PUBLISHER’s

CORNER

Take Time To Be THANKFUL A

s November rolls around, we’re anxiously awaiting the approach of Thanksgiving, the holiday season and time spent with our loved ones. The winding down of the year always brings about a time of reflection for us— remembering everything we’ve done or accomplished in months past; looking back on turkey disaster stories, mornings watching the Thanksgiving Day parade or afternoons spent curled up on the couch after one too many pieces of pie; thinking of the people, experiences and things we’ve been blessed with in the last year. As we press pause on the hustle and bustle of life putting together a monthly magazine, we’re able to look back on the past year and, most meaningfully, the stories from all of you that have made what we do possible. We also take this chance to think of those less fortunate and encourage you to take the opportunity this giving season to donate to local organizations giving back to the community. We hope that as you read this issue, you—like us—find inspiration in the lives and experiences of your neighbors and the connections that have been made. Happy Thanksgiving, Bowie!

Reflection A

s the year draws to a close, (we are only 2 months away from 2022!), I think about all of the interesting things we have experienced. This was the year that we “started again”. After living and working through Beginning of the pandemic, we entered 2021 with a new resolve and a new normal. This year we have learned not only to take life one moment at a time, but to enjoy those moments fully and gratefully. In the month of November, the month of Thanksgiving, we have some excellent articles to share from the best tips for hosting a Friendsgiving, to finding a caterer to what to wear this Fall and so much more! We hope that you will have as much fun reading this issue as we did putting it together. We are so thankful that you are here with us every single month. We are grateful for your love and support! PEDIATRIC WELLNESS What The Experts Are Saying About Oral Health in Kids

For parents, there is always a long list of things to consider when it comes to our children’s health. Are they feeling okay? Are they sleeping enough? Are they getting enough vegetables? How about oral health? One of the daily tasks that many parents can empathize with is the “teeth brushing struggle”. For many kids, brushing their teeth ranks as one of their least favorite activities. After long days full of eating snacks, it is so important to keep up with the daily routine of teeth brushing, flossing, avoiding sugary foods, and drinking water instead of juices. Along with regular dental care, this is helpful in maintaining good oral health. According to the CDC, cavities are a huge problem for children. “Cavities (also known as caries or tooth decay) are one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood in the United States. Untreated cavities can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning. Children who have poor oral health often miss more school and receive lower grades than children who don’t.”

6

|

November 2021

Statistics from CDC.gov show that, “about 1 of 5 (20%) children aged 5 to 11 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth, and 1 of 7 (13%) adolescents aged 12 to 19 years have at least one untreated decayed tooth.” Children from low-income families without access to regular dental care are twice as likely to have cavities as well. Encouraging good dental hygiene at a young age shapes children’s habits as they get older. If parents and care givers model good habits like brushing and flossing teeth, making smart food choices, and drinking water then their children will be much more likely to continue these habits. The American Academy of Pediatrics wants to ensure that expecting moms focus on their own oral health before giving birth and the baby’s oral health once

the baby is born, “Even if you can’t see them yet, those tiny teeth are there—hiding just beneath the gums. Make sure to take care of them right from the start. Wipe the gums twice a day with a soft, clean cloth—in the morning after the first feeding and right before bed. That helps wipe away bacteria and sugars that can cause cavities. Once her first tooth comes in, start brushing her teeth twice a day with a smear (rice-grain sized) amount of toothpaste. Take your baby to the dentist by her first birthday. It’s the best way to spot signs of problems early. If you don’t have a dentist, ask your pediatrician to check your baby’s mouth and help you find a dentist. For children ages 3–6: Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. It is OK to let them practice with the brush, but you get your turn too.”

HealthyChildren.org shares that having a consistent nighttime routine helps children remember to brush their teeth every day. They suggest Brush, Book, and Bed every night. “All young children need help with brushing from an adult to make sure a good job is done. When possible, teach children to spit out extra toothpaste, but don’t rinse with water first. The little bit of toothpaste left behind is good for their teeth! Once teeth touch, they can also be flossed. Visit your dentist regularly starting with your child’s first birthday or sooner if there are concerns. Your pediatrician can answer questions about oral health, too. Remember, the last thing to touch the teeth before bed is the toothbrush!”

