LOCAL LIMELIGHT WHO IS SYLVIA JOHNSON?

Successful Business Owner Sylvia Johnson is running for Maryland State Senate to implement the change that will better her community. 8

|

May 2022

Sylvia Johnson saw a need for change and decided to rise up to meet that need head on. “Although I am not a career politician, I have been in and around politics all my life. I grew up in Le Droit Park in Washington DC. I lived around the corner from Washington DC’s first African American Mayor, many community activists, Aldermen, and [other] people who [worked in politics]. I have interacted with them since I was a young person,” Sylvia says, “I moved to Bowie in the early 90s and I’ve seen firsthand how it has changed quite a bit. I have seen some good changes and some stagnation. One of the reasons that I felt it was a good time for me to enter into the political arena was because as a business owner, a mother and a concerned resident I wasn’t seeing the changes that needed to be made. I vote. I reach out to my elected officials, and sometimes you still don’t get answers. Rather than sitting on the sideline I want to make a difference.” Ms. Johnson’s professional career has given her an up close and personal look at the issues that directly affect the community every day. “I run a very successful company that has been in business since 2011. I am on the board for Doctors Community Hospital, and I am on the board for the Bi-County Business Roundtable. I am seeing all of these [issues] daily. I am also an advisory board member for the Prince George’s County Technology Council. There are repetitive themes that must be addressed in health, business, community, and education. I am not seeing those things reflected in my community the way that they can and should be,” Ms. Johnson tells us, “If you are passionate about something, then

you do something about it. This has led me to run for office; to be a positive change in my community and lead by example. I mentor other business owners; I mentor other women in business and college students. I lend my expertise and my resources. I don’t want anything in return, it is just a part of who I am. I will bring that same level of tenacity and enthusiasm to the role of State Senate. The primary drive is that I am a voice, and will be a voice for our residents who have been left unheard and marginalized by our elected officials.” We spoke with Ms. Johnson to learn more about her platforms, goals, and vision going forward.

What Are The Platforms That You Are Running For? Why Are They Important To You? More Schools – Having more schools has always been a continuing request especially where I live in District 23. We have older schools and a lot of development in our community. Our schools are bursting at the seams. I selected my platforms on feedback from the community. I asked residents: What are the things that keep you up at night? What are those concerns? What are the things that would make you leave or move away from this community or from Prince George’s County? People love living in the community, it is affluent, it has great history, yet our education system doesn’t reflect that. A lot of people are tired, and as elected officials it is our job to sure our schools get everything that they need. To make sure our children get what they need, and our educators are supported by us.

9

|

Police Reform – This does not mean defunding the police. It means ensuring that our law enforcement officers interact with our community and that any misconduct is reviewed and assessed properly. I have members of my family in law enforcement, but I also have an African American son. Like many parents, I see my son as the face of some of the young people in the community who have lost their lives at the hand of law enforcement. I want him to be safe and I want other young people to be safe as well. I also want those who are in law enforcement to be safe while engaging with our community residents. These are not just my concerns; more so these are the concerns of our residents. Better Healthcare – We saw the lack of access to healthcare during the pandemic. Unfortunately, because of that lack, there was a disproportionate number of deaths in Prince George’s County of black and brown folks. We need to make sure there is access to healthcare. Doctors Community Hospital, located in Lanham, Maryland, opens its doors to all regardless of your insurance status. They serve the uninsured, underinsured, and the disadvantaged. I want to make sure that our medical facilities can handle the needs of the community. Being a board member, I had the privilege of having those conversations on how to help during Covid. My company fed the emergency room staff at the hospital and the fire stations. This was my way of saying thank you and showing my understanding of the sacrifice that all of our front-line heroes make while putting their lives on the line.

Less Traffic & Smarter Development – We need to keep our roadways less crowded. I am pro-opportunity, but we have a lot of development in our community around 301, 214 and Church Road. The folks who live in these communities are concerned about the traffic, pollution, and the increase in people. If you add several thousands of people to a community that is already overwhelmed, you are further exacerbating the congested roads and impeding travel because of the traffic. We need to add more schools and increase the roadways for smarter development.

