Hotel Kanra Kyoto is a modern boutique hotel designed by the Tokyo-based firm UDS in 2010. The site is a former cramming school in Kyoto acquired by Takamiya Gakuen, the educational foundation to create the first “edutainment” establishment in Japan, aiming to educate visitors about Japanese culture and design. The design is inspired from the machiya town houses which the city is framed in and the traditional Ryokans home to 29 guest rooms that have a long and narrow shape. The concept of machiya was brought to the hotel by focusing on how abstract elements of nature could be incorporated. For the design elements such as the sea panels, and paper lamps the firm collaborated with Tokyo-based artists such as Alexander Reederm and Michiko.