eteran educator, Dr. Jacqueline Marshall, has over 20 years of experience working with children and promoting the value of education. After leaving the school system in 2019, she felt called upon to continue serving children in another way. “I originally was looking into a sports franchise and God placed it on my heart to serve children since I was no longer working as a principal. I came across Kumon and did my research. I felt that children needed this type of instruction to help with any instructional gap and beyond,” Dr. Marshall tells us, “I wasn’t sure where the location was going to be at the time. In February 2020, the franchise helped me to find my current location. I did the research and went through the necessary steps. In April 2020, I purchased the franchise. I thought about the schools that are in proximity and how many I could be a blessing to. We opened in June 2021, but we were meeting a local church temporarily. We received our permit to open our building on September 15, and we did our ribbon cutting ceremony on October 2.” Kumon Math & Reading Center of Bowie-Free State offers instruction in reading and math for ages 3 to 18. They are open from Tuesday to Friday after school hours from 3 to 7 p.m. Parents can call or sign up online for a free parent orientation. “In the parent orientation we talk about the process, what to expect and then the child gets their placement. It is up to the parent whether they want both reading and math or if they need just one subject area. Due to COVID being here

for a whole year there is a need. We look at what the pathway is to get them [to grade level and beyond], what skills and gaps do we need to cover now. We don’t stop at grade level. We look beyond. We know that learning doesn’t stop and why not keep going? We share the placement results with the parents and decide which days their child will attend [at least two days a week.]” For Dr. Marshall, the importance of opening a Kumon Math & Reading Center is meeting students’ needs. “Our age-range from 3 to 18 is very significant. Most tutoring centers see the need for instruction and they address the need. Once you have accomplished a skill on grade level, students are done. For Kumon it is not just that. It is that acceleration beyond. I look at the standards as the ground floor, why not reach for the ceiling, why not go beyond that? It allows the children the time to do the things they love in music, art, and sports. If a student is in the 6th grade, but starts on a 4th grade level at Kumon, they can get what they need, and continue to accelerate beyond their grade level. Then, they can focus on their extracurriculars and enjoy them rather than trying to struggle through homework,” Dr. Marshall says. “We encourage families to start early at ages 3, 4, 5 and then when they get into an instrument,

11

art, or sports, they already have a foundation from Kumon and can focus on the things that they enjoy doing. I want my son to be in a position where he can practice football, excel at football, by not having to take additional classes or struggle with studying. I am setting him up for success now. When I was a teacher, and when I was a tutor, I would help students in the moment. Here is what you are learning right now. At Kumon, we think about how to get them beyond that. We need to make sure students are able to accelerate that learning. Kids won’t have to worry about additional remedial classes because they have learned the foundational skills at Kumon. When our students enter college, they won’t have to take developmental classes. We don’t want our children to have to be in the situation that they can’t do extracurriculars because they don’t have the grades. As an educator I want to build a space that my child can attend and succeed in.” Since Kumon of Bowie-Free State has opened things have been progressing smoothly with happy students and even happier parents. Dr. Marshall knows the success will continue. “As a new business owner, you learn every day. We are constantly thinking about how to get better in terms of customer service, in terms of making sure that we are doing exactly what the children need and in terms of addressing any parent concerns. In this

November 2021

space. it is a joy to see the children saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I am learning.’ The parents are seeing their children’s needs are being met. We are just getting started. I believe in the Kumon process. It is one of those things that is not a quick fix. You don’t rush in and think it happens overnight. It is a process.” Dr. Marshall says, “Many of our students had learning gaps prior to COVID and because distance learning caused more gaps that need to be addressed. Also, we focus on progression and development so that our parents can see the process, understand the process, and accept it. It is about communicating that progress. In education, you have the trust the system of Kumon and trust my expertise as an educator. We all have a part to play for the student. If we all do our part, there is a

12

|

successful outcome. We just have to keep in mind that if there is a gap there, there is work to be done. At Kumon, we let the children work independently and build upon their knowledge. There is work they have to do, and I am there making sure they understand it.” “God placed this on my heart. I just want this opportunity to be a blessing. We have been doing this pandemic since March 2020. It is amazing to be able to offer a safe space for children to go, for parents to trust, and to make a difference in the lives of children so that they can progress in life academically. It is important to see that innate ability in children to shine and for the parents to feel that their child is doing well despite all that has happened. It is important that there is a system that works.”

Chef Cris creates magnificent meal prep, and catering for those who love great food and great service. Article By Alyson Turner Photography By Sheldon Johnson