What do you think it is about you and your platforms that makes constituents want to vote and stand with you? I genuinely care about people. It is not for show, and it is not for recognition. I care about how we live as a community. When I call and talk to people, I engage with them. Sometimes you only see elected officials when they are running and then you never see them again. There are times that I actually give constituents my cell phone number so that they can call my direct line. If I don’t see their call, they can send a text message and I will respond. My commitment to the community is evident in my philanthropic support. When the pandemic hit and patients were separated from their loved ones because of no visitation at the hospital, I raised funds to purchase 11 iPads to keep families connected. When the hospital was running low on PPE, I personally went to all of the local dollar stores and purchased ponchos for the physicians to use for protection. I volunteer in the community. I participate in toy drives and coat drives. I am a sponsor for ExtraOrdinary Birthdays which was founded by Schinnell Leake; Executive Director. A part of what they do is sponsor birthday parties for children whose families are in transitional housing. They throw each child a birthday party during their birthday month. Each party is personalized with a theme, personalized decorations, a custom-made birthday cake with the child’s name on it, gifts, party favors, for the party guests, and age-appropriate books. I sponsor those parties and the parents get to enjoy throwing a birthday party for their kids. I’ve started a scholarship program for young ladies whose mothers are single parents. I was appointed Commissioner on the Human Rights Commission protecting the Civil Rights & Civil Liberties of the more than 900,000 residents in Prince George’s County protecting residents from discrimination practices. I will continue to use my resources and connections wherever there is a need in the community.

What are your campaign goals for this year and beyond? My primary goal is to represent the residents of my district as an elected senator. I will be the first woman and the first African American elected as Senator in District 23 ever. People feel that they have not been heard and they have been marginalized and dismissed. We know it is legislative; we know it is policy, but you are elected because people feel that you will act in accordance to their best interests.. That is what I plan on doing. My goal as an elected senator is to do the work. I am going to show up, be present, represent our residents, be their advocate, make the tough decisions, and above all the right decisions. I am no stranger to making critical decisions. I am a scientist and I’ve worked in my industry for almost 30 years. That is what pushed me to start my own business in an industry that does not have a lot of women who look like me. Along with my intimate knowledge of science and vaccine technology; I managed the Vaccine Inspection and Safety Program for the FDA for more than 10 years, I’m a Subject Matter Expert in my field, and I’ve held executive positions leading managing teams. As a business owner, I have been blessed to employ hundreds of people. I serve on the Advisory Board for the Prince George’s County Technology Council, whose mission is to build a stronger technology core and infrastructure therapy increasing educational and economic opportunities in our community. I was also representation for the United States of America on an international committee handpicked by the Clinton Administration to represent my Agency. On that committee, I helped to develop policy and regulations protecting the public health in the nation. I have negotiated Agreements that are enacted as laws governing drug safety in the US and Europe. I have shared all of this with you to say that I understand the challenges of being in a position of standing out. It has only made me stronger and I will be consistent in making the right decisions for the community.

CANNABIS INDUSTRY

TRAILBLAZER LINDA MERCADO GREENE Article By Nyah Marshall

“East of the River”—Ward 7 and 8 of D.C.— or even referred to as “the wrong side of the tracks” by outsiders, has long been known to bear the burden of health disparities, violence and poverty in the District. The area remains a food desert and offers no functioning full-service hospital nearby—these disparities became the motivation for why, public relations specialist, political advisor and Chair of the DC Cannabis Trade Association, Linda Mercado Greene, wanted to bring her medical marijuana dispensary, Anacostia Organics, east of the river to serve this primarily Black, working-class community of D.C. natives. “I have a lot of love and respect in this community. Everybody calls me mom, you know, the guys that have been around, I›d like to see some of them get in this business legally. And I know they would if they had the resources to get in it legally,” said Greene. “And they all support me. I invited them all to my grand opening. They were all right there. That›s one of the things I like about this community—it’s very family oriented and it still has a lot of Black roots here.” Originally from Newport News, Virginia, Greene has lived in D.C. for over 50 years and makes it a mission to pour back into the community that pours into her while diversifying and advocating for an industry that has predominantly benefited only white males. As one of the few Black women in the country with a medical cannabis dispensary license and one of the first ten Black women to win a license nationwide, Greene is certainly doing just that.

anybody else, out of all my colleagues, I›m the only one that lives in the community they serve,” said Greene whose property happens to sit on the land that Fredrick Douglass used to own. With a mission to bring patients in D.C. “the highest quality cannabis medicine in a warm, friendly and professional environment,” on January 24, 2019, Anacostia Organics (AO) celebrated its’ grand opening with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony attended by Mayor of D.C., Muriel Bowser, and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. On this day after the business was blessed with an African libation ceremony, doors opened and Anacostia Organics became the first medical dispensary in historic Anacostia. AO is more than just a facility for medicinal cannabis. The facility is ran by a diverse staff and serves as a rotating art gallery for local artists—an asset that exemplifies the unique and culturally rich nature of the community it serves. Greene, who is considered a Washington insider, didn’t always aim to be a trailblazer and key influencer in the cannabis industry on a local and national scale. However, her ample experience in the local, national and international political sphere— serving as Chief of Staff to The Honorable Marion Barry and representing Congressional Black Caucus members, African ambassadors, and even Nelson Mandela while he was president—definitely aided her new venture. Through it proved to be a successful feat, it wasn’t an easy one.

