HOW IT ALL STARTED DISCOVER THE HISTORY OF ELYSIUM
THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION During the last 100 years, the human civilization achieved a very high stage in its scientific and technological development. These both contributed to the enhancement of the human lifestyle by automatizing the means of production, with the advent of intelligent machines, in the hope that people would spend their lives rejoicing and benefiting from all that the Earth could provide them without having to do any physical labour or struggle. Unfortunately, although they were intended to have a global impact, the intelligent machines weren’t benefiting really everybody, as the people born in poor families were still constrained to live in scarcity, as they outnumbered the few remaining working places. The medical field experienced an equal evolution, as a group of scientists discovered how to slow down the process of ageing, hoping that they will somehow ‘cheat’ death. They called this quest for immortality -The ‘Rejuvenation Project’. But although they couldn’t find the answer to the supreme problem of life-death, during the research process they found out ways to minimize it, by finding remedies for all diseases and by managing to create a substance which could slow down the process of cell decaying. By the year 3000, the life span of the wealthy people reached an average of 200 years.

THE HEDONISTIC LIFE Living in luxury, with nothing to worry about anymore, the first generation of people who afforded this treatment lived all their first 120 years in excesses, enjoying all the sensory pleasures that life could offer them, but as the time went by, they realized that living for their own pleasure wasn’t what they were created for, and understood that the purpose of life was to develop oneself while serving others. Having to live their last 80 years without the work that once allowed them to help and connect with the others in a meaningful way, the first generation of rejuvenated people only wanted their lives to serve as an example for the ones to come, as they found out that having too much is as bad as living in the deepest scarcity, because the ‘prosperity’ was only exterior, inside they felt empty and without purpose. So the wanted to create a middle way and walk on that path with everybody. They saw the poorer ones around them struggling and dying in poverty and then the same cycle repeated over and over again, so they decided to stop it and share their medical and financial resources with the poor, sick and needy ones, so that everybody could have enough time to understand what they were born for and have the chance to create the best version of their lives and also contribute to the society’s growth. They wanted this moment to be the beginning of a new era, where the values would be solely spiritual. 6
Unfortunately, the beginning of the new century didn’t bring the expected knowledge, wisdom and the growth the elders envisioned, but chaos and anarchy. The ones who were given a second chance didn’t remember the example of their predecessors, so they repeated the same mistakes, until the planet became overpopulated, the 22 billions of people managing to destroy in 60 years almost all the forests and natural resources, while getting most of the animals and insects extinguished. Having the possibility to live luxury at the fullest, they took every opportunity to create bigger houses and buildings and mechanize the environment, until there was not enough land to build on and not enough air to breathe. The sun could not be seen anymore because of the smog, and the people had to wear masks all the time to survive. Not long after that, the Earth started a process of self-cleaning and the earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes, which soon washed away all the buildings, shattered and destroyed the lands, along with all the living people. In secret, 5 of the scientists who were part of the Rejuvenation Project used cryopreservation to extend their lives as much as they could, to wake up in the future and see how far the people have gone and what they have achieved so far. Their stopwatch was set for 3248. Just 12 years before the mass extinction began, they had to woke up to face the disaster and disappointment.
THE LAST CHANCE Anticipating the mass decimation that was about to come, they created an artificial island on the bottom of the Atlantic ocean, in which they managed to preserve the genetic material from every species of animals along with the seeds from every family of plants. They selected the best people from all the regions of the globe, people who lived by the principles of the old ones and wanted to contribute to the creation of a better civilization, to the construction a brighter future. They called this ideal-the dream project- Elysium.
THE LAST CHANCE After the great disaster, the ship emerged to the surface and with the powerful anti-gravitational machines the scientists had invented, people brought together scattered pieces of land to create a proper environment to grow the threes and crops, and raise animals as well. And as the first organ that develops in the human body is the heart, the people gave Elysium the shape of it, to symbolize a new start.

LIVING BY DESIGN How our perfect society is structured
THE ELYSIAN HOUSES The houses and buildings weren’t made from wood and concrete anymore, and no organic materials were needed. They were made from a special plastic that was could be easily molded before being sprayed with a special substance that made it rigid. This allowed the elysian houses the resilience to be shaped around anything, even trees, but the steadiness to resist the test of time. They all unanimously voted to use the hexagonal design for the structure of the houses, as for unity. Every family had a hexagonal house with walls that could project anything from landscapes to the cities and monuments of the old world, functioning similarly to a screen.
The hexagonal design of the houses’ structure is a symbol of elysians’ unity There was no need for currency anymore, because the people would offer their help and services instead, so everything worked on favours that everyone respected, as they understood the law of cause and effect, and by knowing that no good or bad deed comes without a ‘reward’, nobody ever stole again. They blamed selfishness for all the human nature’s errors. By choosing to eliminate vanity, greed and manipulative behaviour, the elysians created a strong moral conduct based on selflessness and benevolence.
15
TRANSPORTATION The old polluting cars were replaced with the automatized semi-transparent villanas which could both fly up to 50 meters high and drive underwater.
THE WORKING AND RULLING SYSTEMS The scientists decided to structure the activities (required for the society to work and prosper) into more communities, each one dealing with an elementary branch for the society’s well-being and 16
functioning. They entitled themselves the role of leaders and peace keepers of the land, putting the base of an egalitarian society, where -despite the great variety of occupations-nobody held privileges.
This meant that all the people had to work the same amount of hours as others, but besides this rigorous program in which each of them had to perform daily for only 5-6 hours, the rest of the the time they were free to spend it as they wanted, the island offering plenty of resources to explore and enjoy.
There was created a special group though, made of 10 members, called ‘The Sages’, which assisted at the order in the society along with the scientists (similar function with the court of law). They were keeping any deviation from infiltrating the system-this meant that the people who committed wrongdoings or didn’t respect the laws, would be judged and not punished, but sent to a centre of rehabilitation, where they would relearn to understand the difference between good and bad by going through the Simulator-a device which transported the subjects’ minds into virtual spaces
which helped them experience different realities. The apparent imprisonment was so efficient, that the disobedient ones would not stay longer that 3 months, but despite that, the Centre of Redemptionvv was placed in the far north, on a land surrounded by water, between which only flying ships were allowed, water transportation being forbidden in that area. The psychologists along with the gate keepers were the ones in charge of the centre. The latter were also surveying the borders of the island, to endure the field’s functionality.
17
LIFELONG LEARNING
& EDUCATION Because it was a deeply spiritual society, there were a lot of amphitheaters and green spaces where weekly lectures would be held, as education is an ongoing process. The education for the young ones wasn’t based on memorizing, but on criticizing and rethinking ideas. The simulator allowed the children to learn by living the direct experiences and the learning. The schools weren’t rigid institutions and built from concrete walls, they were actually placed in glass buildings and gardens, the exposure to light being seen as an important factor in children’s development and well-being.
18
THE VEGETARIAN LIFESTYLE The food consumed by everybody was based only on plants, eggs and milk, there was no animal killed. Every family cultivated their own food, but each of them grew different types, so they were always doing exchanges and helping one another, and often held feasts and celebrate in the center of their community.
THE CLIMATE The climate was no longer a problem, as around the island there were installed pillars which projected an electro-magnetic field around the entire island, that created an effect similar to the one of the greenhouse, with the exception that this could generate both hot and cold weather, depending on what people desired. The engineers working at the outskirts of the island had a crucial role in maintaining a proper climate for the planted crops to survive.