Chef Cris grew up in Southeast Washington DC and lived with her mother. On the weekends she would visit her dad, her grandmother, and her aunt. “When I would go to my dad’s, they had the spread. The country food, the soul food, all of it. I became interested in learning how to cook for my mom so we could have it all there as well.” As she was growing up, she loved to try new recipes and watch Food Network all the time to learn more about cooking. “I would try to replicate recipes that I would see on there and I was pretty good. I felt like I could do this. My first time experimenting with cooking was a box of Hamburger Helper. I looked at the label and thought to myself, this is not healthy. I

started experimenting with my own seasoning, and pastas. It was fun to me,” Chef Cris tells us. Chef Cris went to Howard University to study architecture before her daughter was born and then took a few years off before attending the University of Phoenix for an Associate’s Degree in Accounting and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. While she was never formally trained in culinary, she has always had a love of food. When Chef Cris was living in Oxon Hill, Maryland, she enjoyed cooking and getting together with family. When someone suggested she start selling plates of her food to friends and neighbors, she decided to try it. She says, “It went really well. I got into catering by seeing how people were positively responding to my food; that energy that you get from people just loving what you have to give. That led me to starting my own company. I took a break, about 8 years, from cooking and catering while I worked in Corporate America. I would take food to work because people were tired of eating what was near our job. I had a friend that I went to school with and she said, “Why don’t you bring some of your food up here and sell it?” I asked if that was even allowed. People loved it. That is how I got into cooking again.”

18

|

Around 2017, the concept of Craveables Catering was born. A year later in February 2018, officially, Craveables Catering, LLC was formed. Chef Cris had left her corporate job because it was stressful and her cousin asked her to cater an event. “I did everything while making sure the food stayed warm and fresh. I realized that I could do this! When you are actually in the business, these things carry over. I had my first two weddings with over 100 people this year and it was an experience. I am my worst critic because I want to make sure everyone is happy with the customer service and the food,” she says. One of the main services Craveables Catering offers is meal prep. A lot of people are conscious of their health and moving towards a healthier lifestyle and better diet. Chef Cris is an advocate for health and the needs of her clients. “I am doing a lot of vegetarian meals right now and I was introduced to meal prepping when Keto was a big hit. Most of the plans are custom right now for my meal prep clients. I am working on building my menu through Meal Logics and clients can pick meals. I always like my clients to give me options of what they like,” she says. She is most known for her famous Mac & Cheese. She experimented for 8 years to get that recipe exactly as she wanted it by experimenting with different cheeses and different bases.

November 2021

Some other events that Cravables Catering offers are birthday parties and the ever-popular brunch. If you want Chef Cris to come in, she will cook onsite or she can bring the food to you. She says, “I have also done cooking classes called Sip ‘N Burn. It is a cooking class set up–you pick out the menu and I bring all of the cooking equipment for a small number of guests. The guests form teams of two and see who can plate the best. At the end of the session, they plate their own food and a photographer takes photos. I am looking to bring these events back early next year.”

19

|

For now, Chef Cris is looking forward to putting the pandemic behind her and moving toward the future while growing her business and staying humble. “My son contracted COVID and it broke my heart. He is doing better now, but we are all tired of this. My birthday is in November and that is why I wanted people to learn more about us [this month]. I never want to get a big head no matter the number of clients that I get. My business has increased 4-fold and I am always thanking God for my blessings every day.”

November 2021

It’s that time of year again, where all the leaves begin to change colors and all we want to do is curl up in our bed in cozy lounge wear while watching our favorite holiday movie. No more sweating to death from the heat of the sun and cranking the AC to the highest setting while sipping on anything to keep you cool. Fall has finally arrived, so the only thing you need to be stressing about is what are you going to buy for your new wardrobe?

waved goodbye to our former friend, the vest, it’s time to say goodbye to another loved clothing item…the “impractical” sweater. Not just any sweater, this is the sweater that is just sleeves. Nothing to cover your chest or your back, just sleeves. I’ve seen this worn by many different celebrities and each time it is a fail, so if you want to remain fashionable this season, stay far away. Now that we’ve covered what not to wear this fall, let’s get prepared to switch out our closet with all of the styles that are a must! A classy chic wardrobe is never a wrong answer according to Jazmine. Loafers, blazers, button downs, and trousers are all a must this season. I mean, who doesn’t love an elegant, sleek clean look? Another look that we need to prepare our pockets for is the infamous bootcut jeans, because sources tell me that they are making a huge comeback this fall!

As with any season, fall is the perfect time to let go of that old wardrobe and start new. After all, these fashion trends are always changing, so last year’s wardrobe just won’t due. So, take out the cards and let’s get shopping. But wait! What trends are we looking to fall into this season? No worries, fashion and beauty blogger Jazmine Mangrum has got you covered with the do’s and don’ts for this fall season. In no time, you will have the perfect idea for the most trendy and fashionable wardrobe.

Spring and summer aren’t the only seasons that are allowed to strut their bright colors! This time of year, people tend to opt for more warmer, muted toned clothes, such as tan, burnt orange and burgundy. However, many people have begun feeling more comfortable stepping out the house in brightly colored pieces, such as yellow sweaters and it’s nothing to be ashamed off! Bright colors have a way of making people feel good when we look at them, which is why they are known as “happy colors”, so don’t be afraid to purchase those brightly colored trousers this season!