What helped make AO—the first DSLBD CBE cannabis company—possible was a 2017 legislation that gave preference to minority-owned businesses looking to get into the cannabis industry. Despite marijuana being legalized for recreational use in D.C., Africans Americans still account for 90% of those arrested on weed-related charges, even though they make up 45% of the city’s population. Advocates argue that legislation advocating for racial equity in the cannabis industry, like the one that jumpstarted AO, could help amend policies that still disproportionately incarcerate Black people for these charges.

“I had already spent more than a million dollars the day my door opened,” said Greene who started the process of owning a dispensary in 2014. Like all dispensary license holders in D.C., Greene was required to have 100% community buy-in along with elaborate security and staffing plans prior to applying for one of city licenses, which most of which had previously been awarded to white men. These requirements, which in large part are due to D.C.’s lack of statehood, makes it extremely difficult for Black entrepreneurs and those without generational wealth to reap the same benefits that others have who are in this business. “It’s a long, laborious and expensive process,” said Greene.

“Historic Anacostia has really come along. And that›s why I wanted to open my business in my own community. When I did that I was the first and only. I don›t think

way, co-author of the best selling book, “For Colored Girls Who Considered Politics,” Sherri N. Blount, a practicing attorney of over 30 years in D.C., and Tina Flournoy, the chief of staff for Vice President Kamala Harris, the process to get a license would begin. “I was at dinner one night with some girlfriends, so we got together regularly… We just looked at each other and said, you know, we should go into that business because we’re products of the 60s,” said Greene. “We didn’t do anything for a while, but we got together a couple of weeks later started talking about it again and the next morning, we got up and created a company. “They’ve always been the persons to mobilize the Black community, and to stand up, you know, for what we want.” In the few years that Greene has been in the cannabis industry, she has already stimulated real change. Under her leadership as the Chair of the D.C. Cannabis Trade Association and former Chair of the D.C. Medical Cannabis Association, her accomplishments are outstanding. Due to her work, patients can now apply online to obtain a medical marijuana cards, she successfully implemented the acceptance of medical marijuana cards from any state in the U.S. and during the Covid-19 pandemic, Greene has worked the Mayor Muriel’s Administration to allow curbside pickup, home delivery, and an extension of medical marijuana cards for D.C. residents.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays on the Hill involves trying get Congress to deschedule cannabis and implement safer banking legalization for cannabis companies. Due to marijuana still being illegal at the federal level, most big banks and credit-card networks do not work with cannabis companies. That has created a conundrum for Anacostia Organics and any company that touches marijuana—they’re often forced to do all business operations cash, including having to pay employees in cash. Greene did not know the extent to which this would impact her once she put her name on Anacostia’s license. “Once a license is in your name. I am now I’m now operating a federally illegal business.,” said Greene. “So now I can’t get a credit card. I can’t get a home equity loan. I can’t get a new car loan. My credit is done. And most people don’t know that.” These implications have motivated Greene to want to become “the poster child for safe banking.” “Because here I am a minority woman living in a city with a license, I want more licenses. But I can’t get anything out of my home for me to even put in applications and stuff for licenses. It’s critical to all of us in the industry,” said Greene.

“We were the first ones to come out and say, we’re going to fight this and we are going to make sure that this industry diversifies and not just token diversity, but equitable inclusion,” said Greene.

Among other accomplishments, Greene hosts “Cannabis Conversations Podcast with Linda Mercado Greene,” is the first cannabis media production by the Government of the District of Columbia; she served as the the National Director of Fundraising for the Million Man March inn 1994; she brought internationally acclaimed entertainer, Michael Jackson, to be honored by AASA in D.C.; and she was honored by MEA Magazine as one of the top “50 Women of Influence and Power.” She’s an embodiment of her sun sign, Aquarius, and is a natural born leader, gifted humanitarian, dedicated to human rights and is always up for the next challenge.

In fact, it seems as though that’s only the beginning of Greene’s cannabis lobbying and diversity advocacy work. These days, the nature of the lobbying Greene does on

If there’s anyone who can help lead the efforts to deschedule cannabis and diversify the industry, it’s definitely Linda Mercado Greene.

Linda also served as one of five members of the Executive Team of the Cannabis Trade Federation (CTF), which she preceded as a strategic advisor and created that Cannabis Trade Federation diversity, equity and inclusion task force.

