Making Religion Relatable to 21st Century User
CONCEPT Sohag City is known for Religious heritage sites. Religious tourism should not only provide pilgrimage travel services for religious believers, but also provides service activities for people to understand religious culture and recognize religious culture. Studying how Coptic Churches in Egypt integrate social program within a religious context resulted in my thesis statement: Re-Inventing Sohag’s Religious Tourism into a Transformational Experience that Manifests Cultural Exchange.
DESIGN APPROACH AND USERS The campus is designed to Create a Sense of Community and Extend the Scope of Religious Tourism through the Co-Creational Experience of Users’ Shifting Statuses between Manifesters and Manifested To’s on the different dimensions of The Sohagians, Cairo-ians, Foreigners, and people of different religious ideologies. The holistic aim is exposing “The Fruits of The Spirit”Galatians 5:22 (NIV), widely accepted religious qualities.

The horizontal grid line is extracted parallel to the Nile and the Korneish to develop a parallel rhythm of experience along the Nile on site. Project Brief
Studio on design in critical Settings- Designing in Historical Contexts. A critical review of works, theories, and polemics in modern architecture. Case studies of buildings within urban settings will be the focus, with an emphasis on adaptive re-use, historic preservation, urban and landscape design practices. Within the context of a historical survey, students will develop a framework to assess and design for contemporary issues in architecture.

DESIGN APPROACH The site, El-Korba, Heliopolis, is characterized by the communal nodes affecting Al-Ahram Street. The user culture in Heliopolis is affected by the street morphology. El Ahram Street is a central axis that divides the context into 2 zones. The Western zone is a hub for malls and cinemas, the southern zone is a “pedestrian extroverted mall”.
The social nodes are highly dense near street edges creating an imaginary “Social Edge”.
The hospital design prioritizes users by designing “Communal Pockets” as an integration between the street and the building as a living organism that co-exists with El-Korba as a rich context.
HOSPITAL SPACE PROGRAM The Hospital is designed to accommodate the needs of El-Korba Residents besides the current available health centers and hospitals on site. The hospital capacity is 200 In-Patient Beds. The hospital design offers: -Emergency Department -Imaging Unit -Physiotherapy Department -Maternity Division -Endoscopy Unit
-Renal Dialysis Unit

“BUILDING INTEGRATED HUMANITY”
THE FACADE GENERATION The “Facade Generation” follows the Horizontality of the Openings and Fenestrations of surrounding Elevations and Datum Lines. The redesign focuses on the dominant large element that breaks the modular proportions of the street. - Protrusions of Dominant Scale - Solids and Voids Ratio with different configuration - Mashrabeyas for Shading over curtain walls - Typical El Ahram St. Materials with different colors and textures

DESIGN APPROACH “ALTERING THE PERCEIVED TYPOLOGY THROUGH THE EXPERI- ENCED” The design approach is based on user behavioral and responsive reactions. It considers the user’s perception of the typology based on the Perceived, Conceived, and Experienced.

Glass Curtain Wall
The screens are designed to be fully parametric mimicking the Islamic hexagonal module. The module sizes grow and expand when the noise amplitude on site is low. It contracts and closes as the sound amplitudes and frequencies increase.
CODE
Materials derived from the sight are adapted to reflect “ The Next Architectural Typology ” The Stone is used as a Cladding Layer to accentuate depth of the Islamic Pattern. The Glass in the Curtain Walls is used as an element in the design to segregate the Public Divisions of the hospital from the Private Division.
Cumulative Analysis shows that North has moderate heat and solar exposure, thus shading devices are added.
While the southern facade is highly exposed to the sun. Thus, more shading devices are added with less perforations.
Design Solution North Eastern Elevation The hospital is designed to have screens
that accommodate to the light intensity on site.
The “Leveled Platforms”
The outdoor platforms are leveled to create a multi-dimensional view experience for the hospital users.
It’s also accessible by the In-Patient users.
El-Korba is a relatively “Dense” site that over-shades its context.

MODULE INSPIRATION
The “Hexagonal Grid” is derived from the Openings and Fenestrations on Site.
The openings on site are characterized by sharp edges and/ or triangular top treatments.
The elements used are Round, Pointed, and Tri-lobbed Arches.

EXPOSED EGRESS STAIRS “VISUAL WAY FINDING”
The Hospital is designed to have exposed stairs to the community to emphasize way finding to users who suffer fear of “Claustrophobia.”

PLANS/ZONING The zoning and mass concept is concerned with building to empower user social and communal behaviors. The stereotyping of Hospital Typologies enforce a certain formal user behavior around hospitals. The mass utilizes penetration as a break through into the typology that transmits a commercial experience instead of the hospital. Typical formal, straightforward behavior.

ENTRANCES
The use of several entrances emphasizes the community-oriented users’ transition from the street experience and into the hospital from all directions.

“ENTRANCE ACCENTUA- TION”
The entrances are accentuated in the exterior facades using arcades as an architectural vocabulary.
Exits are accentuated from the interior by leading the user into a communal node outside the enclosure of the building.
HOSPITAL SCHEMATIC DESIGN “THIRD FLOOR LEVEL DESIGN ”
INTERTWINED CORRIDORS The hospital main circulation corridors are designed to accumulate and accelerate the user excitement to reach the end destination. For example, reaching communal zones in the ground floor.

THE VISUALLY ACCESSIBLE ZONES The hospital design revolves around creating atriums that allow users to view the adjacent/ later zones in early building experiences to prepare the user prior to treamtment as a form of “Dispersing Users’ Fear of Typology.
