citizenship. These sunflower-shaped bends would form a reminder to share the Earth’s abundance with neighbors.

Permaculture Forest Garden Forest gardens reflect a cheerful confusion, with companion plants growing next to each other like... a forest. The permaculture part is what takes this to another level. Permaculture emphasizes replicating a natural ecosystem in a garden, getting a yield, and producing little to no waste by coupling a compost system with your space. Permaculture forest gardens rely on native plant species, ground cover (like the weeds you’d usually try hard to remove), and wild trees. For readers with a brown thumb, taking this step can be an eco-friendly way to get into

gardening without the guilt of throwing away a dying plant. Native plant species can thrive without punctual watering, and caring for them will maintain biodiversity and provide stormwater management in built environments. Weeds like plantain, chickweed, and bitter dock actually have beneficial health properties from stopping itchy bug bites to healing burns. Adding peach, apple, pear, or even fig trees to this mix will add colorful foliage to the endless green scene. You won’t have fruit this summer if you start with saplings. Planting vining fruits like strawberries and watermelon can add texture and fulfill your farm-to-table fantasy more immediately. If you can’t draw on paper let alone in the dirt, you can still have an aesthetically pleasing garden that is just as nourishing and peaceful.

Regrowing produce For apartment dwellers like myself, houseplants are cool but what about edibles? Herbs like thyme, basil, oregano, and cilantro can thrive very well indoors. Adding any fresh clippings of these to a glass jar with purified water will encourage root development. After a healthy system is built, you can go ahead and pot your clippings and place them in a sunny windowsill. This process is called propagation. You can even try it with scallions, and romaine lettuce- my personal favorites. If, like me, you’ve brought several houseplants during quarantine, you can grow your own with untreated sweet potatoes too. Following the propagation method above, a sweet potato will give you fast-growing, low-

maintenance spiraling vines fit for a bookshelf in your Zoom background. Those vines are called slips and, if you are bold, you can propagate those to grow more sweet potatoes. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the DIY spirit in many of us. Another lesson we can’t forget is the need for community care and mutual aid. You can be a changemaker in your county by starting or volunteering at a Community Supported Agriculture collective through your garden. According to the USDA Economic Research interactive map, several parts of Prince George’s County are experiencing food apartheid. This means that there are barriers to access healthy food like racial inequality, low income and unreliable transportation. Books like Farming While Black by Leah Penniman provide a great resource for different urban and rural organizational farming styles that can add value to your community. Whether you have a green or brown thumb, there are enough seeds to go around.