SURVIVING Post-Graduation Blues Article by Courtney Williams

May is the month of Mother’s Day, where we show our appreciation to all the great women who raised us and helped us get to where we are today. It’s also the month of graduations where mothers get to appreciate the products of their years of love and sacrifice. While graduations are a time for recognizing the accomplishments of students, they may have a bittersweet undertone. Graduation means changes. Graduation means your not-so-little one gets ready to tackle a new chapter of their lives. This new chapter brings a whole new set of challenges that may be a bit intimidating for parents and students alike. Like any new experience, there is some anxiety that can be expected. When dealing with a child going through a huge life change it’s hard to know what to say to ease their transition. Maybe they are looking forward to the experience or maybe they’re feeling a bit uneasy. Maybe they’ve come out of school with all the determination in the world, or maybe they are a bit too comfortable putting their plans on hold. When anxiety kicks in for students the parents may be conflicted. Do you get involved? Or do you give your child the freedom to figure it out? As your child grows and develops, so does your role as a parent. You were once your child’s whole world, and now they’re going out to see where they fit in it all. If you’re feeling a little uneasy, you’re not alone. There are no handbooks for parenthood, and nobody quite has all of the answers, especially when a new phase of parenthood is creating new demands. Graduation season can be a stressful time for a lot of parents but there are ways to have a less stressful and more positive outlook of what’s next to come. With a little help from family counselor, Meredith Gardner, we have some tips on how to deal with it all.

16

May 2022

Why do you think graduations can be so stressful for the parent(s)? “This is interesting because I think high school graduation is almost more of a change for the parents because they become empty nesters, whereas college graduates have already been out of the house. It’s a lot more change for parents I think going from high school to college, but I can also say these days life is expensive, especially depending on where you’re living. You’ve got 30% of college kids who are returning home now. I think I could say on a couple of fronts that maybe parents who were enjoying the empty nest are not really ready to have kids come back home because those are hard dynamics to manage, cause often you fall into the same pattern of kids start acting like kids instead of the adults they now are.”

What are some ways to help a graduate who may be struggling with anxiety about their next steps (going to/ leaving college, moving out, starting a new job, etc.)? “You’re trying to raise good independent humans. I often think these days, parents are not raising kids who can manage a lot on their own and there’s so much over parenting and parents coming to the rescue. Parents taking a step back the whole way is important so that kids can learn to be resilient early on. I mean any time there are changes, transitions produce anxiety because it’s the unknown, and sometimes you just have to do it. Obviously, your child got through college, they graduated, they are prepared. I think there’s nothing wrong with having the cushion of home, but I also think you don’t want your kids to be too cushy. Again, because you want to promote independence, for that kid who doesn’t know what’s coming next, you want to be supportive, but you don’t want to do it for them. You can give ideas about things and suggest people they can talk to about what they can do, but you can’t get in there and do it for them; you don’t want to over function. I also think when kids move back home, certainly if they’re there for more than a few months, have rules and guidelines for them too. If you make it too, too cozy at home, they may never want to leave.”

In cases where the graduate is leaving the house, parents often report more arguments leading up to their graduate’s departure date. Why is this happening? “I don’t even know how much of this people are cognizant of, but it happens so often, and it makes it easier for [your children] to leave. It’s harder to leave someone that you’re super close to and love, but it’s easier to leave someone you’re fighting with. I think a lot of it is very unconscious, but you start getting at each other and then it makes it easier for them to leave you cause that’s the transition. That’s really hard when you’ve had this kid in your house for 18 years and they’re leaving, and even if you’ve got the other siblings who are still at home, it’s usually much harder on parents when kids go to college, then for the kid. Hopefully, if you’ve done your job right, you’ve raised these kids and even if they’re anxious, they’re still ready for this new experience.”

May 2022

How do you encourage a graduate who may not have an established plan for what comes next? How do you start that conversation while avoiding a blow up? don’t know how much is possible and it’s so hard for “I parents because they love and care about their kids. I think as a parent you give suggestions; you can advise on what to do, but you can’t make them. If kids are kind of paralyzed that’s where I think it’s helpful for parents to have expectations. “Well, if you’re going to live in our house, I know you may not know what you want to do for the rest of your life, but you’re not going to sit around the house all day.” Some graduates want to wait around till they get their perfect job. But eight months later they don’t need to be sitting around the parents’ house, eating bad and watching Netflix all day. They’re not going to feel very good about themselves. We get our self-esteem by the things we accomplish and what we feel good about, and so the longer they do nothing, it isn’t helpful. I think for parents, you want to encourage and give ideas, but you really have to step back. You know, if you’re the one calling your friend to see if they’ll meet with your child for networking, that’s over functioning.”