Let’s start off with the trends that we need to say goodbye to. Year after year, this item always seems to make its way back into people’s closet, and we just don’t know why. Our dear friend, the vest, can never seem to leave for good. However, this season we plan to put a stop to it. No more vest purchases of any sort need to be made this fall. If you’re cold buy a jacket or throw on a sweater. The vest just doesn’t work anymore. Now, that we’ve

Oh, the weather outside is frightful, so its best that you stay inside. But staying inside doesn’t mean you have to look like you’ve been inside all day, so to fix that it’s best to purchase lounge wear pieces that can work for both in and out of the house. Jazmine’s personal favorite includes Nike sweatpants because “you can never go wrong with any of their joggers or sweatpants”. If you need to make a quick switch to going outside, there is no need to change. Just add some cute accessories and you are good to go right out the door, and no one would know you’ve been laying around in them all day. Monochromatic sweatpants help you to look both expensive and cozy all for the price of one, so it’s basically like you got it on sale and who can say no to a sale? Not me!

who love going into stores, Jazmine recommends we stop by H&M, Zara and even the goodwill. Secondhand clothing seems to be all the crazed within this year, so why not keep it going? Who knows what you could come across? Maybe a perfect condition Valentino white bag or even a pair of rare Manolo Blahnik heels, a girl can only dream… If you’re looking to avoid the hustle and bustle of the outside world, staying inside and shopping from your laptop is the perfect way to go. For this, Jazmine recommends you visit sites like those same stores, but via their online presence. As we enter a new season, our number one worry should always be what is it that we are going to wear. Thanks to fashion and beauty blogger Jazmine Mangrum we are able to strut through fall as if it is our own personal walkway. The confidence to look cozy and elegant, while staying on a budget this season has never looked so good!.

Now, that you know what you need to get, they only question left is where to go and get it at? For those of us

How to Plan the Best

“Friendsgiving” Ever Get Your Friends Together To Eat, Drink, and Be Thankful. Article by Dominique Lassiter

28

|

November 2021

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about how you want to celebrate this year! This holiday is all about celebrating what you’re thankful for , including family and friends. Last year, during the ongoing pandemic, many families were unable to come together and celebrate one another. This year, many people are wanting to finally be able to gather with their loved ones.

First order of business: Setting a date. You must start planning early (like now!) because the holidays are the busiest time of the

|

You might also want to plan around a big football game, especially if your group is full of fans and will certainly want to watch. Lastly, check the weather! The last thing you’ll want is for your friends to have to cancel on you because of a blizzard.

Next: Pick a place. Are you willing to host this get together? Is someone in your friend group willing to host at their place? These are all important questions to consider when thinking about the location of your Friendsgiving.

Want to find a way to bring all of your friends together and celebrate your friendships? Or maybe you can’t make it home to celebrate with your family this year. Whatever your case may be, look no further, as we’ve put together a list for you to follow in order to plan the best post-quarantine Friendsgiving ever.

29

year. People’s schedules are quickly filling up so you have to have an action plan very early.

If no one in your group can host, consider going to a restaurant. That way, you have a spot and you won’t have to worry about cooking and cleaning up. Finally, you must decide on what vibe you’re going for. Do you want a traditional dinner at a big table or are you fine with people eating on their laps in front of a television?

November 2021

In order to be safe during the holidays (because COVID-19 is still a big concern), consider asking your guests to take a COVID-19 test prior to the gathering. This way, you’ll be able to more effectively ensure the safety of your guests.

Now: Plan a menu Ask your guests choose a dish that they’d like to bring and be sure not to ignore any dietary restrictions within your group. Tell your guests to make it clear if they have nut, gluten or other allergies so that everyone can plan their dishes accordingly. Invitations can be created on Canva.com

Then: Send your invites! Once you have decided on the location, you’ll have a better feel of how many people you can invite. And for those friends who are also parents, be sure to make it clear whether or not children are invited. If not, you want to give them time to find a babysitter. You know that distant friend or coworker who lives far away from their family and might not make it home to celebrate? Consider inviting them, even if you aren’t close, so that you can get to know them better. It also truly represents what the holiday season is all about. Go ahead and email your invites out. Emailing is quick, simple and free, as opposed to mailed invitations (Canva is a great website to design your own invitations!). Be sure to add your contact information so that people can RSVP and to send a follow up message a day or two before the gathering to confirm attendance. 30

Lastly: Have fun! After you’ve worked so hard and spent so much time planning, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Maybe you want to go around the table and say