Social media lets us see what everyone is doing. How do you avoid making comparisons between your graduate and others? “I mean, it’s hard. I am not a big fan of social media because people are basically putting their best foot forward and I’ll put it politely, sometimes it’s not even the entire accurate foot forward. They’re not telling you about the five interviews they had where they didn’t get the job or how many more that didn’t get a call back. They’re only putting the positives on there. And honestly, sometimes it’s just best to stay off social media, especially if you’re somebody who has problems not comparing yourself to others. Really you just

got to focus on you. I mean, my first job out of college, I made $19,000 and so people who made $60,000, I thought they were as rich as could be. You’ve got to do you and I just say focus on being the best you that you can be. But you don’t need to be going on Insta and snap and all of that if it’s just making you feel bad. It’s not going to help.”

What would you want graduates to remember when dealing with parents who they feel are being ‘too involved’? “I think some of it depends on if the parents are being rational or irrational about it. If you think your parents are being irrational and they think they got it covered, then speak to them, adult to adult. This is where we fall into our dynamics of, ‘I’m the kid, you’re the parents’ but if you want, sit down and say, ‘look, I’m spending these next six months at home and my goal is…’ Plan for yourself and I think that’s helpful. What are the next steps? What can you do in the short term? Medium term? Long term? I think if you realistically explain to your parents what your plan is, that’s all they want is for you to have a plan. They just don’t want you to be like paralyzed with fear or not knowing what to do. But if you feel like your parents are being irrational, and that you have it covered, then explain to them what your plan is, and I think that can help.” Those were some great insights from LPC, Meredith Gardner. If your child has made it to graduation, whether it be high school or college, be proud; you’ve helped them get there. The next steps can be tricky now that your not-so-little one will be making some big decisions. As stated by Gardner, avoid over functioning, be supportive when necessary, and have expectations. These little things can help your graduate go a long way. Of course, everyone’s journey after graduation is different but embracing change can encourage your child to take their first steps all over again.

A special thank you to LPC Ms. Meredith Gardner.

Thank you, Mom Article By Courtney Williams

Thank you, moms. We don’t tell you this enough but thank you. You sacrificed so much for us, and no amount of appreciation would be enough. You stayed up with us on those late nights and early mornings. You told us our bedtime stories and scared away the monsters from under our beds. You did those little things that made the biggest impact and you molded us into the people that we are today. Thank you for always being patient with us. We know that we were a handful sometimes. We didn’t always know why we couldn’t have the world, but we know now that you would have given it to us if you could. We understand sometimes things were hard. And we’ll admit it, sometimes we were the ones making it hard; like the times when we would draw on the wall or refused to do a simple chore. But no matter the fight, no matter the tantrum, you loved us anyway. Thank you for always being strong. You were the warriors whenever the world got too much, and you were always the gentle voice that picked us back up when we were down. You wiped our tears away even when you shed tears of your own. We didn’t come with a handbook, and we know you never had all of the answers, but you did your best and you made everything look easy every day. Thank you, mom, for showing us how to be kind, compassionate, and gentle. You not only taught us how to be the best at everything we could, but you taught us how to be good people. We may have not always agreed on what was best for us, we may not have always wanted to do things the traditional way, but we know you just wanted us to soar. And when we did, we knew you were always our biggest fan. For that, and so much more, thank you moms. It’s funny how your softness gave us our strength. We have the courage to face our fears. We have the perseverance to make it through. We have the heart to show compassion. We are who we are because of you. Thank you, moms. Happy Mother’s Day.

“As a Maryland resident of more than 30 years, I have deep roots in the region and am excited by the opportunity to bring next-level baseball experiences to our area. Our priority is to champion and invest in the team and surrounding communities, and to provide the ultimate fan experience. Our goal is to attract our fans, and bring them into the gates so that they have such a rich experience they cannot wait to return. Since the stadium was constructed over 30 years ago, we are working to upgrade the venue starting with the video board, the restrooms, the box and season ticket holder’s restaurant, ticket scanners, and bringing in Chick-Fil-A. And, to help streamline the fan experience, we’re going cashless this season for concessions! For those who still want to pay in cash, they can stop by the box office to convert cash to Baysox Bucks to buy concessions, tickets, merchandise, or to use at the Baysox Kids’ Park,” Greg tells us. “We want to reach into the community. Connection is so critical to us. We are excited to actively support MiLB’s launch of ‘The Nine,’ a new, Black-community focused outreach platform named for Jackie Robinson’s number from the Montreal Royals. We hope to create new opportunities and promote diversity in youth baseball. We want to connect with local businesses and community members. The stadium will be catered using Bowie-Based Unique Food and Beverage. Local catering company, Chesapeake Catering Company, will be in the suites and the Diamond View Restaurant. This is a new era where partnerships are critical to the future of the Baysox. We are improving the way we engage the sports and analytics for fan experience, player experience and entrepreneurs. There are options for internships, developing our pipeline, developing our talent, and being an opportunity for local jobs in the future. Bowie is the perfect intersection of Washington DC, Baltimore, Annapolis, and Virginia. It is so diverse, full of much energy and so much vibrancy, it is an exciting time for both baseball and family entertainment.” This season features an entertainment-filled 69 home game calendar—from t-shirts and bobblehead giveaways to fireworks, Nitro Circus Live Show on Sunday, June 5; DYN-O-MITE Night on Friday July 15 with Jimmie “JJ” Walker from the hit 70s TV Show “Good Times”; Star Wars Night on Saturday, July 16, Grateful Dead Night on Friday, August 26, and a Tribute to the Negro Leagues on Saturday, August 27. The player experience will be enhanced with better analytics and technology. “The Double A franchise is the critical underpinning for the Orioles Organization, and we have some of the brightest stars in the league coming through. We have a new 28 player roster. Coach Kyle Moore has moved up from the Aberdeen IronBirds. One of our big partnerships is with Bowie State University, and President, Dr. Aminta H. Breaux. We are working with Sig Mejdal, Assistant General Manager of the Orioles, and former NASA Engineer, on sabermetrics. We have students coming in from Bowie State University and Johns Hopkins to work with us as well,” Greg says, “As I am a plant-based health and fitness nut, we also plan to incorporate some plant-based options for players as well to support long-term benefits including shorter recovery times.” Overall, the goal is to allow people to come together after two years of staying apart during the pandemic. Greg says, “What better way to reconnect than an outdoor baseball game! We are commited to the community, increasing engagement, and offering great baseball and affordable family programming. Come join us at the a game this season!

Shared Sanctuary Solutions and Design Ideas Article By Nyah Marshall

It’d be nice if each child was able to have their own room, but for some families, especially growing ones, this may not always be the best and most feasible option. Space may not always be the sole reason either. In fact, plenty of families opt for shared kid’s rooms to encourage children to bond or because they have a new baby on the way. From deciding how to accommodate siblings with differing interests to figure out how to maximize the room’s space, there’s a lot to consider when trying to keep a shared kid’s room harmonious and organized. Ultimately, the way to keep the peace in a shared kids room is to make sure each child’s personality and creativity are portrayed through the design. Need inspiration and support? Check out some tips and designs that we love, and are certain will also be loved by your children.

Storage, But Make it Creative Space. Space. Space. The objective here when joining two kids’ lives into one room is to find ways to maximize space. You may not be able to fit dressers, bookshelves, or even desks in the shared room, but there are other creative ways for you to store all o their treasured items. Here are a few designs that do just that. 1.) Bed Frames With Storage Choosing beds headboard storage is the easiest and most convenient way to organize each sibling’s clothes, toys, and books. Headboard storage gives children the creative freedom to display their most prized possessions in a way that keeps toys and trinkets off of the floor! On the other hand, for those items that don’t need to be on display, bed frames with under-bed storage are ideal. They are perfect if your children desire more privacy, or have an excess of items to store. There are even countless cool, creative bunk beds that include clever storage solutions. Bunk beds with storage solutions are a great way to save space in your kids’ shared bedroom. They’re multifunctional, so mom will love them, and they leave more room for playtime, so the kids will love them too! For even more organization and space optimization, consider investing in canvas totes that’ll fit toys, clothes and books. 2.) Use the Wall to Organize When thinking of storage solutions for a shared sibling room, the key is to think outside of the box—or in this case,

28

|

think vertically. Efficiently utilizing vertical space is a smart way to add storage space to any room. You can do this by installing wall shelves for books, toys, awards, pictures, school supplies and more. Another option is, of course, to purchase organizers that keep the space clutter-free. This shoe wall organizer is a creative, modern way to free up space in a shared closet. I know, it’s scary to think about what a shared closest space may look like when things start getting messy and cluttered, but there are plenty of ways to keep it organized, neat and spacious. Remember, maximizing closet storage space will also maximize floor and wall space in the shared bedroom. Cute and Cool Ideas For Privacy A major concern with siblings who share rooms is privacy—or the lack thereof. Whether your children are around the same age or not, or of the same gender or not, everyone needs and is deserving of privacy. These situations are tough. How do you make sure each child feels like the shared room is their personal sanctuary? 1.) Beds with Curtains, Drapes and More Custom Bunk beds with curtains are a simple and easy way to make your kids feel like they have their own, personal hideaway every day. With the simple draw of a curtain, your child will feel like they have their own space at their disposal. An even more creative idea is to drape a canopy or choice over each separate space, giving the feeling of added privacy for sharing a room. This design is a little bit more mature and will aesthetically appeal to older children.

May 2022

There’s also an opportunity for mom and dad to become ultimate DIY parents and design a privacy curtain that’s playful and exemplifies the room’s theme. One of our favorite designs is this fun boy’s bedroom. The top bunk doubles as a farmhouse-inspired playhouse and is complete with a custom sliding barn and a wooden ladder that matches the design. 2.) Room Dividers Sometimes the best way of dividing a room between siblings is to literally place a divider between the two spaces. If space isn’t a concern for this shred room, a divider would adequately make sure each child has the privacy they need. A bookshelf can double as a divider by being placed in the center of the room, giving each child their own, distinct space. In the same regard, desks and dressers can double as dividers depending on what space you can spare. Another design option is diving panels that are adjustable and suitable for all room heights. This is a cheaper solution that’ll accommodate children who are a little older sharing a room. Lastly, this one’s for the extra creative parents who don’t really like the idea of a traditional bunk bed to maximize space. We love these chic, back-to-back, shared headboard beds. They are sure to please your children and give them the privacy they desire! It creates a subtle division within the room and allows for more space. Design Ideas for Siblings Who Are Complete Opposites In a perfect world, your kids would like the same superheroes, watch the same shows, have the same favorite color and be the same age and gender. However, this is not always the case and when creating a space for siblings who have little in common, you have to get creative with your room design. 1.) Less is More To make life easier, don’t stress yourself out and obese over every little design detail in your kid’s room and give children the creative freedom to bring their own flair and individuality to the shared room. Instead, only invest in the necessary furniture, and storage solutions to keep the design modern, chic and neutral so that your children have more room to play and make their room their own.

the next minute they’re obsessed with football. Save yourself the headache and give your children the creative freedom to use their designated space the way they want to. Whether this means choosing their own wall art or bedding, it’s best to give them room to grow and be themselves. Tips to Keep the Peace Other than the design aspect, another hurdle to overcome when your children are sharing a room are the conflicts that are bound to arise. The good thing is healthy conflict is normal and necessary to bring your children closer together and teach them to respect each other’s space. Here are a few ways that you can encourage this. 1.) Set Rules and Boundaries Set clear boundaries and rules so that there is an expectation about how to behave in this shared bedroom. This would be a good time to emphasize spacial awareness, privacy and cleanliness. 2.) Designated Alone Time A little alone time can go a long way and make each child feel as though they have true privacy. Scheduling alone time for each sibling in advance is something that will be valued by both of them. 3.) Make the Rest of Your Home Accessible Giving your children access to the rest of the home and making sure they know that their bedroom isn’t a space they are limited to is important. Whether it’s turning a corner of your home into a play area or a study area, this will show your children that they don’t need to be in the room all the time!

2.) Stick to classic colors If your children have opposing tastes, one area of the room design that they are bound to disagree on is the color. In this case, it’d be wise to stick to classic colors for a design they can both appreciate. Some genre neutral colors include navy, browns, reds and white. Think minimalism, modern and simple colors. 3.) Give Them the Freedom to Design Let’s face it, kids are bound to go through tons of phases. One minute they’re into unicorns and barbies, the next they’re fangirling over boybands and experimenting with makeup. One minute they love toy cars and Legos,

Bridging the Gap: Encouraging Young Girls to Study STEM Article By: Kayla-Ajanae Archer-Buckley

their ability to retain information. STEM education provides children with a host of important skills like increased creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. By now, I think we can all agree that STEM is not only beneficial for our society and youth, but it is also necessary. So why are we still seeing such a huge gender gap in STEM-related careers? Well, the answer is not that simple, and it relies a lot on the current state of our society and cultural norms. Women have been and continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields. According to the U.S. Census, Men make up 52% of the U.S. workforce but 73% of STEM workers. On the other hand, women make up 48% of the workforce and just 27% of STEM workers. It is also important to note that the gap widens when we account for race. Sciencenews.org reported Black professionals in STEM careers make up only 9% of the workforce, while Hispanic professionals make up 8%. The world we live in is constantly changing. As we progress into the 21st century, society’s reliance on technology has grown exponentially. Our current societal needs have changed significantly throughout the years, and we must ensure the future generation is equipped to handle these changes. The generations after us will have to deal with the problems we’ve caused as a society, such as climate change. For this reason, and others that we’ll discuss later in this article, STEM education has become more and more necessary. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Sometimes you may see the acronym written as STEAM. The A represents the arts and design aspect that accompanies the sciences. Although these catchy acronyms just sound like a list of school subjects, they are so much more than that. For example, if you’ve studied or majored in a field such as mathematics or biology, you’ve studied a STEM subject, but you haven’t necessarily received STEM education. STEM education has a more specific focus, but it encourages the use of critical thinking and problem solving through the integration of each discipline. In traditional educational settings, school subjects are separated and taught independently. STEM education differs because it integrates science, tech, engineering, and math and creates a cohesive cross-disciplinary program. STEM also encourages hands-on learning, which several studies show to be most beneficial for kids’ learning and

From an early age, girls already begin to suffer the consequences of long-standing gender stereotypes. A misconception some hold is that girls are simply just not as good at math and science. STEM fields such as science and math are often viewed as masculine or “boy subjects”. This has caused teachers and even parents to refrain from encouraging young girls to pursue STEM-related subjects. No evidence supports the notion of women or young girls being less capable in these fields however, the stereotypes do shape the thought patterns of our society and the young girls affected by them. Studies have found that several young girls and women are interested in STEM but they feel discouraged or illprepared to handle these subjects. Inspiregirlsacademy. org wrote that a Girls Scouts of America study found that 74% of teenage girls reported interests in STEM. However, amongst these teenage girls, it was also discovered that 47% of them would feel uncomfortable being the only girl in groups or class, and 57% said that they would have to work even harder to be taken as seriously as men. The lack of women in STEM also translates to less representation and fewer role models for young girls to look up to. For that reason, we must push for STEM education as a society and begin encouraging more young girls to pursue STEM-related careers to combat these stereotypes and close the gender gap.

May 2022

Additionally, by encouraging young girls to pursue STEMrelated careers we’re creating and adding necessary diversity to STEM fields. Diversity is important in all facets of life, to quote an Islamic Proverb “A lot of different flowers make a bouquet.” Different people offer new and different perspectives. The STEM field cannot truly grow or reach its maximum potential with only one portion of the population contributing to it. The Kenzie Academy says diverse representation allows for broadening viewpoints, asking different questions, and solving complex problems. The Kenzie Academy also provides an interesting example that displays the importance of inclusion, in 2014 Apple launched a health tracking app that allowed users to track various things related to their health such as sleep patterns. After its release, it was noticed that there was no function on the app for menstrual tracking. I’m sure we can all agree that if there had been more women involved in the developmental process of this app that mistake would not have happened.

Additionally, the STEM field is growing constantly, and it is estimated that by 2025 the United States will need to fill 3.5 million STEM jobs. The demand for these jobs is increasing, and they provide some of the highest-paying positions. The STEM field is also one of the most secure fields because of our society’s growing reliance on technology. As technology such as robots and Artificial Intelligence begin taking over other jobs, there will be less demand for jobs outside of STEM. According to CNBC.com, some economists predict that by 2030, over 1.5 million jobs in the United States will be lost to robots. Job loss could become a larger problem without the focus on STEM-centered education. That is why it is our duty as a society to encourage today’s youth, especially young girls into pursuing STEM-related careers. There are several programs and camps in the DMV that cater specifically to young girls interested in STEM. To make things a little easier for our readers, we have included five great local STEM programs for girls.

STEM for Her is a non-profit in Washington, DC. They aim to promote education, awareness, excitement, and opportunities for girls and women considering STEM careers. They provide their students with activities, mentorship, and scholarships. For more information about their programs, you can sign up on their website at Stemforher.org.

Girls Inc. DC serves its community by offering STEAM focused after-school programs and summer camps. They also have an upcoming Free Spring Series from April 11th-14th for all middle school girls in the DC metropolitan area. This series is virtual and will incorporate self-love, empowerment, and STEM exploration. To register for this workshop or hear more about this organization visit girlsincdc.org.

Girls Talk Math will be hosting an in-person camp from July 11th to July 22nd on weekdays from 9 am to 4 pm. This program is for high school students. Students attending this camp will engage in several activities, lectures, and special events such as panels and interviews with high-achieving women in STEM fields. For more information about GTM, you can visit GTM.math.umd.edu or contact girlstalkmath@umd.edu.

This is another program sponsored by the University of Maryland. I4C offers programs for elementary school, middle school, and high school students. The application closed on March 24th, but you may want to save this for next year. Unlike the other programs, this one is co-ed. This is a one-week JumpStart Computing program led by undergraduate students. They will focus on topics like Python Art, Data Theory, and Cryptography. For more information about I4C, contact i4c_l12@umd.edu or visit inclusion.cs.umd.edu/outreach#camps.

Bio-Med Tech-Girls applications are now open and being accepted on a rolling basis. The camp is open to anyone who identifies as female or nonbinary. It is hosted at the University of Virginia from August 8th to August 12th. To apply or receive more information about this program you can visit www.tech-girls.org/bio-med.html.
